this is a letter that Bluey creator Joe Brumm wrote following the announcement of a Bluey movie and ngl, it got me a bit choked up
“Hi, this is Joe Brumm, the creator of Bluey.
I’m writing this to share some Bluey news – some good, some trifficult.
Let’s start with the good – after some time spent away from the series, working on another project, an old idea resurfaced and before I knew it, I’d written a Bluey feature script that I really love. Fast forward through a tonne of contracting and we’re about to embark on making an animated Bluey movie!
Now, for the trifficult. I always said I wouldn’t keep making the show if I thought I couldn’t make any new season as good as the last. This would have been the case for me with a potential season four, so I’ve decided to take a break from my involvement in the TV series. In the event I can’t wrap my head around doing more seasons myself, The Sign will mark my TV finale for Bluey and I wrote it as such.
Bluey has completely changed my life. It’s been an immensely satisfying thing to be a part of, more than I can really put into words. To walk away from it while it’s at such a height will seem crazy to some but, for now, I am finding it difficult to reach back genuinely into that four to six year old world and write authentically.
My Bluey crew and all the creative people in my life completely understand my decision. Working with that wonderful group of people has been the absolute highlight of my animation career and I hope Bluey on their CV is a badge of pride for them.
To be clear, this is not an announcement about the end of the show, but it is an acknowledgment that my focus will be on the film.
Thank you for taking this show into your homes, the whole experience has been an impossible experience to describe.”

With Bluey going on hiatus, it got me thinking of shows that could fill the void. And then I thought to myself, why not an adaptation of this book series? It could easily be America's answer to Bluey, for a wide variety of reasons. Of course, whoever made it would have to play their cards right.

Disney Jr. Closes Year With The Most-Watched Series for Preschoolers Across Linear And Streaming In 2024.
Disney Jr. closed out 2024 with four of the top 10 most-watched series among preschoolers across both linear and streaming platforms via The Wrap.
In 2024, Disney Jr. was behind “Bluey” which ranks as the No. 1 most-watched show among preschoolers; “Marvel’s Spidey and his Amazing Friends” which took third place; “Mickey Mouse Clubhouse” which took the No. 6 spot; and “SuperKitties” which was the No. 10 most-watched series in the age group. The channel also ranked as the No. 1 cable network for kids 2-5 for the third year in a row.
Disney Jr. also saw success on YouTube, growing to reach 21 million subscribers — a following that only 0.001% of YouTube channels hit —and over 21 billion views, outpacing Nick Jr. and Netflix Jr., according to internal YouTube analytics. “Marvel’s Spidey and his Amazing Friends,” for instance, has brought in 1.8 billion views across Disney Jr. and Marvel HQ YouTube channels.
“Disney Jr. has had an extraordinary year, leading the way as the #1 preschool brand across platforms,” Disney Branded Television president Ayo Davis, said in an exclusive statement to TheWrap. “With ‘Bluey’ as the most-watched series on streaming, ‘Marvel’s Spidey and his Amazing Friends’ and ‘SuperKitties’ breaking into the top ranks, and ‘Mickey Mouse Clubhouse’ continuing to captivate audiences, this year’s success underscores the power of Disney Jr.’s stories to connect with children and families everywhere. These achievements reflect the exceptional work of our teams and creative partners who make Disney Jr. a trusted and beloved part of so many homes.” ------ Ayo Davis (Disney Branded Television CEO and VP of Current and Development Disney Television Animation)
Disney will continue to expand its 2024 hits with a new iteration of Mickey Mouse Clubhouse named "Mickey Mouse Clubhouse+" which is in production and slated to premiere in 2025.

Why, thank you Joe Brumm. I needed another song stuck in my head for the next couple of days.
But in all seriousness, if you have watched the Bluey special 'The Sign' and liked the song from the ending, here's the official music video of Meg Washington's Lazarus Drug.

Can I just say that the episode dragon was one of the most emotional episodes for me. I cried during this episode because I gave up drawing myself long ago due to feeling like I wasn't good enough at it. (Also other reasons I suppose.)
Thanks Joe Brumm and thank you to Kate Miller-Heidke for this message ❤️

CREATING BLUEY - Tales from the Art Director
Chapter 1 - How a 23 Year old gal from Brisbane ended up designing the world's most popular kids show
FREE on Substack
Ever wondered what exactly went on behind the scenes of making Bluey? How do you make the world’s most popular children’s television show? Well for the first time, you get to read about it. From someone who was there at the very beginning.
I was the Lead Art Director on Bluey for Season 1. At the beginning of the production with direction from show creator Joe Brumm I designed the overall style of the show, the Heeler House and its interior rooms from scratch.
For the next few weeks I’ll be publishing a four chapter behind the scenes look at my experience on Bluey. For the fans, this will be a look behind the curtain you’ve never gotten. And for my fellow and beloved animation workers: I’ll lay bare what the expectations and realities are of working on one of those ‘dream jobs’ in animation we all aspire to. A dream that I thought I was doomed to always have pass me by as a kid studying animation in somewhere as far flung as Brisbane, Australia.

As excited and happy I am to learn of the announcement of the Bluey theatrical film, I hope that the Bluey fandom will take Joe Blumm's departure from the show with stride.
The last thing that this show needs is fans becoming overly critical of the show's quality with a potential fourth season. Like a certain other show that went through the same ordeal.

…so in the latest episode of the Hammerbarn Project podcast, the guys there talk to Joe Brumm about “The Sign”, and discussion included talk about those new Australia-only books with the different cartoonier illustrations…
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Brumm noted the art director drew the illustrations in a different style deliberately and that these books are different to other Bluey stories because they’re telling a make-believe story (i.e. with the grannies or other imaginary personas), rather than it being about the Heeler family.
So does this mean they’re definitely not thinking of changing the style of the show? Verdict is still out but hopefully not!
The Hammerbarn Project is a great podcast by the way, highly recommended. They mentioned this Tumblr on an episode once! And one of their team was the voice of one of the sheepdogs in “The Sign”… very cool.
