If I had a nickel for every time Joe Root laughed at his captain getting hit in the balls, I'd have 2 nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice

For everyone who's downplaying the Edgebaston win yesterday by calling it a flat track: Yes, first of all, I completely agree that it was a god-awful road of a pitch that did not make for an even contest between bat and ball. There was nothing in it for the bowlers. Agreed completely.
BUT that doesn't diminish the achievement. If the pitch was really as bad as that, why did Akash and Siraj extract more movement out of it than England's new ball pacers? Because they simply bowled better on the day, stuck to disciplined lines and lengths and reaped the reward.
And whoever is trying to downplay Shubman's knocks by calling it a flat pitch is also a clown. It takes immense skill, fortitude and patience to score 250+ and 150+ scores in the same match. I'm not denying that the pitch having no demons in it assisted the task of batting, but if it really was such a highway where anyone could've come out and scored runs, then why did the world's so-called best test batsman, Joe Root, walk away with an aggregate of less than 30 runs in the whole test? Why did England end up with 6 ducks, two of them golden ducks, and three of them belonging to top-order batters in the first innings? Were England suddenly batting on a different pitch to us? Is it really that hard to admit that we read, understood and exploited the available conditions better than the opposition?
Yes, the pitch may have been unsuitable for proper competitive cricket, but please don't undermine the quality and contribution of our own batters and bowlers in this win. This wasn't a fluke, or us getting lucky, we OUTPLAYED England very comprehensively. Revel in that.

every now and then i get a memory of when joe root said, ‘don’t use it as an insult. There’s nothing wrong with being gay’, and i’m instantly reminded of why he’s one of my favourites
