This 80s Classic is a seriously underrated 'Coming-of-Age' movie.

I remember back during my school years; having to write an essay about the difference between the Book and the Movie 📖🎬

My ranking of all the characters in Babylon 5 that I have strong feelings about, in one way or another!

Here's an explanation of the tiers (I simply cannot help but over-clarify everything)...

Tier 1 - My favourite

Tier 2 - I love them

Tier 3 - They're great, I have a lot of love for them, it's just a bit more casual than the first two tiers

Tier 4 - Depending on what part of their arc I'm watching, I either like them a lot... or I am about to shout at the TV screen because, as much as I appreciate how good their arc is, they've annoyed me

Tier 5 - This tier is mostly for villains because, yes, they make my skin crawl, but that's the point. I love a good villain to hate! You may notice, however, that there are non-villains in the tier. Lennier is a tricky one, because I really like him, and then I really dislike him. I can't just ignore that, so that's why he's in this tier of complex feelings. And as for Sinclair, I don't really have any strong feelings about him. I have ranked him because I simply couldn't leave him out, but there isn't a perfect tier for him. He ended up in this tier because, I have to admit, I will always spend season one waiting for him to leave so that I can be reunited with Sheridan ahaha oops--

Okay, I couldn't resist. I'm just creating a 3rd, all-Mikey list. Don't mind me…

1) Joe Pickett (Joe Pickett) - The character that got me into Michael in the first place. I love how family-oriented he is but also how he struggles so realistically with his unresolved childhood trauma & his mental health. 🤠🐎🍪 2) Gordo Stevens (For All Mankind) - I am solidly in my FAM era right now. The arc of this character makes me a little insane. It's so beautifully written & acted. The way Gordo goes from fun-loving & arrogant & carefree, to traumatized & scared & depressed… and then how he claws his way out of that dark spiral to find his confidence again as well as some humility, and he realizes that he can be scared but still be courageous. I can't get enough of this character. I could talk about Gordo all day long! 👨‍🚀🚀🌖 3) John Tavner (Patriot) - Oh, the comedy & heartbreak of this show! It is so amazing, with beautiful cinematography & some really funny but also sad songs sung fantastically by Mikey. This show & character make me feel so many strong emotions, and I want someone -- ANYONE! -- to protect John at all costs. 🎒🐶🎸 4) Jesse Richardson (Hard Luck Love Song) - I love the vibe of this movie. Just the sort of slice-of-life storyline where he's trying to get his feet under him & find himself again after some struggles. Even though his recent difficulties have mostly been self-induced, Jesse is such a charming character who is easy to root for. 🎸🎱💵 5) Thomas McCully (Prime Mover) - The arc of this character is pretty great too. He starts off as a sweet, kind of playful guy who gets overwhelmed by his situation & begins spiraling into depression & drug use. I love how, like Gordo in FAM, he manages to claw his way out of the darkness to find the light again & get himself back on track. 🚛💊🔧 6) Tom Wilcox (Wonderland) - Breaking away from the characters in mental turmoil. I do love Tom's character arc as well, though. He's not struggling mentally like the previous 5 characters I listed, but he has his own demons with which to grapple. I love a good storyline like Tom's where the lighthearted, playful character starts showing a more serious, dramatic side of himself. 🪚🍷🏄‍♂️ 7) Dan Sinclair (Wild Boys) - A very lighthearted, charming, & lovable character. Dan had the potential for an arc where he got to show a more serious side of himself, with some past family drama & such. It's just a shame that the series only went one season. I think we would've gotten that other side of Dan if there had been a second season. 🤠🐎💰 8) Christian Hayden (The Secret Life of Us) - Not one of my favorite shows overall, but I love Christian. He's another sort of lighthearted & playful character who begins to struggle with something more serious going on as he discovers he has epilepsy. He really grapples with what this means for his life & struggles for a while to come to terms with it. 🌻💊🌺 9) Joel (The Time of Our Lives) - What we got to see of this character was just a drop in the bucket, but Michael played it very well, as always. He did a great job making me hate what he did (hurting someone he loved so deeply) but then understand why he did it, even if he went about it the wrong way. I wish he had been in this series more as I really liked his character. I felt like Joel could have really grown as a person over the course of a whole season. 💍🧳📱 10) Michael (Breath) - Oh, this character. Despite this being a short film, the emotions in this run so deeply. Watching Michael make such a lighthearted video for his daughter, knowing that the reason he is doing it is so serious & scary, just breaks my heart into pieces. 📹🏥🐟

Showdown 2k25 - Submit Propaganda

Just like last year I want to kick January off with a flat popularity contest, showdown 2k25. (<- I wrote that in December before my laptop packed up, it'll now be after whenever I manage to get my laptop fixed) -

Happy Birthday Bill Forsyth the Scottish film director and screenwriter.

Born in Glasgow July 29th 1946 and educated at Knightswood School. On leaving aged 17, he answered an advertisement for a “Lad required for film company” and spent the next eight years helping make short documentary films.

Leaving documentary production in 1977, Forsyth wrote the scripts for Gregory’s Girl and That Sinking Feeling in the hope of breaking into feature films.

Obtaining finance, however, proved frustrating and problematic. The BFI Production Board rejected Gregory’s Girl three times. Forsyth later said, “I remember one torment of a meeting when I tried to explain that Gregory’s Girl was really a structuralist comedy… I suspect my script was too conventional although nobody actually told me as much.”.

That Sinking Feeling was eventually made in 1979 with amateur actors from the Glasgow Youth Theatre, including John Gordon Sinclair (who later took the lead in Gregory’s Girl , its tiny £5,000 budget was raised from a variety of sources.

Forsyth’s distinctive voice as writer-director is already apparent in this tale of a robbery of stainless steel sinks by a gang of unemployed Glasgow teenagers - intensely humanistic and humorous yet with an underlying seriousness of purpose. This ability to create a self-contained yet believable world with a keen sense of the absurd and bizarre in the everyday is perhaps only rivalled by the work of British television writer Alan Plater. The film opened to great popular and critical success at the Edinburgh and London Film Festivals but was unable to secure more widespread distribution.

Gregory’s Girl was Forsyth’s breakthrough film. This acutely observed story of adolescence and first love set in a Scottish new town was rapturously received by both critics and public alike. Forsyth’s reputation seemed to be secured by the success of his next venture, Local Hero, a first collaboration with producer David Puttnam.

In 1999 he made Gregory’s Two Girls as a sequel to Gregory’s Girl, with John Gordon Sinclair playing the same character, but it received mixed reviews.

Gregory's Girl, to me, is still a very funny film, but it feels dated, that's not to say that it hasn't stood the test of time with some folk, indeed The Glasgow Film Theatre (GFT) showed a 4k version of the 1980 cult classic last August 1which was followed by a Q&A session with some of the cast including Gordon Sinclair(Gregory), Clare Grogan.

In 2022 the popular Scottish actor Peter Capaldi spoke of how Bill Forsyth saved him from living off pakora and lager after featuring him in Local Hero. The Doctor Who and The Thick Of It star praised the Scots film director in an acceptance speech after receiving a Bafta Scotland Award for Outstanding Contribution to Film & Television.

I love Capaldi's affection for our country, speaking to the audience while holding his Bafta, Capaldi said the award was “for getting lucky, and for being lucky enough to be born in Scotland”.

He said: “Forty years ago I was just up here (in Glasgow) as an art student, living off pakora and lager for breakfast.

“Bill Forsyth scooped me up and put me in Local Hero.

“It was an act of kindness and confidence that baffled me and much of the industry to this day, but I wouldn’t be here without him and nor would a lot of others.”

Capaldi landed this breakthrough film role aged 24 playing Danny Oldsen, a naive young oil industry executive, in the film.

A number of actors, including Dee Hepburn, will be a part of a celebration of the films of Bill Forsyth at the Outwith Festival of music and arts which takes place in Dunfermline from September 3-8. It will also screen That Sinking Feeling and Local Hero at the city’s Carnegie Theatre.
