Rereading John Burnside’s incredible Waking Up in Toytown on a beautiful wintry morning in Newcastle –
the dead who never belonged to anyone, not even themselves, will go on forever, or some element of them will, folding endlessly into rain and leaves and new animals hunting in the first grey of dawn.

Hello friend. . Here is a book I really loved to read: 'The Dumb House' by the brilliant John Burnside. . Is language innate or acquired? Obsessed with this question, read in an old Persian myth, the narrator will retake the experiment. . . A wonderful book, read it if you can. . Are you curious too about what language is? I am. . #bookstagram #books #novel #classics #fiction #johnburnside #bookporn #booklover #vintagebooks #language #mystery #thriller #obsession

From John Burnside’s poem, Loved and Lost: Give me a childhood again and I will live as owls do, in the moss and curvature of nightfall -glimpsed, but never really seen,

Hello everyone and hope your week has started well? I’m back at work post COVID so my brain is a bit 🤯 but I got through it. Here’s the last part of my birthday book haul! Hex was bought for me by the gorgeous @bookishbananna it’s about a picturesque town called Black Spring where a 17th century woman with sewn shut eyes and mouth walks its streets…enters its homes…watches its people while they sleep. 😳 Soul Tourists was bought by my sister in law, after my quest to have everything @bernardineevaristo has ever written. It tells of two twentieth century misfits and their adventure into European history. The Observations is one of my favourite books and was bought for me by my sister @chrissireads and is set in Victorian Scotland in 1863 with one of the most memorable literary heroines, Bessy Buckley. I can’t wait to re-read it. The four other books were bought by my mum. Death In Her Hands is described as a razor-sharp, chilling and darkly hilarious novel about the stories we tell ourselves and how we strive to obscure the truth. Brickmakers is a translated novel and a rural tragedy in the great American tradition, a story of love and violence where everything is put at stake. I’ve had The Dumb House on my wishlist for so long! Based on a Persian myth, a palace is filled with children attended by mutes in order to understand if language is innate or acquired. The unnamed narrator creates a twisted variant of their own using their own children. Finally, I’ve been hearing about West for ages! Cy Bellman hears that huge ancient bones have been discovered in the swamps of Kentucky. He leaves his young daughter to fend for herself as he investigates the rumours that state the giant monsters are still living and roaming around unchartered territory. I’d love to know your thoughts on any of these books or authors. Let’s have a chat in the comments and have a great week everyone! 🤗😘 #bookstagram #bookhoarder #bookhaul #hex #thomasoldeheuvelt #soultourists #bernardineevaristo #theobservations #janeharris #deathinherhands #ottessamoshfegh #brickmakers #selvaalmada #anniemcdermott #thedumbhouse #johnburnside #west #carysdavies #shortbooks #booksonmytbr https://www.instagram.com/p/Cd6Yj3KL5Rf/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

“Instead they talked: on and on, they talked about nothing, unraveling the world in their tedious, ugly converse. This is the nature of social existence. We talk in order to impose limits, to contain the world in a narrow frame. Yet every textbook on language proceeds upon an assumption of communication, concerning itself with structure and grammar, with meaningful exchange, with the possibility of analysis.”
John Burnside - The Dumb House
