435) Ixworth - angielska rasa białej kury domowej. Nazwa pochodzi od wioski Ixworth w Suffolk, gdzie została stworzona w 1932 roku. Została wyhodowana jako szybko rosnąca rasa mięsna wysokiej jakości z rozsądnymi zdolnościami do nieśności.

Ixworth został stworzony w 1932 roku przez Reginalda Appleyarda, który stworzył również Silver Appleyard Duck, na swojej farmie drobiu w wiosce Ixworth w Suffolk. Został wyhodowany z białych kur Sussex, białych Minorca, białych Orpington, Jubilee, Indian Game i białych Indian Game,  z zamiarem stworzenia rasy o podwójnym przeznaczeniu, szybko rosnącego, wysokiej jakości ptaka mięsnego o rozsądnej zdolności do znoszenia jaj.  W 1938 roku stworzono karła Ixworth; Appleyard uważał go za lepszego od ptaka o standardowych rozmiarach. W latach 70. Ixworth prawie zniknął; od tego czasu stopniowo się odrodził. Jest to rzadka rasa: w 2007 r. została umieszczona na liście FAO jako „zagrożona – utrzymywana”.  W 2008 r. została umieszczona w „kategorii 2: zagrożona” przez Rare Breeds Survival Trust, a w 2014 r. znalazła się na liście rodzimych ras drobiu zagrożonych przez tę organizację.

Upierzenie kury Ixworth jest czysto białe. Grzebień jest koloru grochu; on i twarz, płatki uszu i dzwonki są jaskrawoczerwone. Oczy są jaskrawo pomarańczowe lub czerwone. Dziób, golenie, stopy, skóra i mięso są białe. W badaniu porównawczym przeprowadzonym w Roslin Institute w 2003 r. stwierdzono, że kury rasy Ixworth osiągają masę żywą 4,03 kg w wieku 55 tygodni i znoszą średnio 0,74 jaj dziennie, przy średniej masie jaja 61,0 g. Mięso osiąga wysokie ceny.

Orpington Chickens

The Orpington chicken breed has been my favorite breed to keep of all time!

Never have I thoroughly loved a breed more!

My top favorite pros to this breed are -

• Very calm relaxed temperament

• Wonderful around children!

• They are not bullies to each

other and generally even introducing new birds is easy!

• while they are big calm birds they are still great foragers!

• they can easily free-range or quietly accept being penned up

• great egg layers of medium/large tinted eggs

• hens great mothers to chicks!

• they come in a variety of beautiful colors including Buff, Lavender, Chocolate, Jubilee, Blue etc!

• there’s nothing quite as wholesome and farm-esque like a flock of big fluffy butt orpingtons.

My Orpington flock members are different ages and my oldest Buff Orpington lays the biggest cream colored egg while my two Lavender Orpingtons each lay a slightly different shade of buff/brown.

Named after the town “Orpington” Kent, in England where the breed was first developed. There are many varieties and true ‘English ’ Orpingtons are even bigger, fluffier birds than most of the American Orpingtons here. I find my Lavenders feature more English traits since they were obtained from a breeder rather than bought from a hatchery like my Buff Orpington “Helen”

Final word

For beginner chicken keepers I cannot recommend the Orpington enough! Even experienced chicken keepers will appreciate the sweet and easy care disposition of the breed when compared to other breeds of chickens who are more flighty and hard to handle.

I think out of all the breeds they will always be my favorite!

Chicken rambles below-

So, first off, super excited for when we can finally put the hatching eggs under our broody orpington Val!

We have a very nice variety of chickens atm! (although I wish I had a jubilee orpington and maybe a light brahma too... and a new jersey giant would be spectacular......) Two of our four hens are actually hybrids, and we don't know what breeds they're made of, so it'll be a fun surprise to see what our mutt rooster and our hybrids will produce!!

Speaking of which, our rooster is a total mutt, as far as we can tell! I haven't found a single breed of chicken that looks quite like him. There are a few that come close, but there's always something off, or not quite the same, so I can't wait to see what he produces!!!!

We're probably going to sell most of the chicks to our local poultry trading/selling community, as we don't have the space, nor the particular desire to keep all these extra chickens, especially if there are a lot of extra roos (although if we do wind up with extra roos, we can probably either cook em up, or see if they turn out to be friendly- any mean roos immediately turn to dumples.)

Overall just super excited to see some of our very own baby chicks hatch, especially since we probably won't need the brooder set up, if our mama Val doesn't reject them :>

Speaking of Val, in the past we tried to get her to surrogate some day old chicks when she was broody, and she rejected them rather harshly. This was partially due to my parents rushing me and refusing to listen and just going on ahead and shoving the chicks in her nest during daytime.

Hopefully, she won't reject every chick she sees, and will be a good mama hen. I'm just worried about the others in the flock. Been trying to get my parents to let me order a rabbit hutch or extra coop for either Val, or the rest of the flock to use while Val dominates the nesting boxes.

434) Indian Game - brytyjska rasa kur bojowych, obecnie hodowaną na mięso lub wystawy. Powstała na początku XIX wieku w hrabstwach Kornwalii i Devon w południowo-zachodniej Anglii. Jest to ciężki, muskularny ptak o niezwykle szerokiej piersi;  jaja są jasnobrązowe. W Stanach Zjednoczonych nazwa została zmieniona na początku XX wieku na Cornish. Biała odmiana, White Cornish, została tam opracowana mniej więcej w tym samym czasie i jest szeroko stosowana w nowoczesnej przemysłowej produkcji mięsa z kurczaka w wielu częściach świata, albo do krzyżowania w celu uzyskania hybrydowych brojlerów, albo do produkcji szybko rosnących „kur łownych”.

Rasa została wyhodowana przez Sir Waltera Gilberta z Bodmin w Kornwalii około 1820 roku. Miała być kogutem bojowym, ale nie miała predyspozycji do walk kogutów. Jest uznawana za „Indian Game” w Australii,  przez Poultry Club of Great Britain w Zjednoczonym Królestwie i przez Entente Européenne w Europie. W Stanach Zjednoczonych nazwa została zmieniona w 1905 roku na „Cornish Indian Game”, a następnie w 1910 roku na „Cornish”. Została zaakceptowana przez American Poultry Association w 1893 roku.

Indian Game to duży i krępy ptak, krótki w nogach i niezwykle szeroki i głęboki w piersi. Niektóre koguty mogą być tak krótkie w nogach i mieć tak szeroką pierś, że nie są w stanie się rozmnażać. W Wielkiej Brytanii rozpoznaje się trzy odmiany kolorystyczne: ciemną, oryginalną; Jubilee; i podwójnie sznurowaną niebieską, która jest rzadka. Entente Européenne d'Aviculture et de Cuniculture i niektóre kraje europejskie uznają białą odmianę oprócz tych trzech. W Stanach Zjednoczonych, Cornish jest rozpoznawany w czterech kolorach: oryginalna ciemna, dodana do Standard of Perfection w 1893 r.; biała, dodana w 1898 r.; biało-sznurowana czerwona, dodana w 1909 r.; i płowy, dodany w 1938 r. Orpington

The Buff orpington is the quintessential backyard chicken. Imagine a big ginger-blonde fluff ball lazily meandering around your yard. With a reputation of being very sweet, docile, and patient, these birds are especially good with kids. The buff color Orpington is the most common, though they come in a variety of other color plumage! Blue, Black, White… A Lavender or Jubilee Orpington is on our wish list, most definitely! Orpingtons lay medium to large light brown eggs, averaging one every other day.

Due to their fluffy plumage, this breed is especially cold-hardy. Also because of their heavy stature, they’re known to be less flighty once they’ve reached maturity. Orpingtons may go broody fairly often, and are very good mother hens.
