Movie Review: My Summer as a Goth

”If you don’t care what people think, why did you just ask me what I thought?” Overview and Plot My Summer as a Goth is a crowd funded movie directed by Tara Johnson-Medinger. It stars Joey, a morose teen who constantly talks about her dead dad and gets angry when other people talk about her dead dad. Since her mother is a prolific author set to do a book tour, Joey is shipped about 45 minutes out of town to her grandparents' house for the summer. There she becomes interested in the neighbor boy, an even more sullen teen called Victor. Victor notices Joey's interest and whisks her away into the world of goth summer romance. In terms of production, very nice looking film. Professional. I liked that the beginning of the movie looked very washed-out and reflected the mood well, getting warmer as the summer went on. I also loved the texting graphics. The movie was well-paced and a good length, however the passage of time in the movie was a bit odd. VERY soon after the movie says summer starts it’s the Fourth of July, then again only a short time later everyone’s talking about how the summer is almost over. Joey even gets mad at her mother in one instance for not being available in time, but it seems like the mother responded back in about a day while Joey makes it out that it took weeks. The in-movie passage of time was very confusing for me. Most of the characters were well-written with some hiccups mostly on the grandparent’s and Antonio’s end. Costume design was on-point. Sound was fine and the music choices throughout were wonderful. Overall, the film had really good production value.

Moving into spoiler territory, Joey’s grandparents are a ride as they swing from giving Joey hundreds of dollars and baking her pot brownies to telling at her she can’t stay out late and that she needs an exorcism. Antonio, a punk, starts the movie off by getting into a fist fight with Victor, but later becomes a loveable member of the cast. We meet Cob and Pen, the “goth swan couple”. They’re Victor’s friends and a breath of fresh air; despite having morose interests they’re very bubbly and outgoing. I wish more of the movie had them in it. They along with Victor decide to give Joey a makeover and invite her to a few different events over the summer including a silent disco in a graveyard, a party at Pandora’s house, and a concert. They also go on a camping trip with Joey, her grandparents, and one of Joey’s high school friends. Eventually, Joey gets annoyed with Victor’s constant toxic attitude and finds out he’s cheating on her. Everything’s fine in the end as the summer comes to a close and she goes back to school with Antonio as her new boyfriend and her new, darker look.

Joey the babybat has daddy issues. In the beginning Joey feels acts catty and defensive about everything. Don’t worry, she never really grows out of that. Pretty much everything about her revolves around either the fact that her father is dead or her relationship with Victor. She does have an art hobby that’s shown throughout the movie but she seems almost embarrassed by it? It’s never actually brought up by any characters and no one ever looks through her sketchbook or shows interest in it. Which I found really odd because a lot of the goths I know in real life tend to be pretty creative and would love it? Anyway, she falls head-first into goth because of a boy. I know that’s how some people get into the subculture, but it kind-of sours the movie because it seems like she also only stays in the subculture because of the boy. In the beginning she mentions liking the music and how it helps her express how she feels inside, but other than Victor, we really don’t get to see how she thinks about the subculture. She’s friends with Cob and Pen because they’re Victor’s friends. She goes to events because Victor goes. She dresses up because Victor wants her to. But once Victor is out of the picture, why does she stay? Other than the passing mention of music at the beginning, she really has no interest in the goth scene. She’s never shown engaging with the scene on her own terms, and I find that a little disappointing. When I was a babybat I was reading goth blogs like Stripy Tights and Dark Delights, I was trying to get my hands on back issues of Gothic Beauty, I was watching a ton of different youtubers talk about the scene and I just wanted more. There’s none of that with Joey save for a short scene where she watches tutorials on how to do her hair and make-up. (Which, admittedly was really cute.) I didn’t understand WHY Joey stays a goth at the end of the movie and I think it’s because the movie really didn’t portray the positive aspects of the subculture as much. Also, Joey needs to work on her attitude problem. She mentions her dead dad quite a bit at the beginning and gets upset when other people mention it back to her. At the end of the film she calls her mom over heartbreak and when her mom tries to talk about it with her, she acts sarcastic and shuts her mother out, getting mad that she reached out at the wrong time. I’m unsure if it was just Joey going back to her old coping strategies or if she was in the right because I have no idea how much time had passed since the phone call. I’ll never know. Either way, she does dump Victor which is nice and she reconciles with her mother as well. I do like that she feels more comfortable with herself at the end of the movie and begins doing things on her own terms, even if others don’t “get it”. Victor is a VERY well-written, manipulative dick. Storytime! So, there weren’t many goths at my college and we never really had any classes together, but I remember seeing this one kid walking across the street to the art buildings with a flowing black velvet cape over their backpack, an unlaced black poet shirt, platinum white hair in a side-hawk, knee-high black leather boots and a TON of silver jewelry. Honestly, they would have looked so cool if their harem pants weren’t made of chiffon and completely see-through. (Batman boxers!) Seeing Victor for the first time immediately reminded me of that. Over the top, charming, charismatic and a bit silly. I liked him at first. His wit is dry and in the beginning he didn’t take himself of the subculture TOO seriously, making jokes about vampires. I liked that he seemed to be having fun chatting about music and dressing up Joey. And then there came the lipstick. Honestly, the lipstick was used absolutely perfectly to show how the relationship is souring and how manipulative Victor really is. It really is a gradual showing of how things are going south in their relationship and how Victor isn’t as much as a downcast victim as he puts on. Later on in the movie he starts reminding me of that Bruiser sketch where there’s two goths and one of them is just badgering the other one that he can’t take his sweater off in the summer or join in on seasports because it’s “not goth”. He begins chastising Joey for not looking perfect at all times or not knowing things about the subculture despite the fact that he just dresses her up and brings her to parties instead of actually trying to integrate her to the local scene or teaching her about music or history. Eventually he goes back to hooking up with Pandora, something he apparently does frequently because Joey is not the first person he’s cheated on and literally everyone in town warns Joey about it. Victor clearly has a massively inflated ego and you love to hate him in the end. There are definitely his type in goth scenes around the world and I can see how he stays in good graces with the other asshole friends he has. Some people just really like being elitists. The one thing I can’t figure out, though, is why Pen and Cob are friends with him. They’re so nice compared. A punk by jacket only and why casual homophobia makes me salty. Antonio is... hoo boy, is he a thing. First introduced starting a fight with Victor you think, "Ah, this is the antagonist of the movie. I wonder why they made the punk an asshole? Usually punks are okay with goths." Luckily for us, he apologizes for the outburst and becomes a friend of the main cast. We learn he likes canasta and plays guitar. Oddly, he doesn't seem to have any punk patches or pins on his jacket and never actually mentions punk music. He does, however, mention goth music and he seems familiar with the other goths in town going to their events, so it seems he's on good standing with them despite bullying the goths at the beginning of the film. Seeing as goths would rather pretend to be haughty vampires than get their tail coats in a twist, Antonio makes for a heroic figure in the movie when Joey is in trouble. In my notes I wrote, "Ten bucks says punk kid is gonna save her,” and lo and behold, Antonio comes out of nowhere to save Joey from some bullies. I do like that he uses his rough appearance to his advantage to help people and do the right thing. That pretty accurately describes every punk I’ve ever met. They look tough as nails, but you’ll only see that side of them if you absolutely deserve to.

It's also revealed that Antonio is not straight as he's seen making out with some guy at a concert, mentions having had a previous relationship with Victor, and is being made fun of for being gay in the end. He also ends the film by being Joey's boyfriend. Pardon, what? I'm kind-of tired of this heteronormative nonsense where movies have to end with all main characters (Sans the villain, of course.) end up in a happy straight relationship. Joey's non-goth friend who's in the movie for a very short amount of time also ends up with a goth boyfriend because happily-ever-after and all that. It probably wouldn't have sat as poorly with me if they didn't make fun of Antonio for "looking gay" which in context makes no sense since he's pretty gender conforming compared to the goth men in the film. It also didn’t help that there were comments about lesbians at the beginning of the movie. At one point Joey's grandparents suggest she might like girls and Joey rebukes it with vitriol saying her grandparents are "too cool". The same kind of vitriol you hear when a straight person tells you they could never imagine being gay, that's disgusting. Oh, but they support your "choices", hm? I just wish Antonio’s character was a bit more fleshed out and he didn’t end up being back-up male love interest that’s only there to save female lead from bad guys and heartbreak. First rule of Goth Music is you don’t talk about Goth Music? The movie introduces goth along with music. The music in the film is honestly really good and a good portrayal of what goths actually listen to. Joey mentions she likes the music near the beginning and she goes to events such as a silent disco, a party, and a concert. Despite music obviously being a major source of community in the movie, no one actually talks about it other than that one instance of Joey mentioning she likes it. No one suggests bands to her or actually goes to the parties or concerts to do anything other than make out. The silent disco is the only real instance of them listening and dancing to the music and it feels like it's over in a flash. Though, the corny goth dance moves in that scene kind-of make up for it. At one point Antonio pulls out a guitar and asks if Joey wants him to play “Bela Lugosi’s Dead”. She mentions she’s never heard of it which leads Antonio to ask if she’s new to the scene. At another point in the party, Joey asks someone if they like Marylin Manson. While this is an obvious faux pas to anyone actually in the goth scene, no one actually engages with her in conversation about it. How was Joey supposed to know his music isn’t goth? Wasn’t she listening to goth music earlier at the silent disco? Or the music she said sounded pretty from Victor’s room when they met? How did she get this far liking these bands but not noticing that they sound nothing like Marylin Manson and did she never look them up on her own to listen to them later? She obviously likes them, so it really surprises me that she only got in the goth scene for a guy.

Robert Smith NEVER has smeared lipstick. /s The emphasis on appearance is a little annoying throughout the movie, but I guess it had to be. It fits Victor's personality to change Joey's personal style to match his, and the makeover scene was fun, but I wish there would have been more diversity in the cast of townie goths who attend the parties, concerts, and discos. I counted one person with blonde hair and a small handful of older goths. I didn't notice any non-white goths and unfortunately the movie placed quite the emphasis on pale skin and trying to avoid tanning. I know people like the white face along with dark make-up and looking vamp-ish, but when all your characters are in white greasepaint and there's no PoC to be seen in goth garb it sends a message that only white people can be goth and that's really something we need to kill in the subculture. I did, however, like the wardrobe choices. I liked that Joey got her wardrobe from a thrift store and that she dyed a top she already owned. She looked up tutorials on how to do her hair and make-up and it never looked perfect. That's a good thing. Baby Bats won't know how to do a bats nest hairstyle, they won't know to blend foundation to the neck, and they won't have a perfect eyeliner wing. No one mentioned alt-brand name clothing and no one had a perfectly couture outfit that media likes to sell as a stereotypical goth teenager. The goths actually looked like goths. Their wardrobes were things you'd actually see in a club and we get to see that they wear a plain black tank top and shorts when milling about the house, only breaking out the corsets and top hats for big events. The older goths were more well put together and that makes sense because they've been in the subculture longer and have had time to figure out what they like and what looks good on them. The costuming department did a really great job with this. Ah, but as a side note about wardrobe, who donates brand new, tall Docs to a thrift store??? You can’t sit with us. And sadly, the worst part of Goth in the movie- community. What was that, film? Other than the three main goths, we only get to see other goths at large events and they all seem a bit catty? You have the silent disco, which was cute but no one really spoke to or interacted with each other. Pen and Cob are kind-of doing their own thing throughout no matter who they’re with. We also have the house party and the concert. The other goths there are.... pretty much just there to be judgy because Joey’s new? The first time I went to a club in a new city and didn’t know anyone some random person grabbed my hands and dragged me to the dancefloor. It was fun! People would ask the DJ what he was spinning and they weren’t shamed for not knowing. If someone’s jacket ripped, five people would come out of the woodwork with a safety pin and afterwards we’d all pile into Denny’s and laugh and joke and talk about nothing. I’m not saying there’s no “Gothier-than-Thou” types, believe me I’ve met more than a few, but in a movie that’s trying to portray someone WANTING to become a goth, why not portray the subculture as more inviting? Also, with the comments from Victor and a few other remarks, it seems like alcohol is needed to blend into the goth scene, and that definitely isn’t the case. Sure, a lot of us love absinth or a snakebite in black, but it’s not needed to fit in with the cool kids at the club. The community really is my favorite thing about this subculture and I feel it was a disservice that most goths were showcased as uninviting. I can understand Joey not being wanted at the party initially as she wasn’t invited in the first place and perhaps the eldergoths in the room didn’t want to have to have an impromptu etiquette and history lesson with a babybat when they’re supposed to be relaxing, but the point of the movie was to showcase why Joey wants to be a goth. She never makes friends outside of Victor’s immediate group and never tries to find community or information about the scene online or anything. I guess that is how babybats do act a lot of the time, but again, at the risk of sounding like a broken record, the point of the movie is showing why someone would WANT to be a goth. Final Thoughts. The goth scene in the movie looked like a regular goth scene. I liked the emphasis on thrifting and DIY and that newcomers don’t come out of the womb knowing the lyrics to the entirety of Floodland. The music was phenomenal. I liked that the music featured was goth music, but not the main five bands that everyone already knows. I liked that the events attended were focused mainly around music. I liked seeing actual goth dance moves on screen. I liked that people in the movie did use terminology found in the subculture and made jokes about the subculture that insiders would actually make. I liked that Pen and Cob were wonderfully peppy despite their dark interests, I liked that we got punk-goth solidarity. I liked that it did remind me a bit of my babybat years and got me missing clubs and events. I miss all my friends... I really do...

I was put off by the passage of time in the movie, Joey’s cattiness with anyone who tries to help her, the light and casual homophobia sprinkled in, and the negative-leaning portrayal of the goth community. Other than that, though, I did think it was a good movie with a satisfying ending and I would really suggest people check it out. It’s probably the most accurate portrayal of goths in any media, really, and it’s worth a watch. At the very least, go listen to the soundtrack on BandCamp.

Welcome to the biggest event of the year at ShyanWritingEvents, our Summer Exchange! This year, our goal is to fill the tag with the best works we can offer to the fandom while having the most fun.

~ What is the Shyan Exchange 2019?

The Shyan Exchange is a fanworks Gift Exchange focused on the romantic pairing shyan for the Buz/zFe/ed Unso/lved fandom. This will be an anonymously posted exchange that includes fanfic, fanart, gifsets and graphics, and where works will go up three days before authors and artists are revealed to their recipients.

Make sure to read the rules and the event schedule below the cut.

~ Event Rules

By signing up, you are committing to write an original, fully completed story that is no less than 1k words, or an original and finished fanart that is fully colored (grayscale counts), or a gifset comprised of 3 gifs or more, or graphics/edits (including posters).

This exchange is for works written in English. Anyone from any part of the world can enter, but English is necessary. It needs to have the necessary beta work done before posting. Fanfictions must be reasonably edited and readable, we are NOT betaing for authors.

You are expected to leave a comment on the gift YOU receive. This includes anyone who may drop out after assignments go out, since the person working the prompt is still in and the person who dropped will still get something.

Works should be focused on and only in the Ry*n B*rgar*/Sh*ne Mad*j (shyan) romantic pairing. You can include other side pairings or even other relationships involving them, but the end result of your work should be driven by ROMANTIC shyan (this means polyam and open relationships are accepted as long as the story is driven by romantic shyan).

You have to follow your recipient’s prompt. Do not include any of their do-not-wants. Doing so will cause your gift to not be included.

Your work must be complete. Works in progress are not acceptable for the gift. Multichapter is allowed only if it’s finished and an original work made for the Exchange.

You must be signed up by the time sign-ups close. If you’re late, you are welcome to offer to be a pinch-hitter (someone that will take over a prompt in the event someone has to drop out).

You must remain anonymous to your recipient until after reveals. Do not contact your prompter! If you need help with something or a question regarding your assignment, contact the blog! You should remain anonymous with other participants. Limited exceptions for betas.

You may not cross-post your completed gift anywhere until after reveals are complete.

If you sign-up and have to drop out, you need to contact the mods no later than two weeks before the deadline. In case you don’t do this, you won’t be allowed to participate in the following two events of the blog and will be listed under the post with the people who left without saying a word.

In your sign-up, you must request at least two different prompts, and no more than four. At least one prompt must be simple enough for fanart (e.g., A carrying B, cuddling, Space AU, etc.).

Works including rape/non-con/torture-porn/underage are not allowed as part of this exchange. This is not a ban on dark material. You may address related themes in your works, but graphic scenes should be avoided. Material of the kind between the couple will not be allowed. Keep this in mind when making your requests, too.

There is no minimum age requirement to participate in this exchange. However, if you are under the age of 18, please do not request or offer explicit sexual content.

If you change your URL or AO3 user, you MUST message the blog immediatelly so we don’t lose contact with you. If we can’t find you, you will be left out.

~ Rules for Posting

The fanfic or fanart must be posted on AO3 with the tag Shyan Exchange 2019. You can crosspost, only after reveals, to Tumblr, Wattpad, etc. but it must be on AO3. That will be our archive.

If posting on Tumblr, please tag it as shyanexchange2k19 in the first five tags of your post so we can reblog it. Please do not tag the name of the show or the boys’ full names. Suggested tags: shyanexchange2k19, shyan, shyan fic/art, skeptic believer, buzzfeed unclean (only for explicit works). Blogs you can tag: shyanwritingevents, shyanlibrary, yaboybergara.

The work must be reasonably edited and readable. That means we are not betaing, the way you post it is the way it goes out to the fandom!

You need an AO3 account to sign-up, so make sure you have one. You’ll have to submit your work to the Shyan Exchange Collection on August 27, 2019. Your work will be posted on September 3 on anonymous and on September 10, it will be revealed (this means it will stop being anonymous and will not only appear with your name on the tags, but will also appear in your profile).

You must not tell which one is your work util the three day anonymous time is over.

~ Restrictions

No authors under the age of 18 are allowed to request or offer explicit stories or art.

No WIPs (works in progress) allowed, only finished art and stories.

No underage sex and/or noncon/rape allowed between the couple, no explicit scenes of the kind if your story explores these materials in any other capacity.

No racism and/or racist language. No hate speech of any kind.

No bashing different dynamics/preferences when it comes to the ship. (Meaning, no bashing/mocking Bottom!Ryan, Bottom!Shane, switching, and so on, dom/sub dynamics, none of that shade. Be nice.)

No bashing of any kind to the family, friends and significant others of the boys. Be respectful. If you need a villain to your story, we suggest you to create an original character.

Works that are not tagged under Ry*n Berg*ra/Shan* M*dej and Shyan Exchange 2019 on AO3, will not be added to the collection nor allowed in the Exchange. If you have doubts about AO3′s tagging system, please send us an ask.

AFTER you’ve done that, send us an ask with your AO3 username, how many prompts you requested and if you may be able to be a pinch-hitter.

In case of not being able to sign-up as participant, you can sing-up as pinch-hitter after.

We will answer you with confimation that we got your sign-up and you’ll get your assignament in your e-mail on May 26 - 27.

Our Interview With The Dev Team Below The Cut!

Introduce yourself! My name is Hind, but online I go by Yoraee (fans of Breath of Fire may recognize my handle).

I used to make parodies of anime openings and endings featuring the Ninja Turtles (If you REALLY want to you can look them up on youtube by searching for Yoraee!)

I am a HUGE fan of Ninja Turtles, Inazuma Eleven, Cyborg 009, Hetalia, and Ace Attorney! My favorite video games are Saga Frontier, Tales of Destiny, and the Suikoden series.

I joined the RPG Maker gamedev community about two years ago when I started working on Black Crystals. I LOVE it here! :D

What is your project about? What inspired you to create your game initially? *Yoraee: Black Crystals at its core is about Home. Whether it be finding home, returning home, or creating home. Black Crystals features a large ensemble of characters, each with their own story and struggle, all of which revolve around this central theme.

How long have you been working on your project? *Yoraee: About two years now.

Did any other games or media influence aspects of your project? *Yoraee: Yes! The jigsaw chain coop system and the spontaneous leaning system featured in Black Crystals' combat system are based on similar mechanics in the PS1 game Saga Frontier. Of course I added my personal touches to these system to make them less of direct copies. The Interact and Talk system is inspired by Undertale in the sense that a battle can be concluded without the need for combat. In Black Crystals, however, you are able to interact with the environment and alter it, so you can actually see the results of your choices in battle and how they change subsequent choices.

Have you come across any challenges during development? How have you overcome or worked around them? *Yoraee: Definitely! The main two challenges for me are time and motivation.

Since I work full time, the only times I can work on Black Crystals are after work or during weekends or holidays, which limits my productivity greatly. I took some leave from work at certain points and basically locked myself in my house and worked on the game's systems, but aside from that work on Black Crystals has taken place during my little free time.

Motivation, well, comes and goes for me. Some days I'm all like "YEAH! THIS GAME IS AWESOME!!" and other days I'm like "what am I doing why am I wasting my time on this". In order to keep myself motivated, I made a habit of posting weekly on my devlog. By posting weekly, I get more regularized feedback, which gives me a good motivational boost to get me through the week till the next update.

Have any aspects of your project changed over time? How does your current project differ from your initial concept? Yoraee: The systems design didn't change much. I had an outline of the features I wanted in Black Crystals; the interaction system, the state of mind system, the coop and leaning system. What came next was implementing these features and refining them.

The characters underwent changes in the way they are written. Arthur and Starsio's personalities sort of switched midway through writing, and the current way they are written seemed more cohesive to the story line.

Several other NPCs also underwent changes. I had a Paprika worker, Anita, for example, who played the role of both herself and Patricia. Later I split the roles and ended up with two characters; Anita and Patricia.

Finally, the whole cats thing was non existent two years ago. They sort of materialized into the game a few months ago :3

What was your team like at the beginning? How did people join the team? If you don’t have a team, do you wish you had one or do you prefer working alone? *Yoraee: Aside from music, which I commissioned, and the plugins, which are contributed by the amazing coders in the community, I'm a one-woman team taking care of all aspects of the game.

I prefer to work alone, simply because my processes are horrible and my pace is very erratic. I think I would drive potential team members mad XD

What is the best part of developing the game? *Yoraee: Seeing how everything clicks and fits together in the end :) The end product to me is always worth it.

Do you find yourself playing other RPG Maker games to see what you can do with the engine, or do you prefer to do your own thing? *Yoraee: I love playing other RPG Maker games. I think you can't help but think and analyse how things are done in a game while playing it if you are a dev yourself. I think its adds to the fun of the experience for me.

Which character in your game do you relate to the most and why? (Alternatively: Who is your favorite character and why?) *Yoraee: My favorite character hasn't shown up yet :( Its a secret for now!

I like Arthur's character in the current story. He reminds me of a younger me, too easily influenced by others and too scared of saying no. While writing the story I feel like grabbing him and giving him a good shake and yelling "Just say NO you passive fool!" XD

Bonus Info: The game has six main characters! :D

Looking back now, is there anything that regret/wish you had done differently? *Yoraee: Yes, the animations. I spent so much time making skills detailed and fluid. I think I kind of lost track of the bigger picture. My animation process is much more improved now, with a more streamlines approach to animations.

Also putting animations together in the Animation tool in RPG Maker MV. I used to manually set up each frame next to the next frame, and it took AGES for animations that comprised 6+ frames. Later it clicked that I could set a template and record the x and y positions and then just move everything around in one chunk to save me TONS of time. I need to make a tutorial on that some time because its such a time saver!

Once you finish your project, do you plan to explore the game’s universe and characters further in subsequent projects, or leave it as-is? *Yoraee: Black Crystals is episodic. The current game is Episode 1. As episodes progress more will become known about the game's universe and characters.

What do you look most forward to upon/after release? *Yoraee: Players reaction and feedback first and foremost, because to me that will be detrimental to whether or not I continue the series.

Is there something you’re afraid of concerning the development or the release of your game? *Yoraee: Just the capability of the RPG Maker engine. I'm worried about the game lagging or dropping frames when played, given the graphics size. Lag to me kills the experience so I'm doing my best to make sure it doesn't happen in Black Crystals.

Also I'm kind of nervous about how people will receive the battle system ~_~

Do you have any advice for upcoming devs? *Yoraee: Learn from the community. Its amazing the amount of resources and knowledge we have in the RPG Maker community. Don't be shy to ask for help if you need it. From my experience the community is one of the best there is.

Question from last month's featured dev @maimiestoybox: What has been the most rewarding part of your game dev journey so far? *Yoraee: Just sharing tidbits of the game and getting feedback from the community. It does wonders to my self esteem :)

Also the feeling of self accomplishment when you see the bits and pieces you created come together and your project take shape. Best feeling!

The Ziam Club’s Song Lyric Challenge: SIGN UPS!

Imagine a Ziam fic based on “Once In A Lifetime” (pst, a Liam favourite) where Liam and Zayn go on a roadtrip, staying safe and away from all the evil in the world, or one based on “All Of Me” by Jonh Legend, where they renew their wedding vows. Well, that’s something you can write or find on this challenge.

What is a challenge?

It’s an event where you can write fan fiction based on a certain prompt, or requirement. In this case, the prompt will be a song.

Schedule:

Sign ups open: Thursday July 3rd, 2018

Sign ups close: Tuesday July 31st, 2018

Betas/Pinch hitters/Brit pickers sign ups: from July 3rd to the end of the challenge.

What is a beta?

In fanfiction, a beta, or "beta reader," is someone who looks over a story before the author posts it publicly, checking it for some combination of spelling, grammar, cohesiveness, flow, plot holes, characterization, etc. (source: fanlore.org)

What is a pinch hitter?

In case an author has to drop out, it's another writer who is available to fill in the prompt the other author left undone. Ideally, this won't happen, but sometimes it does, so the more people who sign up as pinch hitters, the better!

What is a brit picker?

Someone who checks a work of fanfiction in order to ensure that British (or more widely, United Kingdom) characters and settings are accurately depicted, using correct language, spellings, slang and colloquialisms. (source: fanlore.org)

We'll send you your prompt/s via email and you'll have to let us know if you successfully did it, in case of the email going to spam folder, or any other problem.

First check in: Friday August 31st, 2018

What is a check in?

Is just a check up to see how you're doing, no word count limit here, just checking if you need anything. We'll manage the check in with emails (our email is [email protected]), and you should send us on it: your prompt, your estimated word count and a summary of your fic/fic idea.

Second check in and drop out due date: Friday September 28th, 2018

We'll send you another mail to remind you there's only a month left to submit your fic, and to see if, for any reason, you won't be able to finish your fic, so we can assign a pich hitter as soon as possible. Or in case you may be needing an extension. For any case, please contact us as soon as you see our message.

Also, we'll ask you to send us a rough draft of your fic. No word specific word count, but what you have written so far.

Fics due: Thursday November 1st, 2018

Posting starts: Tuesday November 6th, 2018

Author reveals: Tuesday November 20th, 2018

Rules:

Ziam must be the main pairing. Side pairings are allowed, as well as asexual pairings.

The word count is 2k. There is no maximum word count. Feel free to write as much as your creativity demands you.

Your fic has to be completed and beta' entirely when you submit it. We'll be compilating a list of betas, that will grow gradually as betas sign up, and we'll link it to you later on.

Tag sensitive material. If, in any way, you include triggering subjects, like major character death (MCD), graphic description of violence, non-con, etc., we advice you to tag it properly before posting, because these subjects can be upsetting for some people.

There are no limits as to where you may you set your story. You can make it fantasy, post-apocalyptic, canon compliant, anything! Just as long as you stay in the theme of the prompt.

It doesn't matter how experienced or inexperienced you might be. Anyone can sign up, even if this is their first time writing for a challenge.

If you don't have an ao3 account, but still wish to write for the challenge and participate, don't worry! You just have to contact us and tell us your situation. The posting will be a bit different. Once you finish your fic, you should check in with us and we'll assign a date for you to post your fic. And you'll have to either tag it as #theziamclubsonglyricschallenge or state you wrote it for this challenge.

Plagiarism is not tolerated. We will be running all fics through a plagiarism checker to double-check, so please make sure to truly write something original.

If while you're writing you realize that you can't finish your fic, it's completely fine if you have to drop out. You just have to please contact us to our email as soon as you know you won't be able to finish it, so that pinch hitters we assign can have as much time as possible to finish.

Though it's not required to read all of the works shared in the challenge if you can't, try to read as much as you can/would like to, and support the author's work by leaving a comment. It could be about anything: your favorite part of the fic, a quote you liked from it, what it made you feel, etc. But please be respectful. No flaming, kink shaming, personal attacks, etc. Spread the love and support.

Please follow us on our social media for updates, and add our email address ([email protected]) to your email account, so we don't get sent to your spam folder, and because all of the major information will be sent to that email.

Also, please help us spread the word of the club and this challenge, even if you're not signing up. By reblogging, liking, sharing around, etc.

Greetings from Miraland! Love, the POPNikki Team

That’s all of us. All 30+*. This is the team that’s worked (for a lot of us daily) since May to brainstorm, draft, and bring life to this crazy vision-turned-project.

Now that we’re literally 30 days from Zine launch (and two weeks away from launching Site + our YouTube channel), I want to introduce you to everyone because POPNikki is not just the simple FanZine Project I started out asking fans to join. It’s since become a collective of like-minded creators, and don’t you think you’d like to meet all of us?

*NOTE: Our FanArt Team Co-Lead Kira is technically missing from this group shot, but she’s with us in spirit and despite a busy schedule WILL make an appearance in our Summer Zine after all! ^^ Also not pictured is Site Team’s periidote and IRL Team’s Luna-- also with us in spirit!

Team Leads

POPNikki is divided into three divisions and each has its own subdivs requiring, well, WORK. The following group of Contributors help me keep each sector running smoothly (including a Contributor named Lilly who you’ll meet in the next section!).

The Librarian: Editor-in-Chief of POPNikki Zine and the founder of this operation, I have a toe in every division if I really think about it. But my personal skillset lies in brainstorming, cheerleading, and editing, which is why I head up the FanFic Zine Team and Co-Lead FanVid with Sea. ^^ Follow my blog for LN Resources. Clow: Site Team Co-Lead, Developer, and Zine Editor (read: my partner-in-crime), Clow is a great collaborator who can take a vision, no matter how messy and turn it somehow into exactly what you need + want. Clow’s creative but modern style (and way of thinking) is reflected in the Site she’s helped design (can’t wait for y’all to join and see! ^^). Yoko: Unfortunately Yoko is taking a break from Tumblr, but when Site opens, we’ll update with a way to reach her! Yoko is the other Site Team Co-Lead and Developer whose incredible patience and research skills have helped bring Site to fruition.

Ms. Loki: Ah, Loki... What can I say that you don’t already know? When I can’t find my head or my glasses (which often leads to me consistently uploading the wrong things), Ms. Loki is right there going above and beyond the call of IRL Team Co-Lead. Not only does she manage a group of Contributors (and I swear, most days, me!), but she also finds time to Contribute, herself! Look forward to her art and articles as she’s become a key part of our FanArt and IRL Teams. (And if you’re not already following for ALL OF THE LN THINGS... ^^ Ms. Loki is usually the OP!)

Val: FanArt Team Co-Lead Val has really had to step up this season due to an unexpected scheduling conflict. "Single-handedly” juggling a whole team of artists using a collaborative leadership style, Val has shown not only her skill as an artist but as a leader this term. Follow her art blog for a peek at her versatile art style or her personal blog to reciprocate the support she’s shown to POPNikki this Summer~

Sea: My FanVid Co-Lead and one of our three video editors, Sea is just amazing to work with. Perhaps it’s her eye for beauty (or the fact that she can find the beauty in everything), but every conversation ends in laughter and every problem finds a solution. She’s always ready to cheer our team on, so please do the same for her (and we’ll be sure to link you to her personal YouTube channel after Zine Launch!).

Dayan: IRL Team Co-Lead and Artist, Dayan’s ideas and participation have both played integral parts in the fruition of this project. Dayan almost bursts with creativity and an energy that really keeps you going. Did you know that in addition to her LN Blog, she also has another blog for her art? I’m such a fan of all our Contributors, but there’s something so lovely about Dayan’s style that I can’t help but share every post. I feel so lucky to have her on board, and y’all are lucky too because you won’t have to wait for Zine before seeing some of her work. She’s also been working on a very fun Site Feature that will meet you guys once we launch! ^^

*Kira: FanArt Team Co-Lead (and supposed to be on break for this issue, Kira did a few of the background illustrations for Zine articles I know you are going to LOVE! If you don’t follow her LN blog, you’re missing out on a wealth of .png and background resources.

Lilly: Despite a busy schedule offline this season, our Social Media Manager Lilly still managed to pull off a very special project, complete IRL and FanFic write ups, edit, and head the Social Media subdiv by some miracle over the past few months (thank you so much). Lilly’s eye for detail has been extremely valuable and so when you go to follow her LN blog, be sure to note how you’ll only be getting the good stuff over there ;) You may also get to chat with Lilly at some point if you follow us in her domain-- the POPNikki Tumblr (and soon, our other social media).

Red: Our IRL, Site, and Social Media Contributor, Red, has been such a gift to this project. Fishbone: The more I work with Fishbone, the more I fall in love with her work. An artist who’s willing to try different things (no matter how crazy they sound) until they work, Fishbone is such a dedicated and positive team member. Welcome to summer in Riverdale, campers! Camp Riverdale - an all ship, all character inclusive event will have two sessions this summer. Session 1 will be AU themed and run from June 29th - July 9th. You are welcome to post content from any of the four prompt themes during that window! Don’t forget to tag #riverdaleevents in your first 5 tags!

It was funny one summer of anime I was reading this really cute manga about this girl who maxed out her level by killing nothing but slimes, the same time as everyone was getting into that other anime call “that time i was reincarnated as a slime” super weird that these things happened fairly close to each other.

Oh well let's talk about fighting some slimes.

Welcome back to another video here on Mummified games. My name is Tony and today we're going to be taking a look at the RPG Roguelike Haque by Super Try.

This is another one of these roguelikes where you are asked to pick one of three characters to go run though these dungeons. And try to get as far as you can.

The game has a heavy retro feel to it. And I mean heavy retro as in they let you turn on CRT scan lines and a faux dirty screen to make it feel super rough and hard to see...

Ah yes the anarcho-retro style. So in love with old graphics that were going to actively make the experience as basic as possible on your nice clean 1080p monitors and TVs. The chaotic Evil of game graphics.

Luckily if you don't want to play with dust and crap all over your screen, then grab some monitor cleaner

And if you don't want the fake dirt in the game then you can turn it all off along with the CRT scanlines. Doing this will make it all crisp clean sharp pixels.

Anyway moving on from that small personal setting.

The game starts when you first load it up asking you to impot the date. But no matter what you type it does the right date. And that was cool when it happened. You can just press the same key over and over again to progress though this intro but it might also be fun to just pretend you're inputting these commands.

I don't have any video of this because I started playing the game and forgot to hit the record button on OBS. So yeah. Sorry.

So once you’re in I highly recommend you play the tutorial and figure out what everything means. The symbols and art that exist in this game are fine. And once you know what they stand for it makes sense, but just jumping right into the game can be a little deep.

The controls are fairly simple, similar to the controls of a game that I reviewed earlier called Midboxx where you can click around your character, selecting the squares around them and moving to the next squares. And also attacking this way.

Hitting “I” will bring up your inventory and you can also see what you have equipped. Similar to all the other RPGs that are out there.

All the actions you can do are bound to 1 through 4 and also Q W E R at the top left of the keyboard. Compared to ability buttons in some MOBA or MMO games.

QWER being reserved for special skills that your equipped items give you. And then there are 1 through 4 that are quick locations for consumable items. Examples being positions and other limited uses items.

There is a companion that comes with you that fights the monsters you might see in the dungeons.

But that's sort of the basics. There are tons of skills and items that you could use in the game that you could just hold right click over and they explain the spell.

Once you get out of the tutorial the actual game starts with you picking one of 3 different random skilled and stats characters at the start. They’re nowhere near your typical archetypal characters, sometimes you can get a sorcerer that is a great fighter. Sometimes you can get a Necromancer Mushroom that spews spores everywhere. And then there sometimes is a werewolf that you can play as, also.

It's hard to tell you about this game because there isn't a lot that sets it apart from other Roguelikes there are.

The music is fairly basic, and now that I stopped playing the game I could not tell you what any of it sounded like. I know there was a sort of chime sounding song that would play in the shops and that was different from the other songs.

Oh there is a fun idea they put into the shop mechanic.

There's no money or currency in this game. So the shopping experience is a barter deal. Where you select the item you want to buy and then select the items you would want to trade for it. And the game gives you a percentage of if that deal would go through or not. That's actually interesting.

Especially since the chance of the trade going through is the same window in the game where they show you the likelihood of the attack you're about to do will land or not. So that's fun.

There's a sight range thing... *sigh*

There is just nothing to really talk about in this one. It's all just more dungeon crawling fighting more enemies.

There is a story going on with the program being corrupted. And there is an old man that I was halfway through level 3 or 4 when I was thinking okay when is he going to turn on me? And turns out to be a bad guy.

Idk why i thought that might happen but after beating the level one skeleton boss he said something to me that i thought was super ominous. All while the screen was glitching out a bit. Very weird.

Having played this for about an hour and a half I didn't get really far into the story part of this Roguelike. Again a fault of the genre. Your story can't be super long or hard to reach if the player is going to die over and over again.

While playing this game I found myself taking into account the same fighting style that I adopted in Crypt of the Necrodancer. Where if the monster i'm fighting is about to attack i just move back one and they have to spend their turn to move forward.

The problem with this strategy is that the game does not clearly show you how long it is until the other character will take their turn. So you might move back one and then it turns out you have more time until they do their thing.

I feel like this one is going to be the same thing I say about most of the games that came in the Racial Justice Bundle. If you bought that bundle then sure go play this game since you have it. Go find it in your collection and give it a whirl.

But as for a recommendation to go out and pick it up. I'd say unless you really need that crunchy pixel roguelike RPG in your life then sure. If not then I'd give this a pass.

I'm sure ill get to another tool or book review soon if anyone was looking for more of those. I'm giving myself a little bit of time every day to read though some of the actual books in this bundle. The next Book club might not be a bundle but a full book by its self. Obviously i'll keep you informed.

Access to discounted rates for Creative Cloud: Adobe offers access to discounted rates on Creative Cloud and Acrobat Pro DC memberships. The Creative Cloud Complete plan includes Adobe Photoshop CC, Illustrator CC, Premiere Pro CC, InDesign CC, and many more products. How much do Creative Cloud and Acrobat Pro DCcost when requested through Charity Digital Exchange?

Charity Digital Exchange’s admin fee for the access to discounted rates is £4. After requesting this access, you'll pay Adobe directly.

For the Complete plan, you'll pay Adobe for the first year of Creative Cloud membership, a discount of 60% off the retail price. Unless you cancel, you'll pay Adobe every year after, a discount of 40% off the retail price. Adobe will state during the checkout process that your contract will renew automatically at standard rates, but you will actually be billed at the discounted rate.

For the Acrobat Pro DC plan, you'll pay Adobe directly at a 13% discount. After the initial one-year period ends, Adobe will automatically renew the membership at the standard retail rate unless you choose to cancel.

Why do the plans' discounts change after the first year?

Adobe's offer to Charity Digital Exchange members uses the same pricing model as its offer to students and teachers. The first year is a promotional rate. Every subsequent year of the Complete plan is discounted 40% off the retail rate. Subsequent years of the Acrobat Pro DC plan are billed at the retail rate.

Why does Adobe not offer Creative Cloud or Acrobat Pro DC as a donation?

The number of design applications included in the suite, the cost of the cloud services Adobe offers, and the transition from a desktop-based to a cloud-based industry make it challenging for Adobe to offer Creative Cloud and Acrobat Pro DC as a donation. Also, by offering Creative Cloud and Acrobat Pro DC at a discount, Adobe can make it available to more organisation types than it could for a donated product.

Why is there an admin fee for the access to discounted rates?

TechSoup (the global partner for Charity Digital Exchange) charges a one-time administrative fee per to support all of their programmes, services, and education, helping nonprofits and charities around the world to use technology to further their missions.

Does Charity Digital Exchange offer a different licensing model than Creative Cloud or Acrobat Pro DC for individuals?

No. Charity Digital Exchange currently offers only access to discounted rates on the individual membership.

Can I get Creative Cloud products with a perpetual license like the previous Creative Suite products offered?

No. Adobe has transitioned to a cloud business model for its former Creative Suite products and no longer offers perpetual licenses for those products.

How is Creative Cloud different from Creative Suite?

Creative Cloud is the evolution of Creative Suite. Most of the products included in Creative Suite are available in Creative Cloud, including many that were not previously in Creative Suite. Creative Cloud offers these products through a subscription model. Complete plan members can pay monthly or annually, and Acrobat Pro DC plan members must pay monthly. Both members always get the latest version of each product. The Creative Cloud Complete plan for individuals also includes access to many online Adobe services and 20GB of cloud storage space.

How is Creative Cloud different from Document Cloud?

Creative Cloud includes apps for designing creative assets, like photos, video, audio, graphics, and interactive content. Document Cloud includes Acrobat Pro DC. Both include cloud-based storage space, which integrates with Adobe's mobile apps. The Acrobat Pro DC plan also includes the Adobe Sign service.

How is Acrobat Pro DC different from previous version of Acrobat Pro?

Should I choose the monthly or annual payment schedule for the Complete plan?

The total price for the year is the same for both payment schedules, and you must agree to a one-year contract obligation regardless of the payment schedule you choose. The difference between the two payment schedules is only how often you pay, not how much you pay. Acrobat Pro DC plan members must pay monthly.

How many Creative Cloud and Acrobat Pro DC memberships can I request?

You can get as many Creative Cloud individual memberships as your organisation needs through Charity Digital Exchange’s access to discounted rates. You just need to request one product for each individual who needs a membership. Each membership is valid for one user on up to two computers.

Do the applications run in a browser?

No. You install and run the Creative Cloud desktop applications, like Photoshop and Illustrator, directly on your computer.

How many computers can I install Adobe software on?

Adobe allows each user to install its software on up to two computers. This can be home and office, desktop and laptop, Windows or Mac, or any other combination. However, you can't run the software simultaneously on both computers. If you install the software on more than two computers, you will need to deactivate the software first on one of the computers.

Do I need to be connected constantly in order to use Creative Cloud or Acrobat Pro DC applications?

No. Your Creative Cloud desktop applications are installed and run directly on your computer. You only need to be online to install your software and if you are using the Creative Cloud or Acrobat Pro DC services like syncing your files. An Internet connection is required the first time you install and license your desktop applications, but you can use the applications in offline mode with a valid software license. The desktop applications will attempt to validate your software licenses every 30 days. For annual members, you can use the applications for up to 99 days in offline mode. Month-to-month members can use the software for up to 30 days in offline mode.

Do I need to store all of the files I create with Creative Cloud or Acrobat Pro DC in Adobe's cloud storage?

No. You can save all of your files to your computer and share only the ones you want.

Can I install and use Creative Cloud or Acrobat Pro DC products on public access computers in my library or nonprofit public access computer lab?

No. This offer is only valid for users who are employees or volunteers within an organisation.

Can I renew my Creative Cloud or Acrobat Pro DC membership with Charity Digital Exchange’s access to discounted rates offer?

My organisation already has one or more memberships at retail rates. Are we still eligible for additional memberships at the discounted nonprofit rate?

Yes. Existing individual memberships are ineligible for the discounted nonprofit rate, but an organisation can request new memberships at that rate for individuals who don't have them.

Are Creative Cloud or Acrobat Pro DC memberships transferable? Can a new employee or volunteer use a former employee or volunteer's membership for the remaining contract obligation?

Individual memberships are managed on an individual level, and the user's email address is connected to the Adobe ID. With individual memberships, your organisation can't change the member's Adobe ID or password, so you should make proper billing arrangements when an employee or volunteer leaves.

What happens if I cancel my Adobe Creative Cloud or Acrobat Pro DC membership?

If you cancel within the first 14 days, Adobe will issue a full refund. If you cancel after the first 14 days, Adobe will refund half of your remaining contract obligation. Regardless of whether you pay annually or monthly, you are still obligated to pay for half of the remaining year's membership.

After you cancel, Creative Cloud and Acrobat Pro DC applications will stop working. However, you will continue to have access to your Creative Cloud membership's free benefits, including 2 GB Creative Cloud storage or 5 GB Document Cloud storage and use of certain services.

Will I lose all my files if I leave Creative Cloud or Document Cloud?
