Dateline July 1863, General Meade commands the Army of the Potomac at the Battle of #Gettysburg. No, this isn’t #PA this is #Jupiter, #FL and the #jupiterlighthouse , lying between the Cape Canaveral Lighthouse and the Hillsboro Lighthouse alerts sailors of its presence. Before his famous command during the #uscivilwar , then Lieutenant Meade made the original plans for this #lighthouse in 1853. The lighthouse would ultimately be completed in 1860. During the Civil War itself, the Confederates disabled the light so as not to aid the Union naval blockade. It would remain dark for the duration of the conflict. It stands at the confluence of the #loxahatcheeriver and #indianriver Picture taken from across the Loxahatchee River at U-Tiki restaurant. Visitors can climb the internal stairs to get to the top for a commanding view of the region. Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse and Museum Launches Digital Tour Experience Through Their New Mobile App

We are pleased to announce that Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse and Museum in Jupiter Florida has launched digital tours in their new app created in partnership with Cuseum!  

Founded in 1972, the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse and Museum is a nonprofit organization that is operated by the Loxahatchee River Historical society! Quick on the heels of the Society's founding, the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse and Museum opened its doors just one year later in 1973. The society has been serving as Lighthouse operations manager since receiving a long-term lease with the US Coast Guard in 1994. 

Situated on a stunning 120 acres of National Conservation Lands, the society aims to educated visitors about the rich history of the land, as well as promote stewardship and preservation; however, it is also a popular spot for weddings and other special events! 

We are excited to partner with them as they continue to provide a rich and diverse experience to the people of Jupiter and beyond!  

Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse and Museums’ new app is available for free and can be downloaded from the App Store.

Happy National Lighthouse Day! What a fantastic day to celebrate the oldest structure in Palm Beach County. Built in 1860, the top of the tower is 153 feet above sea level and can be seen from 28 miles for those heading in from sea. The cost to build the structure was about $60,000 which is about the same amount our government blows through every 1.5 seconds. Crazy, but true........

The Knights temporarily went to #JupiterLighthouse thinking the area would offer their kids a better chance for school. When that didn’t turn out to be the case, they returned to #HillsboroLighthouse. Head Keeper Thomas Knight found out that if there were just 5 kids in an area, the state had to provide a teacher. So #onthisdate in 1922 “Keeper went to Ft. Lauderdale to see School Superintendent.” For him to agree they need a classroom. It is in this photo. Can you guess where it was? The closest cottage to the ocean was the Head Keepers home. Knight converted the storehouse behind his house into a 1 room schoolhouse. The teacher would also live in the Knights cottage for the duration of the term. If I were to ask many if #ww2 #ww2history was fought on the mainland US, many would say no. However the #battleoftheatlantic was perhaps one of the longest battles, essentially fought for the duration of the conflict. In this picture in #jupiterflorida is a building constructed by the #usnavy . Of course the #jupiterlighthouse is nearby and originally the naval station was located to staff the lighthouse as early as 1854. During #worldwartwo #navy personnel lived in these quarters on #jupiterinlet and this building was part of a triad of buildings making up a Direction Finding Station built on what was then called Station J. It was developed to locate German submarines torpedoeing vessels off the coast of #florida As the war in Europe ended this station was closed in July 1945.
