Mississippi and Oklahoma propose laws against students who identify as nonhuman animals
This article was originally written by Orion Scribner @frameacloud on January 18, 2025 on the Otherkin News blog on DreamWidth: https://otherkinnews.dreamwidth.org/95979.html
For the third year running, Republicans in the US have once again continued to write "anti-furry bills." On January 17, Republicans introduced Mississippi House Bill 1060 (MS HB 1060), which you can see for yourself on the state government's site, though you may need to enable Javascript if your web browser doesn't display it properly: https://billstatus.ls.state.ms.us/2025/pdf/history/HB/HB1060.xml Currently, this is the bill's official description, as written by its sponsors:
"Gender dysphoria; require school personnel to notify parents of student who request to be referred to as different gender or nonhuman."
Emphasis added. Furthermore, the sponsors wrote it with this summary:
"An Act To Require School Administrators, Teachers, Counselors Or Other Personnel Of The School To Provide Written Notification To The Parent Or Legal Guardian Of Any Student Identifying At School As A Gender Or Pronoun That Does Not Align With The Child's Sex On Their Birth Certificate, Sex Assigned At Birth Or Using Sex-segregated School Programs And Activities Or School Facilities That Do Not Align With The Child's Sex Assignment At Birth, Within Three Days Of Becoming Aware Of Such Conduct Or Request By The Affected Student; To Provide That No School Personnel Shall Be Disciplined Or Suffer Any Unlawful Reprisal For Refusing To Acknowledge A Student By A Preferred Gender, Pronoun Or Animal Species That Is Inconsistent With The Child's Sex Assignment At Birth; To Prescribe The Legislative Intent; And For Related Purposes."
Emphasis added. Despite what the description and summary says, the bill text itself doesn't mention either of the topics that I emphasized here. This leaves it an ordinary example of legislature proposed to discriminate against transgender students in public schools. This is a common pattern in anti-furry bills, where an early version of the bill mentions students who identify as nonhuman animal species, to try to attract attention, and then the sponsors delete that part later so that the bill can focus on their real intentions against transgender students. Republicans mean for the temporary inclusion of that topic to satirize transgender students and make a comparison that they see as absurd. It's a reference to an urban legend that Republicans circulate, where supposedly schools that let transgender students use the restrooms they want are also providing litter boxes in classrooms for students who are furries. That urban legend has been debunked by the fact-checking sites Snopes and Reuters.
The bill was sponsored by these eleven Republican Representatives: Charles Blackwell, William Arnold, Randy Boyd, Larry Byrd, Carolyn Crawford, Jim Estrada, Greg Haney, Stacey Hobgood-Wilkes, Donnie Scoggin, Joseph Tubb, and Beth Waldo. These are some of the same authors as a similar anti-furry bill from last year, Mississippi House Bill 176, which was also written by the same Blackwell, Arnold, Boyd, Byrd, and Scoggin, plus Dan Eubanks and Jimmy Fondren.
[Edited to add] Another new one is Oklahoma House Bill 1327, by sole sponsor Justin Humphrey. This is basically the same as his bill from last year, Oklahoma House Bill 3084, still proposing that students who identify as animals should get picked up from school by animal control. He specializes in introducing bills that sound bizarre to attract attention, and later he cleans them up so they'll pass into law. He prefiled it on December 30th so that it will be introduced on February 3.
Anti-furry bills similar to this one began in 2023 with North Dakota House Bill 1522, Oklahoma Senate Bill 943, Indiana Statehouse Bill 380, and a proposed amendment to Montana Senate Bill 544. 2024 had Oklahoma House Bill 3084, Mississippi House Bill 176, and Missouri House Bill 2678. No anti-furry bills have yet passed into law as such. Fellow volunteers and I have been reporting on these in the Otherkin News blog all along, which you can read in the tag for that purpose. Don't like this bill? If you're a US citizen, voting is only one of your powers to shape the laws that you live under. In the recording of my polycule's panel about anti-furry bills, skip to the timestamp 23:44 to hear what ordinary citizens can do. In the written script of our lecture, see Slides 21 through 25.

Trevor Hudgins Award Watch List + Press Release
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE February 1, 2025 Media Contact: Matt Ankenbrandt Sports Information Director │ Small College Basketball 616.780.1335 www.smallcollegebasketball.com
2025 Trevor Hudgins Award Top 25 Watch List Announced
Kansas City, MO – The Nationals Awards Committee and Small College Basketball are very happy to announce the Trevor Hudgins Top 25 Watch List for the 2024-25 season. On a yearly basis, the Trevor Hudgins Award is presented to the senior who has had the best overall four-year (or 5-year) career within Small College Basketball. John McCarthy had this to say about the Top 25 list:
"Congratulations to the 25 players that have made the Trevor Hudgins Award Watch List. Each of these players are in the final year of their remarkable college careers, playing their entire career at the small college level. Of all of the players in the country that have played their entire careers at the small college level, this is a very elite group. I am grateful to the members of our National Awards Committee for their insight and information about many players under consideration for this list."
The award is named in honor of Northwest Missouri State’s Trevor Hudgins, who had a historic career with the Bearcats. He led the Bearcats to three consecutive NCAA Division II National Championships. During his career, Hudgins started in every game and never missed one. He also never lost an NCAA Tournament game, leading the Bearcats to a remarkable 17-0 record in the NCAA Division II National Tournament. Hudgins was named the NCAA Division II Player of the Year in back-to-back seasons in 2021 and 2022. He holds both the NWMSU scoring and assists records and finished his career with 2,829 points, which ranks first all time in the 110 year history of the MIAA.
The 2025 season marks the second time that the Trevor Hudgins Award will be awarded. In 2024 KJ Jones of Emannuel College was named the inaugural winner. On March 1 st , the list will be reduced to 15 players. The video of the finalists will be released on Saturday April 5 th , and the award winner will be announced through a video presentation on Monday April 7 th , at halftime of the NCAA Division I National Championship Game.
Considerations for the Trevor Hudgins Award are overall career statistics and achievements, team achievements, awards, and personal character. The player must have played his entire career at the small college level. This is the highest award given to a four-year (or five-year) player within Small College Basketball. The overall intent of the Trevor Hudgins Award is two-fold: 1) To keep the collegiate legacy of Trevor Hudgins alive and continue to tell his story to the next generation, and 2) To provide a national platform to honor outstanding players – and ultimately one player – within small college basketball on an annual basis. The Trevor Hudgins Award is sponsored by Northwest Missouri State University and the Scribner Family Foundation Fund.
The Small College Basketball National Awards Committee consists of the following coaches: Gary Stewart – Stevenson(Md.), Chris Briggs - Georgetown (Ky.), Bill Dreikosen - Rocky Mountain (Mont.), Mark Berokoff –Oklahoma City, Mike Donnelly – Florida Southern, Sam Hargraves – Olivet (Mich.), Richard Westerlund – Northwestern (OH), Chase Tiechmann – Florida College, Aaron Siebenthall – Ottawa (Kan.), Mark Vanderslice – USC – Aiken, Matt O’Brien – Southwestern (KS), Chris Wright – Langston (OK), Ben Thompson – Emory & Henry, Justin Leslie – Midwestern State, Raul Placeres – Maryville College (TN), Chris Martin – Loras (IA), John Lamanna – Whitman (WA), Brian Miller – MSOE, Justin Downer – Point Loma Nazarene.

Not as bad as I thought. The Baldoni team has to rework the papers and refile. I'm betting he does so as soon as possible. He's going after her hard. She tried to ruin his life and career.
The Washington Post
Judge tosses Justin Baldoni’s lawsuit against Blake Lively, New York Times
Story by Herb Scribner
https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/crime/judge-tosses-justin-baldoni-s-lawsuit-against-blake-lively-new-york-times
A federal judge in New York dismissed Justin Baldoni’s $400 million defamation lawsuit against Blake Lively on Monday, a significant step in the sprawling legal saga between the two “It Ends With Us” stars.
Baldoni sued Lively and her husband, Ryan Reynolds, in January, accusing the Hollywood power couple of trying to hurt his career amid the press tour and production of “It Ends With Us,” an adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s best-selling romance novel with the same name. He also sued the New York Times, alleging that the newspaper published an article heavily relying on Lively’s account against Baldoni without fact-checking.
The judge ruled Baldoni’s team has until June 23 to refile some of his claims.

4/5/13: Astros Pick Up First Win
OAK: 000 200 010 // 3-7-0 (LoB: 10) HOU: 000 022 00x // 4-6-1 (LoB: 3)
WP: Cisnero (1-0); LP: Straily (0-1); S: Veras (1) HR: Dominguez (off Straily; 1 on); Young (off Wright; 0 on)
The Astros scored 4 runs late - 2 in the 6th on a 2-out, 2-run home run by Matt Dominguez and 2 more in the 7th on a 2-out double by Justin Maxwell - and held on to pick up their first win of the season and their first win as members of the American League. Starter Brad Peacock went 5.1 innings, allowing just 4 hits but also walking 5 batters and 3 stolen bases. Eric Sogard had a 2-RBI triple in the 3rd inning, on the heels of a 5-4 double play turned by the Astros that eliminated the 2 leading base runners, and Chris Young added a home run in the 8th, but it just wasn't enough for the Athletics, who stranded 10 runners on base during the game, 4 of them in scoring position. José Veras finished things off, picking up a 4-out save.
(Strat notes: Two home runs, a 2 RBI triple, and a 2 RBI double led to all the scoring here, but there were a couple of d20 rolls that turned possible homers into doubles - which ended with the runners stranded. Straily only managed 1 strike out in 5.2 innings, a far cry from the 11 he had in 6.2 innings in the real-life counterpart. The Astros' defense is all sorts of bad; they're lucky Marwin González only had 1 error, because there were numerous hits to him and his 3e32 defense at short - including 4 by Yoenis Céspedes himself [one of which resulted in that error].
I can't find a definite list of the A's opening day 25, but either way, they seem to be short a couple of relievers. That, plus injuries to Scribner and Milone, are why Chavez is up with the team. The Astros also appear to be down a couple of relievers.)
Houston 1-3; Oakland: 1-4 Next game in replay: MIA (Sanabia, 0-0) @ NYM (Hefner, 0-0)
