one of the feminist aspects of the world trilogy that I love to chew on is just how exactly it subverts the prioritization of men. because you have your female lead and male love interest. which is already hugely subversive for the action sci-fi sphere. the genre is so famous for women being irrelevant that it is one of the primary spheres for the fridged wife, femme fatale, damsel in distress, etc. etc. so much of the genre is built on man’s pain at the expense of women, like, just as a class of people. dead wife, dead mother, dead whatever woman is available.

but world prioritizes these women. rather than being defined by the men in their lives, owen is the one defined by three central female characters. they all exist as characters outside of him, and much more so than he exists outside of them.

owen’s motivations are always spurred by one of them. he interacts with the indominus because of claire. he goes into the jungle because claire asked him to come with her. he goes back because claire asked and blue needs him. he drops everything to save maisie and blue’s daughter. even in his more nuanced emotions, such as the guilt about training raptors via FK, it’s always truly about The Girls. he lead the way because he got too attached to something close to four daughters. his narrative role is always to support that of the three largest female characters, not eclipse it.

but you take blue, and even a female dinosaur is prioritized by the narrative. she loves her father but she wants to be free. she got one taste of freedom, and she can’t imagine being in a cage again. she’s a wild animal. the second most intelligent creature to currently exist. she is not just his pet. she is something scientists are vying to capture and she is ushering in scientific breakthroughs via parthenogenesis.

and there’s maisie. she loves her father, too, but it’s mothers that hold the most weight. she feels like she isn’t a person because she’s just a clone of someone else. she’s a science experiment that can talk. and she takes it out on claire because motherhood is what matters to maisie and the narrative. the complex, and sometimes difficult, bond between female family members is what truly matters. she is not defined by having him as a father, but he is defined by being her father.

then there’s claire. the objective lead and narrative driving force. she is so unambiguously an independent force that is is laughable to insult her with the title of love interest. the narrative prioritizes her again and again. her guilt, her family, her wants, her needs. it’s her guilt about the park that sets events into place. it’s her desire to have the biggest and best theme park that sets the pieces in motion. he is in the narrative when she WANTS him to be and only because she does (notice how his introduction in the first two movies is because she seeks him out). the narrative cares about owen because claire cares about owen. he is defined by loving her, but she isn’t defined by loving him. that is her momentary wife in the fridge (plane crash) and her damsel in distress (all of jw2015). claire gets the ejection seat and keeps moving because she is the lead and he goes down with the plane and searches for her because he is the support.

he’s said for a long time that he might retire after this worlds. he’ll make the final decision after worlds, i think. he’s been injured a lot. i wish he would go to the olympics again, but i understand why he would retire ;;;;

Lmao i just realize Nathan's 3A on Worlds SP are always cursed. Like literally no clean sp 3A since his junior worlds debut. Remember when he potato medaled on JW2015 with no clean 3A? When will this curse stop :')). Also lol at him saying "triples are hard, quads are more my thing," and "axels are hard". Like tbh I think 6 quads 1 3A has more success rate than 5 quads 2 3A. But quads tire him more than 3A so rip the best thing on his fs (stsq). When will raf fix his 3A instead of doing 4Lo o(-(

rip, some skaters just suck at axels and nathan’s one of them. so like, i don’t really blame him if he decides to do another quad in order to avoid axels lmao. but it would also be nice if he can patch up this glaring weakness eventually. i think his 3A has gradually gotten better (remember when he used to stalk it halfway across the rink, my god that was painful) but as soon as anything is slightly off with him (boots, nerves, injuries, whatever), the 3A is the first thing to go haywire. i guess everyone has to have an achille’s heel...
