He wakes up to something other than his brother's morning coughing fit.
Breeze ghosts over his forehead and sends a chill down his neck as he opens his eyes. The air smells cold, the way each inhale in makes the back of his throat sting with each breath in, and it digs against his skin with a harsh quickness as a gust of wind blows through the window. He would have roused more fully, had it not been for how early in the morning it still was. The sun hasn't even risen, yet.
It's like his mind itself has been slowed by the cold. His limbs curl up around his torso like that of a dead spider's as he struggles to understand why, resting on his body, is Shin's bedding. The thick, and often lumpy, kakefuton places a mysterious weight over his shoulders until he identifies it, still shaking himself to consciousness.
Looking over toward the open window, he sees shin lying on his bare futon.
It takes him a moment to realize that he's no longer asleep—this isn't a dream—and only a moment longer for his mind to move before his legs can scramble to catch up with his panic, clumsily toppling out from under the bedding to crawl across the tattered old rush-grass tatami, not caring at all that the frayed straw scratches at his arms and legs where bruises from training are freshly imprinted on his skin.
Falling onto his elbows at Shin's side, he struggles back onto his palms before straightening himself to stand on his knees. Reaching up to the windowsill, he strains for the window latch, panting as the cold air hits him, the wind burning at his ears and nose, forcing his eyes shut while he grasps at the handle of the window to yank the shutters closed.
He collapses against the wall below, not stopping to catch his breath. He turns Shin onto his back, watching his head fall limp against the futon. Clutching his shoulders, he jostles his body.
"Wake up!" he cries, "Brother, wake up!"
The ghost of a groan escapes Shin's lips, his eyes fluttering under his eyelids. It's almost impossible to hear him over his own labored breaths. Hands shaking, legs twitching into action, he stumbles onto his feet again to haul the bedding over to Shin, piling both their threadbare kakefutons on top of him, shouldering one side of the heavy layers to turn Shin toward himself, shaking him by the arm this time.
A garbled sound rises in Shin's throat, erupting in a horrid, wet cough as he awakens, burying his face into the crook of his arm while his little brother's face stiffens around a pair of furrowed brows.
"Sorry... little brother," Shin croaks, his voice rough, as though his words were being squeezed through a narrowed gap between his heavy breaths.
His little brother says nothing, at first, though the frown creased into his lips says everything he wishes he could say, trying not to stare as Shin wipes the pink froth of blood from the edge of his mouth, the color of it disappearing into the black linen of his sleeves.
"Here," Shin rasps, "Lie down."
And he does, his weight falling onto the futon, his own body tucked in against his big brother's, raising a hand to dab the perspiration from Shin's forehead with the cuff of his shirt.
"No leaving," he tells Shin sternly.
And Shin nods, weakly wrapping his arms around his little brother.
"I won't," Shin whispers, and waits until the other nods off before drifting back to sleep. ⠀ send 💭 for a memory ⁛ not accepting

The synthesized venoms and toxins have his hands and feet feel periodically cold, his circulation sluggish on and off throughout the day. Even the tips of his ears and nose would feel an aching numbness as he bore through it.
Right now, however, he's comfortably nestled in a bundle of bedding, both his and Shin's futons squished close together near the hearth of the tiny cabin which now burns low and hot on embers to keep their one-room home warm.
His head pokes out from beneath the thick kakefuton piled over him as he looks at Shin.
"Just broth is alright," he replies, even if such had been the answer earlier that morning and yesterday evening.
Shin hates them. He hates them because he’s been through this himself, but it’s somehow even worse to watch his little brother go through it. Shin knows he’s supposed to have blind loyalty to Lord Danzo and the higher ups in Root, but he doesn’t. They make him and his brother do horrible things on missions. They punish him for being rebellious. And now they’re making the only good person in his life sick.
What if Shin’s little brother starts coughing up blood, too?
Small himself, Shin curls around the two pillows that surround his even smaller little brother. Shin pulls a blanket over the little boy and forces a smile.
“I’m sorry I’ve had to keep up with training this week. I hate to leave you alone. But the week’s almost over, otouto. Not too much longer now.” He smooths his brother’s hair. “Do you want something to eat?”
