14 February 2024
14 February 2024 - I got up for a video call interview for a job back in the US. The interview did NOT go well. I felt like I was rambling, and there was a moment where I thought, "am I still talking? What am I even saying right now?" It was not ideal. After the interview, I made some breakfast and packed up my gear. Elise had invited me to be a volunteer park ranger today with her and her summer intern mentee. Elise picked me up around 9 am, and Arnie and Uncle Mitch were hanging out in the front yard, and they were excited to meet Elise. I quickly introduced them to Elise, and then I hopped in Elise's car, and we headed to Pararaha (South of Piha). We met up with Josh (the summer intern), and we drove in two 4WD vehicles out to Karekare Beach, at the end of the Pararaha trail. We drove across the river, and out onto the black sand beach.
Tumblr media
As Elise drove, she drifted in the sand around corners. I screamed with joy! We drove along the beach, with huge waves forming pipelines that would eventually crash in a big splash of whitewater and boils and foam.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As we drove, I looked out West over the ocean and South across the huge black sand beach and East towards the jungle and the Waitakere Mountain Range. It was surreal. We arrived at the bottom of the Pararaha Trail and parked both 4WD vehicles there. We loaded all the dry clothes into Josh's vehicle (which was staying at this spot at the bottom of the Pararaha Trail). We put all the gear for the day and lunches in Elise's vehicle, and Elise hopped in the back; she told Josh to drive (since it was his last day), and she told me to sit in the front seat (so I could enjoy the ride). Josh drove us to the top of the Pararaha Trail. We parked a vehicle there and got ready for our mission: baiting the poison traps. I put on a high-vis orange vest that said "PARK RANGER." We grabbed our gear and started hiking around 11 am. As we hiked down the trail, every time that we saw a pink marker on the trail, we looked around for the traps. We opened up the trap, pulled the old contents out and threw them into a garbage bag, and filled the trap with new poison bait. We did this for probably ten different traps, and each trap took probably under one minute. When we got to the confluence of Pararaha and Blue Canyon, we put on our wetsuits.
---side mission---
After we finished the side mission, we continued down the Pararaha Trail, which followed the river. Some of the trail was just off to the side of the river, but most of the trail was creek-walking through the river. As we walked down the river, there were several waterfalls, Some of the waterfalls were not very steep, and we were able to carefully hike down or scramble down the waterfall. Some of the waterfalls had big pools at the bottom, and we'd jump down the waterfalls into the deep pools at the bottom of the waterfalls (one person would down climb carrying the poison bag so that it didn't get wet).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The canyon got less and less steep, and some point, we were running down the low-grade waterfalls! We stopped for a few minutes to eat our lunches, and we continued hiking out. We got out of the river and onto the hike out trail that leads to Karekare Beach. On this hike out, we refilled a few more poison bait traps. We arrived at the end of the trail and hiked out onto Karekare Beach to our 4WD vehicle around 3 pm. We hopped in, and Josh drove us through the black sand, drifting and fish-tailing, back to the river, across the river, and onto the road. We drove back to the top of Pararaha Trail where the other vehicle was parked. We said goodbye to Josh, and Elise and I drove back to the Park Ranger Depot. Elise dropped me off in Henderson.
Back at the Good Vibes Flat Tribe house in Henderson, Jimmy had brought home Maori raw fish and fry bread, and we had a family dinner with all four of us: Jimmy, Arnie, Taylor, and me.
I'm grateful for Jimmy; he had me fill up Elise's tank with a jerry can of diesel fuel he had before Elise and I left for our mission this morning. I'm grateful to Elise; she thought of me and invited me to join in as a volunteer park ranger! I'm grateful to have spent the whole day with Elise at Pararaha, hiking through beautiful places, seeing gorgeous waterfalls, jumping into bright blue pools. I'm grateful for Jimmy for hosting a family dinner tonight and bringing the flatmates together.

West Auckland
Today was all about waterfalls and beaches. I drove out to the west coast to enjoy the black sand beaches and some of the tracks available in the Waiatakere Ranges Regional Park. I started the day off at Karekare Falls.
Tumblr media
This was the view from the road, but obviously the track gets much closer. It's only about five minutes to the falls. There was no one at the falls when I got there, but a few groups were behind me.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Next, I walked over to Karekare Beach. It felt like their entire surf lifesaving club was there, so it had me wondering whether they were expecting a huge crowd or whether they just all wanted to be together on this Easter Monday. There weren't a ton of people, but more kept showing up as I was walking the beach! I did have a bathing suit in my car, so I could have gone for a swim if I wanted to, but it was perfectly lovely just walking with my feet in the water. It kept spitting on and off, so it was like I went for a swim anyway.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The mist does give it a bit of a dark, spooky vibe! Next up was a drive over to Piha Beach with a stop right by the beach for lunch. Who doesn't love the combination of pulled pork taco + poutine?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Piha Beach is well known for its massive waves, which make it good for surfing, and not so much for swimming. Again, it seemed like the whole surf lifesaving club was out, but they did have to get in the water to corral people back to shore.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I won't lie, I had watched a documentary on TVNZ about people who had gone missing in Piha, and it had freaked me out enough that I wasn't sure I wanted to come out this way. But what better day to do it than a public holiday with hundreds of others. Only a few minutes away from Piha Beach is Kitekite Falls. This is a slightly longer track, maybe 20 minutes one way, and was much busier. The car park was heaving, the trail was busy, and the end of the trail was packed. I didn't stay as long because it was really chaotic and a bit stressful! It did come as a bit of a surprise to me that part of the walking track was to ford the river, but luckily there were still enough rocks sticking out, even if the river was more full than usual!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I thought about heading back after Kitekite Falls, but then I remembered that someone had suggested the Fairy Falls track. Y'all, I should have headed back 😂 Jokes aside, this track is hard. On the way down, it's not so bad, because you're going down. Down steep inclines and hundreds of stairs, and even that had me working up a sweat. You'll see it in the photo someone kindly took for me. I'm sweating, and that was downhill. Now, imagine going back up! There was this little tiny section of falls that you could see from further up on the track, and I seriously considered calling it a day and turning around right there, but I didn't.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So, from that little section of falls back to the top was 336 stairs (and lots of steep incline). I kept miscounting the stairs below it, so I reckon maybe about 500 altogether? But, that doesn't even count the lower section! Once I got to where you could truly see the falls, I decided that was good enough for me. If you look in the picture down below, you'll see that there are more people at the bottom of the falls. Which means, there were still more stairs I could have taken.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But I decided enough was enough, called it a day, and headed back. I had run out of water before this hike, so I stopped at the grocery store on my way back to pick up a Gatorade for those electrolytes! Now I am beat, but it was a good day all around. Fingers crossed the weather does seem to be improving! If it could be all better by Saturday, that would be A+ for me. Oh! And one more thing I noticed in the accommodation this morning. There's a bunny on the fridge! I am going to pretend it's for Easter, but I feel like it's probably more likely that it's up all the time. It's a strangely decorated place - lots of Hello Kitty and plushies and things.

july already and i always forget about this blog. D;
june definitely had its ups and downs, but there were some pretty good highlights.
-one day LA trip for kyuhyun photoism :’) i was so happy. i got shy to take the pictures with him in it, but i got my pics with kyumae^^ also snagged the other version of restart &his time with you single, which made the cashier chuckle. and then i ended up pulling two PCs i already have… :’D one of them was his in n out picture which i love so much, so i couldn’t even be mad. toni ended up asking if she could have it to display with her kyumae pictures too, which made me so happy since she puts up with my delusions more than anybody lmao.
anyway, after photoism/buying albums we had lunch at this restaurant in the same korean plaza, and their brisket and spicy pork were so delicious. then we did some shopping at stussy &cookman and then hung out at venice beach before flying back home. since it was just a 45min flight, it kinda just felt like taking bart at the end of the day. not that i’d ever do a same day flight again…haha
-grandma’s 96th birthday! sang karaoke for literally five hours and somehow didn’t lose my voice after!!
-successfully surprised my brother for his birthday! sadly he is housebound with a torn achilles but luckily my cousins and our friends made it a success :] also made some very bomb filipino spaghetti for the occasion
coordinating it was so nuts because it was a weeknight &rush hour here is terrible. a 15min drive for me ended up taking 35, &my brother’s gf was really stalling bc he was getting hungry LMAO. she told him that doordash would arrive at 6, &we all more or less arrived around that time. so under the guise of coming down to grab the food, she came to meet us &help bring up our party trays, drinks, and the cake. he was so surprised huhuhu. we spent the night eating, drinking some crazy concoction jake put together, watching basketball &playing switch :]
-celebrated father’s day at my brother’s &had filipino food, including the best karekare i’ve ever tasted TT-TT… i wish i brought some home. we didn’t stay long, but it was nice having the whole family together &eating comfort foods while listening to smooth jazz hehe.
-had a nice sister date in livermore!! did some shopping, had kura sushi and some yummy drinks from T% :D
-spent a weekend at our parents’ and did absolutely nothing <3
-suju supershow spinoff halftime livestream!! my first time experiencing a supershow… after all these years… i had to wait until midnight here for it to start and it didn’t end until 3:30am, but it was worth it :’)) kyu looked &sounded amazing, unsurprisingly. haha. the next day my mom wanted to see fancams which was insane to me, she never used to be interested in my interests ;___; i happily showed her of course.
-ended the month with a yummy dinner at a restaurant i’ve been meaning to try, then the next morning i finally cleaned up my yard and brought out the umbrella so i am ready to enjoy the summer evenings :D except i got heat exhaustion after, which knocked me down for the entire weekend. but im feeling better now, so..!!
july should be fun i hope. i have this week off to relax, which i’ve needed. then, hopefully some yummy july 4th food, a concert on saturday, a SD cousins trip coming up, knitting time with friends, and some opportunities to sing some choral music. sounds pretty good to me :]

Mid Semester Break Research
An Angel At My Table - Jane Campion
Just before the mid-semester break, my lecturer recommended that I take it upon myself to watch 'The Piano' directed by Jane Campion as there were some beach shots at Karekare beach in the Waitakere Ranges. Upon researching the shots in 'The Piano' I discovered the director Jane and the Cinematographer (Stuart Drybugh) had previously worked on another film together a few years prior titled "An Angel at My Table" which was also set within New Zealand landscapes. I watched that film and took these screen grabs as inspirations of where I could go with my project. The long depth of field shows the contrast of the different parts that make up the shot work really well together.

Hm, on the note of interrogations... I should have an investigation done on the coterie that’s meant to be keeping an eye on the Piha area. Mortals are starting to speculate about there being a serial killer out that way.
It is an admittedly good location for body dumping. But not when too many people use it.
