Murderbot TV show thoughts
Looking over the casting choice and also who is making the murderbot TV show and I'm just not excited :/
Rambling post with lots of opinions follows....
Tumblr media
"Alexander Skarsgård will lead the series and will serve as executive producer." (source)
:(
All the queer, PoC, ace, aro, agender, non binary actors out there.... All the fascinating choices... who the hell is this. Did the people making this show even read the books, like all the characters in there are PoC. Also, executive producer? To be clear I do not know this actor at all. I am seeing posts that he does deadpan well, and speculation that exec producer roles means he's excited to do the books, which is prob good news.... but as if there's not PoC actors who are also deadpan etc etc?? Also, again repeating other tumblr posts, the effect this will have on fanart, too.
"Martha Wells will serve as consulting producer." Well I'm glad she's getting moneys, but how much influence is she going to have??
although - THIS is why you have to specify if a book character is PoC instead of being vague about it (as white authors seem want to do)! Because otherwise people (esp white people) just assume the character is white! this is just how system racism works, it's not interesting or novel, I'm just parroting what so many PoC authors have pointed out. It means that a character who describes itself in the book as a mishmash of generic human while surrounded by a lot of brown skinned humans somehow gets a casting of Alexander Skarsgård. (even if secunit was explicitly described as having brown skin or being not white in appearance, Paramount might just whitewash the character anyway, but still)
Going on..... "The Weitz brothers will write, direct, and produce under their Depth of Field banner. "
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Pinocchio movie here is a live action disney remake, not the Guillermo del Toro stop motion one. If you're like me and perked up a little, on seeing the title, because you got the Pinocchio wrong.
I guess "Rogue One" was a little interesting if depressing, idk.
The company is also linked to the movie "Prospect" (gorgeous scenery and scifi immersion and really nice soundtrack, but I found the movie rather racist and the characters lacking and I personally didn't vibe with it) and "The Farewell" which I mean to watch because people have told me they liked it.
Well, not much of this combination feels like the Murderbot books, to me, tho. I'm kind of puzzled. Like what are they getting from the books. What am I supposed to expect with "Murderbot diaries" being part of the filmography above.
Well how about the execute producers. " David S. Goyer executive produces alongside Keith Levine for Phantom Four. "
Tumblr media Tumblr media
What in the hell?? Noooo! This is like the direct opposite of the core of murderbot! It's like these people skimmed the skin of space dystopian gun pew pew elements and were "yeah this is what the books are about".
Earlier, I was jokingly telling someone "I feel like these people are trying to make James Bond or the Bourne Trilogy in space or something with Murderbot, sheesh" and I fear that is in fact what is happening.
(deep breath)
Murderbot stars an autistic agender aro ace icon character who in the 2nd book hides away in a transport watching TV shows for weeks on end or whatever and then gets called out for that by Pin-Lee in the 4th book. Murderbot and a university space ship bond over the space ship being afraid to watch its fav blorbo die in a fictional show and also the two do their best impression of trying to act like a human.
Also there's fighting and stuff.
Like, that juxtaposition is the fun of the books - like finally, the awkward get-your-gender-stuff-away-from-me a-spec neurodivergent characters have their day in bringing humanity into space dystopia pew pew gun theater. We want to play in this setting, too.
Oh and the books and SecUnit hate corporations and everyone is genderqueer with neo pronouns and polyamory abounds, and there's PoC everywhere.
"the fact that we're getting the corporation rim version of Murderbot and that everyone is kinda bummed about it" is a pretty good summary.
From a specific hurt/comfort whump blog POV -
How are any of these main producer etc people, above, going to grasp the emotional hurt comfort and humor and warm heart of these books? The Tenderness??
Like listen, I need to be clear, I had a blast watching "Blade" with some people a few years ago. It was great. Really fun late night party movie with the right people, A+ experience. However, do I trust Call of Duty Batman vs Superman any of these people to Grasp The Murderbot Books and Handle the Tenderness. No, I Do No, not especially.
. . . . .
Okay fine haich slash cee, who would you cast and hire as directors producers etc. Well first of all a bunch of queer people and PoC and queer PoC. Do you know how many of us want to play in space opera dystopian explosion gunfight theater too. Also I saw someone suggest Tig Notaro play SecUnit - and honestly, that's a fun idea, I would maybe hire a bunch of comedians and also activist types to grab the dry humor and and absolute abhorrance of corporations that permeates the books.
And I'd get a more indie studio production if possible. I know there's the action sequences and special effects and all that IS important in a genre way. Like we are here for all that. We are here for death agriculture robots attacking people and violent robot fights and space kaboom moments. I personally don't immediately know how or which producers studios etc to hire for all that to be included, while keeping slightly smaller studio vibes. Yes SFX action money, but like, more in the spectrum of doctor who budget money and special effects, if that makes sense.
The gunfights and special effects are still more of a secondary feature in my mind. I want to watch the awkwardness of SecUnit and a room full of caring compassionate researchers fully hit the mark but in the most subtle way. I'm here for Ratthi once again saying "what?" in the middle of like the 5th melee situation he's been a part of and Ratthi still is confused as anything. And also, there's some explosions and space travel happening.
As for actors, I'm not really up on actors much, but these tumblr posts have suggestions.
Actually.... Ok, so I like explosions as much as anyone, but what if some small but acclaimed indie character drama creators made Murderbot. Like what if that was one specific flavor of an adaptation. What if the murderbot books were shot primarily as a quirky indie character study tv show set in space. The filmography of the people making it are like: Indie drama - Indie comedy - Murderbot - quirky indie drama - (implying they made murderbot and then went right back to indie movies I guess) I'd be like, "huh, what version of space gunfight drama are we watching here?". Idk, I think it'd be fun.
thanks for reading along in my murderbot ramblings!

Let Me Do My Job
This strange cross between Murderbot and Voltron because I could. It was written after I'd drawn a picture (which is below).
Staring down the leader of this group was both the easiest and hardest thing Keith had ever done. It hated the emotional reaction that bloomed in its chest at the sight of Shiro alive and mostly in one piece, minus his augmented arm. The others were also alive and recovering from their myriad injuries.
“Next time your SecUnit tells you to run,” Keith said slowly, practically glaring, “you run. You don’t stop and attempt to rescue the SecUnit.”
Sequestered in their corner of the lounge, Pidge looked up from their multiple displays. Their fingers were still typing away as they said, “But…”
Shiro shook his head, stilling whatever argument they might’ve offered. “SecUnit — Keith — is right. We did it no favors today.”
“We don’t abandon teammates,” Hunk blurted out. He was nursing a broken arm and three fractured ribs, and apparently, staying put in medical was advice for other people. The dark-haired SecUnit wanted to shake him a little.
“I can defend myself, and I’m more durable than any of you.” Keith focused on Shiro. “Including you, captain.” Before it lost momentum, it added, “Let me do my job.”
Not words the SecUnit had ever expected to say, but it stood by them with all the ferocity of a lion about to strike. This group of misfits were its humans, and it planned to keep them alive through the rest of this star-forsaken mission.
“Sorry,” the pale-haired princess said, almost too quietly to be heard properly.
“Well, I’m not.” The brown-haired sharpshooter jumped up from his seat and paced the room. “You doing your job and dying would make a whole lot of people unhappy.” A jab at Shiro, maybe, or just earnest belief that the team cared. Keith neither knew nor cared.
“Helpful clients account for approximately sixty-three percent of all my injuries,” it stated with a shrug.
“So what do you propose?” Lance demanded, getting so close they were practically touching noses.
“That you back off and remember I have guns in my arms.”
“Seriously? What the fuck is wrong with you?”
Solid question to which the SecUnit didn’t have an answer. Its governor module was malfunctioning, sure — Pidge’s handiwork — but its other components reported nominal activity. The optimistic numbers failed to explain the uncomfortable feelings rattling around in its organic bits.
The reassuring readouts definitely didn’t explain Keith’s singleminded desire to protect these people, or the fluttering of its non-existent heart wherever Shiro got too close. For fuck’s sake.
“I’m functioning within normal parameters.”
Lance shook his head and backed off a few steps, still very much upset.
“Perhaps we should take a break and regroup in a few hours?” Shiro recommended in his cat-herding voice. Keith had seen better men behave when the commander of this mission asked nicely. It definitely had an effect this time around.
Tension seeped out of the SecUnit’s narrow shoulders, and its eyes softened into something less feral. It stuck its hands in its pockets and took a steadying breath.
Glancing hesitantly up at Shiro, it added, “I’m going to patrol the perimeter.”
to be continued

Another attempt at Keith as a SecUnit. At this point, other than looks, this is basically a totally different character, but whatever. It's a picture -- I am not attaching any deeper meaning to it.
This SecUnit has seen some shit.
IMG ID: a gray-white-and-black drawing of a person with shoulder-length hair who is dressed in a t-shirt and pants. Various augments are visible, and some of them are glowing red. Its eyes are also red. On its t-shirt, there are two words, "caution" in red and "SecUnit" in black underneath that.

Fandom and Interpretation
There was a discussion in one of my Discord servers that gave me lots of thoughts. And I want to share them here before they're not fandom-specific. I wanted to preface it with this is about fandom holistically and not any particular space. And also that this is neither good nor bad, and I'm not assigning judgment here. It just is. Sometimes.
I think all fandom is ultimately interpretive in nature.
You can't read and ingest content without filtering it through your own experiences, culture, and perceptions. Written work relies on the rather flimsy medium that is words; inaccurate and easily misinterpreted, even on the best of days. When people read Murderbot books, for example, they are inherently imagining a future somewhere out in space that doesn't exist through the lens of perhaps the modern world or the science-fiction tropes they're familiar with or whatever else the books might conjure for them. And once the words are ingested, so to speak, anything the fandom creates only adds to the interpretation.
In my mind, there's no such thing as "accurate canon" or "correctness" in the context of a work. We might all agree that Murderbot is a SecUnit, but what that means to each of us is likely going to be slightly different. We might say that a SecUnit has machine parts, and again, we all define machine parts a little bit differently. It feels good to be right, but I think right is overrated when it comes to almost everything.
In a fandom, it can sometimes feel like there's a particular interpretation that's "correct" (and I use the word in quotes for a reason here). Especially in established fandoms where people have had time to collaborate, some interpretations will naturally emerge as the most likely ones or the ones most people like.
And, as that happens, other, less-common interpretations either fade or become no longer canon compliant. Dividing lines can also form around particular interpretations and concepts. I think it's easy to join a fandom and take these as truth, and it's important to question them and the assumptions that underlie them.
In established fandoms, you also see echoes of their beginnings. Like static from the Big Bang. Before some particular established reading emerges, people often feel freer to interpret the works, and those original musings often find their way into established fandom in a weird game of broken telephone. No longer what the original fan intended but still sort of there. For me, CSU handlers are a great example of this.
I feel like it's important to remember that fandom is ultimately people who are working both together and individually to create a vision of a work that was, in and of itself, an interpretation. Pull apart the illusion of cohesion and underneath you'll find splinters and fractured bits. As should be -- we're all too different to suddenly adopt the exact same trains of thought.
The Borg will not take us this night!
And, once there's a particular interpretation (a ship that people like), some fans will make an effort to make it canonically true. In some way, it's a tug of war about whose interpretation is the most correct by making it extra correct somehow. Voltron had this with Keith and either Lance or Shiro. People would stare at a single line of context and argue its validity (or not) to the point of harassing the voice actors.
And finally, people enjoy media for different reasons. Escapists wanting to read a romance novel probably don't much care that some people read Twilight and wanted Edward jailed as a creepy stalker. The point of reading Twilight, for many, was not to enjoy a realistic depiction of a healthy relationship. So while the interpretation that Edward is an a*hole is valid, most people aren't starting petitions to get him barred from all schools across the fictional US where he resides.
All of these are just my ramblings, thoughts I've had for a while but didn't bother to write. And if I have a point at all, it's that fandom is complex and, like any other human space, should be regarded with minimal reverence. Dance even when you're wrong because "wrong" is relative and dancing is beautiful.
