I just want to say how privileged we are to have such amazing students who truly understand how important Kernow Martial Arts is to not only the staff and students but also to the wider community. It's been a while since this has been discussed in the academy then I found my original post from 2017 on the topic. Figured a reminder was overdue... Over the last 15 years great steps have been taken for the development of Kernow Martial Arts in particular regarding our stance against all forms of political, racial, religious, disability and sexual intolerance both within Kernow Martial Arts and the community as a whole. We believe that Kernow Martial Arts should be a place where people of any age, ability, race, faith and sexuality should feel safe and comfortable. It has always been agreed that any individual considered to be discriminatory against any minority groups or individuals, within or outside of Kernow Martial Arts, will not be welcomed within our organisation. Throughout all classes we take moves to promote these core values of martial arts and to continue to create a feeling of inclusiveness for all. We have always hoped that all students and parents will support us in our quest for equality in Martial Arts. We have always had a policy where staff and volunteers should refrain from commenting on any topics which can be considered controversial or could cause offense especially on social media platforms. The recipient of the endeavour award this year has a great many day to day challenges to overcome in an effort to integrate in to wider society: Our winner, Samuel, has a diagnosis of Autism, ADHD, and DCD. When the Doctors at Great Ormond Street hospital told the parent this they literally felt that the future had just vanished. He was 5 years old. Samuel is now nearly 10 and never once in all those years have they let the daily challenges he faces stopped him from wanting to try new things, to be included, and most of all never to submit. He has opened-up the future his parents thought was closed. Before we start let's get one thing straight...Krav Maga is not necessarily the best self defence system in the world and it's not something new. It's only as good as the practitioner and it's techniques have all been seen elsewhere before in other styles. It's the approach and attitude that's different. Its techniques are direct and destructive without any need for complex fancy movements to memorize. Bruce Lee when referencing Jeet Kun Do said to take from it what works for you and leave the rest behind. Krav Maga uses the exact same philosophy, there is no right or wrong only what works for you. If a technique doesn't come naturally in training then it's not going to come naturally under pressure in a real life scenario. That's where hard and repetitive training comes in. Remember the saying train hard, fight easy? Never could that be more relevant than in self defence. Krav is not for the faint hearted, it is brutal and you probably end out battered and bruised, but it's all worth it. Our winner of Krav Maga student of the year is a perfect example of these philosophies. He gives every session 100% and never quits. While training hard he will always respect the abilities of others and it's willing to step up to the mark and offer support to his training partners when needed. At KMA we find people start their training for a wide variety of reasons, some come for fitness, some for self defence and others come to make friends, these are just a few of the reasons. In the case of our senior student of the year, Brin, it was for another reason all together. His original reason for coming was to support his younger brother while he settled in. From the word go he has always been very serious about his training and it has become an important part of his life. He has a natural ability and is a tremendous role model not only for his brother but for the other young adults in our classes. As is typical of boys and their development Ethan struggled initially with his training. All boys struggle with coordination and balance issues as they go through growth spurts when compared to girls of the same age and Ethan has been no exception. However, over the past 6 to 12 months, through hard work and determination, he has started to really show clarity and definition to his techniques while developing controlled power. His keenness to learn is endless and doesn't mind putting in the hard graft to achieve his goals. Our winner of junior student of the year for St. Austell was a tough choice with so many to choose from. In the end the decision was made to award it to Connor. Connor is an amazing young man who has endless amounts of passion and dedication for his training. At the same time in return it's clear that he gains so much from his training in terms of his own growth as an individual. Today we feature Oliver our junior student of the year for Launceston. Oliver joined KMA in 2016 and has worked hard to achieve his Cho Dan Bo ranking (preparation for Black Belt). He has persevered through his training and like all other students of his level, has at one point or another wanted to give in. But, like all students achieving this grade, he was determined to see it through and now thoroughly enjoys his training. In training he shows not only a willingness to learn but also to help others in his peer group with their own training. Continuing on with our feature about our award winners, today's featured winner is Sam who won Camborne senior student of the year. Sam is one of 4 family members training in our Camborne school and holds a junior 1st degree black belt. Sam is a tremendous asset to the club and gives 100% to his training. Over the last few years his skills have really developed. Initially his technique was quite sloppy and cumbersome but now, through lots of hard he is exceptionally sharp and crisp. He is an inspiration to all our younger students which has recently earned him a position amongst our assistant instructor team.
