The first is fanart of Khmel Cherkasova, Decembrist Loparev and healer Efimiya. Loparev crosses himself with each hand differently - his transition from one faith to another. The diamonds are on top because “two aces of diamonds on the back of a blue jacket are the sign of a political criminal.” And, of course, hops as a reference to the title of the book.
Also a picture based on Golding's Lord of the Flies.I thought it must look like something very textured
And Verkhovensky and Erkel - after all, to be faithful means to trust, even with your eyes closed.

open question re. Chernobyl:
So by this point in my readings, I’m pretty familiar with the most prominent names. Or I thought I was, because imagine my surprise when it turns out Andrei Glukhov was 1) a real person and 2) not a miner at all, but SIUR and later head of the Operational Support Group at Chernobyl’s own Reactor One.
Is there a particular reason why Mazin gave his name to a miner? Perhaps was he mis-cited as a member of the mining project in another account? Or perhaps did Mazin contact him to somehow re-orient his characterization? Why was the character not based on Vyacheslav Garanikhin, the Sredmash welding foreman who really did command the heat exchanger dig? Are there Two Andrei Glukhovs out there, in this incident?? Has Mazin mentioned anything about this?
Usually, Mazin’s departures from reality were fairly understandable - Creating Khomyuk and Charkov, giving greater responsibilities to limited figures, and soapboxing at the trial all serve his narrative - making this deviation stand out all the more. It doesn’t serve a clear purpose, to me, and could have been very easily fixed. Does anyone else know how it happened?
@tryingtobealwaystrying I know you’ve been reading  for so much longer, do you know what happened here?
(For fun, under the cut, passages from Higginbotham, the only place I’ve heard of Glukhov or Garanikhin:)
From Higginbotham’s interview tith Glukhov, pgs 133-134, section 8, Saturday. 6:15 a.m., Pripyat:
As dawn broke, word began to spread among those with friends and relatives on the midnight shift at the plant that there had been some kind of accident. But nobody could say exactly what. At around 7:00 a.m., Andrei Glukhov, who worked in the reactor physics laboratory at the plant, was in his flat on Stroiteley Prospekt when the phone rang. It was a friend from the Instrumentation and Control Department. He, too, was at home and had heard that something had gone wrong at the station, but he didn’t know any details. As a member of the Nuclear Safety Department, Glukhov had the authority to make calls directly to the control rooms of every reactor at the plant. Would he mind making a few enquiries? Glukhov hung up and phoned his friend Leonid Toptunov, on the senior reactor control engineer’s desk of Unit Four. But nobody answered. Strange, he thought. Maybe he’s busy. He tried Control Room Number Two, where the senior reactor control engineer picked up immediately. “Good morning, Boris,” Glukhov said. “How is everything going?” “Okay,” the engineer said. “We’re raising power on Unit Two. Parameters are normal. Nothing special to report.” “Okay. How about Unit Four?” There was along silence on the line. “We’ve been instructed not to talk about it. You’d better look out of the window.” Glukhov went out to the balcony. The apartment was on the fifth floor, and from his position just behind the new Ferris wheel, he had a decent view of the plant. But he couldn’t see much out of the ordinary. Some smoke hung in the air above Reactor Four. Glukhov had a cup of coffee and told his wife he would head to Kurchatov Street to meet the bus bringing the night shift back from the plant. They’d be able to tell him what was going on. He waited at the bus stop, but the men from the shift never arrived. Instead, a truck filled with policemen pulled up. Glukhov asked what had happened. “It’s not clear,” the policeman said. “The wall of the reactor hall has collapsed.” “What?” “The wall of the reactor hall has collapsed.” It was an unbelievable idea. But Toptunov would surely have an explanation. Perhaps I just missed the bus, Glukhov thought. Leonid might already be at home. It was less than a fifteen-minute walk from the bus stop to Toptunov’s apartment building. Glukhov climbed to the top floor, turned right at the head of the stairs, and walked to the door at the end of the hall: number 88, handsomely upholstered in red imitation leather. He pushed the buzzer. He pushed it again. There was no reply.
Page break at “As a member of / the Nuclear Safety Department...”
side note, one detail that’s touched me is how many people were friends with Toptunov. Glukhov and Trehub, who were SIUR before him; Trehub remembered him as Lenya. Yuvchenko was from a different office altogether, but still they were friends. It’s one thing that he and Korol agreed to work at Chernobyl together; it’s a very different image to know that Dyatlov also wrote to Vera Toptunova, reassuring her that her son was innocent and had been a good man. I think that he must have been that. I think that he must have been a good person to get to know. I wonder how many more friends he would have made by 26.
Vs.
Garanikhin, p.246, in section 14, The Liquidators:
Final assembly began in June, under the command of Vyacheslav Garanikhin, a towering Sredmash welding foreman with shaggy hair and a disheveled beard who at one point lumbered through the tunnel threatening construction workers with an axe. But long before the project was completed on June 24, temperature readings from Prianichnikov’s sensors had declined yet further, and fear of the China Syndrome abated at last. The heat exchanger, with its intricate network of stainless steel tubing, ten kilometers of control cabling, its two hundred thermocouples and temperature sensors layered in concrete and sandwiched beneath a layer of graphite blocks—the result of weeks of frenzied work by hundreds of miners, soldiers, construction workers, electricians, and engineers — was never even turned on.
(The only administrator or leader mentioned in the preceding passages, which detailed the dig itself, was Veniamin Prianichnikov, a physicist from the plant who made reconnaissance trips under the reactor to survey radiation levels.)
A story involving Garanikhin would have been somewhat different, but I would have understood a slight tweak. But I still don’t understand why the job was given to Glukhov, instead.

The next time Bohun was summoned Jan sat at his side, leaning back against Bohun’s arm. The warmth of his thigh next to Bohun’s distracted him. So did the working of his throat when he knocked back horilka like a soldier, smirking at the brotherhood’s amusement. When Khmel’s Polish scribe was indisposed, Jan briefly took over the function, ink arcing over the hetman’s paper in clean lines like the distant wings of birds. Secret. But there was something pure in it, Bohun thought uncharacteristically: in the nobleman’s steady gaze, his single-minded focus.
Didn’t you think our hearts were with you? Bohun had dismissed it at first. Some men would say anything to avoid death. Yet he knew with increasing sureness that Jan was not that type of man.
-
How are they to know better? the prince had once said. The laws in our Commonwealth are so loose that not half the scum are condemned that ought to be. But if they come into my hands, I never spare them.
11400 words // Jurko Bohun/Jan Skrzetuski, Jurko Bohun/Helena Kurcewiczówna (past & mentioned); AU & somewhat alternate history/canon divergence; illiteracy; Jan would be a terrible spy so suspend your disbelief on this one
A Ruthenian gentleman offers to join Jurko Bohun’s forces after the Cossacks’ victory in Lviv. (Or a blatant ripoff of The Borgias (TV).)
I’m so glad this sort of wrapped up in time for yuletide! I’d also like to credit these WORKS of ART by @flurgburgler & @plain-and-simple-ninja for inspiration, had them pinned while I was working on this ❤️
