There's nothing like a good used book (especially the ones with giant stickers that REFUSE to come off! 😫)

Stickers aside, one the many lessons Dr. Larry E. Rivers (author of "Slavery in Florida: Terretorial Days to Emancipation") passed on to me during my time at Florida A&M was the importance of local history. "How can you study history and change the world if you don't even know what's going on in your own neighborhood?" Dr. Rivers has spent his long career devoting himself to not only exploring the lives and resistance work of slave preachers across the South, but also uncovering the lived experiences of enslaved and emancipated people across the state of Florida 🍊

He often challenged me to think of these questions:

• How did racism manifest in this region?

• How did Black, indigenous, and Latinx people compete, challenge, or cooperate with each other in this area?

• How does the history inform your understanding of white violence and resistance work in the state today?

While we exist in an ecosystem of white supremacy, that ecosystem manifest itself differently across color, communities, and state lines. 🗺 This month, activate your mind by reading up on your state or region's history to decolonize your understanding of history, our laws and politics (and how little they've actually changed), resistance work, and community building.
