Gold deposits are estimated at 700 tons. Kumtor is the last high-mountain mine in the world. The deposit is located in the Issyk-Kul region of Kyrgyzstan, 350 km from Bishkek, 60 km south of Lake Issyk-Kul, 60 km from the border with China. The deposit is mined in an open pit using generally accepted methods of drilling, blasting, loading and transportation. The ore is delivered to a crusher and then to a factory, where the ore is crushed and gold is extracted using the "coal in solution" technology. From 1997 to June 30, 2010, Kumtor produced 7.8 million ounces or 242.5 tons of gold.

The Barskoon canyon road leads to the Kumtor mountain pass. At the top of the mountain pass the temperature droped to 4 deegres Celcius down from comfortable 22-24 at the lake side. The glaciers are so close that you can touch and feel the snow in the middle of the summer.

The Kyrgyzstan government had no option but to seize control of the giant Kumtor gold mine from its Canadian owner because of environmental and safety issues, according to the director appointed to run the project.
In an interview with the Financial Times, Tengiz Bolturuk said the decision to appoint him as external manager was because of “systematic violations” of environmental law by Centerra Gold and its “predatory” attitudes toward natural resources. “I have seen it with my own eyes” he said in some of his first public comments.
In May, Bishkek seized control of Kumtor, the country’s most valuable asset producing 500,000 ounces of gold a year, after President Sadyr Japarov signed a new law allowing the government to take temporary control of mines that violate environmental regulations or endanger lives. It also fined the company $3bn.
The move, which has alarmed banks and investors, came months after Japarov, a nationalist firebrand who fought for nationalisation of the mine a decade ago, came to power in a landslide election.
Gold production is the largest source of revenue in Kyrgyzstan and Kumtor is the biggest single contributor to its gross domestic product.
Centerra, which relies on the mine for more than half of its annual revenue, has responded by launching international arbitration proceedings against the government and seeking bankruptcy protection for its Kyrgyz subsidiaries.
...
Shares in Toronto-listed Centerra have slumped by 40 per cent this year and analysts and investors are increasingly resigned to Kumtor passing into state control.
Over the weekend, Japarov said Kumtor was now 100 per cent owned by Kyrgyzstan, “and only formalities remain”. “That is, the necessary documents must be signed and this will be done,” he was quoted as saying by local media.

Canadian gold miner Centerra announces deal to exit Kyrgyz Republic, sell Kumtor mine
TORONTO — Canadian miner Centerra Gold Inc. says it has agreed to sell its business interests in the Kyrgyz Republic and exit the country, settling a long-simmering dispute over one of the biggest gold mines in Central Asia.
The Toronto-based company says the sale to Kyrgyzaltyn JSC includes Centerra’s two wholly owned Kyrgyz subsidiaries, Kumtor Gold Co. CJSC and Kumtor Operating Co. CJSC, which operate the Kumtor Gold Mine.
In exchange, Kyrgyzaltyn will give up its 26 per cent stake in Centerra and its 77.4 million Centerra common shares for cancellation, worth roughly $972 million.
The Kyrgyzstani government took over the Kumtor mine in May 2021 citing environmental and safety concerns, though the country has also long accused the company of not paying enough taxes.
Centerra has denied those allegations.
The company says the agreement, which requires the support of shareholders, is conditional on the release of all claims and the termination of legal proceedings related to the mine.

Officials said at the time that the takeover would only be temporary; that Kumtor, which has at times in its history accounted for more than one-tenth of the country’s economy, was being placed under a temporary period of state stewardship. But the following April, the government announced it had reached a settlement to take permanent control over Kumtor Gold Company.
Industry observers worry that Kyrgyz authorities are itching to drive out yet more private mining companies so that they can place the bulk of the industry into the hands of a single state-run enterprise.
A lot is at stake.[...]
For Sydykov, the head of the [International Business Council] lobbying group, the drift toward state control portends little good.
“We and the government need to settle on which road to take. Should we follow the market economy with minimal state interference in the economy, as they do in developed countries?” he said. “Or should we go with a command economy, a planned system[...] We are seeing that the [Kyrgyz] authorities are settling on the second path, not only in the mining sector, but also in other areas.”
