Crater (2023)
Film review #572
Director: Kyle Patrick Alvarez
SYNOPSIS: In a mining colony on the moon, Caleb Channing is about to be shipped to the new colony of Omega, after his Father dies in a mining accident, and he is allowed to go. However, this means leaving his friends behind, which he does not want to do. Caleb also wants to fulfil his Dad's last wish and go to a crater outside of the colony, so they decide to steal a lunar rover and head out on a road trip across the moon...
THOUGHTS/ANALYSIS: Crater is a 2023 sci-film. The film takes place in 2257 on a mining colony on the Moon, where teenager Caleb Channing is about to be transported to the colony planet Omega, after his Father died in an accident and as a result his family is allowed to take the seventy five year trip in cryostasis to reach the new planet. However, Caleb doesn't want to go and leave his friends behind. Alongside this, his father told him his dying wish was for him to visit a crater outside of the colony on the lunar surface to see something. To this end, Caleb and his friends plan to steal a lunar rover and travel outside the colony to see the crater before he has to go away forever. The film is a sci-fi twist on the classic teen coming of age adventure, such as The Goonies and Stand by Me. It follows the formula well, and has all the necessary beats to fulfil it's objective. The sci-fi setting gives it an interesting twist, although at it's core it focuses on the characters and their adventure: the setting is simple enough to understand and follow, and doesn't interfere with that. There's a lot of convenient coincidences that make everything possible, such as a meteor shower happening when they are planning to escape so that means no one can go after them, but you can overlook that for the most part. There's times where the film feels a bit too on-the-rails for an adventure, as it doesn't have the capacity to deviate too much from it's destination (being in a lunar rover, they can't really just wander off and find anything new on the Moon), and the flashback narration from Caleb's dad sometimes is a bit overbearing in hammering home what this trip is supposed to be does seem to be a bit counterproductive in celebrating these kid's freedom, but is not a huge problem, and the film stands on it's own for the most part.
The cast of Caleb and his friends are diverse and interesting enough, and give strong performances throughout, which creates a good connection between the characters. Each of them has their own issues and outlooks that bring something to the trip, and there's some conflict between the characters, but it's very minimal. We don't learn everything about the characters, and that's fine, because we're just enjoying this journey with them. There's a message about environmentalism and worker's rights that runs throughout the film, but it keeps it subtle, letting it play off a little more in the finale when the journey is over. The ending is a jump, but one that doesn't diminish or write off the impact of what it does, and gives just enough to keep things hopeful.
The film looks pretty good, with a consistent sci-fi aesthetic that feels used and worn, without it looking too cheap or hokey. The CG isn't top notch, but again, that's just a small thing you can overlook. All in all, Crater is a decent adventure that takes it's subject matter seriously, although this might be a bit too serious for it's target audience. The adventure is fun and easy to follow, the performances are pretty good, and while there are some issues with the film, they are mostly easily overlooked, and don't detract from the experience.

Twins Put Up Nine Against Red Sox!
Twins 9 Red Sox 3 W-Ryan (2-1) L-Criswell (1-3)
The Minnesota Twins headed across town to play the Red Sox in their final road game of the spring. The Twins were ready from the start as Mickey Gasper belted a Cooper Criswell curveball out to right for a lead-off home run. The Twins added on in the second when Austin Martin beat out an infield single and DaShawn Keirsey singled to right. Armando Alvarez singled home a run to double the Minnesota lead. The Twins kept adding on in the third with a Jackson Morales lead-off single and Eddie Julien knocked him in with a double to center. Austin Martin led-off the fourth with a double and Armando Alvarez plated him with a double of his own. With two outs, Jefferson Morales dumped a run-scoring double to center. The Red Sox found some offense in the fifth when Connor Wong walked and Ceddanne Rafaela singled. Rafael Devers singled home a run and Boston was within four after five frames. The Twins added some insurance runs in the seventh when Kyle Fedko doubled to left and Jake Rucker singled hom home. Patrick Winkel followed with a run-scoring double to center and the Twins lead grew to six. The Red Sox quickly loaded up the bases in the seventh. Marcelo Mayer drew a bases loaded walk and Wilyer Abreu hit an RBI groundout to first. The Twins responded with a pair in the top of the ninth and Jacob Bosiokovic put up a zero in the bottom of the ninth.
-Final Thoughts- Joe Ryan looked good in his final tuneup of the spring. He went 4 2/3 innings and gave up one run on three hits with two walks and four strikeouts. Jaylen Nowlin got out of the fifth, Anthony Misiewicz walked three in 2/3 of an inning, and Kade Bragg got out of this mess. Palshawn Pasqualotto struck out two over 1 2/3 innings and Jacob Bosiokovic put up a zero in the ninth. Jefferson Morales, Kyle Fedko, Jake Rucker, Austin Martin, DaShawn Keirsey, Armando Alvarez had two hits. The Twins hit 8-for-19 with runners in scoring position and left eight men on base. Tomorrow, Thomas Harrington will face Bailey Ober as the Pirates come down.

C.O.G. director Kyle Patrick Alvarez talks about Jonathan in Black Book magazine, September 2013:
https://blackbookmag.com/arts-culture/film/director-kyle-patrick-alvarez-on-adapting-david-sedaris-and-bringing-c-o-g-to-the-screen/
I interviewed Jonathan last week. Although very much unlike David, he seemed like the ideal person for the role. I’ve been a fan of his for a while since I admittedly loved Spring Awakening.
Ohhhh. I’ve actually only heard certain songs from it, but the staying power it has never ceases to amaze me. I mean, John Gallagher was a huge hit this year, Skyler, Leah Michelle, it’s crazy the amount of people who have come from that. I’ve worked with actors and musicians that were involved with it before it hit Broadway even. What’s crazy is that one of the songs in my first movie was by this singer Chris Garneau who was in the original [Spring] Awakening workshops and Duncan Shiek produced his first album and they recorded it during Spring Awakening. So the first song in Easier With Patience that plays over the first sequence is from that album and when Jonathan saw the movie he was like, my voice is in your movie! He’s one of the backup singers because they just recorded the background vocals with the cast. So that was funny.
He told me that when you two first spoke and he had his reservations about the role, you told him to stop listening to David’s audio books, that you wanted to make it your own. So how did you two approach developing the character?
What was interesting was that he didn’t think he was right for this, but I was looking to cast someone as this character I’d written, which is some kind of extension of David in a way, but I think David greatest trait as a writer is is self-awareness. It’s that reflection and ability to look back that makes him such a great memoirist. But I wanted the film to be present, to not have voiceover; I didn’t want it to be a character looking back at something. So if you strip away his self-awareness you’re left with someone who has a lot to lear. So that was where the character grew out of. Jonathan is able to play someone—even though he’s not like this at all in real life—with a certain confidence, in a way that’s both humorous and still watchable. A lot of people who play humorous, it comes across as very off-putting, and I knew this was an unlikable character. So I knew I had to cast someone who could still be likable through it. But it’s hard to find that in an actor. If someone’s going to be in every scene of a movie, it needs to be there no matter how daring or challenging you want the performance to be. There has to be some sort of inherent, unknown quality that has to be able to sustain itself and I knew I could trust him to handle that, which was a good feeling.
...When we shot the film Jonathan added something to last scene, he added a confidence and hope to that last beat, which I’m really glad he did because it wraps the movie up really nicely—whereas I was perfectly prepared to end this movie totally depressing, like him just losing it at the end. But I’m glad Jonathan’s approach was really to put more confidence to it at the end.

'Homecoming' Season 2, Starring Janelle Monáe, is Solid but Can't Escape Season1's Shadow
The second season of Amazon's conspiracy thriller "Homecoming," which finds Janelle Monáe taking the reins from Julia Roberts, is solid but it should have been its own story rather than a continuation of what came before it.

At the end of the first season of "Homecoming," a psychological and conspiracy thriller series on Amazon starring Julia Roberts, Sam Esmail (creator of "Mr. Robot") left the door open enough so the show could continue for more. He expertly directed all 10 30-minute episodes, and purposefully didn't answer all questions that were asked throughout Season 1. Nearly two years later, "Homecoming," based on a popular podcast, returns for a second season, which hits Amazon Friday, with 7 half-hour episodes — except without its star and without its director. Taking the reins from Roberts is Janelle Monáe and filling in for Esmail is "The Stanford Prison Experiment" filmmaker Kyle Patrick Alvarez, who also has TV directing credits ("Tales of the City," "Counterpoint"). Season 2 starts in a daring way: Monáe's character wakes up in a small rowing boat in the middle of a lake. She's hurt and can't remember anything about her past or who she is. She sees a man in the distance run off and finds a military I.D. in her jacket pocket, suggesting her name is Jackie. Something's off and asking more questions only leads to more danger.
"Homecoming" Season 2 begins with a bang; almost like a writing prompt a teacher would ask their creative writing students... except it happens to star Monáe, who is excellent as always and it's nice to see her in a lead role instead of supporting. But as the show chugs forward, it enviably has to weave things from Season 1 with its new story, which feels awkward and lame at times. What could have been an interesting series, separate from Season 1, is poorly stitched together as a continuation of a complicated mystery. Alvarez is forced to connect the dots between the two seasons and he isn't always successful, especially as most of the cast does not return for Season 2. With Roberts (who played social worker Heidi) gone and Season 1 star Stephen James (who plays Walter, a young military vet with PTSD) only back in a small capacity, Alvarez has to rely on old Season 1 footage to move the story forward. But Hong Chau, who had a small role in Season 1 and has since given her incredible performance in "Watchmen" last year, is bumped up to a regular character in Season 2. Alverez smartly makes her an integral part of the story but that comes with a caveat: the more we learn about Chau's Audrey — an assistant-turned-exec at the Geist Group (a nefarious conglomerate that makes a number of different products) — the less interesting she becomes. As the season unfolds and lays out its mystery, much smaller this time around, "Homecoming" feels like a bad sequel, especially when we get to know the moralistic CEO of Geist, Leonard Geist (Chris Cooper), who appears to be a recluse and has no interest into the day-to-day operations of his company. (Joan Cusack also shows up as an official from the Department of Defense.) Without giving too much away, Jackie does find a connection to Geist but more specifically, Audrey. Nevertheless, audiences are smarter than ever before and Season 2 feels like a sequel of yesteryear — a cash grab of sorts completely missing its charm, its intelligence and the people — both in front of and behind the camera — that made it work to its fullest potential.
Despite that fumble, Alverez does keep many of the hallmarks Esmail injected into Season 1. There are still big winks and nods to Hitchcock; birds-eye-view shots of winding stairs and piercing string orchestra moments punctuate the most thrilling parts of Season 2. But even those overt homages feel stale and odd as Season 2 is less a conspiracy thriller and focuses on Monáe's Jackie; figuring out who she is and what's happened to her. At its best, "Homecoming" is an efficient story with a great cast. "Homecoming" podcast creators Micha Bloomberg and Eli Horowitz return to Season 2 as showrunners and also pen some of the episodes, which boosts the season. Alvarez does what he can with the tools he has and "Homecoming" ends up being an easy watch that is gripping enough, thanks to its short episode order and the half-hour runtime. Smartly, the season ends in a very interesting way that leaves room for a continuation but if there's no Season 3, fans will still be satisfied.
