Final Thoughts on Labyrinth of Touhou: Rebirth
Despite what I previously said, I ended up brute forcing the teleporter maze and finishing the game.
= = =
General Gameplay Overview
1F to 2F: It’s like LOT1, just with some differences. Grinding is easier, though you can’t grind on 2F immediately, there is no 1F secret boss, also, Kyouko is pretty dang hard for a 2F boss.
3F to 17F: Very, very easy. The dungeons are still huge, but the EXP and SP rates have increased, meaning it’s very, very easy to become over-leveled just by playing the game normally, and by becoming over-leveled, most of the game becomes a joke. Kyouko is also here to make the game even easier, since she lets you MAG buff quickly and easily long before you’re supposed to have Iku’s Stickleback buff.
18F to 20F: There’s a big, big difficulty bump at the end of 18F. Like, I’m not 100% sure, but I’m at least 90% sure that the end of 18F boss has had their stats adjusted to compensate for all the over-leveling before this point. Same with the final boss. It’s not clear if the mobs or other bosses were changed, but I’m very confident in the last two major story bosses having stat bumps.
The hardest boss in the game, bar none, is Shinki. Shinki is Rinnosuke’s replacement, and she is hard for completely wrong reasons because at any given point in a fight, she has a chance of using Devil’s Recitation, a group nuke that will absolutely destroy anyone without copious amounts of MYS resistance in the 300′s (and spoiler alert: there is no way you’re gonna build up that much MYS resistance for everyone in your party). The only way to win is to basically kill Shinki’s forms as fast possible (because a turn where Shinki has to change forms is a turn where she can’t use Devil’s Recitation)
(Note that despite being Rinnosuke’s replacement, I think Shinki’s stats are much higher than Rinnosuke’s at the same point in the base game)
If it weren’t for a certain, other equally broken attack (cough Mima cough) I think I would have actually quit at this point. There aspects of Shinki to admire (for example, the hacker knew and made the FIR phase the HARDEST phase now, instead of it being the easiest) but Shinki overall is just NOT balanced well
Final Thoughts on The New Characters:
Most of the new characters are less interesting than the characters they’re replacing, unfortunately. Some of the characters deserved to be remixed (Wriggle, Mokou, Cirno), but others had interesting strategies (like Rinnosuke with WSMR, Tenshi with Sword of Rapture, Komachi with her HP gimmick, Yuyuko with her ATB drain attacks) and were replaced with characters that offered no such substitute. Komachi’s absence is particularly painful when considering Shinki’s fight.
In short, there’s basically, there’s too many characters with “generic group buff”, “generic group heal” and “generic self-power up” skills and less interesting new stuff period.
Characters that turned out good:
Medicine: I know I’ve already sung my praises, but Medicine turned out to be a really fair character. She’s tanky as hell and has great crowd control, but also isn’t cripplingly strong as an attacker. I would LOVE a mod that is basically LOT1, but without Wriggle.
Mima: Mima is actually pretty great! I think she actually has a pretty compelling skillset, even if her skillset is literally just “Yukari but with a focus on offense instead of defense”. I will say that Twilight Spark is straight up broken (it’s too damn strong. Even bosses that are supposed to tank magical attacks get destroyed by that attack). Other than that, I think her gameplay design largely works; if she wasn’t stuck being the second to last character, I think she works in a way where you have to commit to either “offensive support” Mima or “direct nuke” Mima, and that’s pretty interesting design.
Characters that could be good (with adjustments)
Seija: At first, I felt she was a bit too strong. She has Tenshi’s great defenses, but not her rubbish HP. She has attack spells that are very broken on certain enemy types (specifically ones that have more DEF / MND than they have ATK / MAG) that also work against bosses that self-buff their defenses. And her support skills are way better in practice than in theory (since the debuffs aren’t guaranteed). Despite these strengths, she certainly didn’t make some of the newer, later game bosses any easier. So I reconsidered my position and came to the conclusion that “yes, she’s actually pretty solid”. She’d actually be in the “turned out really good” section except that I really, really think that Seija needs one thing to be perfect; her debuffs need to be absolute. You can currently resist her debuffs with enough Stat Drop Resistances, and I think it’d be better if you *couldn’t* resist them (like with Utsuho’s self-buffs). She’d be fully realized if she were a *true* Wildcard character with that one change (and it’d be more true to Seija too)
Yoshika: As a replacement for Yuyuko, she’s 100% less interesting as a character, but as a separate character, I feel Yoshika almost works. As she currently is, she’s a physical SPI attacker who can also self-heal if she gets into a pinch. This is a pretty narrow niche but LOT1 is definitely about characters with narrow niches. I think if she had either been given Komachi style HP, or if her attacks were tweaked (e.g. make her self-heal a vampire-style attack, and give her other elements to use), she could easily work within her own niche. As she is, though, she’s a bit too one-dimensional, even for LOT1′s standards.
Shou: The idea of giving up one of your slots to a character who offers ultimate support with no attacks is interesting. I personally just don’t think Shou goes far enough with her design. I think, conceptually, everything about her works, but if she had some big Hail Mary type move (maybe like a healer’s version of Rinnosuke, where Shou overheals the entire front row in exchange for all her SP) she’d be a truly unique character, rather than just being “Reimu on steroids”.
Characters that turned out okay:
Shinki, Kagerou, Momiji: All three of these characters have a very generic “use their self-buff, then go ham” strategy. Shinki has to be the most disappointing of these, as you’re going from Rinnosuke (who has WSMR strategies) to a strategy already covered by one of the post-game characters (Maribel) Of these, I think Kagerou might be the only improvement (LOT1 Mokou is just really not that compelling)... even then, Kagerou is just straight up “Chen who is slower, but also has better stats”
Characters I feel mixed on
Tewi: Putting aside the fact that I completely messed up her stat adjustments, I don’t think Tewi is interesting from a design perspective. As a remix, she actually isn’t that different from Rumia (though she targets DEF instead of MND, and has a different support skill). Her gimmick is “what if Grand Patriot’s Elixir affected the whole front row” and while she fulfills that role quite well, I question whether such design is actually balanced, or even fun.
Kyouko: I did say that Kyouko is way too strong for early Labyrinth of Touhou 1 and I honestly still think she breaks the early floors in a way the game clearly wasn’t designed for, but as her own separate character, removed from a hack that she’s obviously not supposed to be in, I’m not really sure what to make of her. I actually like her SIL healing gimmick (it came in very handy for the final boss). And she’s a very solid attacker with a MAG build (that she covers an element that’s not super common in LOT1 is a bonus). Despite all this, it’s hard to say how good she is because LOTR (and event LOT1) are not exactly lacking in characters characters like her. I only feel that she’s an improvement on Cirno... even then, she’s not a perfect replacement (I definitely started to miss Cirno’s SPD debuffs after a while).
Characters I didn’t get
Shinmyoumaru: I have NO IDEA how this character is supposed to work without skill formulas. My journey with Shinmyoumaru is using her to MND tank”, then realizing “oh no, her debuffs work for her physical stats only” to noticing “oh wait, she’s still a really good MND tank” and also “she can do solid damage even as a MND tank??” (I really, really need to see her skill formulas)
Wakasagihime: I tried to play her as a healer, and she ended up being a very, very mediocre healer. Maybe I had her stats in the wrong place and she’s secretly supposed to be a CLD nuke, but she basically had the same problem as Kyouko of “being overlooked by other, better characters”

All the announcements at Indie Live Expo 2020, a huge stream celebrating doujin games, featuring messages from Swery, ZUN, Toby Fox and more.
The Indie Live Expo 2020 live stream event was held on June 6, revealing a plethora of info on Doujin games and Japanese indie games. Here’s a list of all the announcements made during the stream.

Record of Lodoss War – Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth- Early Access Stage 2 Coming Late June
youtube
Team Ladybug announced on Indie Live Expo 2020 that the second stage of Record of Lodoss War – Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth- will launch in late June. A trailer showing the stage was published as well. Record of Lodoss War – Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth- launched in early access on March 12, 2020. As of now it only has a single stage, so it really is an early access. Stage 2 will include Efreet and Ylk as mid-bosses. The developers promises more content to come soon. You can read much more on this Metroidvania featuring Deedlit from Ryo Mizuno’s Lodoss novels with our past coverage here and here.
Online Multiplayer, Open-world, Survival Action game Craftopia Announced on Steam, with Early Access This July
[How to Join Closed Alpha Test of Craftopia]
1. Add Craftopia to wishlist in https://t.co/4jHzMqKuqV
2. Follow @PocketpairGames and RT this tweet

— Pocketpair – Craftopia (@PocketpairGames) June 6, 2020
Japanese indie devs Pocket Pair revealed its online multiplayer game Craftopia, and announced a Steam Early Access in July. Recruitment for a Closed Alpha Test also began.
Craftopia might look like Story of Seasons in 3D at a first glance, but it actually mixes Survival, Open-World, Crafting, Pokemon, and Online Multiplayer. Craftopia is also an hack ‘n’ slash, as you’ll craft your own equipment and learn skills to fight. You can make buildings and vehicles as well. The game promises a high degree of freedom, allowing you to do a lot of things that would lend you in jail in real life, such as building a giant machine to automatically boil livestock for food, or hunting elephants.
Craftopia looks like tons of fun and is definitely a game I’ll keep an eye on. The official site promises “endless possibilities”. If you can create a whole automated society complete with state racism and cops characters who assassinate innocents with impunity, I’ll buy this in a heartbeat.
Nimbus Infinity Announced on PC via Steam and Consoles (Release Date TBA)
youtube
GameTomo and GameCrafterTeam announced Nimbus Infinity, the sequel to high-speed mecha action game Project Nimbus. Nimbus Infinity will feature skill-based combat, diverse battlefields from asteroid belts to deserts, and customizable mecha & weapons. You can read more on the game on its official site. It’s interesting to note Nimbus Infinity was announced for PC via Steam and “consoles”, so perhaps it could come to Xbox Series X and PS5.
Sumire Announced for PC via Steam, Nintendo Switch (Release Date TBA)
youtube
GameTomo revealed a brand new narrative-driven game, Sumire no Sora. it’s definitely one of the game that piqued my interest the most during the Indie Live Expo 2020 stream, so I detailed what we know about the game via a dedicated article.
Picontier, Coming to PC and Switch, Gets New Gameplay (Release Date TBA)
『ピコンティア』の最新映像が公開されました!でもこれは、まだほんの一部です!完成までもう少しお時間をください…!#ピコンティア #Picontier #gamedev pic.twitter.com/bGDtTuCnGm
— ユウラボ@Skipmore (@skipmore) June 6, 2020
Developed by Skipmore (Fairune, Kamiko) Picontier is a slow-paced garden raising game with cute pixel art. You can also fish and fight monsters. It’s similar to Bokujou Monogatari (Story of Seasons) and its spinoff Rune Factory. They showed around 5 minutes of gameplay on the Indie Live Expo stream. Watch it at the 54:03 timestamp. The game’s developer asked us on Twitter to please wait a bit more till release. They’re also working on another game called Transiruby.
Touhou Fan Game Gensokyo Night Festival on Steam Gets Major Content Update Coming Soon
youtube
Tea_Basira announced during Indie Live Expo 2020 that its 2D scrolling action Touhou game, Gensokyo Night Festival, will get a new update soon. Similarly to Deedlit in Wonderland, the game is in early access. The update will add the game’s second stage, which has Utsuho Reiuji aka Okuu as boss, one of my favorite 2hues.
Chinese Parents, Already Available in English, Will Now Launch in Japanese
Chinese Parents is a pretty interesting sounding game. It’s a raising simulation where you live as a Chinese kid born in an average family, from their very early days of life up to the end of high school when they turn 18 years old. You decide how to spend your time, having fun, studying, learning skills, etc. It’s pretty much Princess Maker but with Chinese Parents. I’d definitely like to try it one day.
Children of Morta, Already Available in the West, was Finally Announced for our Japanese Peers on PS4, Switch
Children of Morta is an indie-action RPG available in the West on PS4 and Switch. Developed by Dead Mage, Children of Morta‘s story driven experience will hopefully become a hit in Japan. No release estimate for the Japanese version was announced yet, but hopefully the wait won’t be much longer. You can read our review of Children of Morta here.
The Indie Live Expo 2020 stream is embedded below. You have the English version and the Japanese version. Smaller announcements were also made, like new ports of existing games. Multiple already revealed or released games were featured for exposure too, such as Gnosia and Alter Ego S. If you’re interested, watch the Indie Waves Part 1,2,3 at the 1:15:56, 2:05:45, and 3:24:27 marks. The event also featured messages from popular Japanese developers:
ZUN (Touhou Project)
Toby Fox (“UNDERTALE”, “DELTARUNE”)
SWERY (CEO for White Owls Inc. ) (1:30:58)
Kazuya Nino (TYPE-MOON studio BB) (3:58:18)
Shuhei Yoshida(Head of Indies Initiative Sony Interactive Entertainment)
Jenova Chen(Co-Founder and Creative Director of thatgamecompany)
ZUN appears on stream at the 4:00:24 mark. He waited in the next room for like 6 hours, watching the stream unfold. Toby Fox’s heartwarming message follows soon after. You can watch Toby Fox’ message by itself here, but it isn’t as poignant without the comments from ZUN.

BB’s Games Of 2019
2019 as a year felt like it lasted two years, and a lot happened in my personal life. Got a new job, learned to drive, got my first car, moved out of the in-laws’ basement into our first real apartment, started my first long-term game of DnD (which in itself has involved a new relationship and an emotional breakdown)- and between it all I somehow managed to play 77 games. Backlog’s down to 35 titles, lads- at this rate, I’ll be down to zero by July 2020. (Not gonna happen.) In 2020, I’d like to explore the SNES catalogue a little more, but before that happens we have to review everything 2019 brought me, in a somewhat chronological order.
- Near A Tomato Carry-over from last year’s post since I was in the middle of playing it at the time. I definitely never quite got a handle on the combat and I think some of the themes went over my head, but I still had fun here, and the 9S hacking minigame never got old. It was a gift from an old friend who I miss. Was nice to reconnect. - SSBU With my new main Zelda, I cleared all of WoL and got every spirit on the Spirit Board. I never really used her before but she’s cute now! Really liked the attention to detail in the spirit encounters. Unfortunately, Cloud is still in the game. - Mega Mans 1 2 and 3 I actually spoke about my experiences with the Mega Men in my BBLC post for Mega Man Eggs, so you should read that right now. - Metroid Samus Returns It’s Good. Like, a solid Good. Never Great, never Bad, just Good. It’s nice to see one of the least accessible games in the series get a remaster, but it feels very disposable, if that makes sense. Like they just needed a Metroid to keep people busy while they reboot Prime 4 development. AM2R is vastly superior, go play that. One point of amusement- the game tells its story without narration, and also seems to pre-suppose you know Metroid lore. I was entertained by the thought of a newcomer to the series being completely mystified by the sudden space-dragon that comes out of nowhere to wreck you at the end of the game. - Khimera: Destroy All Monster Girls You can click here to download it, ‘cos it’s free, which is almost criminal. This is one of the higher tier games I’ve played this year. A little bit Mega Man, a bit Metroid, with hints of Touhou and Undertale, it’s pretty tough at times but never to ‘precision platformer’ levels. It’s a lot of fun and the dev deserves your support. - Steve And Ollie RPG Oh, I made this one. Making something else next year? Question mark? - Prof Layton 3 Feels like these are getting weaker as they go along. The story has always been absolute boohockey, but the puzzles feel like they’re degrading in quality too. With over 200 in each game, that’s not super surprising, and I’m glad they didn’t bulk it out with a load of the awful block-slider puzzles. Still, it’s Layton, if you liked any of the other games you’ll like this cos it’s the exact same thing. - Fault Milestone Two Yo, there ain’t a damned thing I can say about Fault, so go play the first one and then play this and you’ll understand. - Full Throttle I never bothered to finish it. The obtuse old Sierra puzzlers were hard enough to deal with back in the day, and just feel kind of inexcusable now. I don’t have the patience for it. - eXceed 3rd Slick and fun bullet hell with a nigh-incomprehensible story and great music. Touhou fans will like it. Music by SSH who is relatively well known in doujin circles. - ASAMU Finished it before writing my BBLC post! - Eternal Senia Everything I said in my post rings true- do your best to look past the wonky translation, because there’s a heartfelt story underneath it. Very accessible gameplay, by design. - Inivisble Inc You have never before been, nor will you ever again be, so aware of having left a door open. I fully expected to hate Invisible, but I got hooked pretty hard. Quite tempted to do another run of it once the backlog is clear. - Pyre GOTY. Supergiant’s best game so far, and that’s not an easy thing to say for this Bastion veteran. I sobbed by the end. I’m not being dramatic- literally sobbed. Please play it. Music and writing and, just, heart, are all top tier. All the Nightwings are the best, but Hedwyn is the best best. - Ellipsis Finished it before writing my BBLC post! - Just Cause 2 I found myself getting bored very quickly. The main missions are all identical (really, they are) and the side missions are very uninspired. Blitzing around in a jet or grappling around a mission target is a lot of fun but it feels very shallow. There’s a lot to do but not really any reason to do any of it. I dunno, it’s a kind of hollow experience, that I nonetheless had fun with. - LiEat It went over my head a little, but that’s more on me I think. These horror-esque, eccentric japanese RPG Maker games usually do. But, it’s neat, and short. If this sort of thing usually sticks on you, I think this is a good title. - Shantae Pirates Curse These games always felt non-essential to me; I’m not sure why they never stuck. They never really go below or above Good. Entirely enjoyable but I don’t feel like I’d have really missed anything if I hadn’t played them. It is, however, absolutely worth investing in for the utterly superb sprite work. That doesn’t sell a game by itself, I know, but Shantae is a pixel art masterclass. - FF5 I’d more or less finished it by the time I wrote my BBLC post, so I don’t have much to add. It’s a refreshingly goofy entry in a series known for taking itself too seriously, even compared to its predecessor. Look forward to my entry for this game in my Games Of 2020 post, having played the Four Job Fiesta! - Touhou 17 It’s mid-tier in the touhou hierarchy, IMO. Didn’t set my soul alight but I did enjoy it. Playing as Wolf Marisa makes the final boss too chaotic to really enjoy, but playing through again with Reimu made it more fun. I beat Extra on my third run through, which gave me false confidence that after 10 years I might actually be good at these games- to then be quickly humbled by attempting Th11’s Extra. Final Boss’ theme song has one of the greatest lead-ins of all time, especially given you start the fight by running away from her! Also really loved the Stage 4 theme as you barrel head-first into Hell (the real one this time), and the haunting, calm-before-the-storm serenity of Stage 5, overlooking the City Of Beasts. - HackNet + Labyrinths GOTY. (Yes, I know I already said Pyre was GOTY; it’s my post, I can have two GOTYs. Make your own damned post!) It’s hard to say what I loved about these games without spoiling too much- just know that they play very much like investigation games, and figuring out the puzzles feels great. Labyrinths technically takes place during the events of Hacknet, with a somewhat more Black Hat approach to things- despite this, play all of Hacknet first, and then play Labyrinths. The expansion introduces a lot of new stuff and much trickier challenges, such that going back to the base game afterwards to finish that would leave it a little hollow- a disservice to how great the ending is. - Mega Man X I said everything I wanted to say in my BBLC post, and anything I didn’t cover was better said by Egoraptor. - Octodad Finished it before my BBLC post! - Chroma Squad The final mission is disappointingly poor, but everything up to that point was pretty good. Huge variance and creativity in the bosses. However, the most fun I got from it was when I realised the game allowed me to customise my team name, transformation name, and other such terminology. Dave, Dayve, Davy, Davina, and Dehve shouting “It’s time to Chromatise, Chroma Squad!” very quickly became “It’s time to shit, you bunch of fucks!” and it was funny every single time. (Personal favourite bit of dialogue- “I tried to shit! It worked!”) - Pyrite Heart Finished it before my BBLC post! - Starfox 2 Finished it before my BBLC post! - Burly Men At Sea Finished it before my BBLC post! - Disc Room Finished it before my BBLC post! - Kokurase Finished it before my BBLC post! Should have broken these ones up a bit! - Metroid Rogue Dawn Very, very impressive romhack let down by a distinctly un-fun final section. They managed to fix so many of OG Metroid’s problems, I’m surprised the gauntlet of terribleness that is Tourian escaped with only a cosmetic change. Nonetheless, it’s free, and the other 95% of the game is superb, even from a purely technical standpoint. - Wuppo I dunno what happened here! I was full of praise for Wuppo when I played it, but somehow I just couldn’t stick with it and just never felt like playing it. It’s a very aimless game, and I wonder if that might be why? It’s a shame, I feel disappointed in myself for not seeing it through, but ultimately I play games to have fun and I just wasn’t quite there with Wuppo. - Super Mario Odyssey I loved it, obviously. I wrote my BBLC post towards the end of my time with Odyssey so most of that stands- I do want to add that the controls always felt a little loose, like I wasn’t quite as in-control as I was in Galaxy. Also Mario prioritises walljumping over ledge-grabbing and it’s super-hard to unlearn that instinct after 20 years. Finally- Long Journey’s End is just bullshit. - Secret Of Mana Dropped it pretty soon after Finning it. There’s some logic to the way the game works, some kind of hidden turn-order system, that I could not at all figure out. My AI companions (useless, btw) would hit an enemy which meant I couldn’t, except sometimes the hit would still register but only actually go through 3 seconds later, without any way to tell which way it was going to go. It takes like 7 months for your character to get back up after taking a hit. It’s just, wonky, and I couldn’t solve the puzzle of how to make the game do what I wanted to do. - Pokemon Shield Still working my way through it. It’s- yeah, it’s pokemon. Get a similar vibe to Sun/Moon with it that it’s kind of unfinished- lots of small (and some not so small) parts of the game just feel like there were bigger plans that couldn’t be realised in time. I’m still enjoying it! They did a great job of making the gym battles, and the whole process of 8-badges-then-champion, feel like a spectacle. I think only the anime has managed it to this degree before. - Earthbound Man, I really, really want to like this game, but the battle system is terrible. I need to play through the game again buffing my party up with cheats or something, because it’s so unbalanced and cheap. Everything else about the game is wonderful, but I got so frustrated with the fights! - Mario Kart 8 Didn’t play any of the single player this time, it was midgi’s christmas present so I just joined a couple of multiplayer games. Absolutely baffled that the game features F-Zero style anti-gravity courses, has Mute City and Big Blue, and even has the Blue Falcon as a selectable vehicle, but they haven’t put Captain Falcon in it. Like he’s ever going to get another game of his own? Let him have this! - Carmageddon 2 It’s pretty clunky by now, being 20 years old, but still plays well enough. The physics are super loose so you slide around like your tires have been buttered. It was more fun when they were zombies instead of just normal people. Missions are brutally hard and should be skipped with cheats. - Neopets After 15 years of playing, I finally got a Ghostkersword. The site as a whole has gone through a lot, and certainly its heyday is long gone, but there’s no other game quite like it. I’m playing the Food Club every day, still. - SIF New phone can’t run the actual gameplay section well enough, so I just log in occasionally to grab free scouts. Here’s another one whose golden years are behind it, sadly, but I certainly still have a lot of affection for SIF. - FF1 Mobile version, which fixes a lot of the bugs with the NES original. This year I completed a solo run with 1 Red Mage, a 4-black belts run, a low-level run, and a 4 White Mages run (which ended up being a lower-level run than the low-level run). I’m fairly comfortable in calling myself an expert in FF1, now. There’s still not really any other games like it- build a party as balanced or imbalanced as you like, and see how they fare. I’d like to build my own game in a similar style, one day. - Re: Live Gacha games and RPG just don’t mix! Both gacha and events do not gel with core RPG mechanics of your character(s) developing in strength as the game goes. It seems impossible to balance the game well- do you cater to the whales who spend and spend until they have the strongest teams possible, meaning the free players or the terminally unlucky can’t stand a chance, or do you cater to those players and give them no reason to spend for the more powerful characters? It’s a shame, because the anime was baffling but in that enjoyable way where you just kind of go with whatever it throws at you, and exploring that in a non-freemium game with a solid beginning middle and end would be really interesting. - Tiny Thief Mobile game that’s not available any more, I think my BBLC post covered it well enough. - F-Zero One of the criticisms most commonly levied against F-Zero is that it wont hold your attention for long. While that’s true, it’s not like you have to make a purchasing decision about it any more- it comes bundled in with the other games you’re buying, so the only investment is time. Ignoring that, it’s still fun to burn around the tracks, and the sense of speed hasn’t ever diminished. The music, too, is underappreciated, with Port Town being my personal fave. - F-Zero GX I can’t believe Nintendo hasn’t done anything with this ridiculous universe for 15 years now. The cutscenes are so hilariously overwrought, and the cast of characters is huge! It could so seamlessly intersect with the Starfox universe, too. There were rumours of a Starfox Racing title some time ago, and I really hope that’s the case. It’d work so well (by which I mean, a particularly enjoyable kind of awful). Anyway, the game still plays great, Story Mode is WAY too hard, Dr Stewart’s theme is a Tune. - Stratosphere This game is from 1998! Build a flying fortress, deck it out with fortifications and weapons and power supplies, then use it to destroy other fortresses. I only ever played the demo as a kid, never got the full game. Took some cajoling to get it to work on modern hardware, but eventually I got in and it wasn’t worth it at all. Wow, that performance, apparently it was designed to run at a terrible frame rate and it wasn’t just a result of my 1998 PC not being up to the task! A shame, but I guess it put one of my ghosts to rest. - DKC 2 The best of the three SNES games, despite the inclusion (and protagonism) of Diddy Kong. Lots to love here, but the OST is top notch. - DKC 3 Not as good as 2, but IMO better than 1. There was a much heavier emphasis on gimmick levels in 3, not all of which hit their target, but does provide a great deal of variety. Consensus is that 2 is better, but if someone claimed 3 was the best DKC, I’d let them get away with it. - King Arthur’s World (SNES) Speaking of putting ghosts to rest… We somehow always managed to get this game whenever we got a SNES, and kid!Beebs most certainly didn’t have the patience for it. Adult!Beebs barely does, either. It’s a very ambitious attempt at some sort of RTS/Puzzle hybrid, somewhat comparable to Lemmings? King Arthur must make his way from his starting position to the throne elsewhere in the map to claim it as his own, using the myriad abilities of his soldiers to get him there in one piece. I decided this year that I was finally going to play through the whole damn thing, start to finish, for the first time ever. With copious use of save states and rewinds, I was finally able to slay this demon. For as fiddly and frustrating as it is, I would still say people should check it out if they have the tools to do so- there’s not really anything else like it, on SNES or otherwise; you’re guaranteed a unique experience, if nothing else. - Oscar (SNES) Terrible. - Spanky’s Quest (SNES) With a name like that, how could I refuse? It’s a weird little puzzler, aping (wahey!) Bubble Bobble and Parasol Stars a little. You’re a monkey who can blow bubbles that stun enemies, but if you bounce the bubble on your head it gets progressively larger and can be burst to send a barrage of similarly-sized sports balls at your opponents to knock them out. You know, just like real life. - Addam’s Family (SNES) This easily-dismissible movie tie-in is actually a very competent platformer with some very, very light metroidvania exploration involved. Gomez has to go through Addams Mansion and rescue the members of his family who have been kidnapped by… something. There’s hidden secrets everywhere and the family can be rescued in any order you like. Genuine recommendation. - Panel DePon/Tetris Attack The only vs puzzler I enjoy (yep. Not even puyo puyo. I know.) I played the HECK out of this in my teenage years, and got crazy good at it. Tendonitis says I’m not allowed to do that any more, but once I shook the rust off I was still pretty strong! It was released as Panel DePon in Japan and was fairy themed, but for the western release they replaced all the fairies with Yoshi characters and renamed it Tetris Attack despite having nothing to do with Tetris at all. Up to you which you prefer- language isn't too much of a barrier here. Soundtrack is killer. - Subsurface Circular Finished it before my BBLC post. Still not decided if I liked the way it ended. - Master Of Orion 2 C’mon. After playing three other pretenders to MoO2’s throne, I had to give the real deal a couple of spins too. It’s Civ 5 in space. Customisable race builds. A whole galaxy to bring peace to, by whichever means you prefer. Would love for someone else to get into it. - Touhou 8 Last minute entry I just played yesterday ‘cos I wanted some Touhou and I haven’t played this entry in a long while. A Solo Marisa Normal Final B run, if you’re interested. Kaguya beast-mode tearing apart the Spell Of Imperishable Night at the end of the game is still an awesome moment, but it’s a shame you can miss the last couple of spells if you take some unlucky hits. - And here’s the list of Bins, which are all covered in their BBLC post: No Time To Explain MoO Skyborn Jumpjet Rex StH 4 Ballistick Munch’s Oddysee Outland Project CARS RiME Magicka Waking Mars Urban Chaos Divinity: Dragon Commander Strike Suit Zero Hell Yeah! Lambda Wars Beta Stranger’s Wrath MoO 3 XCOM Lots more Fins than Bins this year! Good to see!

Lost in Space 05
Hello, Isolans! We have conducted an activity check for the month of November!
If your character isn’t on this list, make sure to check this page to see how many stars that character has earned this month! Stars can be used for purchases at the marketplace.
The blogs that were removed from the Isola Radiale masterlist are under the cut. Note that both blogs with broken links and deactivated accounts will be included both at the top of this list and in their proper categories.
If you were removed in error, please simply send a re-application message. Several different people work on the activity checks, so it’s possible there are mistakes! If this happens to you, you will be able to keep everything you previously had, you just may be placed in a different residence.
Our general activity rules regarding checks are as follows:
Make at least three in-character posts during a calendar month.
Only one drabble and/or meme response of 300+ words counts as activity.
One-liners or minis not tagged #isola mini also do not count.
Please Note: If you are removed during two consecutive activity checks, you will not be allowed to re-apply as that character for two calendar months.
Additionally, anyone removed during the activity check will have a 12-hour window from the time of posting to re-claim their character. Any character not reclaimed during that period will be open to the community at large.

Thoughts and Stuff on Labyrinth of Touhou 1: Rebirth
Even though I’ve only gotten to 17F, I’ve had my fill of this hack
tl;dr: the increased EXP completely kills the game’s difficulty
= = =
Here’s a brief summary of how I felt about the hack:
What’s Good
The game revamps the story a little, which is nice
The game revamps the graphics each floor which is a nice surprise
Some of the worst parts of LOT1 (like the 6F teleporter maze) are gone
Some of the new / remixed characters are quite good, like Medicine, who I think is so much better than Wriggle.
The game is less grindy as a whole thanks to the increased EXP
What’s Bad
...but the game is ridiculously easy now thanks to the increased EXP. Seriously, I compared my LOT1 save vs Rebirth save, and I already have characters in the 90′s / 100′s at the point where you’d normally be late 60s, early 70s.
Some of the worst parts of LOT1 remain. The 14F maze is still here, there’s a NEW teleporter maze on 17F, 15F is 100% worse etc.
The rest of the new / remixed characters aren’t as well designed or balanced. Kyouko basically turns early game LOT into a joke. Seija is as tanky as Tenshi, but with actually decent health and offensive capabilities.
Unclear descriptions of what new character skills do
You have to level up one level at a time. No seriously. It turns out older versions of LoT did not have the “level up multiple times” function that later versions did. So on Rebirth, you pick up a new character and then you spend the next five minutes mashing Z and down to level up and allot bonuses.
The New Characters
Kyouko: she’s busted in the early game. She destroys most early game random encounters if she’s built with MAG. Even if she isn’t, her MAG buff allows you to steamroll bosses with MAG-build Patchouli. Her usefulness as a trash mob killer has started to peter out, but it’s nuts how much she trivializes the early game. I’d say she’s easily an improvement on Cirno, who was kinda trash, especially in the post-game where Mystia exists and does the same thing she does, but better.
Boss Fight: Her fight is the hardest new fight in LOT: Rebirth (that’s also actually fair). Part of it is that you’re not horrendously over-leveled when you fight her. The other part of it is that she’s actually just that hard; she has a post-game style berserk phase when her health gets low enough.
Build Used: MAG
Wakasagihime: honestly, I didn’t use her all that much. I started to use her towards the end because of her MAG / MND buff but that’s it. Despite having a group heal, she doesn’t hold a candle to Minoriko, especially when it comes to pure surviveability
Boss Fight: she is recruited without a fight
Build Used: MND
Tewi: another character I didn’t use much, though this was partly my fault; I assumed that she was an ATK reliant character, but then I read her spell description and now it seems like she’s a MAG attacker (that simply targets DEF, like Alice). I ruined her, but I can’t see her being worse than Rumia, as she actually has a group targeting version of Reisen’s Grand Patriot Elixir skill.
Boss Fight: Oh god, Boss Tewi is just pure RNG. Either she goes full stupid and spams her self-buff five times in a row without doing anything, or she just destroys your party with her high power, low delay attacks.
Build Used: ATK
Medicine: like I said before, Medicine is great. She’s basically Wriggle’s replacement, except unlike Wriggle, she can actually tank really well (MND-Tank Medicine is excellent) and she has more utility, choosing between group PSN, group PAR, or a group PSN-cure (that has 99 delay, meaning you can do some character switching shenanigans with her).
Boss Fight: she is recruited without a fight, but you do fight Plants in place of Wriggle’s Peg Insects.
Build Used: MND
Seija: despite replacing Iku on the screen, she’s actually a Tenshi clone. Personally, I think Seija is just busted. Yeah she can’t self-buff like Tenshi, but her better HP stat, her ability to buff OTHER characters as well and her gimmicky attack spells (which will overkill anything with higher DEF or MND than ATK or MAG) make her way more useful than Tenshi.
Boss Fight: she is recruited without a fight
Build Used: Balanced Mix of DEF and MND
Momiji: she is Komachi’s replacement but plays absolutely nothing like her (no character plays like Komachi, actually, which is a huge bummer). I honestly didn’t really use her. I built her up with ATK but I didn’t feel she was a very good attacker. With her skills (which include a self-buff that restores health), Momiji might honestly be a better tank.
Boss Fight: she is recruited without a fight, but you do fight Tengu in place of the Komachi’s Spirits
Build Used: ATK
Shou: she is Sanae’s replacement except she has zero attack skills (which was a big problem for me, I dumped all her bonuses into MAG). No opinion on her tbh.
Boss Fight: You fight a Shou / Sanae’s foe but she has no personal boss fight.
Build Used: MAG (don’t do this)
Shimyoumaru: she is Tenshi’s replacement... and that’s all I got. She was one of the last characters I picked up before dropping the game, so no clue how she works. A thread on MotK implies that she’s probably the worst of the new / remixed chracters so...
Boss Fight: she has a boss fight. I remember nothing about it because I was in the “horrendously over-leveled” part of my playthrough.
Build Used: Erm, didn’t know what stat she used
Kagerou: she is Mokou’s replacement but plays like a Chen remix (but Chen is already in the game...). I will say, I don’t like Mokou in LOT1 but what little I played of Kagerou, it seems she’s really good.
Boss Fight: she has a boss fight. I also remember very little about the fight, but I actually almost lost (unlike some other fights) so it’s probably harder than the others.
Build Used: ATK
Yoshika: she is Yuyuko’s replacement but she plays completely differently. The only thing in common with Yoshika and Yuyuko is their SPI element and their slow SPD. Yoshika has nothing fancy like Yuyuko (to my knowledge, she has no ATB drain or any group attacks, and all three of her attack animations are based on Remilia’s Gungnir animation) but her damage is ridiculous against certain enemies. She could also possibly work as a tank, given that she has a self-heal?
Boss Fight: she easily has the easiest new boss fight. Yuyuko in LOT1 wasn’t particularly hard (so long as you had DTH and SPI protection, she couldn’t really do anything to you) but Yoshika is a complete joke by comparison.
Build Used: ATK
Mima: she is Yukari’s replacement, and she seems kinda nuts? Compared to Yukari who is basically Support Queen, Mima is a Juggernaut Attacker whose version of Spiriting Away even buffs characters. I didn’t experiment much with her, and I wouldn’t put her as *better* than Yukari, but she sure is different.
Boss Fight: She actually forced me to redo my team setup... I still beat her on the third try though. She still has Yukari’s multiple phases but I can’t go more in-depth than that.
Build Used: MAG
Shinki: I refuse to to do teleporter mazes without a guide, so the run ends here.
In all, this was a fun diversion. I’ll probably write up a short walkthrough for some of these floors and put them SOMEWHERE. Sorry but I’m just not interested in doing teleporter mazes blind.

Started on Labyrinth of Touhou Rebirth
I finally started on that LOT1 hack I mentioned a while back (on my main blog)
First off, yes it’s a hack, but it’s more of a remix of LOT1 rather than a totally new game. The person who created the hack wasn’t able to actually change events or cutscenes or anything of the sort. They were able to change other stuff, like the text in the cutscenes, as well as stuff like the floor layouts (for example, in base LOT1, you could skip straight to Floor 2 if you knew the route while in LOT: Rebirth, Meiling blocks the critical path to get to Floor 2) and some characters (e.g. Medicine is a remix of Wriggle who, instead of having 2 PSN spells and 1 NTR spell, instead has a 1 PAR spell, 1 PSN spell and 1 PSN recovery spell). But structurally it’s the same game overall.
The resulting game is... a lot easier than LOT1 in most regards.
The first main issue is that some of the new characters are just too strong. Kyouko, who is a remix of Cirno, is so, so, so much stronger than Cirno ever was. Every floor since I’ve had unlocked her, I’ve been able to wipe the floor with trash mobs. Boss fights are also mostly easy now as Kyouko is also able to increase MAG of the entire party (except for the base version of Marisa, who can use Concentrate, you don’t get anything comparable to this until Iku... who is still not as good as Kyouko is).
The result is that I’m basically breezing through this game. Things might change down the line but so far, the early usual gatekeepers of LOT1 (like Youmu on 2F and Alice on 4F) have not put up a challenge.
It hasn’t been completely free, two bosses actually have given me trouble... and those two bosses also happen to be the “new” bosses. Kyouko and Tewi, who are the equivalent of Cirno and Rumia in the base game, are so, so, so much harder than their original counterparts.
Kyouko isn’t too different from Cirno... until you get her health low enough and she starts spamming a desperation move (which hurts the whole party with MAG, and also has very, very low delay). She’s much harder than Youmu and really, anything else at that point of the game (enemies with “berserk DM’s” only start to be a thing towards the end of the game).
Tewi, by contrast, is kind of a disaster as a fight. Compared to Rumia, who uses MAG and targets MND, Tewi uses... something (not sure if it’s an Alice style MAG vs. DEF or ATK vs. DEF) and whether you win or lose the fight is really up to the AI. If the AI is really mean, it’ll spam the group hitting spell over and over and you won’t be able to do much bc at the point you fight her, you don’t have many physical tanks yet. If the AI is really dumb, however, it’ll just spam it’s self buff over and over (which it did in my case).
These two are outliers but the difficulty of each fight is concerning (basically, I’m not looking forward to other boss remixes).
There are other aspects of the game that are not shaping up as I thought they would. The game has a few other QOL changes, like increased EXP and SP and while I thought I’d like this change, the result is that since I’m grinding less and I’m getting way less equipment to play around with during bosses.
The game also lacks some QOL changes I didn’t know existed in the version of LOT1 I played. It turns out that base LOT1 had a lot that was different, namely, you couldn’t level up more than 1 level at a time, and that you also don’t have an “instant encounter” button.
The resulting experience is a lot different than I expected.
I’m still gonna soldier on, because I really like Labyrinth of Touhou 1, and I’ll take any excuse to play it again, but this hack is definitely not what I was expecting.

Publisher Phoenixx and developer Aqua Style will release Touhou Genso Wanderer: Lotus Labyrinth R for PlayStation 4 and Switch on September 30 worldwide, the companies announced. It will support English, Japanese, Traditional Chinese, and Simplified Chinese language options.
Touhou Genso Wanderer: Lotus Labyrinth R is available via Steam, but without English language support.
Here is an overview of the game, via PlayStation Store:
About
Venture into dungeons with a huge party of your favorite Touhou characters!
This is a dungeon-crawler RPG with an absurdly large party size! The dungeon-crawler RPG Genso Wanderer is now a game with an Oversized Party System that pushes the envelope of the roguelike genre!
Now you can bring dozens of partners with you on your dungeon crawls, in addition to other quality of life improvements that make the game’s systems and controls smoother than ever.
Overwhelm your enemies with strength in numbers!
Lead tons of your favorite Touhou characters at once and conquer the impregnable Lotus Labyrinth!
System
Oversized Party System – If you can’t hack it alone, bring the whole gang! Prior Genso Wanderer games restricted the player to exploring alone, or with a single partner, but no longer! This game lets you bring in tons of partners all at once. Bring in everybody you’ve recruited! Or just bring in the characters you like! Blaze your way through dungeons with the power of friendship and overwhelming numbers!
Oversized Party Formation System – Form teams and bring them all in to conquer dungeons! In addition to the usual main party led by the player, you can assign your partners to entire other teams with their own leaders, which can then act separately. You can create optimal party comps, or you can throw all that out the window and make gimmick teams like the Scarlet Devil Mansion Team, the Green Hair Team, the Little Sister Team, or whatever else you feel like!
Partner Skill System – Master various skills, share them with partners, and power them up! In this game, partner abilities grow stronger with Skill items. Raise your partners’ ranks and bring out their latent abilities! You can also assign skills by team! Customize and set skills to suit your own style of play!
Mega Variety Equipment System – Load up on tons of weapons and armor! In a departure from prior Genso Wanderer titles, you can now equip up to 10 separate weapons, 10 separate pieces of armor, and 10 separate charms, all at the same time! And this equipment strengthens more than just the player. All of your party members benefit from it! Select an equipment loadout that accounts for all of your partners’ traits and weaknesses, not just your main character’s!
