Scientists have chosen the second drilling site for the Curiosity rover on Mars.

Pasadena, California — The team operating NASA’s Curiosity Mars rover has selected a second target rock for drilling and sampling. The rover will set course to the drilling location in coming days.

This second drilling target, called “Cumberland,” lies about nine feet (2.75 meters) west of the rock where Curiosity’s drill first touched Martian stone in February. Curiosity took the first rock sample ever collected on Mars from that rock, called “John Klein.” The rover found evidence of an ancient environment favorable for microbial life. Both rocks are flat, with pale veins and a bumpy surface. They are embedded in a layer of rock on the floor of a shallow depression called “Yellowknife Bay.”

This second drilling is intended to confirm results from the first drilling, which indicated the chemistry of the first powdered sample from John Klein was much less oxidizing than that of a soil sample the rover scooped up before it began drilling.

“We know there is some cross-contamination from the previous sample each time,” said Dawn Sumner, a long-term planner for Curiosity’s science team at the University of California at Davis. “For the Cumberland sample, we expect to have most of that cross-contamination come from a similar rock, ra Vending Telemetry  ther than from very different soil.”

Although Cumberland and John Klein are very similar, Cumberland appears to have more of the erosion-resistant granules that cause the surface bumps. The bumps are concretions, or clumps of minerals, which formed when water soaked the rock long ago. Analysis of a sample containing m DIN-Rail router  ore material from these concretions could provide information about the variability within the rock layer that includes both John Klein and Cumberland.

Mission engineers at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, recently finished upgrading Curiosity’s operating software following a four-week break. The rover continued monitoring the Martian atmosphere during the break, but the team did not send any new commands because Mars and the sun were positioned in such a way the sun could have blocked or corrupted commands sent from Earth.

Curiosity is about nine months into a two-year prime mission since landing inside Gale Crater on Mars in August 2012. After the second rock drilling in Yellowknife Bay and a few ot ethernet switch  her investigations nearby, the rover will drive toward the base of Mount Sharp, a 3-mile-tall (5-kilometers) layered mountain inside the crater.

A new study on polygon-forming ridges on Mars examines the Medusae Fossae region straddling the planet’s equator and similar-looking networks in other regions of the Red Planet.

Thin, blade-like walls, some as tall as a 16-story building, dominate a previously undocumented network of intersecting ridges on Mars, found in images from NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter.

The simplest explanation for these impressive ridges is that lava flowed into pre-existing fractures in the ground and later resisted erosion better than material around IoT PLC access them.

“Finding these ridges in the Medusae Fossae region set me on a quest to find all the types of polygonal ridges on Mars,” said Laura Kerber of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, California, lead author of the survey report published this month in the journal Icarus.

The pattern is sometimes called boxwork ridges. Raised lines intersect as the outlines of multiple adjoining rectangles, pentagons, triangles or other polygons. Despite the similarity in shape, these networks differ in origin and vary in scale from inches to miles.

Small and Large Examples

Mars rover missions have found small versions they have been able to inspect up close. Some of these polygonal ridges, such as at “Garden City” seen  secure web based scada  by Curiosity, are veins deposited by mineral-laden groundwater moving through underground fissures, long before erosion exposed the veins. Curiosity recently also imaged small boxwork ridges that likely originated as mud cracks.

At the other end of the size scale, ridges outline several rectangles each more than a mile (more than 2 kilometers) wide at a location called “Inca City” near Mars’ south pole. These may have resulted from impact-related faults underground, with fractures filled by rising lava that hardened and was later exposed by erosion.

“Polygonal ridges can be formed in several different ways, and some of them are really key to understanding the history of early Mars,” Kerber said. “Many of these ridges are mineral veins, and mineral veins tell us that water was circulating underground.”

Examples of them found so far tend to be in the same areas as water-related clues such as minerals that form in hot springs, clay-mineral layers and channels carved by ancient streams. Volunteers Sought

Kerber is seeking help from the public through a citizen-science project using images of Mars from the Context Camera (CTX) on Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter.

“We’re asking for volunteers to search for more polygonal ridges,” she said. Finding as-yet-unidentified polygonal ridges in CTX images could improve understanding about their relationship to other features and also will help guide future observations with the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera to reveal details of the ridge networks.

This citizen-science program, called Planet Four: Ridges, began January 17 on a platform released by the Zooniverse, which hosts dozens of projects that enlist people worldwide to contribute to discoveries in fields ranging from astronomy to zoology. More information is at:p>

Other Zooniverse Mars projects using data from CTX and HiRISE have drawn participation from more than 150,000 volunteers.

On Earth, too, polygonal ridges have diverse origins. Examples include grand walls of lava that hardened underground then were exposed by erosion, and small ridge networks inside limestone caves, where erosion can be chemical as well as physical.

With CTX, HiRISE and four other instruments, the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter has been investigating Mars since 2006.

Apple's Revenue Slightly Below Wall St. Forecasts

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Apple Inc posted a smaller-than-expected 6 percent rise in quarterly revenue on Tuesday, after selling 35.2 million iPhones in an increasingly competitive smartphone market.

The company, which derives most of its business from the high-end mobile device, reported sales of $37.4 billion in its fiscal third quarter ended June, falling short of Wall Street's expectations for about $38 billion.

Gross margins were better than expected at 39.4 percent, up from 36.9 percent in the year-ago quarter, primarily due to cheaper product costs and strong sales of the Mac.

But iPad sales at 13.3 million fell a little short of analysts' projections for more than 14 million. The tablet has come under increasing pressure from cheaper Android rivals.

Whether Apple can again produce a revolutionary new product, something it has not done since the iPad in 2010, remains the central question in the minds of investors and Silicon Valley executives.

Many investors expect Apple to make a play for the wearable device market with a sensor-laden smart watch, dubbed iWatch. Analysts also expect the company to introduce two versions of its smartphone this fall, including a 5.5-inch model that thrusts Apple into the market for larger-sized phones that rival Samsung helped popularize.

Donald Rumsfeld, of All People, Built a Churchillian Mobile Gaming App

Former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld is back in the spotlight, but not for his involvement in leading the United States to the Iraq War, being the main subject of an Errol Morris film or being quizzed if he is a baby-eating lizard man. Rumsfeld has been quietly building a mobile game app over the past two years.

Well, not him, exactly. The 83-year-old Rumsfeld led a group of developers to create Churchill Solitaire—a more challenging form of solitaire allegedly invented by Winston Churchill. And as a lifelong Republican, Rumsfeld clearly idolized Churchill.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Rumsfeld peppered his developers with his trademark rapid-fire messages called snowflakes, urging them to indulge the game with Churchill references at every opportunity.

The game is ladened with World War II references, lionizing the leader of the United Kingdom during the war. The app opens with World War II video montage that includes Churchill—Wired says it’s a voice-over actor—giving a speech. The soundtrack is epic, a stark contrast with the generally calming game of solitaire.

Rumsfeld and his wife learned to play Churchill’s style of solitaire through a Belgian diplomat who learned the game directly from Churchill, according to a post he wrote on Medium. Rumsfeld, his family and a dozen other people were the only people in the world who knew Churchill Solitaire—until now.

“There was every chance the game Churchill so enjoyed could be lost to the ages,” Rumsfeld writes. “Then I was approached about turning this game into an ‘app.’ I can’t say I had much of an idea of what an app even was.”

Churchill Solitaire is played with two decks of cards, 10 piles on the playing table and eight foundational piles to arrange the decks back in its suit. (Normal solitaire is played with one deck, eight piles on the playing and four foundational piles.) It also has a special curveball called “The Devil’s Row” to add more known unknowns to the game.

Rumsfeld received permission from the Churchill estate for permission to use the prime minister’s name and images in the game. All profits—the game is free to play on iOS but will have to pay a dollar after you reach a certain level—will go to charity, according to Rumsfeld.

Newsweek could not reach Randolph Spencer-Churchill, the great-grandson who gave Rumsfeld his blessings, on the family’s thoughts on the now-released game. Newsweek did reach out to Churchill’s other progeny, Sir Nicholas Soames, for comment.

Rumsfeld used his new mobile gaming empire to go on television to talk about the current 2016 presidential elections. He spoke of Donald Trump “touch[ing] a nerve in our country” and dissed George W. Bush’s dad and former President George H.W. Bush (to whom Rumsfeld lost the vice presidential nomination at the 1980 Republican convention).
