Finally getting to INTRODUCTIONS in my language learning. 我叫陶爱君,我是二十八, 我是美国人。Need to learn a proper word for ‘nonbinary’ if they got somethin similar. At least ‘androgynous’.
Though it tried to teach me jiao without teaching me what it meant. Just introduced the word as part of a grammatical sentence without being like ‘here’s what it MEANS’ (it means call/called).
Wondering if ‘wo shi (name)’ would be grammatically correct. If shi is ‘is/am being’. Should be ‘I am (name)’. But perhaps it’s just a weird way of saying it. I can’t wait to learn grammar just so I can ignore grammar in the future. (Love talkin like someone who ignores structure).
Also. Got help with my Name in two places.
First Name Àijūn was helped via my old Chinese Culture and Asian Film Study teach from college. I considered Àidàn on my own, something like ‘lovely Dawn’, but my teacher suggested jūn instead, meaning something like ‘gentleman’. Lovely Gentleman. I really liked it! Very Gender!
The surname Táo came from XHS, because I wanted a full name. It means something like molded/cultivated. A cultivated gentleman! It’s very transgender of me. So I love it!
The Ài part of my name is my favorite to write though. Somethin tells me. That bottom part of the character that look like a folding table, could probably be stylized like a heart. 👀 Now I wanna try that. Pardon me.

Updates on Learning Mandarin Chinese 6/∞: 课本和可理解输入
Currently working my way through NPCR4 (just started the second chapter!) and balancing it off with some comprehensible input videos in Chinese.
I'm loving the fact that comprehensible input has become The Thing in language learning circles in the past couple of years, because it's caused a veritable explosion of comprehensible input videos on Youtube. I recently found out about Lazy Chinese - Comprehensible Input, and I'm really enjoying her videos!

Y'all I've been learning Mandarin for a few months now, and it was time for our teacher to give us Chinese names. The name she chose for me is 林晨 (lín chén). Now, that's a beautiful name, by both sound and meaning, and it fits me nicely, I'd say. But it has certain... Yikes implications when translated into English 😬
林 (last name) - forest, wood, jungle
晨 (first name) - morning, dawn
... Y'all, she literally named me morning wood 😭
It doesn't hold any dirty meaning in Mandarin, and my teacher's English isn't the best, so I'm sure this wasn't on purpose, but I find it hilarious regardless. It grew on me, I honestly love it, so I don't think I'll say anything about its implications to my teacher. Just thought I should share because it made me giggle like a twelve year old 😂

Best Mandarin Comprehensible Input channel on Youtube
This woman has some kind of magical power (aka she's an incredible teacher) ! Even when I don't look at the subtitles and don't know half the words she's using, I can still get a sense of what she's talking about and even understand words in context !! She's doing an incredible job so go check her channel out !

LOOKING TO LEARN MANDARIN AGAIN
I learned a little bit back in college. Now that I'm reading more webnovels and watching more cdramas, I want to learn again
Level: Ultra beginner (I know some terms and phrases. Can type them but can't read characters. Can speak and hear a little better. Grammar confuses me.) 我的名字ninja. 我的中文不好 LOL
Want: conversation partner/native or long time speaker to learn the language and culture. Would love to know internet/informal slang too! Would love if we were in the same fandoms!
DM me if interested!

Well, results of HSK1 out in two weeks. It felt piss-easy and it's going to be embarrassing if I get less than 100. Tbh going a state over for the test center feels like the hard part.
Yeah, that at-home option in Nov looks tempting. Might do HSK3 instead of 2 bc apparently you can skip levels. And I study daily, listen to rap during daily commutes, and have a good teacher.

Fellow sufferers of the Integrated Chinese textbooks might be interested to know that there are at present 14 works in the Integrated Chinese fandom on ao3:
Tumblr media
Four are gen, six are f/m, two are f/f and one is m/m.
Three are in English and the rest in Chinese.
In this one, which is even formatted like an Integrated Chinese dialogue, 李友 mistakenly tells 白英爱 that she's going to New York with her GIRLfriend, and preslash ensues!

Updates on Learning Mandarin Chinese 5/∞: 学习学习!
Last month, I read the book 《北京娃娃》 (2002; Beijing Doll) by 春树 (Chun Shu). Obviously, my Mandarin is nowhere near the level yet where I could read an entire book in Mandarin (although I AM planning to get there one day!), so I read it in Finnish translation. Not my new favourite book (perhaps I would have enjoyed it more back when I was a teenager), but an interesting depiction of turn of the millennium teen angst and rebellion all the same. Definitely made me want to read lots and lots more of Chinese lit in translation during the rest of the year to motivate me to keep studying.
In other news, I just started the 4th book in the New Practical Chinese Reader series 🎉 Full speed ahead!
