i think my personal favorite bit of standout fire emblem rng was when i was playing fire emblem echoes and on one of my first trips into duma tower i got the luna bow

Given that Heroes’ localization updated Kyza from Radiant Dawn as a non-binary character, I often think about how they are treated in Japanese Heroes and if it differs at all from their portrayal in the Japanese Radiant Dawn. I haven’t been able to find any concrete answers online, so I would greatly appreciate it if you could look into the matter.

In my conclusion and TLDR, Kyza is definitively portrayed the same in JP Heroes as they were in JP Radiant Dawn. 

I first checked Kyza’s JP “Meet some of the Heroes” entry on the official FE Heroes website (link here), and sure enough they are referred to by name repeatedly, and no pronouns are used. This is very common in Japanese. The most notable thing here is that they are described as having the heart of a maiden (乙女心, otomegokoro), but this word doesn’t describe a female character necessarily - it describes a pure heart/ love, like that of a teenage girl or young woman. Leon and his feelings for Valbar are also described in the same way in Echoes.

After that, I compared most of Kyza’s text in Radiant Dawn vs Heroes - not a hard thing to do when they are from one of the FE games with the least amount of development for each individual character. Their speaking is still the same - ‘standard polite’ Japanese when first talking to the Summoner, then once their casual side slips out, like in their lv. 40 convo with the Summoner, they use atashi as their ‘I’ pronoun, which is normally used only by girls/ women.

Using atashi as their ‘I’ pronoun is pretty damning evidence that some kind of gender fluidity is going on, but I knew there was something deeper I could probably find. I wanted to see if I could get an official source listing them as ‘male’ or ‘female’ outright.

In the end, I did not get an official source, even the Radiant Dawn art book does not list gender in the character bios. But the fan entry on @Wiki does list them as male, otoko specifically (link here). While the Wiki entry was originally written during the Radiant Dawn era, it was updated after Kyza was added to Heroes.

The Pegasus Knight Wiki also describes them using the kare male 3rd person pronoun, and as an ‘onee’ character (link here). This comes from the word for big sister, and is a trope describing a male character that uses feminine gendered language.

And that’s everything that I found! Considering that Japanese gendered language does not translate directly into English, I agree that writing Kyza to be non-binary was the most straightforward way to convey their gender fluidity. Especially when Kyza gets so little room for development on-screen.

FE Echoes, Act 3 (moving on)

So Alm's first battle in Act 3 was spectacularly bad, but don't worry! There's room for even more failure!

Moving onto Celica's side, we come across the Pegasus girls! ... Aw, we didn't get to recruit them. (Um. About that. Let me tell you-)

Clive and Kliff unlock some class upgrades, but the nearest shrine is in the Deliverance hideout, which sets us back several in-game days (and leads to a few armies spawning)

But look! My guy got some armor! (I forgot to take a picture of Clive's armor, but I soon learn that everyone gets the same armor anyway.)

Ugh, we have to take back Zofia Castle again... It's a bottleneck, which is good for the castle but bad for us. Pegasus girls aren't strong enough to fly ahead without getting ganged up on. Clair might have died. I forgot because I didn't complain about it.

I unlock some supports, and I make sure to ping people about it.

“You’re not taking things seriously.” “And?”

Tobin and Kliff's B support is "aw, do you need a hug?" (Pardon the sudden comparison, but if Es was in Kliff's place, they would kick somebody.)

Then we get this support from Clive and Lukas that basically goes: "Forsyth is all drive and emotion" "Forsyth would crawl into bed and never get out if he heard that" "That's true"

Green and Blue die in two separate battles.

Some things I learn by poking around:

Retreating lets you leave the battle (and keep the exp earned in Normal mode)

You can move people around in the battle phase.

Back to Celica's side...

I die all of a sudden. How???

The sword is cursed. (Art idea!)

Then I try giving Kamui the shadow sword instead, and he dies, so I rewind and decide we're not meant to use the sword.

First game over with Alm: Oh wait, I have this cool thing called a lightning sword. I should have used it. First game over with Celica: Ooh, I got a cool shadow sword. Wait- Never mind, I shouldn’t use it.

So then I unlock Leon's supports with Valbar and Kamui and quickly realize Leon is in love with Valbar.

There are multiple supports of one character gushing about a third party, but this one sticks out because Leon is telling Kamui that he could never compare.

We go visit a shrine, and then I realize we missed the village to the west. Let's go over-

Nope! An army is ganging up on Alm's team! And they gang up on Clair specifically and she dies! The woes of missing initiative.

So fine, I'll reload the game and make sure we get the initiative instead.

We bypass the army entirely and fight Desaix.

I have Faye and Clair fly around the side of the castle and into Mathilda's cell, which might have needlessly put them at risk, but at least they get to kill the Terrors that spawn.

Kliff got low on health, so Tobin stood guard while he tried to snipe one of the soldiers. Cute little drawing idea.

My friends called this the "average cantor map"

This is probably one of those climactic "stop there for the night" battles, but I decided to do just one more.

We have a protective little diamond going on. However, when I put Faye in the corner of one, that led to two soldiers ganging up on her, and she died, and I used the turnwheel.

Also, the funniest thing happened when everyone tried to gang up on Kliff and he killed them all.

I, uh, still didn't fully understand the turnwheel at the time, so Clair was the one who didn't get revived.

Hey! So I've heard a lot about your ROM hack, and I want to know if the rumors I've heard about more characters being queer is true. The TV Tropes page said Jesse was made trans which is metal as hell (tysm for that), but there's no way that was the only character made queer. I'm only on chapter 7 and there's no wiki, and I don't have time to play fire emblem at the moment, so can I get like the full list of queered-up characters or smth? Thanks!

(P.s. I think the ROM hack is interesting I'll have to see how it goes as I play more, whenever that happens, but it's been a neat experience so far)

Hi, thanks for the ask! Quite a few characters have new supports and/or endings with each other:

Acantha and Silque's support chain is romantic

Valbar is straight but is a close friend to Leon and they actually discuss what Leon's feelings mean for their friendship

Leon and Atlas's support chain is romantic

Kamui and Leon's support is a bit flirtier than the original

Nomah and Mycen used to be seeing each other ~30-40 years ago and can get back together with A support

Fernand's feelings for Clive are explicitly romantic and play a major role in his character arc

Clive has some repressed bisexuality he comes to terms with in light of his history with Fernand

Forsyth and Python have a bit more chemistry going on (beyond what they already did) but it's left open

Clive and Jesse are old friends and Jesse's backstory is revealed in their support

Silque and Faye's supports have been rewritten to touch more on Faye's feelings for Celica (this one's more just subtext)

What's your favorite non-canon pair and why?

i honestly don't think about shipping in echoes too much. is it baffling? maybe. but i've always been a bit fond of tobin x gray. it's silly. leon is canonically gay but if i remember correctly, valbar just considers him a friend. so that isn't really... canon. but i think they're really nice to think about. love might win one day!
