Elysée Wednesday on the Sunset Strip and a moment of absurdist humor. I organized this weekly gathering where Ferrari and Hollywood types primarily would gather coming from all over the world but you could also expect to encounter a touring concert pianist, a homeless ex-physicist formerly an associate professor at UCLA who did a stint at Area 51 or a Formula 1 driver who had (at the time) three world championship titles to his credit. On one evening, we had the three men most connected to the Ferrari Breadvan--the catalyst for its importation (Ed Niles), the first US owner and restorer (Gary Wales) and the notable owner who had the 'van during my ownership of GTO 3987 (Matthew Ettinger). These were evenings of the most fascinating, and often outrageous, story-telling about larger-than-life experiences. In terms of numbers, anywhere from four to forty would attend. As perfect as Caffe Primo was as a location with its informal patio dining where we could come and go, the owner lacked, shall we say, people skills and an awareness of public relations, customer relations and an understanding that a restaurant--however informal--is a hospitality business. He was driving away customers in droves to the point that he hired a sign-holder (no, not me) in the hopes of attracting more customers. All he needed to do was stay away which, for the most part, he did. When we had a light turn-out, I'd lead everyone down to my favorite French bistrot Le Petit Four where Alexandre understood the art of people and food. At some point after I moved to Ireland and EW was no more, Caffe Primo closed its doors. PENANG // ENCHANTE: Rose cheesecake, raspberry jelly, lychee; MYR20 from Le Petit Four, Lebuh Pantai, Penang. Swipe left for the video. Cafe interiors and cake display on @perthfoodmenu Asked the pastry chef and owner which was her favourite and she pointed to this particular cake. I must say I wasn’t disappointed. To be honest, having fancy cakes wasn’t a priority in Penang where there’s cheap local kuihs around. Recommended this place (thanks @luvkkyy !) and thought I’d check out Penang’s cafe scene along with Chinahouse which was just 400m away (you can do both at once if you’re in the area). At Le Petit Four, the French cakes are well-presented, done simply and excellent in quality. I love how clean the flavours were without there being too many components and a big plus when the cake is not too sweet. The cheesecake was very smooth and there was the fragrant rose, raspberry and lychee flavours. Love the crumbly base. In response to John @thurstonz, Elysée Wednesday: Drive! https://tinyurl.com/y3la8ca9 sprang from my weekly Elysée Wednesday group listed in Facebook as: "This Ferrari/finance/film/homeless group founded by Stephen Mitchell gathers every Wednesday evening at about 8:00pm or shortly thereafter. Usually, we gather on the Sunset Strip but members will receive updates every Wednesday with the particulars." Originally, the venue was the Elysée Bakery in Westwood, hence the name. It was a gathering where people from all over the world would congregate to meet and share stories about cars, filmmaking or other extraordinary adventures and experiences. The turnout could range from four to forty. When the attendance was very light, we'd walk downs the street to Le Petit Four, my favorite French bistro. The main focus was on Ferraris, it must be said--one evening, Richard Mitchell @bongorama handed me the keys to a Testarossa, on another he takes me for a stunning ride in a 360 Modena ("Stops on a dime and gives you nine cents change"). One EW post began, "Last night, the Elysée Wednesday gathering culminated with my being handed the keys to a red Ferrari 355 Spider F1 by its very gracious owner, his only warning being that the hard tires were cold and he had once gotten the car perpendicular to the traffic pattern by applying just a little too much throttle under similar circumstances. I took heed."
