Fun Fact and History Lesson!

The 'no beta we die like [character]' originated from this damn photo that went viral on Tumblr in 2016 and changed Ao3 tags and fanfic vernacular forever.

Meaning: it's a tag used on fics that were not beta read (the author didn't get someone to read it for them before posting). Betas read fics to check for spelling, grammar, consistently, etc and often edit it.

Similarly, 'Dead dove' or 'dead dove do not eat' is from this scene in Arrested Development.

Meaning: if there's a warning of something really dark/bad, don't open/read it and expect something different. Or: 'mind the tags this is dark, don't read if you don't like it'.

Effort and intention do not excuse one's actions. They may provide a reason and they may mitigate the impact, but they don't undo what's been done.

Bruce does not mean to nor wants to hurt his kids, but he still does. Repeatedly. Constantly. Without change. Without growth. In plain fucking canon material, he hurts them. Again and again and again.

Sometimes, it's unintentional. Sometimes, it's through inaction or inadequately expressing himself. Sometimes, he apologizes or tries to make up for what he's done (and sometimes he intentionally fucks over his kids and refuses to apologize or even acknowledge wrongdoing).

What he means to do matters little when the results consistently harm his family. He is not owed forgiveness because of how he feels about his kids or the effort he's made for them. He is not redeemed because he tries. The damage he causes can not be excused nor reversed even if he feels bad about it.

If, if, Bruce atoned for his wrongdoings, if the entire process was shown of him apologizing and proving to his children that they can rely on him again, this still does not mean that his kids have to or will forgive and trust him. He is not owed it no matter the amount of effort he puts into their relationship.

Hating Bruce Wayne is valid regardless of how that man feels about his actions.

i think one of the things that's really Gets Me (in a bad way) about the predominant value of "moral purity" in any sort of narrative especially among young people these days is that many if not most narratives outside of children's media are about extremely flawed human beings in a way that explores those flaws within the nature of being human. like, so many fictional characters are fucked up. that's their whole thing. that's the reason why those stories are written. because once you're no longer a child, the stories you read or watch or consume aren't to teach you right from wrong, they're to show you the nuances and messiness and moral complications that come from being a human in this world. but the people obsessed with purity still expect some sort of explicit "so this is the moral of the story :)" and "the good guys win and live happily ever after" and "any character with a notable flaw is irredeemably Bad" because they still expect everyone to have the neural development of a five year old

I hope all the assholes who made fun of people for caring about the Supreme Court during the 2016 presidential election are happy today watching the several bullshit rulings coming out that sets precedent for letting parents with religious objections determine what public schools can teach (and renormalizing othering of queer people) and also remaking lower court ability to stop Trump's executive orders. I'm sure this won't cause chaos and further erosion of democracy and human rights!
