FffSeven FfffSentence Fffffriday
I've been so bad at carving out time to write omg here's a little bit from the draft of Lights in the Shadow that I literally just wrote lmao (I had to allow myself to enjoy a beer before I could get out of my own head enough to get here).
Thanks for the tags, @awardenandacrow, @covertleathers, and @hyperions-light!
Rook (Dalgar Thorne) has tracked fellow Warden recruit Sibyl out into the night in the Wandering Hills, onto an old battlefield from the darkest days of the Fourth Blight where the Fade presses on a patch of the Veil that's only gossamer-thin. It's a dangerous place for mages who are not on their guard—a dangerous place for not-quite-yet-wardens. Forgive me, I'm dramatic when I'm tipsy.
~
Dalgar’s breath came loud and far too ragged, visible with every gasp in the sallow light of his conjured flame. Too much time had passed by now and the snow was falling heavier around him; he had lost Sibyl’s trail. With the clouds swallowing the moon and surrounded on all sides by a maze of earthen mounds, the world felt entirely too small for his comfort and yet—
There is only to open the door, mon chou.
—and yet there was the understanding of everything just out of sight, but still within reach, like hiding in the narrow corridor of hanging linens when the chapel laysisters set them out to dry on wash day. Dalgar failed to suppress a shudder at a chill that came more from within than without. How many bodies beneath his feet? How many brothers and sisters?
How steeped in blood and blight was this soil?

Lights in the Shadow (WIP) Snippet
Short story about my Warden Rook's Joining is coming along.
Again, this is inspired by #s 21 + 22 from the Rook Story Time Prompts by @hyperions-light. They've also released some additional writing prompts for Rook Thorne that look like they'll be a lot of fun as well!
Below the cut is a bit of what I've written (unedited) since the last time I shared; Dalgar and fellow Warden recruit Conrad are talking about hauntings after passing by an old battlefield from the Fourth Blight.
Additional excerpts from this story here and here.
~
The wind had branded Conrad’s cheeks an even brighter red than usual and dragged tears from his eyes. Dalgar reached up and pulled his hood back over his ears and held it in place as they walked.
“There was a field like that a ways away from my uncle’s farm," Conrad began—Dalgar braced himself for another story about pigs. “My brothers and cousins and I camped out there once, on a dare. I kept seeing lights? Always just out of the corner of my eye.”
Wisps, Dalgar thought. Better topic than pigs.
“Sounds dangerous,” he said. “What if there was something worse out there?” Conrad shrugged, close enough his shoulder collided with Dalgar’s upper arm.
“It was my oldest cousin’s idea—he was full of stories about specters that tell you when you’re gonna die and being haunted by the ghosts of people who died horribly, moaning and dragging their guts behind ‘em or something. We actually lost him for a bit that night, when the clouds covered the moon. Kept hearing his voice though! He didn’t show his face again until dawn, the jackass.”
Dalgar raised his eyebrows and glanced at him from the corner of his eye. This was the most animated he would get, telling Dalgar stories as they hiked through the Hills. Conrad’s face was screwed up with the memory of old indignation and his accent got a little stronger. Dalgar thought it was sort of cute.
“What happened to him?” he asked.
“Nothing. Just wanted to give us a scare. He wouldn’t say a word about how he stayed out of sight. Weren’t too many places to hide.” Conrad swore under his breath. “Stopped telling those stories, though. He’s a chanter at our town’s chantry now.”
He only hummed in response. Conrad’s cousin definitely met something far, far worse than a few wisps, Dalgar decided.
