one of my favorite phenomena i see often is "dpxdc" fanfiction but its literally just a dc fanfiction where the author has an oc named danny. they can look entirely different, they can be a different gender, they can have zero relations to the dp universe or ghosts or any of his whole shebang, have a different last name and a different origin timeline, doesnt even have to be the main character, anything, but as long as the op is like "no dude trust me its technically danny fenton" its like. considered a dpxdc fic. im not saying this is a bad thing im saying its fucking hilarious
#its like. a free way to get danny phantom fans to read your dc fanfic (and dc fans not to read it)#i once read a dead on main fic (admittedly very short) where other than the character tags the ONLY indication that jasons sleeping lover#was danny was that they had black hair. that could have been ANYONE. it wasnt even ABOUT him. this was someones 'red hood experiences#emotional growth' fic that they put in dp tags because... idk i guess they were just used to writing dpxdc and made it with that viewpoint#first?#idk its fun. it really emphasizes to me how dpxdc is its OWN fandom (as in people start from it as a separate source fanbase) and not#like... a regular just. crossover categorization#anyway i expect 80% of my followers to not know what these words mean and thats fine by me

I fucking hate using AO3. Every fic marked as a “crossover” are all artbooks, writing dumps, oneshot collections, and headcanon collections. Bitch!!! Use the fucking categorization system LIKE IT WAS MEANT TO BE USED!!! Put your Hazbin Hotel art in the Hazbin Hotel tag. Do NOT mix it with the fucking Regular Show tag just because you have RS art in the same art book!!! You can have more than one fucking artbook, or oneshot collection, or headcanon collection, or the like. The CROSSOVER tag. IS MEANT FOR CROSSOVERS.

For the fic asks: 1, 4 for your Community/Stargate crossover and/or your t100/Stargate crossover, 5 for your Lila/Rincón fic, and (even though I think I know the answer to this one) 28 in honor of your awesome post about beta readers. 😁
1: What fic of yours would you recommend to someone who had never read any of your work? (In other words, what do you think is the best introduction to your fics?)
Oh god…well, okay: for Stargate, I would say the original storage closet fic, Out Go The Lights, in which I managed some Sam/Jack angst, a lot of romance, some bickering with Daniel for good measure. And the sequel, Actions Speak Louder, because that's Jack POV and he was always my favourite to write, and I still think it's hilarious.
For Community, I might send people to When A Resistible Force Meets A Movable Object, which is a) one of my favourite fic titles that I've come up with (at least partly bc it's all my own work and NOT a song lyric for once), and b) a pretty good summation of what I wrote for Community, namely lots and lots of scenes of Jeff and Annie kissing and being neurotic, along with some messing with the order so it's not a linear story, because Community was great for doing some more out-there stuff.
And for Umbrella Academy, I'd say the Walmart Batman series (Wicked Games / My Girl Is A Heartbreak / Aren't We A Pair?). Because that's like, your basic AU, right? Canon divergence, Diego and Lila bouncing around Dallas in 1963, being knockoff Batman and Catwoman and enjoying their exciting little rivalry…and then I did some sexy whump of Diego, and some hurt/comfort, some more mild relationship turmoil and budget superheroing, and then, as has become fairly typical of my writing of these two, vaguely kinky sexytimes. All that, and a cuddly toy. XD
4: What detail in Tentacle Creatures From Another Dimension are you really proud of?
I picked the Community/Stargate crossover, because I love that one! I was particularly please with the order that they start seeing the alien bugs – Pierce from the day before, he's just seeing bugs and has come to school anyhow because he doesn't give a flying fuck; then Britta, because she's a flake and has canonically turned up to college high on peyote at least once, so no one believes her; then Jeff, who categorically refuses to admit that he's seeing anything until he absolutely has to; then Abed, at which point it becomes a credible threat bc he's the most factual; then Shirley and Annie bc Abed decided to use them as his test subjects, without their knowledge; and lastly Troy bc he didn't want to miss out!
5: What do you wish someone would ask you about Shelter from the Storm? Answer it now!
Oh crivens…okay, I'd love to talk more about some of the details of Rincón's background, because I did SO MUCH research, you guyz. So like – that was the name they gave him in the movie, and generally it's a surname rather than a first name, so I went with that idea – and the gang he's in (the real-life Mara Salvatrucha or MS-13) is Salvadoran, so I decided his family were from there. And I read up about the history of the gang, and how it actually evolved in LA in the 80s (stellar work, Regan), initially to protect Salvadoran immigrants from other gangs before becoming a more regular criminal enterprise. Then in the 90s, when gang members were being deported to El Salvador, they took the opportunity given by the country's shaky state (just coming to the end of a 12-year civil war) to infiltrate and establish themselves.
And I thought how easy it must have been—between government death squads taking out guerrillas and anyone suspected of supporting them, and then the gangs moving in and starting up industrial-strength criminal activity—for ordinary families to just fall between the wheels of one or the other. And just…the fucking tragedy of it, and the inescapability, when it's your home—how many people must have been affected so terribly in one way or another, not because they've chosen it but simply because the fight is happening all around them. And this is how you end up with young people joining gangs, because these situations offer them no good choices, and at least that's the one with familiar faces, right?
I also found a sweet little town, in the back end of beyond, and had a virtual walk through the streets thanks to Google Earth, and came across a little gallery called El Rincón del Arte (The Art Corner), and thought, you know, if my family name was Rincón, I might use that as a pun if I was setting up a business. :)
28: Does anyone read your fics before you post them? If so, who?
XD Well if you don't know this, I don't know who would! Yes, for the last, oh gosh…since whenever you started beta-reading my Community fic, which was pretty early on? I've almost always had someone read them first – you for the Community and Stargate fics, and then Lochrann as well, for the Umbrella Academy ones. And it is the BEST. Not just for the feedback and corrections – which are always appreciated, of course! – but because it's so great to have those detailed conversations about a story, I love the collaborative feel of it, it gives so much more depth to a story when it's not just coming from me, but from someone else feeding ideas into it, or pushing me to think more about some aspect or other, or just being as enthusiastic as I am about a ship, and helping me to keep that energy going to get it done. It's no coincidence that my most productive fandoms (Stargate, Community, Umbrella Academy) are all once where I've had the joy of doing that.
Thank you!!!

Hi Jenn. Thank you for being awesome in general, and for continuing to take time to answer questions. I just finished The House in the Cerulean Sea and am a little confused. My library and several major websites categorize this novel as YA. But the main character is 40, and most of the kids he interacts with are younger than YA age. Is this classification just a weird mistake, or something to do with the tone or content of the novel? I thought I understood MC age-->category! :/
House in the Cerulean Sea is an adult book.
How do I know that? Well, it was published by an adult publisher. (TOR, not Tor Teen). It was on the adult fiction NYT Bestseller List, not the YA fiction list. It was a regular grown-up IndieNext pick, not a Kids/YA Indie Next pick.
Also, and crucially, as you mentioned, the lead character is 40.
However, it also did win an ALA Alex Award.
If you're unfamiliar, the Alex Award specifically celebrates books published for adults that have high appeal for teens.
Some libraries or bookstores may elect to shelve books like that in both the regular SF/F section AND the YA section. "Crossover" books, if you will. Like The Book Thief -- though published in the USA as a teen book (and in Australia as an adult book), in my bookstore it is shelved in both the adult section and the YA section, and sells equally well from both. Or Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time -- published as an adult book in this country (though YA in some other countries!) -- but is often read by teens and may be shelved in both locations.
In the case of House in the Cerulean Sea, it IS an adult book, and while it's fine if it is ALSO in the YA section, it should probably not ONLY be in the YA section, and if it is, that's a mistake. In my opinion. (Which is correct!)

ooooh i'd love to hear your thoughts on an rqg and stormlight crossover!
absolutely.
(send me 2+ fandoms and i’ll give you thoughts on crossing them over)
okay so first of all I’ve thought about this just a little already, in that i saw a significant link between zolf’s new ethos, the whole not-hope what-comes-next thing, and the first ideal, especially as presented in Oathbringer. The radiant orders in general actually feel like... especially codified paladins/clerics, where you get powers in exchange for subscribing to a certain set of ideals.
so i cheated a little and consulted a conversation i had on the rqbb server about radiant orders for the party; using that plus this radiant order guide, i came up with the following:
sasha’s an edgedancer. this is the one i’m most sure about; the slid-ey powers fit, but ‘remembering those who’ve been forgotten’ is also very sasha, especially with her Good End being starting an orphanage. plus she just has The Vibe, you know?
grizzop would make sense as a skybreaker, extremely lawful good and focused on justice, defending the innocent and punishing the guilty. also the idea of him being able to fly brings the chaos gremlin in me joy.
I’d make hamid a dustbringer, honestly because the description in the link above fits the narrative i’d like him to have, regarding the importance of responsibility and self-mastery as one’s destructive power grows.
cel i’m less confident on, but i think i’d go with willshaper; there’s a focus on personal freedom and self-expression, liberation from tyranny, and the order also has an association with creators. (if ppl have thoughts on this lmk because i dont have that great of a handle on cel tbh)
sidenote, skraak would definitely be a willshaper too.
azu is... difficult. i want her to have regrowth as a surge because i feel like healing is a really important thing for her, and she does kinda vibe as an edgedancer... but the stonewards’ focus on dependability and team dynamics, their refusal to bend their ideals, and even just the minor bits like interest in athletics just really fits for her, so i’d have to go with that. i guess kaladin has healing as a central part of his character without it being a surge, so... yes. stoneward. go read the description, the more i think about this the more it seems Correct.
and finally, zolf. the source of so many headaches, i do not understand this man. i can kinda see him as a windrunner, stoneward, skybreaker, or bondsmith, but i’m not confident with any of them. i would lean toward bondsmith just because both the source above and the textual evidence we have with dalinar and navani suggest that bondsmiths are hard to categorize, as far as values, other than them being leaders.
but the question of zolf brings me to a big question-- would they all be radiants? i think they would all have the potential, certainly, any one of them has enough bullshit in the backstory to have cracks that would allow a nahel bond, and enough determination to speak the first ideal and mean it. but that doesn’t mean they’d all attract/bond spren, and i havent even decided how, if at all, i’m dealing with the whole humans vs. singers thing.
(adding a readmore discussing where i see zolf going bc it’s getting long)
but, uh, here’s something rough: i think zolf would pull a baby-shallan and kill his first spren. probably, this would be a highspren; early zolf is very strongly dedicated to the idea of an unbendable truth, divine justice. and i think his point of breaking might even be similar to his questioning of poseidon in canon, because stormlight/cosmere actually engages with the question of “how does someone become a god,” and the answer is “by killing the old one” which very much would not qualify them to be an arbiter of justice in zolf’s eyes.
i think stormlight!zolf would find out that honor is dead, along with the revelation about humans being the invaders (if that’s still what’s going on in this crossover), and have a paris-equivalent breakdown about what ‘the right thing’ or ‘justice’ even mean. he wouldn’t believe in his ideals anymore, he’d ‘kill’ his spren, and that would make his spiral a lot worse.
i’m not sure what would happen from there.
it’s possible that he’d wake his highspren again by speaking a higher ideal the way kaladin does, though i’m still not perfectly clear on the mechanics of that; zolf actually does still have the dedication to punishing the guilty, he just doesn’t look for an external code as the source of justice anymore, and that’s actually consistent with some higher skybreaker ideals. but he doesn’t really vibe with the whole ‘order and codified law’ thing.
i can see him returning as a bondsmith, but in an awkward sort of situation similar to navani’s, where the spren isn’t fully comfortable with him and he’s doing it largely out of need. but also i don’t want that for him?? his turn in canon to the new source of power feels like it was good for him, and i’d want to do something equivalent, and this feels like it would be almost self-destructive.
but as i was noodling around on the orders explanation page, i noticed this in the description of bondsmiths: “Beyond that, many of the retinues that protected the Bondsmiths were considered members of the Order–going so far as to swear oaths, even though they didn’t have a spren and never would. Some even called this the most pure form of being a Radiant, because these were oaths sworn not in the name of gaining powers, but simply for the good of the oaths themselves.”
and my brain lit up at that, bc you know whose arc is about growing as a person and dedicating themselves to uniting people and leading? wilde. so i’m imagining wilde becoming a bondsmith, and zolf not bonding a new spren but swearing the first ideal in spirit because that is genuinely what he believes, and just being part of wilde’s team, keeping him safe as a regular human/maybe having some squire powers.
WELL i’ve done a lot of thinking about orders and almost none about plot or even actual character backstories, but I’ve spent a while on this. i’m very likely to come back to this because rqg is definitely my current Main Fandom and (as you can tell from the url) the cosmere is my beloved, so... yes.
#rqg#stormlight archive#crossover ask game#at this point i could still place them alongside canon stormlight characters#or have them replace them narratively#and im not sure which i would go for yet#almost certainly more to follow#if i replace ppl hamid is probably some equivalent to a kholin#...dragons are Juicy in cosmere setting though#hmmmmmm

qb’s 2020 Anime List
[Representation of making my brain recall anything from last year]
As usual, these are ordered by whatever arbitrary mood I was in when I constructed the list. Do not cross reference this ordering with any other evaluations I may have done.
0. kiratto prichan but only after it lost all pretense of being grounded in reality

I don't want to explain why I watch this anime, but I will do it for the fans. It's the franchise people, by all rights, should make fun of me for watching instead of Precure, which is harmless; the Pretty Rhythm series is ill-advised subculture shitpost brainrot which has at least halved my IQ. PriChan had been very boring for at least a year since its premiere, but during 2020 went off the deep end in way that rekindled the unique flavor the decade-long series has traditionally had of doing the most dumbass thing every week and not letting any sort of television authority or good ideas stop it. I had fun every week once it got in the groove and remembered its roots as a dumbass crossover franchise with nothing to prove and nothing holding its stupid, fantastic ideas back. It’s always the most insane thing on TV and it never even has to try.

Also following the twitter cult that formed around a rare plushie from this show with a wide face. That was the most entertaining thing of 2020 for me.
1. Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken!

Creatively inspiring in a year without many sources of creative inspiration, the airing of this anime mirrored my unwilling dive into learning too much about anime production than I ever meant to. Eizouken takes the sketchbook ideas of the manga and fully realizes its world into animation in a way that only Masaki Yuasa and Science Saru could pull off, while simultaneously giving rising stars in the industry their first chance at directing episodes. It's a very satisfying show to watch and if there's anything on this list that inspired me to finally just slam words on paper and get this out it was thanks to watching Eizouken at some point in my life.
The season is split into three distinct “projects” and each of these end in a such a strong climax that I have to recommend watching it 4 episodes at a time, if you are able to. Here’s an endcard by tkmiz
2. Magia Record: Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica Gaiden
3. DECA-DENCE

I like a nice contained science fiction and this one's episode 2 hook was so shocking that I was glued to my screen until the very end. It’s not perfect, but it’s about as perfect as you could reasonably expect to get from the year 2020. The less you know going in the better so I’ll shut up but it’s a much more ambitious sci-fi than you think it is at first. It might have been a had-to-be-there serial experience, so it could be impossible to really get the hype that was around this show at the time, but I think there’s enough there to stand on its own, and just having a definitive, satisfying ending in one season is an anime rarity worth recommending by itself.

4. Toilet-bound Hanako-kun

I love looking at pictures of cryptids and Lerche paneling and this gave me both in abundance. It rides the line between telling Shonen and Shoujo stories, like many Seinen that defy easy categorization do, and I’ve always been a sucker for that. Along with the anime being drop dead gorgeous on a weekly basis, I enjoyed the lovable cast of various SUPERNATURAL DANGER BOYS and also Yashiro who provides the funniest faces and widest ankles of the whole show, despite stiff competition.

5. Talentless Nana

Came outta nowhere and exceeded expectations for a frankly kind of mediocre thriller manga by absolutely nailing the strong first episode/chapter hook, then continuing to nail it every week with smart directing. I’m obligated to pay attention to this team in the future if they're capable of making something this compelling on a limited drawing budget. (the core staff were all Heybot regulars, which either means something or doesn’t)

6. Extra Olympia Kyklos
The one-person studio that made this did not have a high bar to clear to be the best Olympic tie-in anime (the only other one I can recall is the rare media Eagle Sam which sucks complete ass) but despite the Olympics not even happening in 2020, it soldiered on, and was easily the most I laughed at anime in that year. Kyklos takes serious source material and just spices it up beyond recognition with bizarre jokes, perfect timing, and hilariously cheap original music videos at the end of every episode that wouldn’t be out of place on adult swim bumpers. Overall it’s very surprising that this was funded at all once anyone saw what it was, but I’m so glad the creator got away with it. In a way, it’s the perfect monument to this psychotic year.
7. Kakushigoto
I just think the author is funny and this is a good anime adaptation that outpaces the original, by the author's own admission/intention. 61-sensei is the best girl
All Hail The Daia Bread All Hail The Daia Bread

these were all enjoyable too:
Gal and dino
Hit in the right spot at the time, when we all needed a roommate who couldn’t catch covid
Star twinkle precure movie
I'd show this to people to introduce them to precure if not for the song and dance number at the end being kinda lame
Mewkledreamy
it’s not going to end precure but it has incredible faces
BOFURI: I don’t want to get hurt so I maxed out my defense

The 2021 Polestar 2 is a truly cool EV
New Post has been published on https://appradab.com/the-2021-polestar-2-is-a-truly-cool-ev-2/
The 2021 Polestar 2 is a truly cool EV

The Polestar 2 is one of the coolest EVs on sale.
Daniel Golson/Roadshow
Most new EVs either look too normal to stand out or too strange to entice regular consumers, but the Polestar 2 perfectly lands in that middle ground. To my eyes, this is one of the first truly cool EVs — at least in terms of more affordable cars. And when it comes to new segments and emerging tech, sometimes being cool is the most important thing.
Like
Fantastic stying inside and out
Super quick and fun to drive
Great Google infotainment system
Don’t Like
Less range than Tesla
Only comes in one expensive configuration
Limited servicing network
A real crowd pleaser
I live in Los Angeles, where hybrids and EVs are common — basically every other car you see is a Tesla. But the Polestar really grabs peoples’ attention. Chalk some of that up to it being new and some of it to its lack of badging — either way, most people just don’t know the hell it is. They just know it’s something new and cool, and want to learn more about it.
It’s hard to categorize the Polestar 2. At first glance it looks like a traditional sedan, but it’s got a fastback rear end with a hatch instead of a trunk. The Polestar has a higher ride height than most sedans (it’s an inch taller than a BMW 3 Series but more than 4 inches shorter in length) and SUV-like body cladding, making it a bit of a pseudo-crossover. However you classify it, the Polestar 2 is an extremely handsome car, with minimal body surfacing and great proportions.
It’s obvious the Polestar 2 was originally designed to be a Volvo, but that’s not a bad thing. Still, lots of little details set it apart from other Volvos, like the blocky patterned grille and full-width LED taillight strip. The only badges on the car are body-color Polestar logos on the hood and trunk, as well as subtle stickers on the front doors that denote the model name, battery pack size and power output.
The Volvo influence is obvious in the 2’s interior, but Polestar’s designers really turned the specialness up a notch or two. My test car has the Slate color scheme, which features vegan WeaveTech surfaces that feel like a high-end windbreaker and black ash wood trim. There’s a good amount of head- and legroom for front and rear passengers and the cabin feels airy thanks to the huge standard panoramic sunroof. I wish there was a sunshade for the roof, though, as direct sunlight can still be annoying despite the tinted glass. Another major downside is a lack of storage up front, with only one usable cupholder in the center console (there’s another under the center armrest) and fairly small door pockets. Still, the overall vibe is very Swedish high-end furniture/audio store and it genuinely feels premium.

The Polestar’s Google-based infotainment system is one of our favorites.
Daniel Golson/Roadshow
OK, Google, you rule
The Polestar 2 is the first production car to use Google’s Android Automotive infotainment tech and even for a staunch iPhone user like myself I think it’s easily one of the best systems on the market. (Don’t worry, Apple CarPlay functionality is coming and I don’t even miss it during my time with the car.) The system looks fantastic and the 11-inch screen is super quick and snappy, plus it’s easy to log into my Google account via QR code and download apps like Spotify from the Google Play store. There aren’t too many apps yet and missing ones include Audible and some major podcast platforms, but they’re coming. The Google Assistant voice commands work well too and it can even control things like the seat heaters. The only physical controls are a volume knob and buttons for the heated windshield and rear window, meaning even climate controls are accessed through the screen, but that’s easy to get used to.
The best part of the Android system is that Google Maps is the native navigation. I typically gravitate towards using Google Maps through CarPlay over any built-in nav and it looks even sharper on the Polestar’s display — there’s even a nearly full-screen view for Maps in the 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster. The Google tech has some nice EV-specific features, like showing the estimated range and charge you’ll have at the end of a set journey and providing an info-filled list of charging stations. I do wish you could see a satellite map view, though.
Shirking the EV norms
For now, every Polestar 2 comes the same way; there’s one battery pack size and one motor configuration. There’s an electric motor at each axle for a combined output of 408 horsepower and 487 pound-feet of torque, with all-wheel drive as standard. With a 0-to-60-mph time of 4.5 seconds the Polestar 2 is damn quick. Launches push you back in your seat and the performance doesn’t seem to fade after multiple goes. There’s no sport mode or adjustable power setting, so you’ve always got the full amount of torque no matter what. I do like that you can turn the idle creep function on and off, too — I prefer to leave it off like a brake hold feature.
There are three settings for the steering, the firmest of which is my favorite. It’s really nicely weighted, direct and actually offers a good amount of feedback, which is not the norm for EVs. The Polestar’s chassis is great too and the car feels a lot more nimble than its nearly 5,000-pound weight suggests. An ESC Sport mode reduces the intervention of the stability control, but it doesn’t make a massive difference in the dry. Overall, the Polestar 2 is just as fun to drive in the twisties as it is around town. Impressive.

That subtle styling packs a major punch.
Daniel Golson/Roadshow
But the best part of the Polestar 2 isn’t how it launches or how it corners, it’s how it stops. The 2 has a regenerative braking system that affords true one-pedal driving and once you’ve experienced an EV with a good one-pedal system, it’s hard to go back to anything else. The Polestar lets you select between having the regen fully off, having it in a low setting that won’t bring the car to a complete stop, or keeping it in the standard mode. Keeping the Polestar in the standard mode the whole time, I maybe touch the brake pedal half a dozen times over the course of a week of testing. Even during a very spirited drive on some canyon roads, the regen is so strong and easy to regulate that I never have to tap the brakes.
You can add a $5,000 performance package, but honestly, I wouldn’t. While I love the design of the 20-inch wheels and the gold seatbelts, the Polestar 2’s regenerative braking makes the performance pack’s upgraded front Brembo brakes unnecessary. And as cool as the manually adjustable Öhlins dampers might seem, they’re annoying to adjust and make the car ride worse than with the standard setup. Plus, if you really want bigger wheels, a set of 20-inchers with a sweet 4-spoke design is available for $1,200.
Standard active-safety features include Volvo’s Pilot Assist system (adaptive cruise control with steering assist), automated emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic assist, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, a 360-degree camera and parking sensors. Every Polestar 2 also comes with heated front and rear seats, a heated steering wheel, heated windshield wipers, active LED headlights, a Harman Kardon sound system, ambient interior lighting and a wireless phone charger.

The Polestar 2’s interior reminds me of high-end furniture.
Daniel Golson/Roadshow
Let’s talk about range
The EPA says the Polestar 2 has a range of 233 miles per charge and while I never fully charge or fully deplete the battery pack, the car’s estimated range readout seems accurate if not a little conservative. It only gives the range in 5-mile increments, which I think is fine — I’m never going to get close enough to empty for a super-precise readout to really matter anyway. The Polestar’s range is way more enough for me and it certainly is enough for the majority of consumers, especially those with short commutes. But I wouldn’t hesitate to take it on a long highway trip that would require charging; Polestar says the 2 can gain an 80% charge in just 40 minutes on a 150-kilowatt DC fast charger.
There’s a lot of public charging in Los Angeles, but nearly every time I charged it was at the same location close to my apartment, so I didn’t have to deal with a lot of searching for stations that aren’t either broken or occupied. (There was a massive puddle of oil on the ground next to my parking spot the first time I charged, go figure.) While Polestar has no fast-charging network of its own like Tesla, you can charge it up at third-party stations like those from Electrify America and EVgo. Polestar also recently announced a partnership with ChargePoint in which the companies will launch an in-car app and expand access to all of ChargePoint’s 130,000 chargers.

Rejoice! It’s a hatchback!
Daniel Golson/Roadshow
One configuration fits all
The Polestar 2 starts at $61,200 including destination, but before any incentives. It’s eligible for a federal $7,500 tax credit, which brings the price down to $52,400. With $1,200 Snow paint and the $5,000 performance pack, my test car is $67,400. The only option left on the table is the $4,000 ventilated leather interior that would bring the price to $71,400. So yeah, the Polestar is quite pricey, even among other premium EVs. (Cheaper models with fewer standard features will eventually arrive, though no details have been announced yet.)
The easiest comparison to draw is with the Tesla Model 3, as it’s the only other premium electric sedan in the same size class as the Polestar. The all-wheel-drive Long Range Model 3 starts at $46,690 before any incentives and offers slightly quicker acceleration and a much longer range (353 miles). Then there’s the $54,690 Model 3 Performance, which has a 315-mile range and will hit 60 mph a full second quicker than the Polestar. In terms of performance and value for money, the Model 3 creams the Polestar 2.
I don’t want the Tesla, though. The Polestar 2 is more enjoyable to drive, better to look at and way nicer inside, plus I prefer its tech and the hatchback rear end. And most importantly (at least to me), the Polestar is just more interesting. Even if Teslas weren’t so common where I live, I’d still want to be seen in the Polestar. Driving it feels like I’m at the cutting edge of the industry.
The Polestar 2 is currently available to order online, with test drives, delivery and servicing handled by the brand’s Spaces showrooms. As of right now there are only a few, mostly in California with one in Denver and another in New York City. But Polestar promises that 15 more showrooms will open by the end of 2021 in places like Boston, Seattle, Detroit and Miami. If you’re interested in a premium electric car and have a Polestar Space near you, I highly recommend checking it out. You might end up the coolest person in your neighborhood.

hiiii idk why i'm so nervous but i really really wanna start writing fanfiction. ljke full out "woah this makes me feel stuff" fanfiction and i thought you'd be the best place to come for pointers because you're literally amazing but anyways do ylu have any suggestions as to 1. where to write it 2. starting tips 3. what not to do?? thanks!! i really really want to but i'm little scared to
OOOH, I WAS RECENTLY GIVING THE SAME ADVICE TO MEG BONNEY ON TWITTER. Okay, here we go. Let’s do this.
How To Start Writing Fanfic for Beginners:
Okay, so, the first thing we usually do is have a beta reader-- someone who looks over stories and checks for writing flow, typos, and, most importantly in the case of fanfiction, characterization. You find one before you start writing so that you have a cheerleader who can talk about ideas with you and push you through when you feel like you wanna quit. This is a formality, though, and can be skipped. My one-shots usually are in the 20k+ range so I like to have three or four people look over them, but if I'm writing a 6k one shot, for example, I only have one beta reader.
I’m actually pretty sure that the origination of this practice actually came from everyone trying to figure out how to make friends in fandom. If you're the beta reader on someone's story, you're automatically buddies. Google docs has made this way easier, though-- it used to be long email chains. *shudders*
Step two, decide which host sites you're going to post your fic on. Different fandoms are more popular on different fic sites. The most popular fanfic sites are http://fanfiction.net , http://archiveofourown.org (AO3, we call it), and sometimes tumblr, depending on the length of the fic!
So, for example, the Percy Jackson fandom is really really into http://fanfiction.net (or at least was when I was writing for it?) That's where you get the most reviews/comments and the most hits for that fandom. In the case of Teen Wolf/Stydia the most popular site is AO3, easily. But if the piece you wrote is a drabble (in the 1k range), you can also plop it on tumblr. If it's in the 2k range, it's acceptable to put it on tumblr under a "read more."
For all these sites, you need an account, but AO3 is technically in beta mode (idk why; it's been like that for multiple years?) and therefore you sign up and then have to wait for an invite. But it's worth it because once you have an account, you can view the history of the fics you've read, bookmark faves, leave comments, and, of course, publish fics.
Unlike ffnet, AO3 also categorizes fics into fandoms, which is really really helpful if you write for multiple fandoms. Their sorting system is really good and really specific, which is why people use it. I think that, at this point, AO3 is undoubtedly the most diversely enjoyed site.
Here's some things you definitely need to know about posting on AO3:
(This is SUPER important), it's considered REAL bad manners to tag characters/ships that aren't the centric pairing. So, the fic is gonna ask you for characters and the ship. If you're writing a fic where Stiles and Lydia are the centric pairing, you're gonna fill in Lydia Martin, Stiles Stilinski, and then Lydia Martin/Stiles Stilinski. But say your story also has a few scenes with Scott? Either don't mention Scott, or do "Scott McCall- Side.”
The reader should be able to clearly tell what type of fic it is by your tags. (Unless you don’t want them to know). You can create your own tags or you can use the site's already established ones. AO3 tags can get slightly obnoxious but nobody’s going to call you out for that so enjoy.
If your fic takes place within the bounds of the series, you tag it "Canon Compliant." If it not only fits with the plot of the series but also takes place literally during the series, tag it "Missing Moments." If it diverges from the plot line of the series, you tag it "Canon Divergent." If it is after the series is over, tag it "Post-Canon."
If it’s AU, tag the kind of AU it is. “Coffee Shop AU” “AU-- The Hunger Games” “AU-- Everyone Lives” “AU-- Stiles is Olaf from Frozen and gets it on with Anna who is Lydia.” (Spoilers for my next fic.) (Just kidding.)
ALSO when you're posting, it's a huge struggle because AO3 either requires HTML coded stuff (for italics, etc) or rich text. My suggestion would be either putting your fic on tumblr and copy and pasting the rich text from the finished post, or getting an account on ffnet and using their document uploader to c+p your fic into, then save it and copy and paste it into the rich text part of the fic loader on AO3
So now, ratings.
Here's what you've got: G,T, M, E.
G is like... no swearing, no mention of sex, you could read it as a bed time story to a 6 year old.
T is swearing, acknowledgment that sex exists, maybe some kissing (but you're getting to shaky territory as soon as you venture anywhere remotely past second base) light, non-descriptive violence (there's also a tag for violence under "archive warnings" because some people get triggered by it.)
M is lighter sex scenes (I would say anything that doesn't describe genitalia? Idk, this is a real fine line. I think you’ll feel it in your bones. Or, bone, in the case of smut.
Nailed that joke.
HA GEDDIT. I did it again.
E is like, you're going to hell for writing this, enjoy hanging out with satan in the fiery pits, I hope it's worth it.
If you post on tumblr, tag appropriately. Tumblr tagging is different from ao3-- you just tag to sort things, and so that the right people see your work. So, like, if you wrote a Stydia fic, obviously don't tag it Sterek or Sciles because you'll get hate, lmao. You can tag character names, but I would suggest you don't tag "Stiles Stilinski" or "Lydia Martin" because the Sterk/Mrrish/Stlia shippers tend to attack you. Also, only the first five tags count.
And now, the Don’ts of fanfiction***
Make sure your spacing doesn’t look awful.
It makes people not wanna read it
You should know what regular spacing looks like. If you’re able to correct it so that there’s not eons of space between paragraphs, I would do that.
Don’t say “Sorry for the bad summary I promise it’s better than it sounds” in your summary.
“Their tongues battle for dominance” or other equally cliche dialogue
Original characters as main characters
Fandom crossovers are almost always rolled their eyes at in the fic community. Like, you can thrust your characters into a different universe, but normally, you can’t use the original characters. So by all means, write a Percy Jackson AU, but don’t make Fitzwilliam Darcy best friends with Annabeth Chase.
POV SWITCHING IN YOUR FIC
Okay this is really delicate because some people can do it really well and some people can’t
Switching back and forth between character point of view within one section of your fic is really hard for the reader to keep up with and it tends to look clumsy. It’s a no-no.
If you have divides between sections, that’s where you can switch POV.
However, I tend to write almost all of my fics with just one POV. I pick Character 1 or Character 2 no matter how long it is. It’s cleaner that way.
NEVER USE FIRST PERSON IN FANFICTION, IT IS UNIVERSALLY LOATHED.
I need to remember this one-- don’t describe clothes too much. You’ll sound like a cheesy YA novel. (I’m a hypocrite, okay?)
Titles matter. Work hard on picking a title. I s2g it actually makes a big difference. Idk why. Titles.
***Side note: All writing rules are all allowed to be broken. There is truly no such thing as a steadfast writing rule. The more comfortable you get with writing, the more comfortable you could be with breaking these rules. Does that make sense?

Why MSI Gaming Laptops Are Perfect for Any Kind of Gamer
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
This article is presented by MSI.
Let’s face it: gaming laptops can be pricey, which is why it’s good to do your research before buying one. It’s important to take stock of the specs you’ll need to play the latest games as well as the components that make those specs possible.
Almost as important as the specs is the company you’re buying the laptop from. As far as that goes, it’s easy to recommend MSI. The firm has been in the computer business for over 30 years, making it one of the most trusted gaming laptop manufacturers in the world.
One of the best things about MSI is the myriad choices they offer to gamers looking to buy a new portable. But with several laptops across four different series — GE, GS, GL, and GF — picking the right one for you might seem daunting. So let’s break down what you need to know, starting with what specs and components you need to look for in 2020 before jumping into what each MSI series has to offer.
Picking the Best Components
I’m going to break this down into four sections: CPU, RAM, GPU, and screen. Yes, other components are important, but these are the ones that’ll impact your gaming the most, and if you’re weighing up cost against performance, these are the key areas you’re going to want to concentrate on.
CPU
Intel processors come in four flavors: Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, and Core i9. All you really need to know is that the higher the number on the end, the better the performance – provided you’re comparing chips from the same generation. Given MSI’s new gaming laptops all use the latest and greatest 10th-generation CPUs, that’s a moot point, so we don’t need to get into the nitty-gritty here.
You can also discount the Core i3 chip, which is a budget processor not really suited for gaming. Thankfully, MSI agrees – none of their models cut corners by packing an i3. All of MSI’s latest laptops provide the CPU power you need to get gaming.
With that in mind, the i5 is very much the entry-level chip and more than powerful enough for most games, but may prove a bottleneck as the years go by. The i9, by contrast, is top of the line if you’re interested in future-proofing your laptop – and it has a cost to match. For us, the happy medium is the i7 chip: enough processing power to run the latest games smoothly without breaking the bank.
RAM
RAM is also vital to gaming performance. This is where your computer stores data for quick access, and as games get more demanding, more is better.
While most games list 4GB of RAM as the minimum requirement for a good gaming experience, MSI sensibly starts its range at 8GB, going all the way up to 32GB for its top-of-the-range models. For almost all gamers, 16GB is fine and probably will be in the immediate future. Upping to 32GB will help some games – demanding flight sim Digital Combat Simulator World recommends it for more complex missions – but it’s far from essential in 2020.
But, hey: a bit of future-proofing is always nice.
Graphics
If you want to splurge on any single component, this is the place to do it. Your graphics chip – or GPU – has the most say over what resolution you can play with and how high you can push that detail.
MSI’s laptops come with NVIDIA GTX or RTX chips, but we’d highly recommend the latter. Not only are RTX 20-series GPUs faster but they also support ray tracing, which renders lighting effects like shadows and reflections in real time for unprecedented realism in supported games. To put it simply, ray tracing is the latest innovation in gaming graphics and you should seriously consider buying a laptop with a GPU designed to deliver those advanced graphics.
It’s not that GTX GPUs are slow, and they’ll be more than enough for most titles in the short to medium term. But if you want to push triple-figure frame rates, then you’ll want an RTX card. If your budget doesn’t stretch that far, then at least opt for a GTX 1660-series card over a 1650 one. The difference between the two is sizable.
Each NVIDIA card comes in two or three classes: regular, Super, and Ti. Ti is the fastest, followed by Super, with the vanilla card in last. Just be aware that a regular chip will beat the Ti version of the generation before it – in other words a 1660 is still better than a 1650 Ti.
Screen Specs
The most important thing to keep in mind with laptop screens is the refresh rate, measured in Hertz (Hz), and response time measured in milliseconds (ms). The former is how often the image on a screen can be redrawn in a second, while the latter is how quickly a display’s pixels can switch from being active to inactive.
Or to put it another way, refresh rate puts a cap on the number of frames per second you can game at, while a lower response time prevents image ghosting. Most of MSI’s 2020 gaming laptops come with reassuringly low response times of 3ms, while the refresh rate is 120Hz – meaning you can comfortably hit the standard of 120 fps. The higher-spec laptops can go as high as 300Hz, which means you can theoretically hit a buttery smooth 300fps in games – although this, of course, depends on the power of your other internals.
Resolution is also a factor, but all of MSI’s laptops have FHD screens rather than pushing 2K or even 4K. This is sensible from a performance point of view: not only is 1080p gaming smoother, it’s also less of a drain on battery life.
Meet MSI’s Gaming Laptops
Starting at $799, you’ll be pleased to hear that MSI’s 2020 gaming laptops more than deliver when it comes to the above specs and components. Every laptop comes with at least an Intel Core i5 CPU, 8GB RAM, and a 120Hz screen to give you the best gaming experience possible.
But with four different series to choose from, it can get a little confusing to know which laptop is right for you. So what’s the difference between the GS, GL, GE and GF series? Well according to this chart, courtesy of MSI, you can divide them like this:
So, MSI’s GS and GF laptops are designed with portability in mind, while GE and GL machines are prepped for performance? That’s a useful broad categorization but it doesn’t quite do these laptops justice, given the GS66 10SGS-031 comes with an Intel Core i9 processor and top-of-the-line RTX 2080 Super GPU on board!
MSI’s gaming laptops are quite stylish, forgoing the over-the-top design that some gaming brands favor for something understated but modern that can blend in at both LAN parties and in class.
The GS line is the real standout here: a deserving winner of 2020 design awards from both iF and Red Dot, its thin frame exudes quality in sandblasted black, with a laser-etched MSI logo on the back.
If you want to make more of a statement, then the RGB-lit GF line might be up your alley. An iF Design Award winner last year, its brushed aluminum stylings certainly catch the eye, and its 0.1-inch bezels won’t distract you from the game, either. At just 0.8 inches thick when closed, and tipping the scales at just 4.1 pounds, it’s clearly designed to be at your side wherever you need it.
These 0.1-inch bezels are adopted by both the weightier GL and GE designs too – and the latter is the one to go for if you want to turn heads. The Dragon Armor carving on the base gives it a whole lot of personality, while the RGB lighting strip along the front can turn to any of 16.7 million colors to match your game or mood.
As there’s some crossover in terms of design and components, it’s probably best to assess the laptops by their relative price points. Here’s a quick breakdown of what you can expect from each series as well as our picks for each category:
MSI GL65
Entry Level
$799 to $1200
At this price point, you’re almost exclusively looking at the GF series, but it’s still no slouch. The $799 GF75 10SCXR-003 comes with a 10th-generation i5 processor, 8GB RAM, and a GTX 1650 GPU – more than enough to run games like Fortnite at 1080p with graphics quality set to “high.”
But spend a little more and things improve dramatically. If you can reach $1199, your frame rates will thank you: both the GF75 10SCXR-055 and GL65 10SDR-221 feature Core i7 processors, double the RAM, and the GTX series’ top-of-the-line 1660 Ti GPU, which will make mincemeat of today’s top titles.
Standard Level
$1200 to $1500
If you’ve got this kind of money to burn, things open up considerably: a Core i7 processor and 16GB RAM is a given, and you can begin to consider the super-powerful RTX ray tracing Nvidia GPUs. These machines are all unambiguously VR ready, too – happy days!
The cheapest machines with RTX graphics start at $1399. There’s the GF75 10SER-257, which comes with a Core i7 processor, 16GB RAM, a ray tracing RTX 2060 GPU, a 1TB NVMe SSD, and a massive 17.3” screen
But the pick of the bunch is the GL65 10SFK-062 for $1399. This laptop packs a RTX 2070 GPU for that extra graphical performance where it really counts as well as a 15.6” screen for a bit more portability.
MSI GE66
Enthusiast Level
$1500+ If you have over $1500 to spend, then you can really let loose. MSI laptops at this price point offer serious power, and you should expect to push high FPS in even the most demanding games. Most of these laptops also offer screens of 240Hz and over as well!
Almost without exception, at the enthusiast level, you’re getting at least RTX 2070-level graphics. For example, the $1799 GS66 10SF-005 comes with a Core i7 CPU, a RTX 2070 GPU, and 15.6” 240Hz screen.
And if you break the $2000 barrier things get really powerful. The $2199 GE66 10SFS-048 takes the foundations of the GS66 and packs a 32GB RAM and a RTX 2070 Super GPU.
If money is no object, and you want to make everyone extremely jealous, then both the GS66 10SGS-031 and GE66 10SGS-057 are simply as good as gaming laptops get at $2999. Both come with a 10th-generation Intel Core i9 processor, 32GB RAM, an RTX 2080 Super GPU, 1TB of fast NVMe storage, and a 300Hz display. This kind of setup will tackle any game you throw at it with ease, even if you turn things up to Ultra detail and add in ray tracing. To be clear, all of the laptops highlighted above will play the latest games in some form, but with gaming laptops, there’s a cast-iron rule: the more you spend, the better the performance. So always shoot for your maximum budget. If not for the immediate framerate gains, think about how long you want your laptop to last for – and more importantly, the jealous looks from your friends as you comfortably hit triple-figure framerates on all the latest ray traced games.

Soraya Roberts | Longreads | January 2020 | 9 minutes (2,284 words)
I hate jocks. Like a good Gen X’er, I walked around my high school with that patch on my backpack — red lettering, white backdrop, frisbee-size. A jock high school. It’s impossible to overstate the contempt I had for sports as a kid. I hated what I took to be phony puddle-deep camaraderie, the brain-dead monosyllabic mottos, the aggressive anti-intellectualism. More than that, there appeared to be a very specific cruelty to it. The way there were always a couple of kids who were always picked last. The collective bullying if someone didn’t measure up to the collective goals. And none of the teachers ever seemed to be as mean as the coaches. They strutted around like grown children, permanently transfixed by the ambitions of their adolescence, actively excluding the same kids they had mocked in their youth.
When I hear about sports stars who kill or commit suicide or generally behave antisocially, I always think: no wonder. In a culture that destroys your body and your mind, no wonder. It’s something of a paradox, of course, because, as we are repeatedly told, physical activity is often essential to psychological health. But why is it so rarely the other way around? I watch Cheer and I watch Killer Inside: The Mind of Aaron Hernandez and I watch former NBA star Delonte West get callously thrashed and I wonder why these athletes’ inner lives weren’t as prized as their motor skills. That’s not true; I know why. It suits a lucrative industry that shapes you from childhood to keep you pliable. And what makes you more pliable than mental instability? What better way to get a winning team than to have it populated with people for whom winning validates their existence and for whom losing is tantamount to death?
* * *
There’s a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment in the Hernandez doc when there’s an unexpected crossover with Cheer. A childhood photo of the late NFL star and convicted murderer flashes on-screen as we learn that his female cousins made him want be a cheerleader. It was the same for Cheer’s La’Darius Marshall, who is shown in one snapshot as a young cheerleader, having discovered the sport after hanging out with one of his childhood girlfriends. Both men came from dysfunctional backgrounds: Marshall’s mom was a drug user who ended up in prison for five years. He was sexually abused, not to mention beaten up by his brothers; Hernandez found his own mother distant, and he was also physically and sexually abused. Both found solace in sports, though Hernandez had the kind of dad who “slapped the faggot right out of you,” per one childhood friend, so he ended up in football, his dad’s sport, instead. But their similarities underscore how professional athletics, when so closely tied to a person’s sense of self, can simultaneously be a boon to your mental health and its undoing.
Killer Inside is a misnomer for a start. Everything pointed to Hernandez’s conviction for murdering another footballer (semipro linebacker Odin Lloyd) — or at the very least a fair amount of psychological distress. (I’m not certain why the doc chose to focus on his sexuality — besides prurience — as it seemed to be the least of his concerns.) As he said himself to his mom, who almost immediately replaced her dead husband with Hernandez’s cousin’s husband when he was just a teenager: “I had nobody. What’d you think I was gonna do, become a perfect angel?” The way he fled from his home straight into the arms of a University of Florida football scholarship, having wrapped up high school a semester early, is telling. Football made him somebody. He depended on being a star player because the alternative was being nothing — as one journalist says in the doc, at Florida you had to “win to survive.”
If the NFL didn’t know the depth of his suffering, they at least knew something, something a scouting service categorized as low “social maturity.” Their report stated that Hernandez’s responses “suggest he enjoys living on the edge of acceptable behavior and that he may be prone to partying too much and doing questionable things that could be seen as a problem for him and his team.” But his schools seemed to care more about his history of drug use than his high school concussion (his autopsy would later show chronic traumatic encephalopathy) or the fact that he busted a bar manager’s eardrum for confronting him with his bill. Physical pain was something you played through — one former linebacker described a row of Wisconsin players lining up with their pants down to get painkiller injections — and psychological pain was apparently no different. “It’s a big industry,” the ex-linebacker said, “and they’re willing to put basically kids, young men, in situations that will compromise their long-term health just to beat Northwestern.”
Cheerleading, the billion-dollar sport monopolized by a company called Varsity Brand, has a similarly mercenary approach. While the money is less extreme — the NFL’s annual revenue is more than $14 billion — the contingent self-worth is not. A number of the kids highlighted in Cheer had the kind of childhoods that made them feel like Hernandez, like they had nobody. Morgan Simianer in particular, the weaker flyer who is chosen for her “look,” radiates insecurity. Abandoned by both her parents, she was left as a high school sophomore in a trailer with her brother to fend for herself. “I felt, like, super alone,” Simianer said. “Like everyone was against me and I wasn’t good enough. I wasn’t important to anyone.” Though Marshall’s experience was different, his memories of growing up are almost identical to his fellow cheerleader’s. “I felt like I was really alone,” he said. “There was nobody that was gonna come save me.” Like Hernandez, sports was all they had.
And if a competitive sport defines you, then its coach controls you. Hernandez’s father, the ex-football heavyweight, was known as the King; Monica Aldama, the head coach on Cheer, is the Queen. Describing how she felt when Aldama remembered her name at tryouts, Simianer said, “It was like I’m not just nobody.” For her ability to literally pummel a bunch of college kids into a winning team in half the regular time, Aldama has been characterized as both a saint and a sinner. While she claims to be an advocate for the troubled members of her team, she fails to see how their histories skew her intentions — her position as a maternal figure whose love is not unconditional ultimately puts the athletes more at risk. Aldama proudly comments on Simianer’s lack of fear, while it is a clear case of recklessness. This is a girl who is unable to express her pain in any way sacrificing her own life (literally — with her fragile ribs, one errant move could puncture an organ) for the woman who, ironically, made her feel like she was worthy of it. “I would do anything for that woman,” Simianer confesses at one point. “I would take a bullet for her.” Jury’s out on whether Marshall, the outspoken outsize talent who regularly clashes with his team, would do the same. His ambivalent approach to Aldama seems connected to how self-aware he is about his own struggles, which affords him freedom from her grasp. After she pushes him to be more empathetic, he explains, “It’s hard to be like that when you are mentally battling yourself.”
That Cheer and Killer Inside focus on the psychological as well as the physical strain faced by athletes — not to mention that athletics have no gender — is an improvement on the sports industries they present, which often objectify their stars as mere pedestals for their talents. The Navarro cheerleaders and Hernandez are both helped and hurt by sports, an outlet which can at once mean everything and nothing in the end. This is the legacy of the 1994 documentary Hoop Dreams, which followed two teen NBA hopefuls and was as much about the intersections of race and class as it was about basketball. Not to mention OJ: Made in America, the 2016 ESPN miniseries that explored how the story of the football star and alleged murderer reflected race relations in the United States in the mid-’90s. Conversely, mainstream film and television continues to be heavily male when it comes to sports, focusing on individual heroics, on pain leading to gain — the American Dream on steroids. Cheer and Killer Inside expose this narrative for the myth it is, spotlighting that all athletes have both minds and bodies that break, that their legacies as human beings are not about what they have won but who they are. But the climate in which they’ve landed cannot be ignored either, a social-media marinated world in which sports stars are no longer just players but people who are willing to be vulnerable with their public, who are even further willing to sign their names next to their problems for The Players’ Tribune, the six-year-old platform populated by content provided by pro athletes. “Everyone is going through something,” wrote NBA star Kevin Love in an industry-shaking post in 2018. “No matter what our circumstances, we’re all carrying around things that hurt — and they can hurt us if we keep them buried inside.”
Fast-forward to that new video of former basketball pro Delonte West, the one of him having his head stomped on so hard in the middle of the street that I still wonder how he survived it. He also came from an underprivileged, unstable background. He chose the college he did for its “family atmosphere.” Like Simianer, he fixated on his failures and played with abandon. Like her, he also had trouble verbalizing his feelings, to the point that they would overflow (in anger for him, tears for her). Though he says he was diagnosed with a bipolar disorder, he considers his biggest problem to be “self-loathing.” But why? He was a sports star who signed a nearly $13 million contract in his prime — what better reason for self-love? A study published two years ago in the Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport, profiling the psychological well-being of 99 elite athletes, may provide an answer. The study found that those with high perfectionism, fear of failure, and performance-based self-worth had the highest levels of depression, anxiety, shame, and life dissatisfaction. Those with a more global self-worth that did not depend on their performance had the opposite outcome. As if to provide confirmation, a subsequent study published in Psychology of Sport and Exercise that same year revealed that athletes with contingent self-esteem were more likely to burn out. When sports become your only source of value, your wins ultimately don’t come to much.
* * *
The irony of all of this is that I came back to sports as an adult for my mental health. Obviously, I’m not an elite athlete — whatever the opposite of that is, I am. But having no stakes makes it that much easier to use physical activity for good. Nothing is dependent on it; that I’m moving at all is victory enough. But my circumstances are different. My jock high school was a private school, sports were (mostly) optional, and elite academics were where most of us found validation — and financial stability. “Conventional wisdom suggests that the sport offers an ‘escape’ from under-resourced communities suffering from the effects of systemic neglect,” Natalie Weiner writes in SB Nation. “If you work hard enough and make the right choices — playing football being one of the most accessible and appealing ways for boys, at least, to do that — you should be safe.” This reminds me of Aldama telling a room of underprivileged kids with limited prospects, “If you work hard at anything you do, you will be rewarded, you will be successful in life.” This is the American Dream–infused sports culture the media has traditionally plugged — the one, ironically, dismantled by the show in which Aldama herself appears. As Spike Lee tells a group of the top high school basketball players in the country in Hoop Dreams: “The only reason why you’re here, you can make their team win, and if their team wins, schools get a lot of money. This whole thing is revolving around money.”
In the same SB Nation article, which focused on how school football coaches combat gun violence, Darnell Grant, a high school coach in Newark, admitted he prioritized schoolwork, something both Cheer and Killer Inside barely mentioned. “My thing is to at least have the choice,” he said. Without that, kids are caught in the thrall of sports, which serves the industry but not its players. Contingent self-worth does the same thing, which is why mental health is as much of a priority as education. The head football coach at a Chicago high school, D’Angelo Dereef, explained why dropping a problematic player — which is basically what happened to Hernandez at U of F, where coach Urban Meyer pushed him into the NFL draft rather than taking him back — doesn’t fix them. “They’re not getting into their brains to figure out why,” Dereef told the site. “It’s like putting a Band-Aid on a big cut — that’s not going to stop the bleeding.” While the NBA was the first major sports league to address mental health in its collective bargaining agreement in 2018, in mid-January the WNBA signed its own new CBA, which only vaguely promised “enhanced mental health benefits and resources.” That the sports industry as a whole does not go far enough to address the psychological welfare of its players is to their detriment, but also to their own: At least one study from 2003 has shown that prioritizing “athletes’ needs of autonomy” — the opposite of contingent self-worth — as opposed to conformity, has the potential to improve their motivation and performance. In sports terms, that’s a win-win.

You do all the necessary stuff to get prepared and now you are about to hit some plyometric push ups.
You get down and you start. Your hands feel like explosive springs. You push with power and you explode off the ground, while in the air you swiftly move your hands and in a moments notice you hit 3 claps, one in front, one behind the back and one in the front before landing. Your repeat the same process for 7 more reps.
After resting for a while, you are ready to repeat the process.
You feel fast, explosive and powerful.
Nothing can stop you, you are an explosive beast!
How close to your current reality does this story seem to be?
Wouldn’t it be awesome if you could perform and feel the same way?
Well, doing so is totally achievable. In fact, you can even surpass the “image” portrayed above.
Even though many athletes dismiss calisthenics when it comes to developing explosiveness, becoming explosive using calisthenics is absolutely attainable.
With this post, I am going to show you how to do just that.
OTHER GREAT SOA ARTICLES:
Why Should Someone Train With Plyometrics?
But Todd I just want to achieve advanced calisthenics skills. Why should I train for explosiveness?
Your training has to be aligned to assist your goals and I agree with you that if you want to achieve only strength based calisthenics skill, you may as well not train with plyometrics exercises.
However, as you are going to see below there are a lot of calisthenics feats that rely heavily on explosiveness and there is no reason to disregard explosive feats over the strength based ones.
Other than that, here are some of the benefits that come with plyometric training.
Benefit #1: Increase Your Strength And Power
Since plyometric training is focused on increasing the rate of force development, explosive training is going to help you become stronger as well.
Furthermore, with plyometric training you will be training the fast-twitch fiber in your muscles, which is responsible for converting strength into speed. Long story short, plyometric training is going to increase your power.
Benefit #2: Become more athletic
The performance in almost every sport is based in explosiveness, power and speed.
From Olympic lifting to football, to basketball, to martial arts, to track events, top athletes have to display extraordinary amounts of explosiveness.
In all of these you have to display strength, change direction, jump, etc. in a moments time.
Training with plyometrics is going to help you develop these qualities and make you a better athlete overall.
Benefit #3: Boost Efficiency Of Neuromuscular System
This benefit is a byproduct of the first benefit.
Since you are training your body to apply strength fast, you are also training neuromuscular system to transmit signals more efficiently.
Benefit #4: It’s Fun And Prevents Boredom
Learning calisthenics skills is awesome, regardless if they are explosive or not.
Nonetheless, achieving explosive skills provides you with a different feeling than when achieving a strength based skill.
This difference can help you overcome boredom quite easily. Even just training with explosive movements is going to make you feel different.
Training, for example, for the butterfly kick (exercise #49), is going to feel way different than training for one arm push ups.
Some Cautions About Calisthenics Plyometrics
Regardless how awesome plyometric training might seem, you should always be very careful when training this way.
Plyometrics can be very hard on your joints and I would recommend to always practice with caution. When performing advanced exercises, like depth jumps, I would recommend to have a coach around.
If you are still a beginner, you shouldn’t train with plyometrics yet, as it’s so easy to injure yourself. Instead, focus on building a solid foundation before starting. Before considering doing serious plyometrics, it’s a good idea to be able to do the following:
30 push ups
50 squats
8 pull ups
If you don’t meet the necessary above criteria, spend more time on building your numbers.
How To Warm Up For Explosive Training
Warming up for explosive calisthenics is very similar to warming up for a regular workout.
The biggest difference is that before training with explosive calisthenics you should always warm up the joints that are going to take the impact of landing.
For plyometric push ups – warm up your wrists, elbows and shoulders.
For plyometric pull ups – warm up your elbows and shoulders.
For jumping – warm up your ankles, knees and hips.
Following a regular warm up is going to help you target most of the joints mentioned above, except the wrists. For your wrists warm up, I highly recommend you the handstand wrist preparation.
Based on the above a basic warm up before a plyometric workout may look like this:
A1: 3-5 min Wrist preparation
B1: 3-8 push ups B2: 3-8 pulling exercise (this can be brachiation, body rows, etc) B3: 5-10 squats/lunges
C1: 10 min skill work (optional)
Notes
Perform exercises B1 to B3 like a circuit, going from one to the next without rest. Repeat 3 times with 60 seconds rest in between rounds.
Your skill work shouldn’t be exhausting. For this reason, in this 10 minute period you should train mostly with balance exercises like handstand drills, frogstand variations, etc.
Plyometric Exercises
Below is a list of the best plyometric calisthenics exercises.
The exercises are categorized into three categories, based on the major muscle groups involved:
upper body exercises
lower body exercises
miscellaneous exercises
Based on their difficulty level, the exercises are going to be further divided into beginner, intermediate and advanced.

2019 Mercedes-Benz E220d Review, Price, And Release Date
New Post has been published on http://www.autocarnewshq.com/2019-mercedes-benz-e220d-review-price-release-date/
2019 Mercedes-Benz E220d Review, Price, And Release Date
2019 Mercedes-Benz E220d Review, Price, And Release Date – It appears to be the as soon as a standard of household motoring, the modest station wagon, is splitting into two appropriate channels. On the kept part, the ideal and analytic hemisphere if you will, are the powerful and purposeful sport-wagons. This is the home of the Audi RS6, Mercedes-AMG C63S, and Alpina B3. On the opposite side, where curiosity and adventure principle the roost, are the crossovers. A microscopic increased, a somewhat more rugged, a home for the Subaru Outback, Volvo Cross Country, Audi A6 Allroad, and this, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class All-Terrain.
2019 Mercedes-Benz E220d Future
For the most portion, although, it appears being a situation of one or the other, as most suppliers wear? Often focus on the midsection ground. There? No Liberty wagon, Audi has lowered the A6 Avant, some Volvo V90 has become late, and for the very first time because the introduction of the W123, Mercedes-Benz will not likely offer you a regular? Mercedes-Benz E220d. That’s correct, for three-directed star customers, it’s All-Landscape or practically nothing.
2019 Mercedes-Benz E220d Exterior And Interior
Mercedes-Benz E220d will come equally from the taller tires (275/45/20 rear and 245/35/20 front side) on large (standard) 20-inches tires, as well as the multi-holding chamber? Body Management? Air suspension. With the oxygen process, the E-Class can adapt its ride through 35mm of movements, providing soil clearance involving 121 and 156mm. That?s not exceedingly taller, which means that the wagon-like dynamics can be preserved, but also keeps off-road escapades within the smoother world. A further more benefit of the oxygen suspension is the power to handle the drive size despite a load on board, so you can go ahead and fill up that cavernous boot space. At the start, the now standard Mercedes-Benz E220d?Business? Cockpit nevertheless impresses, with the set of 12.3-” broad-screen Liquid crystal display panels and controls fitted feel pads. We keep having no trouble with glare or clarity of the screens, but the padding might be gradual to react, especially when your thumb-tips are even a bit moist or oily. It?s often quicker to handle the heart monitor utilizing the COMAND wheel, and just abandon the driver display to a establish choice. All the most recent Mercedes-Benz driver assistance, safety and infotainment goodies are fixed as standard, which includes adaptive vacation cruise handle with lane-retaining work, auto braking, nine safety Bags, DAB electronic stereo and the remarkable 360-degree camera method.
2019 Mercedes-Benz E220d Engine
This places the new 143kW/400Nm 2.0-litre turbodiesel less than the bonnet, and Mercedes-Benz’s constant AWD method and nine-pace 9G-Tronic automatic at the helm. And, you determine what? In a world of nearly unlimited selection, a ?this or practically nothing? Approach to the fill-lugging E works pretty effectively. As great as the six-tube dual-turbo E400 option was in the previous era E-Class wagon, most buyers went for the $107,900 E250 diesel, so the engine choice in the All-Landscape is a good idea. And provided that around 2700 GLE SUVs have been bought from 2016, against just 130-peculiar E-Class estates, tends to make the skew to an all surfaces All-Terrain exactly that little much more practical for these days SUV-centric market. We?d stick to the nut-dark brown interior of our photographed car and select possibly a straightforward polar bright white (no cost solution) to stability the compare of the wheel arches and cup roof structure solar panel. Thus we certainly have the ‘looking good’ component categorized, how can it drive? The 2.-litre diesel gives peak power at 3800rpm and all 400Nm of torque between 1600 and 2800rpm, supplying the All-Terrain decent performance away from the lighting and sufficient mid-range reply to construct rapidly around touring rates. In-equipment velocity from 80-100km/h, for the all-important country-street overtaking maneuver, can test the range of the diesel, and though it doesn’t offer the soft, smooth power of a six-tube, it can make a suitable career.
2019 Mercedes-Benz E220d Price And Release Date
Hell, even the new $99,900 Volvo V90 Cross Country helps make the Mercedes appear to be the best value, not to mention the $112,855 Audi A6 Allroad. The concern is not so significantly the premium competition, but the premise-ish types. Is the All-Ground 2 times the car the $54,990 Volkswagen Passat Alltrack is?
