I think the biggest thing that speaks to me about Veilguard is... I haven't touched it since I finished it.

Almost any game I've ever played that I've enjoyed, truly enjoyed, I've played at least twice if not more. It's actually a terrible habit of mine to have a bunch of saves that I haven't completed because I adore the game so much that I want to experience it over and over again.

Inquisition, Baldur's Gate 3, Destiny, Transistor, Skyrim, Stardew Valley, Witcher 3, I could keep going. The point is Veilguard couldn't deliver on the one thing that makes me love games and that's replayability. All the incentive of making a new character, making different choices, is gone because there's barely any choices to be made. So little reward for choosing a different companion to romance because the formula is the exact same for every single one. Restarting feels more like a struggle to the finish line. I dread the first six hours of gameplay because the dialogue is like nails on a chalkboard stale and stilted. I honestly dread character creation because the backstories are pretty much the same and I don't want to edit my Inquisitor and their choices every time. (Don't get me started on aesthetics.) The fact that the last three games I've sunk hundreds of hours into means NOTHING to Veilguard. That every beloved NPC from previous better games is reduced to whatever plot point serves the weak narrative.

What is there in Veilguard actually worth seeing again myself that I can't just watch a clip of on YouTube and be done with it? I look back at the roughly 80 hours it took for me to finish the game and think that I could've just made a new save on Inquisition and had a way better time. At the end of it all... I can't help but grieve for the game we could've had.

#ffxiv #concept #gpose #zenos yae galvus #adventurer zenos #poor adven!zenos #and his very fucked up esteem #(warrior and dark knight bby!- him being a berserker is as detrimental as it sounds- no matter how well he utilizes it)#berserker esteem but its the embodiment of everything his anhedonia made him bury away over the last 20 years #literally a mass of very volatile umbral aether and dynamis that became harder to control the more he has to confront it #it takes to the field and all you can hear is the most ragefilled guttural scream/roar ever #I don't think it'd be too much of a surprise that zenos despises the thing for a very long time #as a character I dont think there would be a bigger blow to his ego than something that literally shows:#him losing his carefully maintained control over himself-broadcasts what he's feeling-#-and makes him feel like he is the monster he was labeled as #and where others see it as a vaguely zenos shaped mass of shadow #his brain auto completes it to be anima- for very headcanon-y reasons lmfao #on the technical side this was very fun to make #and I have so many ideas for the shadow stuff I can do now that I have a better grasp of how ktisis' lighting works #next time ill hopefully be able to make a photo where the main subject isnt getting over exposed by the light source needed for the bg

i am such a big fan of when there's a radio in a podcast and the radio is sentient in some way. like yesss that is a Character!!!

it is maybe adjacent to my love of fictional AIs? but somehow distinct. possibly it's that these are a little more fantastical/cryptic in origin rather than like. purpose-built. also probably something about what radio specifically represents in terms of connections between people across space. idk

what is your favorite thing about charles and your favorite thing about erik? separately, as in what you like most about their characters :]

a devious question this one is, my friend!!! it's hard enough for me to explain my thoughts cohesively, but having to pick ONE thing i particularly love is difficult. with characters like charles and erik, theres been so much done with their characters over the decades and so they have so many components to them that make them so interesting and fun to observe. BUT I TRY FOR YOU TODAY. under the cut i kinda ramble and the size of this text box makin me anxious

i think if i were to be simple and broad, what i enjoy most about charles is his determination to help others, even if he isn't really thanked and/or if people don't even like him. ofc, this isn't to say he hasn't done wrong- to be honest, the fact he does wrong/questionable things at times is another aspect of him i really enjoy, maybe because- broadly speaking- he's meant to be altruistic (intent vs outcome and all that). i don't know if that's super exciting to most people, but it is for me

as for erik, my reason for liking him is easier to explain tbh. To Be Simple And Broad, his progression from villain to antihero over the decades has been fun to observe (as much as i have so far anyhow) and analyze. i think to be a bit more specific, him using his rage and pain as justifications for his villainous actions is definitely what compels me the most: hurt people hurt and the sort, an idea i've always found interesting (something something vicious cycles and the like). yet now, he recognizes this wasn't really. A Just Thing To Do and is beginning to change that, which i enjoy

Not to be a bitch on main, but I'm not a fan of them inventing new reasons for things that had already established lore attached to it? Like people don't know what they don't know obviously and this new TNT wasn't the one in charge back when Tormo's character was first made and all, but if you don't know a lore thing - say the reason behind a nickname - then...don't write about it..? and if you want the character to be a prankster, do that, but don't drag the nickname into it..? It's not a big deal technically and this is probably just a me problem, but if we're getting new lore™ then I'd prefer if it didn't contradict already existing lore, you know?

Can I just say that I wish, I really really wish, people would quit calling 20-24 year old characters "bad" or "childish writing" for literally just... ACTING THEIR AGE?!??! Doubly if they have a disability or are specifically coded to be autistic, adhd etc.

Seriously? Is someone out there seriously implying that everyone magically matures into a grizzled, emotionally constipated war veteran the second a 19 year old crosses the threshold into their noughties?

Think real damn hard on things you did when you were younger if you're older currently. We've ALL done cringe stuff that keeps us up until the wee hours of the morning in embarrassment. Whether it be something we said or clogging up someone's toilet, puking all over the place because we partied too hard or sent literal car parts flying because you were learning to drive. You don't just snap your fingers and BAM! YOU'RE MATURE! CUE THE CELEBRATIONS!

Maturity comes from life experiences, the good times, the cringe moments and the failures. Not age. Otherwise you wouldn't have kids/teens behaving way beyond their years due to ongoing and consistent abuse/neglect, nor childish adults trying to relive their teen years at their 'prime' at the very least.

I don't care if it's a fantasy game or if it's set in the future. If a character is 21/22 I *expect* random stupidity, foot in mouth moments. I expect them to be over confident or make poor decisions at times. That's prime time to be figuring your own identity out, making yourself standalone, supporting friends via learning from said mistakes and experiences they've had. It's not supposed to be smooth or perfect.
