pose practice; sketch dump [again]
expect more of this kind of stuff from me in the foreseeable future, mainly cuz ya home-thing has no motivation for anything else other than sketches but also since school is, well, a thing
Tumblr media
had to add a jojo reference for the good ole times;
ALL OF THE PICTURES/REFERENCED BELOW ARE GOTTEN FROM LINEOFACTION
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
these obviously are not the best... i've been trying to do figure drawing here and there for practice and have been getting some pretty sweet results!! but with this batch, nor was i trying to do all that well, nor was i in the mood to do well.... so uh yeah a lil bit bad and lazy but art nonetheless :D
criticism is welcomed, although i can already sense the main error i did here... i promise i work with shapes too okay
fun fact i didn't use a reference for the first one and it is my favourite one out of them all

Rainy Hello! I'm a big fan of your work and I've always wanted to ask if you have any tips on drawing poses and discovering art styles for beginners ❤️
Aww thank you!
Just a disclaimer: This is not an absolute guide, just something that works for me :D Long post below:
Poses: Before a pose, you should get a feel of the anatomy of a character, and to get to know the anatomy, you should know the shape that build them. Drawing by reference is the best way to improve, for example, from real life photos or site like posemaniacs or lineofaction. Also let it be known that I am an artbook hoarder, I collect art book from various artists and the more art you studied, the more you can get a grasp of anatomy, posing and dynamics. A thing to note if you are referencing from an artist, you should never just trace and call it a day. You should redraw it without tracing to train your art muscles. This is an example:

After you get the hang of it you may be able to skip the trace/red line stage entirely.
Also, plan your pose around your character design. For example, If your character has a huge cloak, you should take that into account and save yourself the grief of accidentally cover everything you painstakingly drew.
Be patient and if a pose doesn't work, you should move back to basic anatomy or change it entirely. I have lost count of how many poses I gave out because my skill is limited hahaha. Start small, don't challenge dynamic poses right away.
2. Art Styles: In my opinion, art style is a matter of 'preference'. I preferred drawing something this way, so I continue to draw it that way and hence it becomes my 'style'. So personally, I think one shouldn't focus on trying to discover their unique style, but to find their preference! A lot of artists' style change because their preference change! And merging an amalgamation of things you preferred, it becomes your style.

Needed to start doing studies again, so I figured I might as well use a new OC to get the ball rolling! This is my first art posted to this account I realize lol.
(LineOfAction referenced for the first and third sketch)

I think the most important thing is to approach w strong intent! Maybe you're trying to learn the angle of shoulders and hips, and just concentrate on that for a sesion. Or maybe you're trying to find good shapes, etc etc.
figure drawings can look pretty different depending on focus and the length of the pose
proko has a free figure drawing course that's a good place to start, but you can literally do anything with figure drawing. All it is is looking at bodies and drawing them, typically with a timer. I recommend non clothed, especially when starting out!
quickposes, lineofaction, and sketchdaily are online picture timers, but frankly I find their photo banks too small if you do regular figure drawing. Plus, one of the most valuable things out of traditional figure drawing is drawing the same model over and over-- if you can find a local figure drawing group in person I highly recommend! Otherwise, gesdrawparty on youtube is my preference (they have models in underwear, which works pretty well).
The other thing I find most helpful is to study the work of artists you like, preferably professionals. Do copies, analyze, apply it to your own work.
most importantly: do A LOT of figure drawing. As in thousands. Keep on going. It's effective because you fail quickly, often, and keep adjusting as you go.
