i’m in the process of sorting through my old file box to start moving things into a new filing cabinet. i came across this drawing i did in high school of the eyes of dr. tj eckleburg and couldn’t think of anyone else to share it with lol
Man, I feel like drawing those goddamn eyes is a rite of passage for everyone who first reads Gatsby as a teenager. There's like...no escaping it. Collective consciousness.

“Can freedom become a burden, too heavy for man to bear, something he tries to escape from?..Is there not also, perhaps, besides an innate desire for freedom, an instinctive wish for submission?” — Eric Fromm.

#fallforcostume day 19: fantasy, in this case, urban. I kinda want to bring back Dresden with some new jewelry, but he's not very recognizable so it's not a con priority. Maybe I should just do a shoot. 📷: Aubry Canales #harrydresden #thedresdenfiles #dresdenfiles #jimbutcher #literature #litgeek #book #books #detective #scifi #wizard #wizards #cosplay #cosplayer #borderlands #cosplayers #geek #nerd #art #artist #geekgirl #igers #instacosplay #cosplayersofinstagram #crossplay #urbanfantasy #fantasy (at Dragon Con) https://www.instagram.com/p/B3zYF_yjc54/?igshid=1vjxi7xumj0cd

I'm giving a lecture on Romantic poet Joanna Baillie on Friday... She's an amazing writer people don't read enough these days. And as she'll be sneaking onto my blog in a bit thought I'd get doodling. 📜 🖋️ 🎨 #doodles #art #artwork #portrait #poet #poetry #romantic #romanticism #joannabaillie #scottish #englit #bookstagram #bookgeek #litgeek #eighteenthcentury #female #feminist #feminism #reclaim #rediscover

I managed to buy a copy of the great gatsby because it made me think of your fics and the gay is real in this book. The very first thing nick says about Gatsby is that he's gorgeous. So much gay! Im going as a flapper for Halloween to honor the book.
Good evening, anon!  I’m assuming you mean it made you think of my Great Gatsby fic in particular, although if it made you think of my fic in general, I’m just as pleased (Fitzgerald’s prose = LIFE GOALS).  Seriously, it’s true: the gay in that novel is profound.  The subtext surrounding Nick Carraway isn’t so much subtext as, er, artful understatement (see: the Mr. McKee scene in Chapter 3).  Your Halloween plans sound fantastic.

It’s not exactly the same, but this reminds me of the current, parallel attitude in fandom that transformative works written more than 5-10 years ago are bound to be terrible. Many folks are actively surprised when they read a story from, say, 2004 that they end up finding worthwhile. Speaking as a marginalized educator, published writer, and fan creator, these phenomena fill me with dread. There are approaches to teaching classics that both contextualize their social/cultural faults and demonstrate why they’re still highly relevant. However, those in control of educational systems at all levels actively do their best to keep those of us who teach classic lit through appropriate critical lens(es) out of full-time and tenure-track positions. We’re lucky if we can even get sporadic work as substitutes and/or adjuncts, and our perspectives are ridiculed. Dismissing literary history leads to ruin; we’ve seen this before, but we never learn from it.
these shitty "literature hot takes" on twitter are giving me a fucking aneurysm. "nobody should read books older than 100 years old" is easily the most idiotic knee-jerk reaction I've ever heard of but everyone is eating it up because nobody wants to be intellectually challenged by anything more difficult than harry potter

“Crowley has nightmares” is such a prevalent headcanon that I literally forgot it just wasn’t in the book. It’s like everyone simultaneously was like well of Course he’d have nightmares, obviously,
Between the not-having-really-meant-or-wanted-to-Fall and such classics as taking one look at the Spanish Inquisition and getting drunk for a week, it’s something of a no-brainer.  Crowley’s constitution doesn’t withstand trauma terribly well, and his hallmarks of being a) fiercely emotional and b) an anxious wreck are firmly established in the novel.  It’s little wonder we reached a fandom-wide conclusion quite a long time ago!
queerdove said: there’s really Something to me about his inherent optimism and enjoyment of life that even through the traumas he enjoys sleeping and does it anyway even tho as you say it’s totally incomprehensible that he wouldn’t have nightmares 💙
The fact that he loves sleeping and does it anyway in spite of having nightmares is just...wow, I don’t even know.  That is Peak Crowley if ever I saw it.

The next Dresden Files book comes out on July 14th and I can't decide what edition to buy. I have the whole series in paperback but it's only coming out in hardcover and ebook. Maybe buy the ebook and then get the paperback for my collection when it comes out? 📷: Aubry Canales #harrydresden #thedresdenfiles #dresdenfiles #jimbutcher #literature #litgeek #book #books #detective #scifi #wizard #wizards #cosplay #cosplayer #borderlands #cosplayers #geek #nerd #art #artist #geekgirl #igers #instacosplay #cosplayersofinstagram #crossplay #urbanfantasy #fantasy (at Dragon Con) https://www.instagram.com/p/B7Tg5bvjrEX/?igshid=cy8naahypgdf

...he’s not so much kidnapped by them as he WILLINGLY GOES WITH THEM IN THE MIDST OF THE ATTACK because he knows he can use his status as leverage, quid pro quo. I’ve always wondered if Old Hamlet was chill with their ilk, sort of looking the other way on whatever racket the pirates had going around the Baltic as long as he profited somehow.
(Yes, I spend way too much time thinking about this play.)
the most important thing to know about the plot of hamlet is that it’s so convoluted that the main character is kidnapped by pirates and it’s not even really a major plot point

i like the book good omens and the mini series. is that bad? does that say anything about me as a person?
All it does is speak to your individual circumstances.  Did you see the miniseries first, or did you read the book first?  Did you watch and read concurrently?  Whatever the order or interspersing of your discoveries, all it really says is what you just stated: that you like both.

Hi (this is Tezca from the CoT server btw) I just got curious after reading one had the recent posts about GO you made, what were the glaring differences then between the book boys and the tv boys? I already seen some write about it months ago but I forgot what they were except that Book Crowley was the one that figured out the location and actually went to Tadfield instead of a pub first. I dunno if that right, haven’t gotten to that part of the book yet
My first impulse as I read your ask was to do a detailed write-up, but when I got to the end and saw that you’re in the process of reading the book, that gave me pause. You’re going to spot the differences soon enough. Broadly speaking, the major ones are that the show rendered Aziraphale far less hard-edged than he’s capable of being when push comes to shove, and it rendered Crowley as…more callous is not quite it. He suggests some things in the show that, per the book, he would never suggest in a million years (like that the Antichrist should be killed; in the book, that is squarely Aziraphale’s idea and initiative). Crowley bringing the dove Aziraphale kills back to life is absent in the show, too. It’s a number of what I see as intensely crucial moments, which speak to their intrinsic character, that are absent or altered beyond recognition in the show.
