The digital sculpt was prepped for printing on the ender3’s we have in uni. In zbrush I split the model visor into 3 sections and the main helmet in half using live Boolean. I then used Boolean to add and subtract key shapes from the pieces so when they came out they would hopefully fit together perfectly. Practice 1: 3D Printing - Direction and Technical Development

- Practicing 3D -

This week we where challenged to create an object suitable for 3D printing. I had several ideas as to what I wanted to create however, all of them would require the use of Zbrush to achieve the sculpting techniques I was interested in. Fortunately, we where also presented the option of practicing 3D. So I decided to take the week to research and try to learn some of Zbrush's core functions and techniques, and hopefully managing to create something presentable by the end of the week!

- Learning Zbrush -

Upon first inspection of this program I was overwhelmed with all of the features, and the interesting camera controls... Resorting to YouTube to help I found an incredibly useful introductory tutorial created by the artists from the Flipped Normals YouTube channel.

Aptly titled "Getting Started with Sculpting - Zbrush for Beginners Tutorial" Former Senior character artists Henning Sanden and Morten Jaeger very efficiently and effectively explain the basic controls, frequently used tools and a few tips and tricks to help users get started.

I found this tutorial incredibly helpful, allowing me to jump straight into the program after just an hour of learning. Morten and Henning do a fantastic job of keeping it interesting and informational, with no unnecessary filler content.

Once I'd gotten the hang of the controls I started playing around with the different brushes Zbrush has to offer, creating weird and hideous blobs, including this little guy:

Obviously I still had a little way to go in terms of skill...

So I decided to purchase a tutorial from the Artstation marketplace, to help with direction and learning, as much as the cloud blobs where fun, it was not helping.

"Zbrush 2022 Hard Surface Sculpting for Beginners" created by Nexttut Education was my next step to tackle this daunting program. The tutorial covers more intermediate features of Zbrush including:

Zmodeler

LiveBooleans

Polygroups

Retopology

Decimation

and more...

This tutorial series helped gain a deeper understanding of how to create and sculpt hard surface models inside Zbrush, and the different tools that benefit these workflows.

- Moving forward -

A lot of learning for one week, only beginning to climb the mountain that is Zbrush. However, I now have a better understanding as to they 'hype' around the program, as the potential of the tools is incredible, and I can see how artists are able to create such amazing details in their high-poly assets, which would not be easy to achieve using more traditional modelling techniques.

I plan to keep improving my skills and learning new techniques with Zbrush, and hope to utilise them in one of my two further development projects.
