their names are whistlewing (silver, she/her), and shardpelt (brown, he/him)

Whistlewing was first a kittypet named Whistle who lived in an operating station just down the line. She lived with her brother Horn and spent her first nine moons taking tickets and getting fed table scraps when she shouldn’t’ve been eating them. Then the stationmaster died of natural causes and a man who didn’t take too kindly to cats got the new job. Horn left the station whenever he came but Whistle decided to give him a chance. One broken beer bottle and a very angry firing of a driver later, Whistle was running down the line. She didn’t know how to get out any other way.

Shardpelt was born in RuinClan alongside two sisters, Lockkit and Brasskit, born to Oiltail and an unknown father. Brasskit got very cold and sick one night and the next morning wasn’t there to play with her siblings. So Shardkit and Brasskit became ‘paws without their sister alongside them. Oiltail forced distance, and Shardpaw wondered why his mother suddenly cared for him so little. Brasspaw had a dream to be head diplomat, maybe even leader, and Shardpaw got pushed away from her, too.

Shardpaw decided that if his family stopped caring about him, he would make them. He was going to tame himself a Guardian.

So he snuck out of the territory and headed down the line. It didn’t take long for a Guardian to find him. It took just as little time for Shardpaw’s right leg and tail to get caught under a wheel and get torn straight off. The Guardian realized what it had done and started to run backwards from the scene. But it running didn’t help Shardpaw, his life slowly bleeding out of him.

As luck would have it, Shardpaw was found by a very pretty, half-starved kit no older than himself. Whistle knew she couldn’t take him back to her station, the stationmaster would just put him out of his misery rather than help, so she helped him waddle against her shoulder and started walking further down the line.

Shardpaw told her that down the line were some ruins, and behind the ruins, four groups of cats lived, and they would help him. Whistle thought that was just the kind of environment she needed, and helped Shardpaw along. They passed the ruins and Whistle accidentally kicked a rock, which startled a mouse, which got them found by a very angry hunting patrol. Brasspaw was on the patrol and, seeing what happened to her brother, had to take him back to RuinClan and get him healed, Whistle included.

The leader wasn’t very happy about Whistle being around, but LightClan knows Shardpaw just wouldn’t leave her side. The medicine cat stopped the bleeding, but Shardpaw’s leg and tail were long gone. Shardpaw was still in disbelief that a Guardian would do this.

“What do you mean Guardian, it’s a train.”

Shardpaw felt his heart live up to his name at that very moment. This cat who saved his life didn’t think Guardians were their sworn protectors, there to keep them in line and provide their rescources so they could live, she thought they were just trains.

“Who are you, anyway?!”

“Whistle.”

Shardpaw blinked. Whistle?

“You’re names what?” Shardpaw sat up to the best of his ability, “After a Guardian’s shriek of pain?”

“Shriek of pain?” Whistle repeated, blinking in surprise, “Oh, I’d feel so bad ruining the illusion for you.”

But Shardpaw still couldn’t tear himself away from Whistle. Whistle was the cat bringing him food, Whistle was the cat who saved his life. But he couldn’t talk to her, not after that.

Brasspaw, now Brasspelt, told him to stop being a fink and accept that different cats have different believes, so Shardpaw did. And he fell head-over-heels in love with her. He watched in awe as Whistle was reluctantly given an apprentice name- Aluminumpaw.

“Uh,” Whistle mewed, “Aluminumpaw’s a fine name, but IIIIIIII’d really like to stay Whistle, I’ll take Whistlepaw.”

“A whistle is a Guardian’s cry of pain, and I will not have a cat in my clan boasting that name.”

Whistle shifted her paws, “Uh, no, actually! I used to live around active... uh... Guardians, whistles are cries of joy!” She dipped her head further down, nearly touching her paws, “Please. My brother’s name was Horn. I can’t let myself forget him, we were always horns and whistles.”

So she was reluctantly named Whistlepaw and was placed under the mentorship of Brasspelt. Shardpaw was sure she’d never fall in love with him, not after his outburst, but Whistlepaw always was full of surprises.

They were named Whistlewing and Shardpelt, and declared their official mateship. They tried to have kittens, but unfortunately for them, Whistle had blocked her spaying out of her memory. But they always discussed kit names, and if they ever had twins, they had their names already set: Hornkit and Lockkit.

After Buttonstar became leader, they figured they’d been serving long enough. Shardpelt felt twice as old after the loss of his leg, so they retired to the elder’s den where they wait for Lockkit, Horn or Brasspelt to visit them.
