Freak Like Them
Summary: Anthony Lockwood x Fe!Reader -> You haven't spoke to your parents in years, and have never once mentioned them. One day, they decided to come and see you.
Disclaimer: This is more of a Lockwood and Co Platonic thing though I guess something could be shown as 'romantic'...kinda. Not proof read. Terrible parents, abandonment, shitty parents though some 'redeemed'. Swearing, angst, tears, found family kinda stuff.
You had been frantically running about all day, cleaning.Â
Whilst Lucy (tried) to eat her toast in peace, there you were, cloth in hand, taking her unfinished plate from her.Â
âHey!â
Lucy watched you for a further moment before saying; âDo you mind?â
âCanât have a mess. Theyâll already find things to comment on.â
âThey?â
âDo you know who sheâs talking about?âÂ
âNo clue.â
âWhen did she even wake up?â George asked whilst himself, Lockwood and Lucy watched as you cleaned yet another already clean kitchen countertop.Â
â5, I think. She was up before me.â Lockwood stated.Â
You had actually been awake since 4, but figured you better start cleaning from 5. It gave you time to wake up, get ready and make sure the whole house was spotless before they came.Â
âAlso, whoâs they?â
âThey?â
âShe said, âtheyâ didnât she?â Lucy asked, leaning into the duo.Â
âThey are my parents.â
âWhat?â
âMy parents.â you stopped for a moment to look at all three of them huddled together at the end of the table. âThey called me last week saying they were coming down for a visit. Only, I completely forgot until last night and now nothing is clean and I donât know what to do to avoid them saying something.â
âBut I thought your parents didnât like you being-â
âAn Agent?â you finished Lockwoodâs question. âThey didnât. Probably still donât. I get a postcard from them every year but other than that, I donât hear from them. And then, out of the blue they called.â
âAnd you forgot?â
âWell,â you sighed, looking at George. âI was a little busy trying to stop you three from committing an accidental murder in the Winkleman case last week.â
George remained silent.Â
âEither way, theyâre coming today and I still havenât finished-â
Lockwood stated your name. âThe house is spotless. In fact, it hasnât been this cleanâŠever.â
âI know, but I just need today to go well.â
âWhy?â George asked, before realising he probably should have remained silent in his questioning.Â
George and Lucy didnât know much about your parents, just that you had to have some somewhere. Lockwood knew a little more, but still not much. He knew why you came to London all those years ago. He knew why you left them and why they told you to leave, but other than that, he knew nothing more.Â
You refused to talk about them.Â
Anytime family came up in a conversation, youâd steer the conversation onto another topic or deflect it onto somebody else. Youâd do it subtly but the others were slowly picking up on it.Â
âPlease,â you begged. âJustâŠhelp me make sure today goes well and then theyâll go home and we can get back to normal.â
Neither of the trio knew what they were getting themselves in for when it came to your parents, and it would be too late for them to escape by the time they turned up at the front door.Â
George had made dinner that night, making sure to follow the recipe you gave him, to a T. Especially since it was your parentsâ favourite meal and if he did it well, which you doubted he wouldnât, then they would accept George and be kind with him.Â
That just left trying to get Lucy and Lockwood on their good side.Â
So, when the doorbell rang, Lockwood greeted them at the door, offering to take their coats.Â
Your mother thanked him and mentioned to her husband, your father, how kind he was.Â
So Lockwood was in their good books so far, untilâŠ
âAh, my dear.â
Your mother spotted you as you came out of the kitchen and into the hallway. She took both of your hands in hers and kissed the air around your cheeks.Â
âCouldnât greet us yourself?â
âSorry, mum. I was just-â
âNevermind. Thereâs always another chance. Are those-â
âGarlic potatoes? Yes. I gave George the recipe. Heâs an amazing cook.â
âSo are you, dear.â your mother told you. âI should know. I paid for the lessons.â
You could do nothing more than smile and nod before looking at your dad. âHi, dad.â
âMunchkin, how is my little girl?â
âGoo-â
âSheâs well, dear. Canât you see? Nevermind that. Show us around. Weâd like to see how our daughter is surviving after all.â
Your mother forced her way into the living room, your dad following her call whilst you remained outside the room for a short moment to take a breath.Â
âAre you-â
You nodded quickly at Lockwood, âIâm fine. Can you help Lucy finish the table?â
Lockwood nodded, his gaze wandering into the living room for a second before giving you a slight smile and heading into the kitchen.Â
Letting go of your forced breath, you entered the living room to find your mother judging every corner she could of the room.Â
âFor London, I would have thought the rooms would be bigger.â
âWell, they are. Weâve just rearranged the furniture to make it cosier for the colder months.â
âAnd how long do you spend the day being lazy here.â
âWell, weâre not actually in here all that-â
âNo need to lie to your mother, dear. I know you can be hard working when you want to be, but I also know children your age.â
Your mother wandered over to the fireplace before rubbing her finger over the top of it.Â
She hummed, and not in a good way. It was moreâŠdisappointment.Â
âYou havenât polished, I see. I can see now where we come on your scale of importance.â
âMum, listen-â
âWould anyone like anything to drink?âÂ
You made a mental note to hug Lucy as tight as you possibly could, later.Â
Your motherâs face lit up. âOh, my goodness. You must be Miss Carlyle. I have heard so much about you. All from the papers, of course. Our daughter tells us nothing. Arenât you much prettier in person? Perhaps one day you girls can have a talk over make-up. Perhaps you could teach my daughter a couple of things about presentability.â
Lucy didnât know how to respond.Â
Usually, sheâd fire back a snarky comment, but this was your mother.Â
And only now was she beginning to understand the reasons why you didnât talk about them all that much.Â
Lockwood appeared behind Lucy for a moment. âDinner is ready, if youâd like to take a seat in the kitchen.â
Your mother smiled at Lockwood and dropped Lucyâs hands.Â
âThat will be wonderful, Son.â your father replied before all five of you made your way into the kitchen to see George.Â
The food was plated up perfectly, everything smelled just like how it did at home.Â
âMismatched plates, how veryâŠcute.â
You knew your mother didnât mean that as a compliment.Â
âThis all looks lovely, George.â your father told him before digging in. âMy god! The potatoes, how did you-â
âI added a little bit of milk along with some spices left over from the chicken.â
Your father began telling your mother about how they should try and cook it like that when they got home, but your mother was more focused on you and your fellow Agents.
âSo, tell me Lucy. When did you become an Agent?â
âW-When I wasâŠeightâŠI think?â
âI remember the papers. It was awful what happened to those children. But that wasnât your fault.â
Lucy didnât know what to say, other than to nod and say an awkward, âThank you.â
âMum, can we please not talk about this?â
âIâm only asking a question, dear. Donât attack me because you donât like me wanting to get to know your friends.â
âI wasnât-â
âDonât talk back, dear. You know how I feel about you talking back.â
The room went silent for a moment before your father coughed and looked at you.Â
âHow has the life of an Agent been treating you? Iâm sure youâve all got some strange stories youâd like to tell?â
âDear, she just said she didnât feel like talking about it.â
âNo, itâs okay.â you felt a little spark of joy when hearing your father wish to talk about your job.Â
âOh, so he can talk about it, but I canât? Well,â your mother threw down her fork. âAll I wanted was to spend time with my daughter and her friends and now suddenly Iâm the villain but heâs the saint for asking questions.â
âMum, I never-â
âI have a story!â George piped up.Â
All eyes turned to him and he swallowed nervously before telling his story about a case you were all working on a few months ago.Â
By the end of the story, you could have sworn your dad had pride in his eyes when looking at you.Â
Your mother, however, was a different case entirely.Â
âSo you just went after them like that?â
âI was saf-â
âIf they ran into a burning building, would you follow them? I understand you wish to prove yourself, but didnât you have a good job there?â
You nodded. âI did, but I-â
âSheâs happy now,â your father tried to explain lovingly. âAnd thatâs all that matters-â
âYes, yes, Dear. So, Anthony, tell me about yourself.â
The following 40 minutes passed in a similar fashion. Your mother asking questions, people answering and then her making a comment about you. Then, your father tried his best to support you.Â
Even if he didnât support you when you decided to move to London to join Lockwood and Co, he was supporting you now. He seemed proud, even. But your mother didnât.Â
âDid I tell you the story about when she decided she wanted to be an agent?â
You worried but continued to smile. It started out like a nice story.Â
âShe was 14, and just got home from her maths tutors. I paid in full too, so no refund either.â
Oh, no.
âDear, perhaps we donât have to-â your father tried interrupting but it was no use. Your mother carried on and so, your father placed his hand gently on your arm whilst your focus remained on your mother, however your other hand found his and gave it a gentle squeeze.Â
This didnât go unnoticed by the trio who then endured the story your mother told everyone.Â
âCan you believe that, my little girl, deciding to become an Agent instead of seaking her talents in-â
âWhy donât we move onto dessert?â your father announced, turning his attention to George who seemed to visibly give a sigh of relief.Â
âYes, Lucy will you-â
âOn it.â
Lucy led everyone into the living room with Lockwood, although yourself and your dad held back for a moment.Â
âIâm so sorry, Munchkin. I told her not to-â
âItâs okay, dad.â
âItâs-â
You took his hand on your arm again. âItâs okay, dad.â
As your dad followed Lucy and Lockwood and your mother into the living room, you let out a controlled breath and beside you, you saw a beer bottle.Â
âNot yet. If she smells it on me, sheâll hit the roof.â
âMaybe it will get her out quicker.â
âDonât tempt me.â
âAre you sure youâre okay?â
You remained still, your gaze fixed on the door. âNo. But it canât be that long until she leaves. Keep that on ice for me?â
âIn the hidden corner of the fridge already.â
âThanks, George.â
Being careful of your steps, you made your way into the living room where you found your mother in the middle of another story.Â
Lucy was pouring your dad a drink meanwhile, Lockwood looked at you for a moment, giving a silent questioning look.Â
âAre you okay?âÂ
You gave a small nod and sat on the arm of the chair beside your dad, listening to another story that your mother told people. All that flashed across your mind was the amount of times you cried yourself to sleep in the nights after a dinner party where she provided people with evidence of what a disappointment you were to her then.Â
God only knows what she tells them now.Â
âOh, please, tell me how my dear daughter is working in your fine establishment?â your mother asked, sitting on the edge of her seat. âAnd donât worry, I know sheâs not perfect. You can be honest in your review.â
Lockwood stuttered for a moment, understanding full well that when your mother said âsheâs not perfectâ, she didnât mean it to be everyone is imperfect but rather you wereâŠterrible.Â
âSheâs doing very well. Sheâs one of the bestâŠany of us have ever worked with.â
âYouâre kidding! Oh, my dear.â your mother was laughing, with tears. âOh, how cute. Dear, did you pay him to say that?â
âWait a minute-â Lockwood was about to say something but then your mother looked at her watch.Â
âItâs getting late, we should go. Come on, dear.â
Your mother stood and thanked everyone, not once making eye-contact with you, before ushering her husband into the hallway.Â
âWhat the-â
âNot yet, Luce.â you whispered.Â
However, as you stood and walked down the hall, you saw your mother fussing over your fatherâs coat whilst he tried to stop her.Â
âWhatâs going on?â
Something in your gut told you what she was fussing over wasnât his coat, but rather something she would get off her chest and your father was trying to stop her.Â
âNothing, Munchkin.â
âWe think you should come home.â
Lockwood, Lucy and George sprang into the hall when they heard your mother.Â
âWhat?â
âJust until you get better.â
âBetter?â
âClearly you paid Mr Lockwood to say that about you. I am your mother after all, I should know when your boss is lying.â
âI wasnât-â
âWhy should I come home? This. This place. This is my home. Itâs been more of my home than a house with you has ever been.â
âNo need to be spiteful, dear.â
âJust stop it!â
âSee, look, sheâs making me the villain again-â
âEnough!â you shouted out. âCanât you see Iâm happy here? I love my job and I love these people. I understand you donât like the fact that you canât say to your friends that Iâm some fancy accountant doing peoples taxes until three oâclock in the morning, but it should be enough for you that I am happy. I am doing a job I love and I have people that I love.â
âI told you she was happy-â
âHow can she be? Sheâs going to be a freak, just like the rest of them!â
âThat is enough!â your dad raised his voice. âShe has a point. It should be enough that sheâs happy and sheâs in a job she loves. Maybe we didnât agree in the beginning, but it wasnât something worth losing our daughter over! And sheâs not a freak. These children are not freaks. They are talented, incredible human beings who shouldnât have been brought into a world of fear, but are making the most of life all the same. I donât care what she does. What I care about is knowing who she is. What I care about is if she is happy. Not if your friends and their old minds are satisfied over the stories you tell them. We havenât seen her in almost three years and you canât take a few hours to be kind and proud of her! I am not going another three years without seeing our daughter.â
âSo what are you saying? Are you staying here?â
âIâm saying either realise what you could lose, or I leave.â
âExcuse me?â
âYou heard me. Either change or I leave. And I move down here with her and we donât see you ever again.â your father looked back to you where he found you looking at him with tears in his eyes. âIâm sorry, Munchkin. It should have taken me this long.â he turned back to your mother. âShe was brave enough to make the choice three years ago, and now Iâm making it, too. So?â
You and your father waited, watching as your mother stood shocked at your fatherâs words before turning to look at you.Â
âYouâll regret it. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow. But you will.â
âNo, I wonât.â
Then she turned back to your father. âIâll be at Janiceâs if you need me.â
âGoodbye, Dear.â
Your mother did nothing other than turn around and close the door behind her.Â
âIâm so sorry, Munchkin. I should have said something sooner. Much, much sooner.â
âItâs alright.â
âItâs not. But I will spend the rest of my days trying to make it up to you.â
âAre you really sure you want to live in London?â
Your father paused for a split second. âMaybe a few minutes outside of London.â
You laughed a little, and so did he. âIâm getting a little too old for city life.â
You stood, looking at him for a moment before hugging him. âThank you.â
âI love you, Munchkin. And I am sorry.â
âI love you, too.â
The following fifteen minutes were spent trying to get your father to consider staying for the night, but he eventually convinced you that he would be okay in a local hotel room - especially since he had a discount from work.Â
As the door closed behind him, you locked it shut and as you turned around, Lucy came running over and hugged you.Â
âItâs a shit deal.â
âThanks, Luce. Please tell me George has my beer-â
âRight here.â
âYouâre an angel.â
âWas she always like that?â Lockwood asked.Â
You swallowed your beer with a nod. âIt was a little easier in the beginning, butâŠyeah. Always.â
âAnyone for donuts?â George asked when a short moment came over all of you.Â
âYes.â
âPlease.â
As Geroge and Lucy left towards the kitchen, Lockwood pulled you back.Â
âAre you sure youâre okay? Because that wasâŠâ
You touched his hand that loosely held yours. âIâm okay.â
Lockwood looked like he wished to say something more, so you waited.Â
âIfâŠif there comes a day, when youâre not. Promise youâll come to me? That youâll talk to me.â
âI promise, Lockwood.â

Punch At First Sight
Summary: Anthony Lockwood x Fe!Reader -> You and Lockwood have met a few times before, however after a punch to the face for the third time, Lockwood, which a push from Lucy, decides to make things different.
Disclaimer: Multiple uses of the f-word. Mentions of accidental violence, ghosts, Kipps being a dick, a slap across the face. Fluff, angst, hints of jealousy, and Lucy giving Lockwood a needed talking to. Not Proof Read.
It was meant to be an easy case.Â
A couple of type ones haunting an abandoned building just outside of London. The local ghost hunters had all created that big of a myth they had scared themselves away. And the cost of a Fittes agent was too high of a price for the type of ghosts they had. So, Lockwood and Co were the business chosen.Â
Only, it would have been nice to know if one of the previous agents had reached out to an old friend to take care of the job as well.Â
But, no.Â
Instead, whilst listening out for the ghosts, Lockwood stepped around a corner and when getting ready to attack what he thought was a ghost, he was met with a punch to the face and then a voice calling out; âOh my god, youâre human.â
âDo you make a habit of punching ghosts?â
Then, through watered eyes, he saw the outline of the person who had punched him and it seemed she had clear enough vision in the dark to recognise him.Â
âLockwood?â
âWait.â he knew that voice. âY/n?â
âHoly crap. I am so sorry. Are you okay? Wait. Why are you even here?â
âThe same as you, Iâm guessing. Unless you tend to sneak into abandoned buildings at two in the morning.â
âSophie didnât even tell me they hired someone else. Are you sure youâre alright?â
Lockwood managed to stand up straight this time just as Lucy and George came running round the corner.Â
âWe heard a scream.â
âWhatâs going on?â
George looked from Lockwood to you. âY/n?â
âHi, George.â
âWhat are you doing here?â
âNice to see you, too.â
âShe was hired.â Lockwood explained just before Lucy spotted him.Â
âHoly crap, are you okay?â
Lockwood nodded. âJust a little stunned.â
âI really am sorry.â
âWe really have to stop meeting like this.â Lockwood said, with a slight smile as he looked at you.Â
Then came a scream.Â
âConsidering weâre all here and considering no-one else was hired to do this job-â George began.Â
âThat wasnât a human.â Lucy finished.Â
âAnd since weâre here with minimal weapons.â
One of the ghosts, a woman, came floating through a wall and turned to look at them.Â
âRun?â you offered.Â
âRun.â Lucy replied.Â
Making a break for it, you all tried to outrun the ghost before another one of her friends joined her, pushing all four of you down a different corridor.Â
âIâm Lucy, by the way.â
âY/n. Nice to meet you.â
âYou, too.â
By the time the sun was beginning to rise over the city, you all made it back to Portland Row where a fresh bruise had made its way to decorate Lockwoodâs face.Â
âYou have a hell of a punch.â Lockwood said before prodding his own bruise in his reflection of the pan on the stove.Â
You chuckled, pulling a bag of peas from the freezer before closing it and walking over. âQuit moaning. It could have been worse. Here.â
Standing, Lockwood seemed to have grown even taller than you. Taller than when youâd both last met.Â
Looking at you, you watched as his eyes closed at the cold contact of the bag as you pressed it to his face.Â
âHold it there for a while. It should help with the swelling.â
âYou know, we really need to stop meeting like this.â
You narrowed your gaze a little and clicked your tongue. âYouâve already used that line.â
âHave I?â Lockwood seemed to think for a moment before, âOh, yeah. Suppose I have. But it is true.â
âHey, the first time was an accident. I thought you were trying to-â
âThe first time is an accident, three times is a pattern.â
You smiled sheepishly. âAn accidental pattern.â
âSure about that?â
âYes.â you said before, âMaybe? Can never be too careful when hunting alone.â
Lockwoodâs demeanour changed for a moment. âAlone? Youâre hunting alone again?â
âRelax. Iâm safe enough.âÂ
You moved backwards and began to tidy the kitchen a little to give yourself something to do whilst Lockwood leaned back against the kitchen counter, lowering the frozen bag from his face so he could watch you more closely.Â
âAre you?â
âYes, Lockwood. Iâm fine. Honestly, you donât have to worry about me.â
âDoesnât mean I wonât.â
You held his gaze for a moment, a million thoughts running through your head until it landed on Heâs just a friendâŠ
From there, you shifted yourself from the kitchen table and placed the empty glasses in your hand in the sink beside him.Â
âMove here.â
âWhat?â
Lockwood stood tall once more and turned to face you properly. âMove in here. Lucy got a deal when she bought her bed, so sheâs got a second one spare. We can set it up on the other side of the loft. I donât like the thought of you hunting alone.â
âLockwood, I said Iâm fine.â
âWhat happens if something happens to you? Look, I can put you on the payroll so it wonât be a favour. Youâll be working with us. And youâll have a team behind you. Youâll also be safe. Please.â
âLockwood-â
âPlease.â
Looking up at him, you saw the desperation in his eyes.Â
It wasnât often he opened himself up or let himself show any kind of vulnerability but when he didâŠ
âOkay. Fine. But you canât hover over me.â
âI donât hover.â
âYou hover.â
âNo I donât.âÂ
âWhy did George kick you out of the Archive room in the last case we were in together?â
Lockwood thought back and when he didnât answer, you answered for him.Â
âBecause you hover.â
âOkay, maybe I hover a little.â
âBut before anything is written, the others have to agree. Lucy, too.â
âShe will. I know so. Itâll be nice for her to not be outnumbered.â
You moved in three days later.
Lucy had prepared the spare bed for you and even decorated the walls behind your bed with a couple of pictures she found in some old boxes that had yourself, George and Lockwood in them.Â
âI didnât know what youâd want to do, but I thought I would do something to help at least.â
âI love it.â you smiled, dropping one of the boxes onto your bed. âThank you.â
Over the following week, yourself and Lucy got to know one another, sharing stories late into the night when researching cases and in desperate need of a break.Â
Lucy came to learn what Lockwood meant by the punch when you all met not being the first time. You came to find out what brought Lucy to London. And you both came to discover that, with the right planning, you could both scare Lockwood and George.Â
Only, one night, George and Lucy decided to tag team which also gave them a chance to talk about you and Lockwood.Â
âDo they know? They have to know.â
âDonât bother.â George sighed. âThree years and nothing has changed.â
âTheyâve been like that for three years?â
George just nodded.Â
âSeriously?â
âYou know I walked into the kitchen yesterday and they were slow dancing in the kitchen andâŠit was like nothing happened.â
âYeahâŠâÂ
âWhat?â
âWhat?â Lucy asked.Â
âYour face. You have thatâŠlook.â
âWhat look?â
âThe âIâm making a planâ face.â
âMaybe because I am.â
âWell then?â
âWhat if we tried?â
âI already have.â
âMaybe,â Lucy nodded. âBut that was then. Now youâve got me. Tag-team. What do you say?â
âWell, considering it would take an earthquake to wake them both up from whatever coma theyâve convinced themselves that theyâre inâŠsure. Why not? But how.â
âI havenât got that far into the plan yet.â
But it didnât take too long.Â
After six months of living with each other, the plan practically made itself. The chemistry between yourself and Lockwood was palpable and even more so when you were outside together.Â
Like when you and Lockwood were in the library with George and Lucy where Lockwood was standing behind you, reading the section of paper you were pointing to, his arms caging you in from where you sat, when a group of Fittes Agents waltzed over.Â
âYou might want to give your girlfriend a little breathing room, Tony. After all, PDA can be off putting especially in such a public place.â
Standing, and not denying it, Lockwood practically burned Kipps a hole in the ground for him to fall through.Â
âRelax, Tony. Just having a little fun. So, are you going to introduce me to your girlfriend?â
âIâm not his girlfriend.â
âSheâs not my girlfriend.â
Kipps couldnât help but widen his smile. âYouâre not. Well then, Tony.â
However, you were up like a shot standing beside Lockwood. âBut I would be very careful in your next choice of words. He might not be my boyfriend but he is my friend.â
Closer up, Kipps seemed to recognise you. Or at least, thatâs what his face told you.Â
âYou know, for all the people in the world, I wouldn't have considered one of the best rogue agents being best buddies with our very own Anthony Lockwood.â
âAnd why not?â
âAlthough, rogue is very fitting for Tony. After all, it was breaking the rules that got him into trouble in the first place. Sweetheart, if I were you, Iâd walk away whilst you still can.â
The only thing anyone could remember was hearing the contact of your palm across Kippsâ cheek and the red mark left in its place.Â
âFuck you.â
It took a moment to get over the shock before Kipps and his team walked away and you relaxed a little before grabbing your jacket and telling the others youâd be back.Â
âAre you-â
âIâm fine, Lockwood. Iâll be back in five.â
It was in those five minutes that one of Kippsâ team found you by the vending machine.Â
âIâm sorry about what he said.â
âWhy? You didnât say it. And Iâm guessing youâre assigned to be with him.â
âStill, I could have said something to stop him and I didnât.â
âSomething tells me even if you did, he still would have said it anyway.â
âMaybe.â
âWhatâs your name?â
âVictor.â
âNice to meet you,Victor.â
Meanwhile, across the room and up a level, Lucy spotted you talking to Victor. Even laughing every once in a while. And when Lockwood joined her, she saw the pain in his eyes before a brick wall came up.Â
âWe should be getting ready. George found something. Iâll be back in a minute.â
For the rest of the day, Lockwood seemed closed up. Especially towards you.Â
âWhat is your problem?â you eventually asked him.Â
âNothing.â
âLockwood, I heard you snap at Lucy earlier.â
âShe made a mistake.â
âExactly,â you cut him off. âA mistake. And sheâs never made one before.â
âOne that could have put one of us in serious danger-â
âWe were outside the perimeter.â You could have laughed, until Lockwood asked you a question you weren't expecting.Â
âDo you like him?â
âWho?â
âThe guy you were talking to earlier.â
âKipps? You did see me slap him, didnât you-â
âNot Kipps. Vinny. Or Vincent orâŠwhatever his name is.â
You thought back for a moment. âVictor.â
Lockwood nodded.Â
âDo I like him? What are we? 12?â
âJust answer the question.â
âWhy?â
âBecause I need to know if youâre fraternising with the enemy.â
You laughed. âFraternizing?â
But when Lockwood didnât change, you did.Â
âYou know what, fuck you, Lockwood. What I do with my time outside of work is no concern to you. You know what, do this yourself. Iâll go and help George.â
A few minutes later, Lucy walked inside the room to a very grumpy Lockwood.Â
âWhat the hell did you do? Fraternising? This isnât Bridgerton, Lockwood.â
âWill you just help with the set-up?â
Sighing, Lucy did as she was told, but not before telling Lockwood a couple things he desperately needed to hear.Â
âYouâre gonna lose her.â
âWhat?â
Picking up some of the iron chains and laying them down, Lucy explained. âIt might not be Victor, but one day it will be someone. And it probably wonât be long before they come along and whisk her away from your grumpy arse because youâre too stubborn to tell her the truth.â
âWhat truth?â
âThat you like her. Love her, even. If my gut feeling is right. And it usually is.â
âLucy-â
âLook, you can go on being an arsehole because youâre scared. Or you can talk to her. All Iâm saying is do something about it before somebody else does. Both me and George have seen the way you look at her. Itâs more than you want to admit, Lockwood. But one day youâre going to have to, or else you are going to lose her and all youâll have is a bruised eye and a broken nose once every couple of years, if that.â
Lucy didnât say anything else after that but Lockwood did apologise for snapping at her earlier which she forgave him for after calling him a frustrating bastard. From then, she watched as you all completed the job together and that look that she often saw in Lockwoodâs eyes, returned when he looked at you.Â
Yet, by the time you had all gotten home, he still hadn't apologised to you. So, with a hard nudge from Lucy, Lockwood finally made his way to find you.Â
âDo something before somebody else does, and that includes apologising. And sheâs in the Library. Goodnight.â
Lockwood stood outside of the Library door for a while, trying his best to find the right words so he wouldnât end up with a broken nose, despite how much he probably deserved one.Â
You had lit the fire to try and cancel out the cold that had seeped in through a forgotten open window, and if you didnât know any better, you would have thought it was midnight, not 6 in the morning.Â
âHey.â
Looking behind you, you tried your best not to roll your eyes at Lockwood as he walked inside.Â
âIâm just looking over some old cases. Just so you know that Iâm not fraternising with the enemy by reading a book.â
âI shouldnât have said it like that.â Lockwood began. âI shouldnât have said it at all. I justâŠI guess I panicked.â
âThatâs a bullshit excuse and you know it.â
âYouâre right. And Iâm sorry.â
You looked at him.
âReally, really sorry. For the fraternising comment and the bullshit excuse.â
You took a minute and it was the longest minute of his life.Â
âOkay, guess I can forgive you.â
âIâm still sorry.â
âI know, thatâs why I forgave you. But a cup of tea wouldnât hurt.â
Lockwood smiled. âOkay. One tea coming up.â
Only, as he walked away, you answered his question.Â
âAnd Iâm notâŠfraternising with the enemy. Victor and I were just talking. I think youâd like him. I think he might hate Kipps just as much as you do. And, no.â you shook your head. âI donât like him. Just so you knowâŠâ
Lockwood nodded and for a moment, turned to walk away until Lucyâs words echoed again in his head.Â
âDo something about it, before somebody else does.â
So he did.Â
Sighing under his breath, he took the jump, turned around and reached for you.Â
Taking your head in his hands, he cupped your jaw before bringing your lips to his. At first, it shocked you and for a split second, he thought he was about to get his nose broken for good this time.Â
Until you kissed back.Â
You felt yourself stumble a little but Lockwood caught you, holding you close to him before his forehead came to touch yours, your eyes still closed.Â
âWow.â
âIâm sorry but I just had to-â
You shook your head, âDonât apologise.â
âNo?â
You couldnât help but smile. âNo.â
âSo youâre not going to break my nose.â
âNot this time,â you laughed a little.Â
âOkayâŠthen Iâm gonna jump. I like you. Well, I more than like you. Like way, way more. And IâŠI want to do something about it before someone else does.â
âLike Victor?â
âYeah,â Lockwood laughed a little. âLike Victor.â
âThenâŠgood. Iâm glad you finally jumped.â
âYou are.â
You nodded. âI mean, you have terrible timing but yeah, Iâm glad you jumped.â
âGood.â
âGood. Now, are you gonna kiss me again or am I gonna have to-â
Lockwood didnât need telling twice.Â

Bloody Pardon
Summary: Anthony Lockwood x Fe!Reader ~ Despite your feelings towards Anthony Lockwood, you're starting to think that nightmare you had about locking him in a trunk chest might have actually been a dream.
Disclaimer: no idea on legally binding marriages but we'll ignore that for this fic. Quill Kipps platonic relationship with the reader (frenemies + his crush on Lucy)
You laughed nervously. âWhat?â
Lucy stood up from her corner of the sofa to look at the wide-eyed George. âGeorge? Please, please tell me this is an April Fools.â
âGiven that itâs the middle of November, this is definitely not an April Fools.â George replied.Â
âGeorge!âÂ
You hadnât meant to call his name so loudly, but the information heâd just given you pardoned your reaction.Â
âWhat if you just ask him about it? Maybe heâll have an explanation.â
âAn explanation?â you questioned before laughing. âOh, he better. Or else, Iâll kill him.â
Lucy jumped in front of you and pulled you back. âWait, no. Donât. Not yet. Look, we donât even know if he knows yet.â
âHow can he not know?â
âYou didnât.â
âHeâs the one who probably signed the papers in the first place, Lucy!â
âLook, why doesnât one of us just go and ask him?â
âGreat!â you forced a smile. âIâll go.â
âAbsolutely not.â Lucy pulled you back again. âGeorge, you go.â
âBut-â
âGeorge.â
âFine.â
George disappeared from the doorway and made his way upstairs towards Lockwoodâs room. Heâd been up there most of the day running through multiple papers on the business and the cases that had come through in the past couple of days.Â
âLucy?â
Lucy turned around and found you slumped against the arm of the sofa.Â
âHey,â
Pulling your hands from your face, Lucy held onto your wrists and knelt down. âLook at me.â
âHow could this have happened?â
âI donât know. But I do know Lockwood.â
Lucy paused for a moment. âI donât think he will even know what this is about.â
âBut if he hasâŠâ
âThen weâll deal with it and Iâll help you bury his body in the back garden. Youâll get through this. We all will.â
âI donât even know how this could have happened.â
Lucy pulled you in for a hug, tightly. âHow about I pop the kettle on? Make us some tea? Two sugars?â
You nodded. âThanks.â
âCome on.â
However, before either of you could get out of the living room, Lockwood came running down the stairs, George quick on his tail. âLockwood?â
Lucy called his name but there was no breaking his concentration from the paper in his hand that had both his own handwriting on and somebody elseâs. He rushed around the place before making his way into the kitchen.Â
Luckily, you managed to catch the door before it slammed behind him and you made your way inside.Â
âLockwood?â
âSomethingâs not right.â
âYouâre telling me.â
âSaintâs would have said something. Surely, he would have-âÂ
He was talking about the case.Â
âLockwood? Did you not hear anything George told you?â Lucy asked before turning to her left. âYou did tell him, didnât you?â
âYes! Whether he listened or not, I donât really know.â
âLockwood!â you called his name again, but still nothing.Â
âTony!â
Oh, boy.Â
You took the paper from his hand and slammed it onto the counter top.
âMy- what? Am I in trouble?â
âTrouble? Have you not listened to a word George told you?â
âWhen? Oh, no. But I think Iâve almost solved-â
âWeâre married, Tony!â
Lockwoodâs face went from a smile to a confused and nervous look of curiosity. âWhat?â
âSurely, you would have known? After all, you were the one who was left alone in the courthouse three months ago.â
âCourthouse? What are you talking about?â
Sighing, you made your way to George who handed you the three pieces of paper heâd found when down at the CourtHouse himself.Â
âMr and Mrs Lockwood.â you read the first letter. âCongratulations on your marriage, enclosed you will find another copy of your marriage certificateâŠâ you continued to read the rest of the letter before shoving it into his chest and reading aloud the next two.Â
âA letter, sent to me by your Great-Aunt. Welcome to the Family. Now, as much as I love all of you as my family, I would have liked to at least be made aware that I was suddenly in need of changing my last name.â
The final piece of paper was a letter from Mark Smith-Kensington.Â
âWe have recently been made aware of your nuptials. In this case, you are in need of updating all of your personal information for the Post Office, as well as medical forms and driving license.â
You pushed the final letter against his chest. âWhat did you do Lockwood?â
Lockwoodâs head was spinning. How could this have- oh.Â
âLockwood?â
Lockwood turned to both Lucy and George. He knew something. Maybe not what they suspected he knew, but he definitely knew something.Â
âPlease donât be mad.â
âMad? Ooh, Lockwood.â you had to laugh, or else you might have cried. âI am so far past mad. We are married and you didnât even bother to, I donât know, ask me? Tell me, even, that youâd decided to use my name for a marriage certificate.â
âIt was meant to be fake-â
âI beg your bloody pardon?â
âIt was meant to be fake. Remember how I told you I managed to get into Jamesonâs Club so we could prove Harold was the murderer. Well, they didnât exactly let single people in.â
âOh, my god.â
âI swear, I thought it was fake.â
âWell, itâs very, very real Lockwood. Very real.â
âWhere are you going?â Lockwood called after you as you made your way out of the kitchen, grabbing your jacket that lay on the back of the kitchen chair.Â
âOut. Donât follow me.â
You didnât know how far you had travelled but eventually you came to a stop at a small, quiet park. You sat down on an old wooden bench that was donated by Harriet Smith - some wealthy heiress from New York who had spent her childhood in the park.Â
After a while, you heard a voice. And it definitely wasnât the voice you were expecting.Â
âHello.â
You sat up straight for a moment and looked around you before you found Quill Kipps standing behind you in a pair of jeans, a shirt and a grey woollen coat.Â
âOh, hi.â
âMind if I-â
âSure.â you smiled before he made his way around and sat next to you, leaving enough of a space between the both of you.Â
âWhat are you doing this far away from the house?â
âI needed a break.â
âFromâŠâ
âLook, if you want me to shit-talk Lockwood, you can go and find someone else to do that with.âÂ
Quill studied your face for a short moment as you looked at him before turning back to look at the trees in the park.Â
âWhatâs happened?â
âWhat?â
âNo offence, but youâre not the best at hiding your emotions when it comes to Lockwood. Whatâs happened between the both of you?â
âNothing.â
Kipps called your name in a soft tone. Despite your feelings towards him, youâd each found yourself in each otherâs company in the time of need. And from that, a small friendship blossomed - despite the fact that both of you disliked it greatly.Â
After all, you were both still rivals.Â
You sighed. âFine. You are looking at the new Mrs Anthony Lockwood.â
âWhat?â
You turned to look at him, âLockwood and I are married. Apparently, the form he made me sign to get into Jamesonâs was a marriage certificate.â
Kipps didnât know where to put himself. He knew Lockwood could be reckless and stupid at times, but he didnât think he would be that reckless and stupid.Â
âIâd offer to kill him but Iâd wager you already have that planned.â
âDeath certificate is signed, sealed and delivered to the Grim Reaper.â
âNeed a clean up crew?â Kipps offered.Â
You laughed, âThanks.â
âSo thatâs why youâre out here? Escaping your husband? I have to hand it to you, itâs a good alibi.â
You smiled again, keeping your arms folded across your middle. âHonestly, IâŠI donât know whether to be mad and kill him or justâŠâ
âSit here forever?â
âYeah.â
âMind if I stick with you, for a while?â
âYou donât have your own surprise marriage, do you?â
Kipps laughed. âNo. I justâŠI-Iâm thinking about asking out a girl.â
âIs she cute?â
âYeah.â
âDo you like her?â
âA lot.â
âIs she kind?â
âYeah.â
âShe Lucy?â
Kipps half answered you before turning his head to you where he found you with a smug smile on your face.Â
âHow did you-â
âOh, please. I see you when youâre around her. Youâre either blushing like an embarrassed toddler or youâre as speechless as a toddler.â
âDo you think she knows?â
âNo. Or, if she has, she hasn't said anything.â
âOh.â
Kipps seemed a little defeated at first. âBut you should ask her out for a coffee at least. I have a feeling sheâll say yes.â
He smiled. âGreat.â
âAt least someone in that house will feel good about their love life.â
âWhat are you going to do?â
âI donât know.â you shrugged. âBut once he reads that letter, heâll realise that his Great-Aunt Violet is coming for a visit to officially meet her new great-niece. So, thatâll be fun.â
âWell, Iâm here if you need any back-up.â
âThank you, Quill.â
âAnytime.â
Eventually, Quill helped you up from the bench and you both made your way back to Portland Row. On the way, you both stopped inside a small cafe for some food and a tea, making sure to pick Lucy up a loaf of bread and some doughnuts for George.Â
Unlocking the door, Lucy met you at the bottom of the stairs where Quill called for her to talk.Â
âAre you okay?â
âI will be.â
Making your way into the kitchen, you placed the packet of doughnuts onto the table for George.Â
âOh, thank you.â
âWhereâs Lockwood?â
âIn his room. Heâs been on the phone to the marriage people since you left.â
You nodded your head and popped the kettle on, managing to make two cups of tea before Lockwood even thought to leave his room.Â
Knocking on the door, you entered and found him with the phone and the back of his hand pressed to his head, his eyes shut closed.Â
âThought you might fancy a cup.â
Lockwood jumped at your voice but quickly tried to recover.Â
âT-Thanks. Thank you.â
Pulling up a chair, you sat beside his desk, crossing one leg over the other.Â
âIâm really sorry,â Lockwood began. âI - I know it was stupid. A completely stupid idea. And, I donât want to just make an excuse.â
âBut it was for the case.â
âI should have still thought. But, I swear. I swear to you, I really thought it was fake. If Iâd have known-â
You nodded. âI know. I know you would have done. ButâŠTony, what are we going to do?â
âIâve been trying to find out how to get a divorce but they keep sending me round the houses.â
âDid you read your Auntâs letter?â
âNot fully.â
âSheâs coming up to visit us in a week. Apparently wants to officially meet her niece.â
âThatâll be something.â
You nodded and the pair of you sat in a quiet silence for a few moments. âIâll figure it out. I promise.â
âThank you, Tony.â

Bloody Pardon 2
Summary: Anthony Lockwood x Fe!Reader -> Part 2 of Bloody Pardon. Aunt Violet and her friend June has come to visit and you're still married to Lockwood.
Disclaimer: Not proof read, fluff, angst, descriptions of panic attacks, talks of love, falling in love, pain of love.
âI beg your bloody pardon?â
You practically chased Lockwood down the stairs of the house.Â
In his hand, he was looking through more newspaper clippings George had found. Youâd originally found him in the Library, his shirt sleeves rolled up and his tie thrown across the back of the sofa.Â
Heâd been rambling things about the case and what he needed you to find out whilst George and Lucy headed out into town to collect extra equipment.Â
Youâd asked what he would be doing. (collecting his aunt and her friend from the train station)
That was when he told you.
âYou heard me.â
âLockwood, I might be married to you but I am not your wife. I thought I had made that explicitly clear to you.â
âYou have.â Lockwood agreed, leafing through the mail at the bottom of the stairs.Â
Sometimes you wondered whether he had any perception of anything else in his life.Â
âBut, my Aunt is also bringing her best-friend who just happens to beâŠâ
âA posh twat?âÂ
You turned and found Lucy standing, eating a Digestive by the bottom of the stairs.Â
Lockwood gave her a short smile. âHighly opinionated, to put it nicely.âÂ
âStill doesnât mean we have to act like a married couple.â
âYes, it does.â
âWhy?â
âBecause if we donât, the night will only become more excruciating than it already will be. And I know for a fact nobody in this house wants that. Ever.â
âI thought she was coming down for the weekend?â Lucy asked.Â
You could kill Lockwood.
Maybe Kipps would still be your clean-up-crew.
An hour more of arguing and you finally gave in. You and Lockwood would act like the happy couple, Lucy and Kipps would join for the first evening meal and, since George would be visiting his parents for the weekend, that left a room open for his Aunt.Â
âIf youâd like, I can sleep in the basement. Your Auntâs friend can stay in my room.â
âLucy!â
âOh, sorry.â
You slammed your hand against your head before Lockwood thanked her and agreed with her.Â
âI do have one question though,â Lucy stated.Â
âOh, you have one question.â
âIf your aunt is staying and she thinks you're marriedâŠwhere will you two sleep?â
âIn my room.â
Part of you felt Lockwood had answered way too quickly.Â
âAnd I suppose you feel safe sleeping next to me, inches from a pillow I could use to smother you in your sleep?â
Lockwood smiled and your stomach flipped - out of feeling or anger, you didnât quite know.Â
âI trust you with my life, Darling.â
You narrowed your eyes and picked up the paper in front of you on the kitchen table. âDonât push your luck, Sweetheart.â
After that, you moved out of the kitchen and went straight up to the attic before collapsing onto your bed and trying to drown both the light and your thoughts out with your pillow.Â
âIt shouldnât be that bad.â
Lucy must have followed you up.Â
âYouâre not the one whoâs married into the family involuntarily, might I add.â
Lucy laughed and made her way over to your bed before sitting down on the edge. âCome on, itâs not that bad.â
Swiftly, she pulled at the pillow until you let go and she placed it beside you. From there, she pulled at your hands before you sat up.Â
âHey, at least you get to embrace your feelings towards Lockwood.â
âIf, what you mean by feelings, is the capability to brutally murder him every hour then, sure. Iâll help add to the marital murder rate in this country.â
âThatâs not what I meant and you know it.â
âNo, I donât.â
Lucy simply said your name and kept eye-contact.Â
Trust her to be the one to figure it out.Â
âI canât like him, Lucy.â
âBut you do.â
âBut I do.â
âWhy are you so fixed on not liking him?â
âBecause in this world, liking someone puts everyone in danger. I donât want to do that.â
âThe only person you are putting in danger is yourself. You donât think me and George donât notice how you look at him or, better yet, how he looks at you?â
âHe doesnât look at me.â
âFor the love of-â Lucy rolled her eyes and said your name again. âThe pair of you are idiots.â
âLucy, I trust your judgement of character but youâre all off for this one.â
âBloody hell, alright. Fine. If Iâm wrong-â
âYou are.â
âIâm not.â
âBut you are.â
âBut Iâm not.â
âWhat are you two arguing about?â George asked from the top of the stairs.
âShe doesnât believe Lockwood loves her.â
âWhoa, hey! No, I never said anything about love.â
âNo, but your eyes do.â
âGeorge.â
âDonât look at me, Iâm with Lucy on this one.â
âFor the love of-â
âTeaâs ready!â
Despite your feelings of wanting to murder Lockwood, right now you could have kissed him.Â
A week later, George had left for his parents and whilst Lockwood cooked dinner back at Portland Row with the help of Kipps and Lucy, you were trying to clear your head from all the thoughts about what was or could possibly happen in the next couple of days.Â
You and Lucy had already spent all of the day before moving your stuff into Lockwoodâs room to make it look more believable that you both were actually a married couple. Meanwhile, Lockwood and George covered the house in different photos of all of you from dayâs out to âthe wedding day.â.Â
And yet, despite all of this, you couldnât seem to wrap your head around it.Â
Yes, your feelings towards Anthony Lockwood had been, in the past, less than professional. But, you had gone to great lengths to hide those particular feelings. And, so far, youâd done a good job.Â
Except, for the following few days, you were going to have to spend most of your time acting on or, at least, around those feelings all the while sharing the same bed with him.Â
Still, you didnât exactly know when you had begun to walk back home but both too slowly and too quickly, you found yourself entering your key into your front door as the snow outside just began to clump on the street and the steps.Â
Entering, you were hit with the hot air from the house along with a mixture of smells from Lockwoodâs cooking.Â
It was rare he ever cooked since George was always the better one, but - after finding out when you were sick - Lockwood could have been a close rival if he wanted to be.Â
You could hear laughter flowing from the living room and kitchen before you heard someone speak.Â
âSo, is this her?â
The voice wasnât anything like you had been expecting but then a second voice came from the kitchen.Â
âOh, my, Anthony. You didnât tell me she was this beautiful.âÂ
The second woman pushed past the first with a smile on her face and she came straight over to you and you couldnât help but mirror her own smile, it was that infectious.Â
âHello, my darling. Iâm Violet, but please, call me Vi.â
âOkay.â
You were still spinning a little so it took you a moment before introducing yourself.Â
âQuick, let's get that coat off you.â Violet started to help you remove your coat before walking you towards the kitchen with her. âThis is June.â
You shook her hand but, compared to Violet, June seemedâŠyou couldnât tell. JustâŠnot as warming.Â
âNow, I want to get to know my new grand-niece. Tony tells me you're the best swordswoman heâs ever seen.â
The âgetting to know youâ conversation was split between Violet asking her questions to which Lockwood would manage to answer most of them and June asking her but Violet completely ignoring her.Â
Until the BIG question.Â
âWhy did you two get married?â
June was rather harsh in her asking but Violet just smiled joyfully and turned to you. âOh, yes. Tony, Iâm still upset about that. I, at least, deserved an invite to your wedding.â
As Lockwood began to reply, you shot out of your seat to help him save what he had been cooking in his pan as it started to boil over. Taking a tea towel, you wrapped it around the handle and turned down the heat at Lockwood reached above you for a lid, handed it to you and reached for the seasoning.Â
You replaced the pan onto the stove, holding onto the lid. Lockwood found certain seasonings before asking you if youâd seen the Rosemary.Â
âTop shelf.â
âAh.â
The pair of you worked in sync until you placed the lid on top and turned to face him only to find the pair of you closer than youâd ever been when stood in the kitchen together.Â
âThatâs why, June.â
You both turned and found the two older women watching you both like you were their favourite soap opera.Â
âLook at them, how they move together. You know, my Frank and I were like that when we were younger.â
As much as the following conversation had stemmed from the way Violet viewed yourself and Lockwood together, it gave you enough time to distract yourself from the fact that you and Lockwood were standing closer than you had agreed with before you walked back home.Â
Dinner passed by easier than you expected, but you still thanked the heavens for Lucy and Kipps who managed to distract Violet and June into either reminiscing about the past or thinking about the future of couples such as Lucy and Kipps.Â
Until June asked her questions again.Â
Lucy- well, Kipps was half way through talking about Lucy and their first date when June turned to you and Lockwood who were sitting shoulder to shoulder and asked; âHow did you know you two were in love? After all, you both are a little younger than some to get married in this day and age. How did you know he was the one?â
You sat there, food half chewed and you shared a slightly panicked look with Lockwood who, despite all the questioning, somehow still managed to keep his cool.Â
âErm, wellâŠâ
Think of something, think of something, think of something, think of something, think of something, think of something, think of some-
âIt shouldnât be that hard, dear. He is your husband after all.â
Husband.Â
That word echoed over and over in your head.Â
Lockwood is your husband. Shouldnât you have a story?Â
âOh, June. Leave her alone. Sheâs had a busy day, Iâm sure sheâll tell us later.âÂ
âNo, Vi. Weâve come to see the newly wedded couple, havenât we?â
It felt like the walls were closing in on you and the room was slowly starting to fall onto an axis. Slowly, the voices began to muffle and before you knew it, you pushed your chair back and excused yourself.
âIâll be right back.â
In the distance, you could hear Lockwood apologising for you. Something about work and a brutal interrogation not that long ago.Â
Pulling yourself up the stairs with the bannister, you eventually made it into the bathroom and shut the door behind you.Â
Usually, anytime you looked at Lockwood, you got nervous. But, like, happy-nervous, butterflies forming a tornado in your stomach nervous.Â
Only, with the questioning and feelings and the having to act like you loved Lockwood with all your heart whilst also making sure that the real feelings were kept at bay and the feelings of annoyance remained and the fake and real feelings didnât get mixed up; that happy tornado now felt like a washing machine that had come off its hinges and was beating against your lungs.Â
It took a while before you realised Lockwood had been standing outside the bathroom door almost the entire time and had been calling your name.Â
Meanwhile, you had turned the tap on and off twice, splashed your face twice and by the time you felt ready to open the door and head back downstairs, Lockwood pulled you back.Â
âHey, you okay?â
âYeah, yeah. Sorry.â
âDonât apologise. You donât have to apologise.â
âChrist,â that feeling was coming back.Â
You pressed your hand to your stomach, trying to focus on your breathing.Â
Lockwoodâs gaze scanned your face. You were growing paler by the second and your breathing was just like how it used to be when you had a horror movie night with Lucy and George and you knew something was coming - you just didnât know what.Â
âAlright. Youâre alright.â Lockwoodâs hand came to your shoulders, looking around before finding his room and leading you inside.Â
From there, Lockwood sat you down on the bed before closing the door and coming back and kneeling in front of you.Â
âI donât know if I can do this. I-I canât lie to your family, Anthony. I can barely lie to myself.â
Lockwood continued to study you before bringing your hand to his chest.Â
âCan you feel that?â
âFeel what?â
âMy heartbeat. Can you feel it?â
Lockwood pressed your hand closer to his chest until he saw the small flicker of recognition in your eyes.Â
âOkay, I want you to count. I want you to count the beats until you can breathe again. Okay?â
âOkay.â
You were on track for a while until your mind started floating again.Â
âItâs just me and you. Nobody else. Just me and you, counting the beats.â
You nodded and started counting again.Â
You didnât know how long had passed. No-one came to find either of you and Lockwood never made a move to get out or apologise to anyone for taking so long.Â
It was just you and him.Â
He didnât care if it took all night to make sure you were okay. He would kneel on the floor with you and for you, holding your hand against his chest, counting his heartbeats until you finally were able to breathe.Â
âI donât know if I- I donât know how to do this. I donât know how to beâŠwith you.âÂ
Without being with you, you wanted to add.Â
âThen just be you.â Anthony told you. âJust be you. Lord knows Barnes already calls us an old married couple anyway.â
Lockwoodâs statement made you smile, and only when you let out a soft, quiet laugh, did he fully smile, too.Â
âIâm sorry,â Lockwood apologised, gripping your hand in his a little tighter. âIf Iâd never picked up the case-â
âThen Faye would have never have gotten the answers about her brother and would still be spending every night wondering what happened to him,â you told Lockwood. âI know why you did it, Lockwood. I donât blame you for doing what you did, even if you did sign real papers rather than fake ones.â
Lockwood nodded, waiting for you to continue.
âButâŠI guess we could skip over the newly wedded bliss and go straight to an old married couple?âÂ
Lockwood looked up to you for a moment, both delighted and unsure on how to react.Â
âI mean, when have we ever done anything straight forward in this house?â
Lockwood smiled, and let out a small sigh of relief before lowering his head and bringing your hand to his lips and kissing your palm.Â
âThank you.â Lockwood then held your hand in both of his. âFor everything. And, if it helps, weâre only gonna be married for a few more days.â
âWhat?â
âI finally got a call back from the solicitor.â Lockwood told you. âHe did say itâs the first case Miss Kirk has ever had where fake and real documents have been mistaken in a marriage contract, but sheâs taken our case and sheâs drawing up all what needs to be signed. Everything that we each own will remain with ourselves. Itâll be as if we were never married.â
It took you a moment before you realised what this meant.Â
No more husband or wife.Â
Itâll go back to the way that it was.Â
Just friends and coworkers.Â
Feelings could be hidden again and you would never have to talk about them, ever again.Â
âWellâŠgood. Thank you, Lockwood.â
Lockwood nodded, slowly letting your hand go as he stood. âI-I should go and check on everyone. Make sure they havenât killed Lucy and Kipps yet.â
âYeah, you better. And, Tony?â
He looked back from the door.Â
âThank you.â
Lockwood nodded with a smile in response before leaving the room and closing the door behind him and the moment he did, you felt your heart shatter.Â
Meanwhile, unbeknownst to you, Lockwoodâs had done the same.Â
Downstairs, Lockwood told everyone you were okay and had just eaten something bad earlier that day. You had thought the walk would have cleared your head but it didnât so you just needed a little time.Â
Juneâs reaction didnât go unnoticed by Lockwood either.Â
She either didnât like you and therefore didnât care, or she didnât believe a word he said.Â
Maybe both.Â
But when you came down ten minutes later, Violet hugged you and had you sit down.Â
She had noticed you hadnât finished your tea since Juneâs grilling had sent your stomach beating against your lungs so, whilst Lucy, Kipps and Lockwood entertained June in the living room - helped with Violetâs excuse of wanting to get to know her grand-niece better - Violet made you a cup of tea and some dry toast.Â
âI always wanted another girl in the family. Ever since me, there hasnât been another girl born. All boys.â Violet smiled, pushing the toaster down. âSo when I heard Anthony had gotten married, I was over the moon. I would have liked an invite, but it was rather short notice.â
âYou have no idea,â you laughed a little. âListen, Mrs-â
âPlease, call me Violet. Or, Vi.â
âViolet,â you smiled.
In all honesty, you were a nervous-wreck. You pressed your hands between your knees as you turned to look at her as she finished stirring the two teas sheâd made.Â
âOh, thank you.â She handed you your cup. âViolet.â
âYes, my dear.â
âYou have to know, I do love your nephew. Weâre both young and it was quick but I do love him.â
Violet smiled. âI have no doubt about that, my dear. And, please, ignore June. She really is a nice woman. When I first met her, she didnât believe that me and Frank were a couple and were rather two undercover agents.â
âOh,â you laughed.Â
âYes, oh.â Violet replied. âSheâll warm up to you eventually. Just give her time. And tea. She loves tea.â
âNoted.â
âBut I would like to know something,â she added. âWhen did you know?â
âKnow what?â you asked, a little weary.Â
âThat you loved Anthony. People will dispute young and first love also being your forever and last love, but I donât. Iâd just like to know. Itâs been so long since I've seen a love story play out and, just when did you know?â
You smiled, placing your hand over herâs as she held your other hand.Â
âIâll tell you, but I have to warn you, itâs not exciting.â
âAny tale of love is exciting at my age, my dear.â
With a smile, you then told her the truth.Â
You told her about the day you knew you had fallen in love with Anthony Lockwood.Â
Youâd known you liked him ever since youâd been arguing with him when fighting off level two spirits in a building just outside of Guildford.Â
Youâd been annoyed at him for a couple of weeks since heâd been reckless too many times to count and it was only when you yelled at him, not noticing the spirit behind you and he pushed you onto the ground to save you, did you speak to him in a normal voice.Â
âWhy are you so bothered about this?â
âBecause if something happened to you, what do you think Iâd-â youâd panicked for a moment but kept your cool. âWeâd do? What do you think weâd do if something happened to you, Tony?â
It was a while before you told him you loved him (at least, thatâs what you told Violet.)
But the day you fell in love with him, and you admitted it to yourself, was the day he had just come home.Â
Heâd been out most of the day and Lucy and George had gone to pick up some take-out when you stood in the kitchen doorway and saw him hang up his coat, remove his tie and walk inside.Â
It was nothing spectacular. It was just a small âI love youâ that you said in your head. In fact, it took you a moment or two before you even knew youâd said it in your head.Â
âAnd what about Tony? When did he-â
âWhen I saw her teach George how to dance in the living room one day,â Lockwood said from where he was leaning against the door frame. âThough I didnât know it at the time.â
âJust as bad as your uncle.â Violet said. âYou know, it took me hitting him over the head with the morning newspaper for him to tell me he loved me. A man of very few words, but also a man of great action.â
Lockwood smiled at you and you smiled back as he pulled out a chair and sat beside you with his arm across the back of yours.Â
Lockwood then sat there as Violet told both of you the story of her and Frank and how they met and fell in love and got married and despite how much they tried, they could never have children.Â
But it was okay.Â
âWe spent all our free time helping out other families, helping lost children find their families when theyâve been separated by lost spirits.â
It wasnât until June, however, came inside telling everyone she was going to bed that you had noticed youâd seemingly moulded yourself into Lockwoodâs side as Violet had been telling her story.Â
All that came now was sleeping in the same bed as Lockwood.Â
Maybe you could build a pillow wall.

Message From Iris
Summary: Anthony Lockwood x Fe!Named Reader -> You come to Lockwood with a proposition for him and his team.
Disclaimer: Enemies to Lovers style. Named Reader as 'Iris'. Fake Dating, marriage of convenience. Not Proof Read.
âStay there, Iâll be back.â
Lockwood nodded, and leaned back in his chair.Â
How long had he even sat there? 2, maybe even 3 hours? God knows what George and Lucy must have been thinkingâŠ
Why couldnât this have been her? Why couldnât she had been sat here, instead of him? Why, after all the times she had stolen his cases, couldnât she have been the one âtrespassingâ instead of him?
Slouching, Lockwood turned to look at his hands, feeling them begin to shake.Â
No matter how much he was scared of what could happen, he couldnât let the police know that.Â
Only, looking from his hands, he spottedâŠpaper.Â
Folded up and jammed under the table, its white corner stuck out. The only way anyone could see it was if they were sitting where he was right now.Â
Looking around, of course, he couldnât see anyone. And, knowing that it was probably very late at night, not many, if any, officers would be behind the glass.Â
So, yanking it from its hidden paradise, Lockwood unfolded it beneath the table. It was scrap, torn from a page and black ink scribble across it.Â
Go along with it.Â
Iris.
Iris? Who the hell was Iris? He didnât know any Iris. Maybe it wasnât for him.Â
Though, before he folded it back up and shove it back under the table, the door opened up.Â
âCome on.â
âWhat?â
âYouâre free to go. You wanna stay? I can-â
Lockwood had never stood quicker in his life. He followed the officer down the hallway, to the locker room where he was given his stuff back.Â
âYouâre lucky your wife came for you when she did.â
Wife?
âMy wife?â
âYeah,â the officer laughed, turning the key to the final door. âShe didnât seem too happy that we arrested you. Sorry, about that, by the way. If we had known you knew the Langstons, we wouldnât have-â
âArrested me?â
âYeah.â the officer laughed, nervously.Â
Finally pushing the door forward, he let Lockwood go ahead.Â
âAfter you, Mr Lockwood.â
Only, as the door opened and Lockwood walked ahead, rather than being greeted with his fellow agent and friend, Lucy, he was greeted withâŠyou.Â
You saw the recognition in Lockwoodâs eyes as he drank you in.Â
Standing there, you lookedâŠfancy. Accountant fancy. No longer in the dark washed jeans and scrubbed out slogan t-shirt, you stood in heels, a freshly ironed skirt, pressed blouse, all the while dawning a long coat - one that he recognised in shape and style, but not in cleanliness.Â
Usually, you were covered in dust and a little mud, and on the odd occasion, a scar or too. But, despite you looking the complete opposite as you stood across from him, he knew it was still you.Â
âThere you are, honey. Officer, thank you so much for giving me my husband back. We were supposed to be at dinner with a couple old friends tonight, but instead-â
âAnd, we can only apologise again, Mrs Lockwood. If we had known your husband knew your friends, we would have-â
âNot arrested him?â
âExactly.â
âWell, thank you so much anyway. Honey, we better go. Otherwise George will have your head.â
Lockwood laughed along, putting an arm around you as you came into his side and kissed his cheek.Â
âHi,â
âHi,â he replied, trying his best to make it no longer sound like a question.Â
âHave a good night, officer.âÂ
âYou too, Mrs Lockwood.â
You turned, along with Lockwood and walked outside, his hand still around you. Neither of you said a word until you both got into a black cab and you handed over the piece of paper with, what Lockwood assumed, was your address.Â
âIris.â
You looked at him for a second before sitting forward a little and began to remove your coat. âGlad you got my note.â
âHow the hell did you even-â
âI have my ways,â you smiled.Â
âHowâŠwhy did you help me?â
âCall it cashing in a favour.â
âFor me, or for you?â Lockwood questioned, watching as you sat back, folding your coat across your lap.Â
âYou needed out of somewhere,â you turned to look at him, âAnd I need in.â
âToâŠprison? You managed to get the note into that interrogation room. Iâm sure it shouldnât be difficult for you to-â
You laughed. âNo, I donât need to go to prison. I need into a Club.â
âWhat kind of club?â
âA club that Officer Krupkie back there, is a part of. Itâs exclusively available to high society.â
âThat officer is high society?âÂ
âNo. But he did marry into it. Which brings me to my point. The Club is exclusively available to members of high society that areâŠmarried.â
âWhy do you need it?â
âA case. My client has already secured me a place on the list, yourself as well since I gave them your name.â
âWhy did you give them my name?â Lockwood asked, growing more concerned about how many people knew about his âmarriageâ before he did.Â
âBecause, despite not knowing who you were when weâve met, I recognised your face in the paper.â you explained before quoting the newspaper. ââFrom Left, to Right; Lucy Carlyle, George Karim, andâŠAnthony Lockwoodâ. Figured weâd run into each other again, at some point before now and since you have a reputation behind you, as do I-â
âAnd what reputation is that? Thief?â
Your shoulders stiffened at his comment. âIf youâre talking about the cases I solved-â
âThat you stole.â Lockwood emphasised.Â
âHey, those cases were Solvers keepers. I had my clients, you had yours. I just got there sooner. Anyway,â you tried to remain on topic. âWith our reputations, thereâs a chance we can solve the case and I can finish this job.â
âWe?â
You tried your best not to sigh in defeat. âI need your help. Pretend to be my husband until we finish this job, and Iâll split the check with you, 80-20.â
â50-50.â Lockwood countered, despite not knowing what he was getting involved in.Â
So, to save time, you gave him your final offer, without lowering and lowering to get there.Â
â60-40.â
Lockwood gave no reply, so you took that to be an agreement.Â
âIâll split the check 60-40, and once weâve finished this job, Iâll be out of your hair.â
Lockwood didnât quite know what to say. Heâd seen you at least half a dozen times, youâd been a thorn in his side from day one and his âenemyâ or ânemesisâ from your second meeting when it seemed like you were taking cases from him on purpose.Â
Only, as his thoughts swirled around in his head, he realised the cab had stoppedâŠoutside Portland Row.Â
Stepping outside of the taxi, you seemingly already paid and the driver pulled away and down the street.Â
You were still there.Â
âItâs a good deal, Anthony. But, I understand if you have to talk it through with your team.â
You werenât suggesting he should talk with his team about it, you were making him talk to his team about it before accepting.Â
And he didnât even know about the case yet.
Lockwood wavered for a moment before finally ascending the steps and entering his home. You followed suit, your heels clicking on the concrete beneath them until you were met with the softer floors of his home.Â
Cozy was the first word that came to mind. Homely andâŠpeaceful although you knew youâd probably question that third one if you ever saw the team researching a case together.Â
âCome on in, I guess.â
Walking through the house, you entered into the kitchen where you saw Lucy Carlyle and George Karim sat at the breakfast table.Â
Lockwood seemed like a deer in headlights for a moment.Â
âLockwood!â Lucy exclaimed. âWhere the hell have you been?â
George was going to ask the same thing, until he spotted you.Â
âWho are you?â
Lockwood didnât quite know what to say, soâŠ
âGuys, meet Iris,â Lockwood turned and looked at you for a moment before eventually looking back at his friends. âMy wife.â
âHold on, hold on, hold onâŠwhat?â
You sighed a little, and got more comfortable in your seat. You had been sitting in the Portland Row kitchen for over an hour, explaining what happened between yourself and Lockwood in the police station and taxi cab.Â
âIf you all,â you looked to Lockwood for that, âagree on helping me with this case, youâll receive 40% of the earnings, so long as the case is solved.â
âThis checkâŠâ George began, âHow big are we talking? Because youâre being ominous about it, so that either means itâs a bad case or itâs really good money.â
âGeorge.â Lucy scolded despite wishing to know herself.Â
Again, you shifted in your seat and leaned more into the table, interlocking your fingers with themselves.Â
âAs a company, with 40% of the earnings, so long as the case is solved-â
âOh, just tell us.â
You looked between all three of them before looking back to George.Â
âÂŁ200,000.â
Silence then; âWhat?!â
âSo long as the case is solved.â you stressed.Â
âHold on,â Lockwood stopped you. âIf thatâs 40% then that meansâŠâ
âThe whole case is half a million.â you replied.Â
âWhat is so dangerous that the pay off is half a million?â Lucy asked.Â
Even Lucy knew, as much as half a million is seriously good money to be paid for a job, it also means it comes with a giant risk.Â
âI canât tell you unless you agree to take it on.â
âWhy would we agree-â
âBecause itâs on a need to know basis. You take the case, Iâll give you as much information as I can for your questions. Other than that, my lips are sealed.â
âSo, youâre telling me, that we donât know who weâre working for, we canât know what the job is, and there is a chance we donât get paidâŠand yet youâre still asking for our help?â George questioned.Â
âA risk comes with every job, as long as we solve the case, we get paid. I know my client and, since myself and Lockwood seem to take on similar cases, it shouldnât be too much to take on. Field work will mainly be down to myself and Lockwood since the club already has our names.â
âSo, weâll be doing research?â Lucy asked.Â
âMostly.â
âBut you just said only you and Lockwood will be in the field.âÂ
You shook your head. âMainly, weâll be working in the field, but we will still need your help. If you agree to take it on, I can get you both jobs working for the club. As Lockwood and myself have our ears and eyes on the residence, yourself and George will have yours on the staff.â
It took a while - longer than you thought - but they eventually agreed to help you with the case.Â
You could only pray it would take less time to solve the case, than it took them to make the decision about taking on the case.Â

Bloody Pardon 3
Summary: Anthony Lockwood x Fe!Reader -> You and Lockwood spend the night in bed together and the next day acting like the married couple the government, June and Aunt Vi think you are. But what happens when it starts to feel all too real?
Disclaimer: Snow, fluff, angst, one bed, nothing sexual, falling in love.
âSo.â
âSo.â
Both yourself and Lockwood had gotten ready for bed and were finally in, laying beside one another. Your arms were out of the covers and across your chest, Lockwood mirroring your own.Â
The lamps remained on, meanwhile, the rest of the house was cast into darkness.Â
Despite feeling sleepy all of five minutes ago, you were now wide away. Your mind was both running wild with thoughts of embarrassment and terror whilst also having nothing in your mind at all.Â
âHow long do you think itâll be before June figures us out?â
âIâd give it a couple hours. SheâŠshe doesnât seem to like me very much.â
âSo Iâve noticed. Though, when have you ever cared what people think of you?â
âWhen, if she discovers the truth, it could kill your aunt.â
âIt wonât kill Aunt Vi.â
âThen go and tell her the truth.â
Lockwood lay there before looking at you, swallowing hard.Â
âMaybe youâre right.â
âThank you.â
You turned and looked back at the ceiling, thinking for a moment before turning onto your side to face him.Â
âCan I ask you something?â
âOnly if I can ask you.â
You thought for a moment before nodding.Â
âHow much of the conversation did you hear? Between your Aunt and I, I mean.â
Lockwood was already looking at you but he looked up to the ceiling again before turning onto his side as he explained.Â
âMost of it.â
âHow much is most of it?â
âYou called me a reckless bastard.â Lockwood told you. âAnd a death-wished idiot and a-â
âOkay, I get the picture,â you held your hands out to Lockwood. âWhat did you want to ask me?â
âOkay, wellâŠâÂ
It took him a moment to gather himself before he asked the question, as if trying to find the best way to phrase it.Â
âEarlier, when we came in here, you told me you can barely lie to yourself. What did you mean by that?â
âWellâŠâÂ
You were trying your best to think of an excuse. Something that would sound at least remotely like the truth. But you couldnât. Your brain was starting to daze over things.Â
Slowly, you turned onto your back, trying to avoid his gaze.Â
âIâŠâ
From behind the door, someone walked down the hall and towards the bathroom. And you could have kissed them because it broke whatever moment had been building between you and Lockwood in the silence of the bedroom.
âWe should go to sleep.â you told him. âNight.â
Lockwood tried to stop you but you had already turned out the lamp on your side of the bed so, half sat up in bed, he turned off his own and faced his back against yours.
As the morning came around, shockingly, you found Lockwood was still fast asleep beside you. He also had come so close to you in the night, that his hand had held onto yours, despite him laying on his front.Â
It took you a few moments to prepare yourself to move and not wake him but once you left the warmth of his hand and his bed, you wrapped yourself up in a dressing gown and pushed your warm joggers back down your legs since theyâd ridden up in the night.Â
Quietly, you removed yourself from the bedroom before heading downstairs.Â
It was still dark out, despite it being early morning. Everyone, to your concern, was still in bed. That was why it came as such a shock when you opened up the kitchen door and found June with a cup of tea, sitting in the darkness, as if waiting for you like a Bond villain.Â
You tried to force your quick scream back down your throat by covering your mouth with your hand but she had already seen you coming a mile off.Â
âGood morning.â June said.Â
âG-Good morning, June. IâŠâ you swallowed. âI didnât think anyone was awake yet.â
âTheyâre not. Just me.â
âOkay then.â
For a moment, you thought about running back upstairs to Lockwood but then you remembered the tea and trying not to be terrified of June.Â
âI, uh, would you like another cup of tea?â
âSure.â
Youâd never been so nervous to be in your own home.Â
âAre you feeling alright since yesterday?â
You looked back and nodded, remembering what Lockwood had said to you. âOh, yes. Iâm feeling better, thank you.â
âThere was a message left for you on the machine, from last night.â
âReally?â
âYes, from one Miss Kirk.â
You stopped pouring the water.Â
âOh. Yes, sheâs-â
You were going to say a client, but June beat you to it.
âSheâs a divorce solicitor. Apparently your case is very, how did she put it? Unusual.â
You looked up to the shelves in front of you.Â
Shit. Shit. Shit. Shit.
âAre you really going to divorce him without telling him how you really feel?â
Quickly, you turned around and faced her. And there she sat, one hand on the table, her legs crossed, looking directly at you with a slightly smug, knowing smile.Â
âWhat do-â
âLet me tell you something, missy. You donât get to my age without noticing a couple things about people. One being, knowing a woman in love. It comes in handy when sheâs trying to take your husband from you but in your case, it comes in handy when figuring out if Vi has a good woman coming into her family.â
âWhy is that important to you?â
âBecause Vi is the closest thing Iâll ever have to a sister. And, if you must know, I think youâre a good woman. Anthony needs you in his life. Not only are you brutally honest with him when need be, but you also make him happy.â June explained. âI was there when he lost his family. I was also there when he lost his smile. And in the last twenty four hours, Iâve seen it come back tenfold.â
âItâs complicated.â
âYou like him and he likes you, and from what Iâve heard, nobody in this house has ever done anything the normal way around. So, you skipped the proposal part of the relationship? So what? You love him and he loves you. Why get divorced? Youâll only be married again within a couple years.â
With a slight sigh, you popped the kettle on again to boil. âIâll tell you how complicated it is.â
The next two hours were spent drinking tea and explaining everything to June from the case that brought it all around to the papers to finding out you were, in fact, a married couple.Â
âI just have one question,â June told you when you finished your tale. âWhy let him divorce you when you love each other?â
âJune,â you sighed.Â
âNo. You love him and he loves you. Maybe you didnât have the most conventional beginning, but despite all of it, you still love him. You should tell him.â
âJune, I-â
âTell him.â
Just then, the door to the kitchen opened and Violet entered, still tying her dressing gown around her.Â
âGood morning my dears.â
By her actions, Violet was none the wiser on the reality of the situation.Â
Half an hour later, Lockwood rose from bed, freshly washed and dressed. As he entered the kitchen, he greeted everyone with a smile, kissing your head as he passed to which you lent into him for a moment, and popped the kettle on.Â
âAny plans today, Ladies?â
Violet was planning to show June around London since it was her first proper visit in years and, after a small discussion, Lockwood pulled himself and you into joining them and showing them the best spots in town.Â
And, the day passed rather quickly.Â
You both showed Violet and June around places in London. You all grabbed tea together and, during the walk back to the park, a musician was playing in the square.Â
There weren't many people, but those that were there had decided to sit and enjoy the moment of the song.Â
There were no lyrics, but they werenât needed.Â
June and Violet took a moment to sit and listen as the musician blended songs together before continuing with Moon River. Meanwhile, Lockwood stepped out in front of you and held his hand out.Â
âDance with me?â
âReally?â
Anthony smiled. âReally.â
You looked at June and Violet, a little shocked and unsure on what to do but nodded at your husband when you found the two women smiling - June holding up two thumbs, as well.Â
For the next couple of minutes, you slow-danced with Lockwood in the square to Moon River all the while the air got a little colder and snow began to fall onto the ground. You felt yourself relax into his arms and your head dropped onto his shoulder whilst his own rested against yours.Â
And, for a moment, you closed your eyes and let yourself imagine it was real. That the marriage, and the dancing and the moment - that it was all real. None of it was for show or fake, despite what lay underneath was real.Â
For a moment, you let yourself believe it was true love.Â
And so did Lockwood.Â
For that short moment, he let himself dream that the papers hadnât been a mistake. That you had known all along. That you were both dancing at your actual wedding and you were dressed in white in a veil that probably would have taken hours to pick out due to the fact it would take more time to actually get you into a bridal store.Â
Lockwood knew you. You liked certain things and you were never afraid of anything.Â
Except for bridal stores.
You never fully told him the story, too embarrassed to admit it. But, he did know it included an old family friend, a five year plan and a bridal sale.Â
You never said anything more than that.Â
He imagined what it would be like, to see you walk down the aisle, to have all your family and his family to see you both come together.Â
But his mind couldnât dream any further because, as the song changed, you moved yourself from him.Â
âWe should probably go, before we all freeze.â
âYeah, youâre probably right.â

Bloody Pardon 4
Summary: Anthony Lockwood x Fe!Reader -> Yourself and Lockwood finally return home and it's time for Violet and June to leave, but will you tell Lockwood before it's too late?
Disclaimer: Sorry if there are any plot holes, it's been a while since I've updated. Mostly fluff, mentions of blackmail and denial. This is the final part.
By the time you all arrived home, the smell of Georgeâs cooking wafted through the kitchen.Â
He was home.Â
âGood, youâre back! Try this.â
Lockwood had just managed to help you get your coat off before George shoved his cooking spoon into your face and fed you the tasty, albeit burning hot soup.Â
âDoes it need more Thyme? I think it needs more Thyme but I canât find it on the shelves.â
âIâll help you find it.â
Lockwood and George disappeared with Violet hot on their tail leaving just you and June alone in the hallway.Â
âThat was very romantic.â
âJune, please.â
âNo, no. Iâm not saying anything.â June held up her hands before walking away. âJust tell him.â
You sighed as she made her way into the kitchen, ready to follow her only to be greeted by Kipps at the living room door.Â
âTell who what?â
âNothing.â
âNo, no. Come on, tell me.â
âItâs nothing, honestly.â
âIs this about you and Lockwood?â
You whipped around to find Lucy stood behind you with a Digestive in her hand, half eaten.Â
âOh my, god. It is.â Kipps replied, spotting the look on your face.Â
Fake denial.Â
âPlease, can both of you just drop it?â
âDrop what?â
You whipped around again, this time facing the kitchen where Lockwood was now standing behind you.
âOh, nothing Tony.â Kipps answered for you. âJust gossip, thatâs all.â
âAbout what?â
Lockwood mainly tried to look to you for answers, but you werenât for giving them up. Just like the night before.Â
You had the same look.Â
You were hiding something he desperately wanted to know, but he knew you well enough to know youâd just breeze past it and never mention it again.Â
And so you did.Â
âIs George almost finished? Iâm famished.â
Breezing past Lockwood, you entered the kitchen where you found Violet trying to carry a stack of plates over to the table.Â
âOh, here, let me do that.â
âOh, please, dear. Let me help. You and my Anthony have been so kind. At least let me set the table. Or else, youâll make me feel like an old woman. I can still do the Quickstep as quickly as I could when I was your age.â
âIâm sure you can, Aunt Vi.â Lockwood appeared by the door again.Â
âDonât mock me, boy.â
âI never would.â Lockwood appeared genuine.Â
Dinner went smoothly and before you knew it, it was time for Violet and June to head home.Â
George said his âgoodbyeâ before he left to go to the Archives to search up for the next case and both Lucy and Kipps came with Lockwood and yourself to drop them off at the train station. Â
Of course, Aunt Vi hugged everyone telling them all to keep in touch and June made her own version of goodbye to everyone before she pulled you aside.Â
âTell him. If not for yourself, then for him. That boyâŠevery time he looks at you he looks like heâs about to explode. Tell him. Tell him before itâs too late and he tries toâŠi donât knowâŠâmove onâ. You and I both know, deep down, that wouldnât work for either of you. Youâd both be too miserable without one another.â
âJune-â
âNo.â June said, firmly. âNo. You tell him, or I tell Vi the whole truth. In about a month, sheâll be expecting an update on your marriage. Now, that divorce lawyer is drawing up the papers for you to sign a week on Monday. That gives you two weeks to tell him the truth and I expect a letter and a real wedding photo from the both of you. If I donât, I will go to Vi.â
âIsnât that Blackmail?â
âPerhaps, but itâs for both of your wellbeing. And, besides, whoâs gonna lock an old lady like me up. Iâll break out within a day. They wouldnât find me until I wanted to be found.â
You couldnât help but show a smile.Â
âTwo weeks.â June warned you. âThatâs all youâre getting. Now, go back to your husband and tell him how you really feel about him.â
You nodded, unsure on what else to do.Â
âOh, here she is.â Violet hugged you so tight, you couldnât do anything else but hug her back. It was the kind of hug you still felt after she let go.Â
âOh, Iâm just so happy for the both of you. Anthony, I havenât seen you smile like this in ages.â
âWhat can I say? She makes me happy.â
âYou suit one another. Donât they, June? Donât they just suit one another?â
âLike a bride and groom on top of a wedding cake.â
You felt a pang of guilt in your stomach as Lockwood placed an arm around your waist and held you closer to him.Â
Ten minutes later, they were both on the train headed home. Meanwhile, Kipps and Lucy had decided to go on a day out, picking a random time and getting on that train.Â
This meant you and Lockwood were left alone.Â
Together.Â
On the way back, you both remembered that it was food shopping day. George had given you both a list of things to pick up on your way back. So, hopping into his car, Lockwood drove to the main supermarket where you both grabbed all the items George said he needed, plus some extra before driving home.Â
As winter drew in, closer and closer, the sky got darker earlier and George called ahead. A family emergency had come up and he was heading home. In fact, he was already at the train station.Â
Then, twenty minutes later, Lucy called.Â
Herself and Kipps were going to stay the night and get the train back in the morning.Â
So you and Lockwood were left alone.Â
Together.Â
Again.Â
By 6 oâclock in the evening, you and Anthony had eaten dinner and you were preparing the fire as he finished up some research on the current case.Â
Only, as the fire started producing heat and warming up the house, you popped in a VHS tape of Christmas in Connecticut. It had been right at the very back of the collection - it probably hadnât seen the light of day since it was first played.Â
The Title Credits began to roll just as Lockwood entered.Â
âCan we talk?â
âAbout what?â
âAboutâŠthe last couple of days.â
You went to speak as you stood up but Lockwood hurried forward to stand in front of you, in the hopes you would remain standing in your place and not leave the room.Â
âPlease. JustâŠI feel like Iâve been going crazy. I understand this whole thing is completely unconventional. I mean, most people start out with a first date and we just jumped straight to the wedding.â
âYouâre idea, might I add. Even that we didnât do.â
Lockwood cracked a smile for a moment but he didnât want you to try and divert what he was going to ask.Â
âI justâŠI want to ask you a question.â
âOkay.â
âAnd I want you to answer it. Truthfully.â Lockwood clarified. âAnd I donât want you to divert or try to run away from me. At least for the next five minutes,â he added when he saw your eyes flick to the hallway.Â
âOkay,â you eventually agreed.Â
âThe other night, you told me you could barely lie to yourself. What did you mean by that?â
âTonyâŠâ
âPlease.â The warmth of the fire reflected itself in Lockwoodâs eyes as he pleaded with you. âPleaseâŠI just need to know.â
You tried your hardest to shut off the memories of June and her Blackmail.Â
Two Weeks.Â
Two weeks you had, to tell him the truth.Â
âYou really donât want to, Tony. Please, can we just forget I ever said it?â
âNo.âÂ
He surprised you. You knew he could be stubborn, but it was rare he pushed this hard on a subject with you.Â
âWhat Aunt Vi said before. What I said before, about being happy. I meant it. Every word. And everything I told Aunt Vi and June about watching George teach you to danceâŠI meant every word.â Lockwood told you before taking your hand in his.Â
You didnât know what to say.Â
What would you say?
What could you say?
âIf you meant it in the way I thinkâŠI hope you meantâŠplease,â Lockwood said, adding your name. âI just need to know.â
âTony.â
âPlease.â
Taking a breath, you tried to find the courage to look at him, though your eyes seemed to dart elsewhere every now and again.Â
âIâŠwhat do you want me to say? That these last couple of days have confused me more than ever? That I canât wrap my head around whatâs real and what not? Tony, before I found out you and I are married, it was clear. Everything was clear. I knew what my feelings were for you, I knew what I could keep from everyone, including myself. But nowâŠnow I canât even do that. I know I have feelings for you, Tony. But that doesnât matter. Because not only are you my friend, but we also work together. Any feelings that I tried to convince myself arenât realâŠthey wonât stop feeling real.â
âDo you have feelings for me?â
You went silent, looking to his hand that grasped onto yours.Â
âBecause Iâm in love with you and I need to know if you feel the same.â
Looking him in the eye, Anthony got the confirmation he needed.Â
âI fell in love with you the moment I saw you dancing with George. And, even though the whole marriage thing was accidental, I canât lieâŠit took everything in me to not go against calling the lawyer. And when I was dancing with you in the squareâŠit was like everything I had wished for.â
âWhat if it doesnât work out?â
âWeâve stuck together this long, even before we got married.â
You cracked a smile and laughed, âYeah, thatâs true.â
âSo, is that a yes?â
âA yes to what?â
Trying to hide his smile, Lockwood kept hold of your hand before lowering himself onto one knee.Â
Saying your full name, along with his surname, which sent butterflies-in-a-tornado all around your stomach, Anthony Lockwood asked you;
âWill you stay married to me for as long as you love me?â
You smiled, âYes, Tony. I will remain married to you.â
With a grand smile, Tony stood and kissed you, pulling you in closer than ever.Â
After a moment, the back of your legs hit the sofa and he lowered you down carefully before quickly joining you, the kiss breaking just enough for the both of you to catch a breath.Â
A week later, June received a professional wedding photo of both you and Anthony in the back garden where Lucy had decorated the place in fairy lights and different whimsical pieces that made the entire day feel like it was plucked out of a book.Â
On that same morning of you preparing her letter, Lockwood came into the study, wrapping his arms around your shoulders before kissing your cheek and resting his head on yours.Â
âWhat are you doing?â
âSending June confirmation that her Blackmail worked.â
âWhat?â
âShe knew. She knew the whole thing was fake, wellâŠkinda.â
âI beg your bloody pardon?â
You laughed a little at his reply before watching him pull up a seat to be next to you. âShe knew. The second morning she was here, I found her in the kitchen. She knew about the whole thing. But she knew I loved you. And she knew you loved me.â
âAnd the blackmail?â
âI had two weeks to tell you the truth, or else sheâd tell Violet.â
âWow. I knew she could be tough but Iâd have thought she would have drawn the line at blackmail.â
âAnd now Iâm sending her confirmation.â
âOkay.â Lockwood kissed you twice before standing up. âCup of tea and some toast.â
âLove some.â
âOkay.â Lockwood smiled before coming back and kissing you once again.

Wake Me Up (And Hold On To Me)
Summary: Lockwood x Fe!Reader (third person) -> She suffers with nightmares. Lockwood has a feeling he knows why sheâs awake every night. So, he finally does something about it.Â
Disclaimer: Not specifically mentioned but characters are aged up a little more than in the show. Nightmares, angst, fluff, love etc.
Sweat dripped down her forehead as she sat up. She wouldnât be surprised if there was a water-shadow left on her bedsheets from where she had been lay. It was worse this time. Constant running, screaming, shouting and yetâŠnothing but silence.Â
Across the room, Lucy lay fast asleep. It was like trying to wake the dead with Lucy, but sometimes sheâd wake in the night and sheâd lay completely still. Most times, Lucy would fall back asleep. Maybe the sounds came from outside. It was London, after all.Â
But not tonight.Â
Her screams and terrified yells hadnât woken her roommate.Â
Thank god.Â
She took a moment to look around her.Â
She wasnât in the graveyard, or at her childhood home. She was home, at Portland Row. The moon was shining itâs light into her room from the window, a small breeze flowing in from where Lucy must have lifted it open. It provided a cool breeze to her skin.Â
Taking a few breaths, she lifted the covers from herself and placed her feet flat on the ground, looking around her a bit more.Â
No ghosts. No hunters. No spirits trying to kill her and her friends.Â
Sheâs safe. Sheâs at home, at 35 Portland Row.Â
She wrung her hands over themselves for a few moments. Her heart rate was slowly lowering to a pace that didnât feel like her heart was about to burst from her chest.Â
Standing after a few minutes, she was careful to avoid the creaks in the wooden floor. It didnât take much thinking, though. This had now become second nature.Â
Slowing herself down, she opened up the door and closed it behind her. She took her time to admire the pictures on the wall and the feel of her home.Â
Sheâs safe. Sheâs home.Â
She felt the carpet beneath her feet, leading the familiar path to another bedroom.Â
This was second nature, too. Now, at least.Â
Before, she would turn left instead of right. Sheâd sit in the large arm chair, watching the moon dance its beams across the bookshelves before the sun would do the same. Finally, she would go back up stairs, take the yet again familar path to her bed, avoiding the creaks, get dressed and head downstairs for a cup of coffee.Â
No-one knew any different.Â
But Lockwood did.Â
Heâd known for a while. Although, he didnât know what it was exactly that kept her up. Insomnia? Too much tea? Too strong of a coffee in the day?Â
Wrapping her hand around the door handle, she slowly crept inside before she reached her side of the bed.Â
Lockwood woke for a moment. She lifted the covers and he helped her. Slipping inside, she lay with her back to his chest before she felt his arm lay across her before he took her hand in his, holding her with a gentle-yet-secure grip.Â
Iâm here. It told her. Itâs okay. Youâre safe. Youâre home.Â
The pair drifted off together, their breaths syncing as her heart beat calmed in order to match his.Â
If only heâd done something earlier, this could have been the solution a long time ago.Â
He knew something had been keeping her up. After all, whenever he woke in the night himself, he could see the light in the library from under the door. He never did anything at first. After all, theyâd had a busy day. Maybe the adrenaline was still running.Â
But then he began to hear the phone ring - or, at least, he thought he did. One ring and the line would go dead. But, in the morning, there was a notepad filled with contact numbers and most of the research was done before they even sat down for breakfast.Â
Sheâd lie and say they called whilst he was in the bathroom. Not that they had called at 2 in the morning and sheâd already been downstairs in the living room watching and old tape of Casablanca in silence.Â
Except, no matter how many times heâd ask if she was okay or if she had even slept, sheâd simply laugh it off. Sometimes, sheâd go to bed early - it was the only way she could get at least a few hours of sleep before the nightmares kicked in.Â
But she always made sure no-one knew; or sheâd at least try. Lie still when they woke up. Act as if she was asleep on the sofa at night when they all gathered to watch a movie when in fact she was more awake than the rest of them.Â
However, when Lucy went away for the weekend to visit Norrie and George went to visit his mum and dad for a few days, thus leaving Lockwood and herself alone at Portland Row, there was no excaping his questions.Â
Lockwood had been out for most of the day, gathering and paying for more stock meanwhile she was at home fixing the shelves of the library that had recently fallen down. Sheâd told them time and time again that they needed new shelves. The wood was old and starting to rot.Â
So, with George away, it gave her enough time to reorganize and fix what needed fixing in the home without someone being in the way. As much as she loved them.Â
Lockwood got back around 9 and after calling out for her a few times, he went in search for her to find her fast asleep in the library. Everything was fixed and looking like new. The books still had to be shelved, but they could do that tomorrow.Â
Pulling the blanket from the back of the sofa, she lay it over her before switching out the light and placing the fire guard up. He didnât exactly shut the door, but just enough to block the light out from the hallway.Â
As the hours passed, Lockwood labeled all the stock and filled in the papers he needed to before George came back to strangle him. But, as he began to climb the stairs and switch off the hall light, he could hear mumbling.Â
It was incoherant. Barely audible if someone had been speaking to him. But in the dead silence of the home, he could hear it.Â
Standing in the door way, he pushed the library door open. He could hear it louder now.Â
âRunâŠnoâŠletâŠlet go of meâŠâ
She got louder as he got closer and before she knew it, she woke to find Lockwood kneeling on the ground beside her.Â
âHey, hey. Youâre okay. Youâre safe. Youâre with me. Hey, look at me. Itâs me. Youâre okay. Youâre safe.âÂ
Lockwood could see the change in her eyes. From fighting to recognition. He visibly saw her shoulders drop before she put her head in her hands and swung her legs so her feet were on the ground.Â
Now, she noticed the blanket.Â
He must have covered her up.Â
âLet me get you some water.â
Moments later, Lockwood came back in with a glass of cold water and handed it to her.Â
âWhat happened?â
âNothing.â She tried to deny it.Â
âYou were having a nightmare.â He pointed out. âThatâs not nothing.â
A few moments of silence passed over both of them. Until, finally, he spoke again.Â
âIs this what has been keeping you up at night?â
She looked to him, shocked, for a moment. She had been trying to be silent.Â
âIâm fine, Lockwood.â
He shook his head. âNo, youâre not.â
âItâs nothing I canât handle.â
âWell, itâs not exactly going great if you canât sleep,â he pointed out, again. âIs this how you get everything done, in a morning? Why youâre up at the crack of dawn?âÂ
He already knew the answer but the fact that she looked down at her feet, trying to look anywhere but at him was confirmation enough.Â
He placed his hand in hers, âHey,â she looked at him. âNext time it happens, wake me up.âÂ
The heat was slowly dying now from the fire, but it didnât matter because she could already feel her cheeks burning. Maybe it was embarrassment? She didnât want anyone knowing what she was dreaming about at night. She didnât want to be a burden on any of her family. They all had a job to do.Â
âYou shouldnât be going through this alone.â
It took her a moment, but eventually she nodded. She tried to look down again but she felt his hand on her cheek, making her look up. It took him a moment, before he moved closer and placed a kiss on her forehead.Â
âLetâs go to bed.â
It was a week before she had another nightmare that woke her up so early that it wasnât even the next day. Any time she closed her eyes, the images and the noises would come flooding back to her.Â
That was the first night she went to his room.Â
Neither of them said anything. He just pulled the covers back and she slipped inside, leaning into him. He asked her a few questions, holding her hand against his chest whilst two of his fingers wrapped around her wrist. He could feel her pulse. It was racing.Â
That same night, he placed a kiss to her temple before pulling her closer.Â
It was the first night either of them had fallen into such a deep sleep, George had to knock on the door when passing to wake them up.Â
Neither George or Lucy had any idea what was going on. When Lucy was in the bathroom, and George was in the kitchen, sheâd rush up the stairs, careful to avoid the creaks before quickly putting on some fresh clothes, running a brush through her hair, washing her face in the sink and heading back downstairs.Â
By the time she was downstairs, Lockwood was dressed and Lucy had come downstairs running a brush through her hair.Â
Everything continued on as normal.Â
And now, months after that night in the libraryâŠthe nightmares were becoming less and less intense. Less waking up and feeling as if she was still stuck in the nightmare.Â
They were getting easier to deal with.Â
Sometimes, George or Lucy would see the pair come out from his bedroom but neither asked any questions about it.Â
The way they both saw it, both Lockwood and herself look rested. They were better on the job - more alert and less on edge - and they seemedâŠhappier.Â
Relaxed.Â
Some nights, she wouldnât have to sneak down the stairs and into his room due to him taking her hand leading her up the stairs. They were both the only two awake anyway.Â
And, as she climbed in beside him and he switched off the lamp and they both listened to the movement of distant cars outside, still bustling about. Even if it was way past cerfew, some still broke it; whether they worked for DEPRAC or not.Â
She would feel his arms wrap around her, holding her as if she was his home. Maybe it was a stretch to think so but she knew he was herâs.Â
In his arms, at 35 Portland Road, sheâs safe. Sheâs home and nothing could hurt her.Â
Not even her nightmares.
