hey! im starting uni this year and am studying comm/law at unsw. law has always been an idillic dream but over the last few months ive come to the realisation that i wont enjoy law that much? for hsc i did stem subjects as i dislike humanities, but when i did the LAT and got an extremely good mark, i convinced myself that i’m suited to law? i’m thinking of trying law for 2 terms then switching into actuary/compsci if i decide i dont like law but i’m conflicted as i dont want to waste time ://

This ans is /that late/ that you may have already completed your first year anon (sorry! Also f covid!)

Law is group in with a bunch of humanities subjects, but it’s very different. Law doesn’t lend itself much to long form academic writing - exams usually consist of a specific problem set and maybe the residual one or two traditional essay qus.

You won’t know whether you enjoy studying law until you try it.

(And as an aside, studying law is not the same as practising law, and you won’t know whether you like doing that until you do it)

LAT means nothing- it has no bearing on whether you will or will not enjoy studying law because the exam itself is nothing like your assignments or your exams. I wouldn’t take that as a guide.

Hell, you may even enjoy law given that there’s a formulaic structure to it/ logic to it similar in some ways to STEM.

I’m just so proud that you noticed what you were feeling. The fact that you were conscious about it holds you in good stead. What id say is keep listening to what you like, what you dislike. What aspects of law do you enjoy? Is it something that you can get from comp sci? Conversely what do you enjoy about comp sci? Both study wise, practically and (although it’s v hard) in the future.

I don’t think it’s wasted time at all. Because figuring these things out early is an investment into your longevity - in whatever career path you choose. It’s better to use two semesters up now than twenty years down the line.

Remember law isn’t a short term commitment either. It’s a degree + college of law (if you choose to be admitted as a practitioner in Australia) plus a couple years of restricted practice depending on your jurisdiction. That could add up to 6+ years.

Two semesters isn’t that long compared to that.

For more practical advice I’d defs get in touch with someone at your careers centre, a mentor or even someone in the years above you. Ask them the questions that you’ve asked yourself- share your doubts. They may be able to add a little more data to help you make your decision.

wow your ranks are so good, do you have any tips to improve rank? like if I'm only in the top half or so?

Top half is still great! I’m sure if you maintain that you will do well. However, if you do want to improve your rank, we’re in the same boat. The advice I use is basically to:

- Stay on top of everything. Assignments, homework and future exams. I’m a bit ‘extra’ and try to ask for assessment timetables at the beginning so I can plan when and what I am going to study (especially since many people have told me Term 2 is wild, and Term 3 is ‘the worst’ term for HSC students because of trials and other exams.)

- Study that syllabus inside and out. Every single science practical and secondary source dotpoint, case study for eco, business, geography, CAFS (or whatever subject you do, I don’t actually do any of these ones) and personalities/dates/events for history. For English, know that AOS rubric and the modules. That’s where the exam questions come from. If you study the syllabus (and maybe a little more), you can answer any question thrown at you.

- Don’t waste study periods. I am so guilty of this but they help a ton to finish homework and study. Do not sit in the room where the rest of the Year 12s are. Go to the school library or something and study alone. 

- Ask your teacher for help. Super important to always go to your teacher for specific points in the syllabus, and more often than not they will volunteer lunchtimes/afterschool to help you. 

- Know your mistakes. If you do maths, I have a link to studying here and how to make your mistakes palm card. If it is humanities, know where you go wrong in essays (whether it be your syntax, structure, analysis etc.). For science know the silly mistakes and other things like that.

I hope this helped a bit, even though it was more a guide on how to study, rather than improve rank. My logic is: study well = better in exams = better rank. Good luck with your HSC and feel free to message me anytime!
