Aubergine II - August 2022

I was in the zone in August 2022 and keen to revisit some older tracks that I'd never quite been satisfied with. I've mentioned before how they hang around in the back of my mind, eternal unfinished business. Aubergine was on the list.

The music I was happy with, other than the beat. The backbone of the track I had made using ReBirth RB-338 at the height of my ReBirthing skills, so I wasn't about to mess with that. I had also added lots of electronic and sitar samples and some vocals I randomly found on the internet somewhere. With the vocals, I liked the sound and the pace, but not the content so much.

So I removed the vocals, and the beat, and added new vocals from Looperman. I loved the angry lyrics (KMRS), especially the rage against the establishment, something I feel deeply myself. The drawling chorus (Shamoozey) felt completely at the opposite end of the tone spectrum, providing a satisfying kind of balance.

Then I found a beat I liked another unfinished business track was checked off the list.

This is really nice - the carousel like start belies the vocal choices and especially the nice indi electro beat that goes with the rap for Kmrs… and the Shamoozey adds another wonderful (almost tom waits like) element. It really works well but you'd think it would be incongruous - that is what creativity is all about hey : )

Hello Vylet, I find your music inspiring to me. as I am beginning to get into music production myself. With that being said I find it very difficult to find a place to start and I don't really have a direction. Is there any advice that you could give beginners like me on trying to get a foothold in music? Like sources, or things that should have a higher priority in learning?

the thing i tell most ppl is to start learning with whatever interests you the most first. for example, if you rlly like drums and rhythms, start by experimenting with drum beats and programming stuff and performing things like that. if you really like the idea of arranging things into a song, get some loops and shit and just feel out how to arrange things. as you get proficient in one aspect, start throwing in more things that you're interested in.

for me, i really liked composing and arranging when i started. so i didnt care about how good the instruments were or how to mix anything or how to refine anything. i just focused on taking instruments, composing things with them, and arranging on a timeline. then i got super interested in sound design so i started to learn more about how synths ACTUALLy worked, and how to use effects to change things.

whats cool is you can actually find lots of old sample cd's archived on archive .org [just google archive . org sample cds]. so tons of free samples there. looperman is another classic sample resource. freesound also. you can pay splice for sample credits and u can have a certain amount of sounds for a monthly fee. but u can also just sample songs too. hey! you can sample my songs. that's always safe :3

i always find andrew huang's videos to be great for beginners

fact magazine has a great series called against the clock where you can watch ppl make a song in a few mins and observe workflows and ideas

even if u dont use live, ableton has some great videos and seminars on making music and stuff.

if you need a DAW, bitwig is available on rent-to-own so you dont need to commit to smth

and if you need some third party plugins, check out vital , ob-xd , klanghelm , and analog obsession for some cheap and free stuff. i say this everytime ppl ask for software recommendations but Vital is such an awesome free synth. i use it on almost every single song i make!!!!

also sylenth is one of my fav synths after over 10 years of using it and it's also on rent-to-own

everything on kilohearts is rent-to-own and i love all their shit too.

Alone (Demonic Mix) - January 2022

After a very long break I finally got back into music making in 2022. I had started messing around with a few samples in Lockdown in 2020, but didn't get around to finishing anything.

This was a track I worked on a few years earlier, with different vocals. I was never totally happy with it, and that hung around in the back of my mind for years, I had unfinished business with this track!

So I revisited it and found Kara's wonderful rendition of Alone by Edgar Allan Poe on ccMIxter. It was a perfect fit. I did think about adding the original vocals back in, with one on each channel à la The Murder Mystery, but decided against it as I had messed around with them so much trying to mask them, and couldn't find the original.

The demonic voice in the background is actually a slowed down sample of speech from a well known Sci-Fi movie. At one point it reveals itself.

like i like it alot but i want like. more acoustic sounds and the way i make music rn is just taking samples off of looperman and chopping them to shit which is cool but having like an acoustic drum track with it woukd be dope as fuck (or yk acoustic sounding enough)

I did a revamp of Seu Pedido É Concedido! In the soundtrack I'll give the songs names in portuguese, english and japanese, I'm not fluent in japanese yet but I am in portuguese and english! Just so you know you can translate it, in case you want to know the meanings

So yeah it's basically a completely different song and it sounds way better now, with different phases. And it fits what I was going for better imo too!
