8MM 2 (2005)

I was surprisingly entertained by 8MM but of course, I didn’t expect its direct-to-video successor to be on the same level. Still, I hoped. I’d wager $50 that when this "sequel” was made, it wasn’t even called 8MM 2. This is a generic, agonizingly predictable thriller capped off with a ludicrous conclusion.

Remember how Nicholas Cage's character had to scrape the underworld's belly to verify the authenticity of a snuff film? We go from that level of intensity to a couple being blackmailed after someone films their ménage à trois. Tish (Lori Heuring) and David (Johnathon Schaech) are vacationing in Budapest when they meet Risa (Zita Görög), a local model. After some steamy business, they receive emails threats that could ruin David’s career.

When it comes to bad movies, my rule is “If you can’t be good, at least be sleazy”. This film is very sleazy. I don’t know what it is about films shot in Budapest, but they’re filled to the brim with nudity. I’ve seen XXX films with fewer exposed breasts than this film. So it’s got that going for it… and nothing else.

This is the kind of thriller that makes you accidentally spill your drink. You’ll be slurping away, trying to amuse yourself while these idiotic protagonists try to figure out where Risa disappeared to, who is blackmailing them, etc. when one of two things will happen. Either you’ll start getting bored and that cup will start tipping too much, or you’ll accidentally knock your cup over when you’re furiously throwing insults at the screen. I know that without this blackmail plot there wouldn’t be a movie and that the ending justifies some of the abnormal behavior we see, but these are the most gullible, most easily blackmailed people you could find. I’ve never been blackmailed myself, but I’d like to think that even if footage of me strangling a puppy was going to be possibly leaked I’d have more sense than these bozos.

This is one predictable story. The only uncertainty is which clichéd ending it will pick? If there's a twist, there are three suspects. Either Tish, David or Tish’s father, who would be blackmailing his future son-in-law to keep him away from his daughter. Either way, we’re not going to see anything inspired. I’m no plot twist-detecting wizard. In general, I’m not good at figuring movies out, but I had this whole thing mapped out - ridiculous as it is. When you find out what the deal was with this blackmail scheme, it raises dozens of questions. So many things could have gone wrong the people involved should have saved themselves the trouble and bought some lottery tickets. With their luck, they could've made twice as much money as they did blackmailing our heroes.

If I had to recommend the film to someone, it would be… myself when I was about 16 if I were living on some parallel universe where everyone's IQ is cut in half. There’s so much nudity present that simple-minded males (or females who swing that way) might not be able to connect the dots within 15 minutes. There’s not even an 8mm film in 8MM 2, what a rip-off!
