Career resources from the LSA annual meeting
Two useful linguistics jobs links from panels at the LSA annual meeting in Portland.
Linguists in Industry panel
Skills – not your research topic – are key.
When you get asked about what you do, probably the first thing that comes to mind is your subfield within linguistics. In industry, you need to lead with your skills. ‘Doing linguistics’ is not a skill recognizable to most future colleagues. Think instead about what you do every day when you do linguistics.
Tatiana Libman, senior linguist at Google, listed some skills that give linguists an edge: Study design, project management, the ability to collect and analyze structured and unstructured data.
(MLC’s hint: all of these can go on your resume, rather than being hidden under a ‘research’ heading).
Read the rest here.
There's also a list of linguists with various industry/alt-academic jobs at the bottom of the post, which can give you some ideas.
Special session on the academic publishing process in linguistics
On making your term paper or thesis into a publishable article:
• A long literature review to show that you know the literature is generally unnecessary in a journal article • You can assume your audience will know enough about the topic you are writing on that they won’t need a “Topic X for Dummies” section
Slides and typical timelines for linguistics journals available here.

LSA2015 Tumblinguists meet-up
Here is the sort-of plan!
Tomorrow, Friday, January 9th, after the poster session (12 noon Pacific Time) there will be a tumblinguists meetup, meeting in the lobby of the Main Building of the Hilton. I hope to be there, and (as far as I know), allthingslinguistic will be there. Please let us know if you plan to join us so that we can keep an eye out for you! (It's gonna be busy!)

My girl crush forever, my favorite model, Amna Ilyas, has finally won Model of the Year at the Lux Style Awards, 2015. I had no doubts about this girl’s talent or ability, but it is her acceptance speech that, again, validated my love for her..
“When I started modeling, there were people who liked me and told me that I am beautiful.. however, there were people who said I couldn’t be a model because I was too dark skinned. So for everyone who said I couldn’t be a good model because of the color of my skin, this is your answer. Thank you Lux for helping me believe in myself. This goes out to all the dark-skinned girls.”
I wish more celebrities in Pakistan took the opportunity to use platforms like LSA to awaken social consciousness and responsibility instead of perpetuating regressive beauty ideals.
P.S. Amna wore a custom Khaadi Khaas power suit at the award ceremony.
You go girl!

Am having a lot of fun so far but am SO overwhelmed. I wouldn't have realized I'm this overwhelmed if it weren't for the fact that I'm failing to do things that I'm normally really good at, like figuring out directions and knowing which stop to get off at on the train. This is my first LSA and there's so much going on and I'm afraid I'll miss something because I have no idea what to expect... halp??

Note
Hey Anam do you know if Lux Style Awards have been uploaded anywhere yet and where I can watch them? I can't seem to find a full length version.
The livestream version of it is on youtube. But you’ll have to wait for the full and edited version to air on some channel, most likely ARY.

Popularizing linguistics via tumblr at the LSA and other conferences
I'm going to be talking about linguistics on tumblr as part of a panel on popularizing linguistics via online media at the LSA annual meeting in Portland, Oregon. The entire abstract is online here, and includes some names you'll probably recognize (Douglas S. Bigham, Anne Curzan, Michael Erard, Michael Maune, Arika Okrent, Neal Whitman, Ben Zimmer). Here's my part of the abstract:
The community of linguists and linguistically-interested users on tumblr, organized around the tags #linguistics and #tumblinguists, is active, highly engaged, and equally interested in wug jokes as in explanations of Canadian Raising or scope ambiguity. As the author of the popular tumblr blog All Things Linguistic, I discuss how linguistic outreach happens on tumblr, a site whose young demographics and unique system of category tags and extensive reblogging make it easy for information to spread between linguistically-themed tumblr blogs and general purpose ones. This, in turn, is fostering a community where a broader exposure of basic linguistic ideas can lead to increased participation in external linguistics events such as NACLO, linguistics course enrollment, and also serve as a springboard, increasing the number of linguists in the public eye.
But I don't just want to rely on my own impressions of linguistics on tumblr, so I've made a survey here that you can fill out with as much or as little detail as you like. There are no particular qualifications necessary to fill it out -- if you're reading this, you count!
I can't promise that I'll use all responses, as I'll only have so long to talk, but at any rate, I'll put my slides from the talk online so you can all see them. And as soon as you submit a response, you can see a summary of everyone else's, because that's more fun!
Since I was making a survey anyway, I also figured I'd include some questions about linguistics-related jobs that can hopefully go into the linguistics jobs series. So you can answer as much or as little as you like about job-related questions also at the same survey link.
You'll also be able to find me at the LSA organizing a Wikipedia editathon for linguistics-related articles, as well as livetweeting from my personal twitter when I can get online: the hashtag is #lsa2015.
The whole LSA annual meeting schedule is online now and worth checking out, but just to highlight other outreach-related sessions that I'm not involved with, there's this one about linguistics in science festivals, museums, and schools and this one about linguists working with related professions.
--
There's now an NWAV meetup in Chicago planned for 8:30 on Saturday night, October 25th, which works for everyone I've talked to (but feel free to come even if you didn't express an interest earlier). Let's plan to meet in the lobby of the conference hotel, and potentially go from there to somewhere that serves food. Even if you're not attending the conference, any tumblinguists in the Chicago area are welcome! If you want to make sure we wait for you, please let me or someone else know you're coming. And if you want to follow along with the conference from home, people should be tweeting about it with the hashtag #nwav43.
--
I'm considering also going to NELS in Boston the following weekend, October 31st. Anyone going to be around?
