Don’t mind me just thinking about the fact that it’s Rook’s voice that pulls Lucanis back when Spite wants to go through the Eluvian.
And then we get these from Spite:
“He’ll listen. He always listens to you.”
“We had. A deal. He’ll listen. To you.”
And this from Lucanis:
“Would you talk to me? Your voice is a comfort.”
That man is clinging to every word Rook says at all times. Always listening to their bad puns, listening to them yap late at night in the dining hall over drinks and desert and getting lost in the sound of their voice and the way their laugh fills up the room with warmth. Rook’s voice is a tether for Lucanis to keep him sane and grounded when it all becomes too much.
#and then when rook is gone#ooo#rookanis#lucanis dellamorte#lucanis and rook#the your voice is a comfort line okaaaaaaaaaaaay it’s everything to me#that man loves rook sm

This Isn't A Good Idea
Lucanis x Rook x Spite || 1.5k words
on ao3 too
summary: just a little scene expansion. couldn't resist thinking about what Lucanis and Spite went to talk about after that almost kiss.
~~~~~
Lucanis shudders back into his body, standing in his room. He shakes his head to clear the layer of fog over him. Rook is several paces away, watching.
“Rook?”
“You were sleepwalking.”
“Spite was sleepwalking.” Insufferable demon.
“He didn’t go anywhere. Nothing happened,” Rook offers, as if that makes up for what his negligence has allowed.
A frustrated twitch of Lucanis’ head. “I didn’t want you to see that. Again.”
“Nothing I’m seeing makes me want to look away,” Rook replies, a soothing balm to his anxiety.
“How do you always do that?” The marvel filters through his words like sunlight. Threatening to illuminate what should remain in the dark.
“Do what?” She asks, brows scrunched in confusion.
“Break apart my perfectly gathered clouds of doom.” He gives her the truth, which he so often subterfuges to hold her at arm's length. “You deserve better than to deal with my mess.” A warning, a plea.
A glint sparks in Rook’s eyes. “You’re more than what you’re going through. And you wear it well.” A heat bubbles beneath her words, warming his blood.
“This isn’t a good idea.” Lucanis steps towards her anyway, a demon pulled in by the thing it craves.
“Sometimes a bad idea is better.” Her voice crackles over him, smoldering charcoal on the coldest night.
“You like to walk a little close to the edge.” Lucanis’ voice drops low of its own accord. He leans into her space, places his arm against the wall by her head. A physical barrier to hold his distance from her. He does not feel his usual control over his actions. It’s the wanting guiding him now. He’s so tired of fighting it. She makes it so hard to fight it, with those eyes always looking at him as if she sees him, all of him.
Rook matches him, leaning in, a seductive smile curling her lips. She taps a finger to his chest. “So do you.”
“At least I know I’m doing it.” Does he, though? Know what he’s doing right now? As his head tilts to meet Rook’s. As he inhales her sweet, earthy scent.
Melon…and woodsmoke, Spite whispers. A thrum of pleasure radiates off the demon, blending with Lucanis’ own elation in the moment.
Lucanis halts, drawing back from Rook. “I…need to clear my head.” He walks backwards away from her, horrified with himself. “Excuse me.”
He exits before she can respond, not looking back. He can’t bear to see if there is hurt on her face, anger, or perhaps just a sorrowful resignation. He grows weary of denying himself, but he’s not sure what he would do if she ceased giving him something to deny.
Lucanis walks briskly, climbing the stairs to the balcony outside of the dining hall. Air, he needs air. He needs to chase away the smell of Rook lingering on his skin.
Spite hisses his frustration against Lucanis’ teeth. Why. Did you leave?
Lucanis ignores the demon, hands gripping hard onto the balcony’s railing.
We want Rook! Go back to Rook!
“No! You don’t get to want anything. You don’t get to have anything!” Lucanis’ jaw hurts from how hard he grits his teeth.
Why. Deny us this? Spite asks, genuine curiosity in his question.
It is not safe for her. Lucanis can’t believe he’s having an argument about a woman with a demon.
At first, he had tried not to pay attention to Spite’s growing obsession with Rook. But whenever he was in the same room as her, Spite was there, banging against his mental cage, demanding to speak to Rook. Bloodying Lucanis’ nose when he refused the demon. Even when Spite was quiet, Lucanis could feel him tracking Rook’s movements. A hunter stalking unsuspecting prey. It chilled Lucanis’ blood. He didn’t know what Spite’s intentions were and he refused to give the demon the chance to act upon them.
This couldn’t keep happening. Lucanis could not lose control over Spite. Nightmare visions of surfacing to consciousness, finding himself hovering over her unmoving body haunted his every waking moment. You didn’t get to kiss a woman you were secretly terrified of murdering in your sleep, Lucanis reprimands himself.
Why not…it is what…you want, Spite coaxes. Smells so good…
Like melon and woodsmoke, Lucanis registers Spite’s earlier whisper.
“Stop smelling her, demon.” Lucanis wants to bash himself against closed fists. Anything to dull the demon's leisurely stroll through his mind and senses.
Can’t stop…you won’t stop…
Lucanis sighs. Therein lies the crux of his problems. Was it Spite who was obsessed with Rook…or him? Did Spite’s eyes follow her in every room, or did Lucanis’? It’s not the first time he’s faced this revelation.
From the moment Rook broke into his watery prison, he'd been intoxicated by her. A woman so fearless that she dared to stand against gods. Her own gods, even. Dared to believe in others to do the same. She'd come for the Demon of Vyrantium. When she found a literal demon in his place, she did not bat an eye. She has never once looked at him like he is an abomination.
Yes… Rook understands us, Spite persuades.
“That doesn't mean anything! It's my responsibility to protect her.” As a fellow Crow, of course. Viago would take out his own contract on Lucanis if anything happened to Rook. Then Viago would fulfill it himself, slowly.
Protect her? From what? Spite sounds so earnestly surprised by this that it gives Lucanis pause.
“From your spite.” Lucanis feels mildly absurd, reminding a demon of its nature.
Another hiss from Spite. I do not want to hurt Rook!
Lucanis wishes he had a mirror so he could stare at the demon behind his eyes. “Then what do you want?” Lucanis asks cautiously. He’d assumed that, even a demon infatuated, would not diverge from its inherent nature.
Spite’s contemplative grumble rumbles through his mind. Melon and woodsmoke… The demon breathes. Venom and vengeance in her heart…
Lucanis waits but Spite says no more. So you like the way she smells…and her anger?
Spite hums his affirmative. We like our blades…striking with hers. We like our malice…drawing blood.
This, Lucanis has felt too. How their steps synced in a dance of retribution against the Venatori. Every swing of her blade a wrathful reckoning. Lucanis caught himself daydreaming more than once about what it might be like to take a contract with her after all of this was behind them. What it might be like to take every contract with her.
An unfamiliar and alarming feeling for Lucanis to deal with. He didn't think of people like this, with yearnings for long term plans. By the time he caught himself in daydreams of Rook, it was too late to unravel whether he or Spite had felt it first. It hardly mattered anyway, it didn't change what Lucanis felt and it couldn't change what he must do about it. Which was nothing.
You're scared, Spite observes.
“I'd be a fool not to be wary of a demon,” Lucanis snaps back.
True, Spite acquiesces. But not…with Rook. I would not hurt her. The demon pauses for a moment. I would not hurt something…so important to you.
Lucanis is baffled. “Why? You are Spite. It's in your nature to hurt.”
Spite is silent for so long Lucanis thinks he won't answer. Then the demon materializes next to him. A disturbing, shadowy replica of himself.
This is why, Spite gestures to himself. We are trapped. Together. Hurting you so deep, Spite growls, tossing his head. Would hurt me.
Lucanis watches him thoughtfully. “It would hurt you, because you care about Rook too.”
Spite bares his teeth but doesn't disagree. Rook knows us. We trust Rook. Rook is ours.
Lucanis can feel Spite’s possessiveness flow through his own veins, twisting around his heart. “She's a person. You don't own someone.” Lucanis chastises.
Then what? Again Spite's curiosity is so solemn that Lucanis can't help but laugh, short and rough.
“Mierda. I don’t know,” he answers honestly. “I've never–” He swallows hard. “It's only ever been Rook.”
Only Rook, Spite echos, nodding his head.
Lucanis turns, leaning against the wooden railing. “Of all the things to have in common with a demon,” he says, shaking his head.
We can go back to Rook now? Spite asks eagerly.
“No,” Lucanis says sharply, earning him a howl of outrage. “Like I said, this isn't a good idea.”
Rook likes bad ideas! Spite yells indignantly.
The demon certainly isn’t wrong about that. But at least this was one bad idea he could prevent.
Rook. Gets. To choose. Lucanis hates how Spite isn’t wrong about this either. It should be Rook’s decision. It’s not Lucanis’ place to make it for her. But the thought of revealing this strange reality to her petrifies him.
He sighs, leaning forward on the railing, the wood edges digging painfully into his elbows. How was he to explain to Rook that not one, but two demons have fallen in love with her?
A peak into the life of Ingellvar: Lucanis and Spite
Rook should mention to Lucanis that she could hear Spite in close proximity but there is something about the once Spirit of Determination, now turned Demon, navigating the world outside of the Ossuary. It’s dare she say almost endearing the way he is curious of most things. He is surprisingly chatty, and it’s become a guilty pleasure of hers to listen in.
The dynamic between Lucanis and Spite shouldn’t exist; Lucanis isn’t a mage and possesses no magical abilities, yet due to the extreme circumstances he managed to work out a deal with Spite. It’s fascinating, it takes everything she knows of abominations and turns it upside down.
She’s lounged in the common room book open in her lap; recently Rook has found it difficult to sleep it’s no surprise considering the weight on her shoulders. Rubbing the back of her neck to alleviate the tension stuck there, she sighs and takes a sip of tea. Chamomile with vanilla and a touch of honey for added sweetness, it was her go to drink when she was a student back at the Necropolis; a way to help her relax during her studies.
The door creaks open stealing her attention it’s Lucanis.
More accurately, it’s Spite.
He looks much like a child being caught doing something they shouldn’t, no doubt making another escape attempt.
“Hello, Spite.”
The spirit grumbles annoyed that he’s been spotted. Spite could easily make a run for it; wearing only her night clothes and without shoes, Rook isn’t prepared for an outing in the crossroads. However, Spite seems to linger and is watching her with interest; seemingly waiting for her reaction.
Rook pats the cushion next to her, “Would you like to join me?”
Spite moves in a way she would describe as predatory, fluid like and with grace, footsteps near silent. He’s nimble and appears in front of her within a blink of an eye.
“I. Want. To. Leave.”
She smiles softly, “I know, but Lucanis is needed here and so are you.”
There is a flicker of confusion on his face, “I. Needed?”
‘’Of course, may the Gods perish swiftly and painfully by your hand.’’
Face lighting up in sadistic glee, ‘’YES. GOOD!’’
Eventually she manages to convince him to sit with her and she places the book she has been reading between them. It’s nothing to fancy just a tome on the different types of magical properties of crystals for enchantments and spells. She doesn’t expect for him to take an interest, but he does pointing to the different crystals on the page and listens with rapt attention at her explanations.
‘’Jade, for protection and to repel negative energies.’’
‘’Taste. Like. Mint.’’
Rook hums, ‘’I suppose it could.’’
They go from page to page and with each one Spite has a guess on the flavour of each crystal. A garnet would be spicy, obsidian like liquorice, Citrine is citrus – obviously. He was particularly proud with that one, it seems he had a sense of humour, very dry but it was there. Rook has no clue how long they are at it, but she is more than happy to feed his interest, as she turns to another page; Spite tenses and then goes limp and a very groggy and confused Lucanis is with her.
‘’Rook?’’
Lucanis glances around the room, ‘’How did I get here?’’
‘’Spite tried to leave,’’ She explained, ‘’Don’t worry he didn’t get far; I’ve been teaching him about crystals.’’
‘’Amber. Taste. Like. Honey.’’
Rook tries to hide a grin as Lucanis pinches the bridge of his nose, ‘’No. We are not eating crystals.’’
Spite grumbles unhappily protesting loudly like a child throwing a tantrum; Lucanis makes a valent effort to ignore him, but the longer he does the louder Spite becomes.
‘’Now, now Spite; you’re going to give poor Lucanis an aneurysm.’’
Lucanis looks towards her with only what she can describe as look of pure horror and Spite goes silent. Rook on the other hand keeps her eyes on the page of her book, a smile on her face.
‘’You can hear him?’’ Lucanis questions.
‘’When you are this close, yes.’’
‘’I am so sorry.’’
No longer able to contain herself she laughs; Spite is clearly more delighted at this news than Lucanis. The Crow collapses further into the couch and slings an arm over his face and curses. He looks like a man in mourning at her admittance, a part of her feels slightly guilty at not telling him sooner but her Mourn Watcher ways had wanted to get to know Spite better, she wanted to see how he saw the world around him and how it influenced him. Rook pats his shoulder in sympathy and Lucanis removes the arm from his face, there is a small barely their smile breaking out on his face.
‘’Well, at least you can hear what I have to deal with.’’
‘’Rook. Rooook. The crystals. I want to. Eat!’’
Oh dear.
Rook isn’t too sure yet but she thinks she might have bitten of more that she can chew.
I was gonna say I love Lucanis’s romance in the game but apparently as I noticed that’s an unpopular opinion
#dragon age#dragon age veilguard#lucanis dellamorte#lucanis x rook#Lucanis and rook#Lucanis and spite#dragon age Lucanis#maybe it’s because i don’t like spicy scenes#I have no clue if anyone’s flirting or not#maybe it’s because I like it slow and sweet?#I need the straight up I like you or something to notice someone is flirting#I did understand when taash said Harding smelled good though#but also what did you expect from Lucanis he wa a literally tortured and betrayed by the person he was closest to#and you thought he would go for you in a heartbeat?#he’s learning to trust again#besides Mary Kirby did describe him as a bisexual disaster#yes I wish there was more scenes overall with Lucanis#but that’s just cause he’s my fave ever since Tevinter nights and I wanna have more content with him#maybe I just need to find the people who doesn’t like to complain over it#i don’t know
What if Illario didn’t betray Lucanis AU
I blame brain rot
This idea won’t leave my head so I thought I’d share it. I know it may not make sense with game’s story or some of the characters might be a bit off but hear me out.
What if when Zara first approaches Illario about killing Lucanis, so Illario can be first talon, Illario considers it at first but says no. Zara is disappointed and decided to capture him(with much difficulty, Illario is a crow after all) so he can’t warn Lucanis and the other crows. She tries to torture information out of him on how they can infiltrate the crows. They eventually get a crow willing to betray Lucanis and set up the ambush. When they successful capture him, Zara tells Illario that Lucanis is dead, causeing Illario to feel extremely guilty, if he hasn’t let his jealously take hold of him, Lucanis would still be alive.
I imagine Lucanis would be very worried about Illario before being captured and during the events of the game and determined to find him. It’s not like his cousin to disappear like this. I bet he’d even ask Rook for help if they get a chance.
Maybe the first clue they get is when Zara is begging for her life,
“You want to know who betrayed you, don’t you? Who sent you to the Ossuary? Or maybe you want to know where your useless cousin is?”
the traitor crow jumps down from the ceiling and kills her before she can say anything else. But Lucanis needing answers asks Emmrich to help him get more information out of Zara. She tells him everything, that Illario refused to betray him, that she’s been torturing him all this time, now for fun and so they can use his blood for blood magic, where he is being kept, and which crow agreed to betray Lucanis, and of course that she wasn’t the one who “killed” Caterina.
Lucanis immediately asks Rook if they can help him rescue his cousin to which of course Rook agrees, taking Emmrich with them. They go to the Venatori hideout Zara mentioned and find Illario unconscious, chained up in a cell severely hurt from the torture and his own guilt (both mentally and physically) Emmrich heals him as best he can, while Lucanis tries to wake him. When he does both are beyond relieved to see each other alive. Illario tries to apologize to which Lucanis forgives him, probably even says he has nothing to apologize for. Once Emmrich heals Illario enough for them to carry him without making his wounds worse, they get him back to either the lighthouse or treviso.
Lucanis and Rook find Caterina alive, expose the traitor crow, Lucanis becomes first talion, yada yada game events.
It takes a long time for Illario to recover, both mentally and physically, but does eventually with the help of Lucanis and Spite,(and probably Rook, Teia and Viago and even Caterina in her own way).
Am I the only one who thinks this would make an awesome AU fanfic?
5, 7 and 17 for the OC codex meme?
Sorry this took me a bit! I was playing around with different voices and options.
5. Letters between two companions about your OC
(okay I cheated a little here. I did Varric and my Inquisitor. Technically not full companions but they are talking about Rook.)
Hot Foot, Greetings from the soggy back roads of Minrathous. We got our friend out and made a new one--the little rebellion rouser from Ventus. Couldn’t just leave her there after everything. Yeah, yeah, I know. I’m going soft. But she’s got good instincts this one. Impulsive but smart. She’ll keep Chuckles on his toes. She reminds me of you, actually. Even kind of looks like you. If anything Solas will just be floored there’s two of you. It'll be fun. --V
Varric, I am one of a kind and irreplaceable. But once we get things stabilized in the South, I'll be glad to meet your new child. —you’ve always been soft. --Shava
7. Someone describing a time your OC hurt them
“I’m not angry with her.” “Lucanis, that is hardly—” “I’m not.” He set his coffee cup down with quiet irritation. “She made a hard call. The Venatori in Minrathous were the bigger threat. And it’s her home. I get it.” “And Treviso is yours.” Lucanis groaned and buried his face in his hands. Emmrich leaned forward. “My friend, you can barely look Rook in the eye. If you can’t admit what you’re feeling—” “Mierda. What do you want me to say, Emmrich?” He looked up, exasperated. “That you’re upset. Not because Rook made a hard call—but because—” “She. Left. Us.” Spite’s words stumbled out, raw and unbidden. Lucanis slouched deeper into his chair. Emmrich only nodded, gently encouraging him to go on. Lucanis swallowed. “She was—is—my friend. I wanted my friend to choose my home. Me. She didn’t.” “You feel betrayed.” “Yes.” The admission came soft, almost ashamed. “I understand why she did it—” “You can understand her choice and still be hurt by it. Pretending otherwise does neither of you any good.” Lucanis huffed and took another sip of coffee. “So what do you suggest I do?” “Tell her. Even if it breaks something. Even if it hurts. Because maybe that’s the only way you stop pretending nothing happened.” “Is she—” “No,” Emmrich responded. He already knew the question. “She’s not okay either.” Lucanis stared into the fire. The tension simmered out, but the silence that followed felt heavier now—not with avoidance, but with purpose.
17. A future historians description of OC's family:
The lineage and life of Neith Volkarin is a complicated one, spanning culture and region alike. Her familial origins, particularly her ties to the Dalish, remain a matter of scholarly debate. While some mistakenly attribute her birth to Clan Lavellan, extant records disprove this claim. What is confirmed is that Neith was raised among the Dalish of the Free Marches—specifically, Clan Athim’Durgen. Whether she was born into the clan or entrusted to their care by unknown hands during infancy remains unresolved. No credible documentation of her parentage has been recovered.
In 9:40 Dragon, Neith was separated from her clan. The circumstances surrounding her abduction remain murky, but by all accounts was sold into slavery within the Tevinter Imperium shortly thereafter. There she became the property of House Valerius, a once-prominent Tevinter family whose decline coincides—perhaps not coincidentally—with her period of servitude. Several testimonies and circumstantial records suggest Neith played a direct role in events that hastened the their fall from grace, though the extent of her involvement is difficult to ascertain. Following the family's collapse, she was manumitted and taken under the protection of House Mercar, whose name she subsequently adopted.
In 9:53 Dragon, as leader of the Veilgaurd Neith encountered and worked alongside Inquisitor Shava of Clan Lavellan. The two are believed to have formed a strong personal bond, and in the years that followed, Neith was formally adopted into Clan Lavellan.
During her tenure as leader of the Veilgaurd, she recruited the scholar and arcane tactician Professor Emmrich Volkarin of the Mourn Watch. Their partnership evolved into a personal union, and the two eventually settled in Nevarra, where they raised three children.
Persistent rumors suggest that Neith later reconnected with her biological parents, who purportedly came to reside near the Necropolis. However, no corroborating records have been uncovered to confirm this. What is certain is that her children followed in their parents' footsteps, rising through the ranks of both the Mourn Watch and the Shadow Dragons—cementing her legacy within the martial and magical traditions of Thedas.
#tada!#sometimes I write#codex ask game#these were really fun to play around with#I wrote the last one to be pretty far in the future#not all the info is actually correct#because when has history ever remembered all the details correctly#She was sent away from her clan not abducted#but she did get captured and sold to Tevinter#I figure there is some drama with her original clan after she saves the world and all#I think they try to claim her and pretend she was never rejected#but she never really goes back to them and instead forms a strong bond with the Lavellan clan#because she and Shava are quite alike#dragon age#DAI#dragon age veilguard#DA4#oc: neith#neith mercar#rook mercar#shadow dragon rook#elf rook#mage rook#lucanis and rook#this is probably the only playthrough where i choose minrathous#becuase god damn lucanis#they'll be fine tho#they're good friends
