Thinking about what romantic shipping is potentially going to look like on this blog, especially as I cycle through these different characters and discovering their voices.

Musings under the cut, for length, but anyone is welcome to read...

Something I'm finding to be a thread/theme between characters is the idea of "home beyond a physical place." Home as an ideal or wish. Home as a person. What home looks like when you effectively have no one single place to call your own and lay down your head. So many of these characters are outsiders, transient, displaced both in the worlds they inhabit and within their own skin... They don't expect to be in any one given place for too long, because it forces them to confront too much, and that's naturally going to affect the kinds of relationships they're able to develop.

Some characters (Ruby, Belinda, Bill) are easy. I mean. HARD, because all three have traveled with The Doctor and how do you explain that kind of life to someone who's never known it? But they have SIGNIFICANTLY fewer romantic hangups than the other muses here. The Rani... Good luck, is all I will say. Same with Simm!Master. If you can impress them enough for them to consider a GENUINE romantic partnership (not just a fling, or them toying with you) then you get every gold star in the sky.

Caesar has only ever been in love once, and the loss of it completely destroyed him. He's flirtatious, and always down for a tryst, but I'm not sure he'd LET himself fall in love again, or with anyone else. But if he did... what would that process of grieving look like? He's held onto that ideal for nearly 30 years, he's shaped his entire life and his magic around the fixation of his first love and bringing him back from the dead... What would it mean to let that go and "start over" in his 50s, when he feels like the only person who was capable of loving him is really and truly gone?

Luca is always on the move. Since exiling himself from his Pack, he's been alone. Wolves mate for life. Choosing a human mate could be an absolute disaster if they changed their mind, because he simply would not be able to let go (and imagine having to explain THAT to your next partner, "Yeah, my ex is a werewolf who's gotten territorial."). And he's had some nasty previous encounters with witches, and doesn't really feel worthy to spend much if any time around other wolves. He avoids other magical beings as much as he can. Like Caesar, he's a flirt, and always down for a whirlwind romance, but then it's back to the lonely road. What would it look like opening up to someone about what he really is, WHY he's alone, and trusting someone not to abandon or reject him if he does finally take a mate?

Trench and Abena occupy a similar spot in my mind. Trench canonically lost his (toddler?) daughter because he "brought work home with him" from the FBC (a paranatural "infection" that regular doctors couldn't treat, and his wife refused to let him bring her to the FBC scientists to get help), and as a result went through a nasty divorce. Abena is a goddess, who put her trust in The Barber, only to discover he was planning on erasing her father from existence. I'm not sure they're looking for romance, or how they would open themselves up to that kind of love. They feel a bit like cold, remote stars... not "frigid" per say, just... distant. It would take something extraordinary to reach them...

Dylan/P6 was kept in a literal cage from the time he was 16 til he was 27. Then he went into a coma. He's been so completely twisted by his time in the FBC, he wouldn't know kindness or flirting if it walked up and tried to shake his hand. Ironically, of all my muses, he is the one who needs the most love, and is the most likely to try to murder anyone who gives it to him because he Cannot Process Any Big/Overwhelming Emotions. At all.

The Barber... Personally, I head canon that he was in love with Abena, but also knew that was NEVER gonna happen (unless, perhaps, he became a god himself) -- and knows whatever friendship he did have with her will forever be marred by what he planned to do to the Pantheon. He might be the easiest of these boys to get to open up, but he's also one big raw, open wound at the moment. He's learning what healing looks like. What his future looks like. And he's never had a place in the world for himself. He's been used and discarded, feared and reviled, and now... he's working out who he even IS. Somebody would have to be extremely patient with him, because if he were to describe himself, he would call himself a blank canvass... and it's sometimes hard to love someone in that state. This matters SIGNIFICANTLY less in his Dark Godhood Verse -- but Nexus is the king of the gods... dealing with an inferiority complex. What does loving a volatile, angry, hurting deity look like?

And last but certainly not least... The Master Doctor. I am a Thoschei shipper til the day I die. Regenerating into The Doctor and permanently fusing himself with his greatest rival and best friend SHOULD have given The Master everything he wanted. Right? Except... The Doctor doesn't WANT to be a part of him, doesn't want anything to do with him, is actively fighting to be free of him and driving The Master all the more insane. How can he have WON and gotten the girl, and have everything he ever wanted, to BE The Doctor... and still be so completely fundamentally lonely? He's permanently fused to the one person he so desperately wants to never leave him... and he still feels left behind and alone. And what sort of person would choose him in the state he's in now?

Some of these characters might end up as Single Ship muses. Some of them I might not ship at all with, and explore what those emotions and sensations bring up for them. But I think the one thing that will really be KEY in shipping with any of them is that the other muse feels like Home. That they're not just a partner, they're someone who touches those core wounds in a way that feels like healing. That home is in their arms, in a way the rest of the world... has really failed to be. I don't know what exactly that's going to look like for each of these characters... but I'm really excited to find out.
