yeah, uh. not really an astrology person myself.

CLARABELLE: ah, i see. i heard you have something that you always bring everywhere with you. could you tell me what it is and it’s significance to you ?

[a surprised smile on his features.] oh, this ? [he lifts up his right hand, a silver ring on his finger.] it’s a ring from mit. [life has long since worn the ring down a bit, the year hard to read in result. but the weight of it is familiar, like an extension of him. the depth of the design. it’s not that he can’t take the ring off or that he even needs the ring with him at all times. it’s just... comfortable.] it was my father’s ring. gave it to me before he died.

CLARABELLE: that’s fair ! so what has life been like for you in somnilia ? what was your childhood like, have you enjoyed your life here ? is there anything you’d change about your life here ?

[the surprised smile from earlier turns fonder. his childhood had been a kind one. his parents had died of old age but lived happily together while they did. he had been an only child but never lonely. and now...] i couldn’t have had a better life. [his words are fueled by honesty.] i have a husband whom i love dearly. i have three lovely daughters who i think the world of and are all going on to do great things... i couldn’t be happier. [one of the lucky ones, he knows. not everyone gets a life as normal and content as his, but he did. he has this life. while work can get unsavoury at times, he knows it’s the job. he doesn’t have to sacrifice his pursuit for protecting the island and maintaining safety of civilians. he may not go out anymore due to an accident on the job resulting in him needing prosthetics to move, having been paralysed from the waist down, but this one bad thing out of the wave of good in his life... he wouldn’t bother trying to change fate. it wasn’t worth it.]

CLARABELLE: what do you have to say about those that say life here isn’t what they seem ? if… hypothetically speaking, all of this was fake, what would your real life be like ? 

[he laughs a little awkwardly.] well, that’s a bit odd, isn’t it ? i’m not one to dismiss theories, ms. cruz, but it just doesn’t seem all too plausible to me. [while he does get a certain deja vu every now and then, the feeling that things aren’t what they seem... it’s just not realistic. stopping crime, trying to fight for justice... they are things that are core to his being. he can’t imagine anything else. and him with his family? no matter what, the love he has for them outweighs any other paranoias he’d ever have. even if sometimes he’ll look at his prosthetics and feel like he’s falling. even if sometimes he’ll see tony stark and feel something raw and pained in his chest, concern?, albeit them not being all too close. even if sometimes he’ll talk to steve rogers and wonder why it’s so easy to tease the man. even if sometimes he’ll look at his husband and wonder if they would have known each other in another life and still would have been just as happy as they are now. he doesn’t know. but why would he want to think about it? he has everything he needs. he doesn’t need to go investigating things. some things are better left unsolved.]

who are some people in your life that you cherish ? my husband and my daughters, of course.

are you a “read the manual” person or a “figure it out on your own” person ? my mom always told me to read the manual... my dad always told me to figure it out on my own... over the years, i’ve done my share of both.

The knife was a gift or something? The sweater, I’m not really sure where it came from but something about it makes me feel at home.

I didn’t know my family. I went to live with my grandma when I was six years old. But other than that I like a pretty simple life.

well  ...  as  far  as  i  know  i'm  a  capricorn  ...  but  i  can't  say  that  i  know  quite  much  on  what  that  entails  .  [  capricorns  are  known  for  being  hardworking  and  patient  ,  practical  --  and  not  to  mention  ,  responsible  .  ]

[  he  laughs  a  little  .  ]  oh  ?  they're  just  my  glasses  .  not  quite  deserving  to  be  shrouded  in  such  mystique  .  [  they're  brown  tortoise  round  glasses  .  they  are  not  so  close  to  his  being  that  he  can't  have  them  around  him  ...  however  ,  it's  useful  having  them  around  .  after  all  ,  when  he's  not  wearing  them  ,  it  gives  him  something  to  fiddle  with  .  he  always  was  one  of  those  people  who  had  to  mess  around  something  to  keep  his  mind  from  running  away  from  him  ,  and  his  glasses  provide  that  for  him  .  it  was  ,  in  ways  ,  helpful  to  ground  himself  with  .  ]

CLARABELLE  :  that’s  fair  !  so  what  has  life  been  like  for  you  in  somnilia  ?  what  was  your  childhood  like,  have  you  enjoyed  your  life  here  ?  is  there  anything  you’d  change  about  your  life  here  ?

my  life  has  been  perfectly  fine  .  i  grew  up  in  a  good  home  ,  started  my  own  private  investigation  services  .  i  have  my  wonderful  ,  wonderful  daughter  .  there's  truly  not  much  i  would  do  to  change  my  life  here  when  i  already  have  everything  i  need  in  my  life  as  i  have  it  .  [  it  hasn't  exactly  been  the  easiest  life  ,  of  course  .  oh  ,  he  had  great  parents  ,  and  his  father  was  the  one  who  inspired  him  to  be  a  private  detective  .  maybe  things  would  have  been  better  had  clarke's  mother  stayed  ,  but  he  had  stepped  in  to  take  full  care  of  his  daughter  ,  and  he  never  regretted  that  .  but  even  with  all  the  highs  and  lows  ,  there  was  nothing  in  his  life  that  he  would  change  .  sometimes  bad  things  just  had  to  happen  for  the  good  to  come  out  .  and  in  his  life  ...  there  was  plenty  of  good  that  he  would  never  give  anything  up  for  .  ]

CLARABELLE  :  what  do  you  have  to  say  about  those  that  say  life  here  isn’t  what  they  seem  ?  if  …  hypothetically  speaking  ,  all  of  this  was  fake  ,  what  would  your  real  life  be  like  ?

well  ,  i  cannot  quite  discount  what  others  have  said  since  i  wouldn't  quite  know  .  certainly  ,  the  idea  of  alternate  universes  isn't  something  new  ...  but  still  .  i  don't  quite  know  what  my  “  real  life  ”  would  be  like  ,  but  i'm  certain  that  not  too  much  could  be  changed  .  [  a  detective's  eye  was  never  one  that  someone  could  just  give  up  .  becoming  a  private  detective  was  something  he  always  knew  he  was  gonna  do  .  having  all  of  the  puzzle  pieces  lined  out  for  him  while  he  tried  to  analyse  every  part  of  the  board  ?  it  came  as  natural  to  him  as  breathing  .  oh  sure  ,  maybe  there  were  some  cases  that  he  hadn't  taken  on  ,  maybe  some  cases  that  he  had  .  but  the  idea  that  this  life  wasn't  truly  his  ?  not  something  that  he  could  accept  so  easily  ,  regardless  of  how  openminded  he  was  when  it  came  to  seeing  the  big  picture  .  ]

how fun -- now i quite like the island’s park ... i know it can be quite energetic sometimes , but it’s always been quite enjoyable to people watch .

CLARABELLE  :  do  you  think  people  are  inherently  good  or  inherently  bad  ?

i  think  people  are  just  people  .  no  conditionals  about  it  .  not  everyone  is  a  kind  person  ,  but  then  there  are  those  that  are  .  perhaps  no  one  is  born  kind  ,  but  i  do  not  believe  that  people  are  born  bad  either  .  i  think  people  get  affected  by  the  way  that  they  live  .  and  that's  what  determines  their  nature  .

CLARABELLE  :  if  you  could  have  dinner  with  anyone  from  history,  who  would  it  be  ?

perhaps  thomas  pynchon  ?  he  wrote  gravity's  rainbow  .  now  i  personally  never  read  it  ,  but  the  title  ?  fascinating  .  the  path  of  a  projectile  determined  by  natural  law  .

CLARABELLE  :  if  you  could  learn  any  skill  ,  what  would  it  be  ?  

i  would  love  to  pick  up  learning  the  viola  .  what  a  gorgeous  instrument  ,  so  underrated  ,  but  such  a  delight  to  listen  to  .

i  aspire  to  be  a  good  role  model  for  my  daughter  ,  of  course  .

[harry instinctively raises a hand to the only piece of jewelry he's ever worn. a gold locket necklace. when opened, there's a woman on one side and an engraving in the other. he doesn't recognise the woman, and he's never seen her around somnilia. but she has to be his mom. right? who else would it be? and even if she left him in the orphanage, it's the only thing he has left of her. he's worn it so long that he's memorised the sensation of rubbing his thumb against the pattern on the outside of the locket when he gets nervous.] it's a necklace. the... well. the foster home said that it was with me when i got there. i've had it ever since.

it's good ! i mean... i'm about to finish my graduate program soon, i have a couple of graduate papers coming out. my childhood was good, i mean... my dads adopted me when i was really small, and i have this younger sister, eri ? she's adorable, the sweetest. things are good. there's really nothing i'd want to fix about my life, it's pretty great. i'm grateful to my dads for taking me in. they didn't have to, not when they already had eri, but they did. [there's nothing he could ever do to repay them, really.]

CLARABELLE: what do you have to say about those that say life here isn’t what they seem ? if… hypothetically speaking, all of this was fake, what would your real life be like ? 

what... i'm sorry, but... i don't really like to think about that if i'm honest. i don't think it really does any good to be thinking about existential crises like that. i mean... i definitely think that the prospect of alternate realities is completely plausible - i just don't want to entertain the thought. there's no reason to, really, if my life's okay. [he doesn't want to think about what his life would have been like if he'd been with a different family. a mother alive in nothing but memories, a father absent from chosen isolation. a hereditary illness that took away one parent, leaving him fighting for his life. he doesn't want to think about wondering if each breath is gonna be his last. he doesn't want think about a life where his body betrays him, leaving him a prisoner in flesh and bones. he doesn't want to be desperate enough to lie in omission to those he loves just because he wouldn't want them to watch him die. going under an experimental cure, bargaining for more time on this earth. then, darkness? no. he doesn't like this train of thought. not at all.]

Ah yeah, I guess? I wear this hoodie a lot, but that’s mostly because I like to chew on the strings. It’s pretty old, but it’s comfortable and I like the color.

There’s a few things I’d change... but honestly, who wouldn’t change things in their life? Like if you could choose anything you wanted to be or whatever. What I have right now is pretty chill, I’m kinda just laying low until I figure out what I really want to do. Babysitting is hell, but it pays the bills on time. I’m thinking about looking into being a kindergarten teacher or something like that. Something I’m good at, because it’s easy entertaining children when you’re basically one of them yourself.

i've  had  a  good  life  .  definitely  better  than  many  .  i  went  to  mit  ,  met  the  man  who  became  my  best  friend  to  this  day  .  got  into  the  united  states  military  ...  flew  a  couple  of  combat  missions  ...  one  day  ,  it  went  wrong  .  [  he  doesn't  elaborate  further  ,  but  it's  obvious  as  he  rests  a  hand  on  his  orthotics  .  it  doesn't  wipe  the  smile  from  his  face  ,  but  there's  a  solemn  quality  to  it  now  .  ]  moved  to  somnilia  ...  became  a  detective  .  from  there  ,  i  was  on  a  case  that  resulted  in  me  adopting  my  son  ,  eddie  ...  now  ,  i'm  the  police  chief  and  well  ...  i  couldn't  be  happier  .  [  he  doesn't  have  any  complaints  with  the  way  that  his  life  has  turned  out  because  each  thing  resulted  in  the  other  ...  and  now  ,  he's  dedicating  his  life  to  keep  his  son  protected  ,  make  the  island  safer  ...  he  wouldn't  bother  trying  to  change  fate  .  ]

i  mean  it's  good  !  i  can't  exactly  complain  now  ...  can  i  ?  i  graduated  early  and  got  accepted  to  do  a  graduate  thesis  --  i'm  trying  to  become  an  environmental  attorney  .  my  dad  and  i  have  always  been  pretty  close  ,  he  adopted  me  when  i  was  younger  .  and  he  takes  good  care  of  me  .  and  even  just  aside  from  that  :  i  have  great  boyfriend  and  a  wonderful  best  friend  ...  there's  just  nothing  i'd  ever  change  about  it  .

this life's pointless as it is. why would i want another one ? [there are worse things than death. if this wasn't vanitas' real life... then shit. he almost feels bad for the version of himself that would undoubtedly have it worse than he. at least in this life... vanitas got out. even if he roughed it out on the streets, fuck: at least he escaped his old man. hell, maybe even the real version of himself didn't get out. maybe he succumbed to all the bullshit from those with authority over him. maybe he grew desperate to stop feeling like utter bullshit all the time that he did something about it when he shouldn't have. maybe he decided to be selfish and start taking things, start tearing people apart for what he wants to be his. but if that were true: there's no way he and ventus could have ever been happy in that lifetime. vanitas is barely happy in this one, with ventus being the only good thing he's got going in this lifetime. he doesn't want to think about a world where he has no one at all. even if that makes him weak.]

who or what do you aspire to be ? well before i'm twenty seven ? in a permanent coma. sounds festive.

CLARABELLE: hi LOKI ! thank you for coming to meet with me. this is just going to be a fun little interview. so let’s start easy ! just for the record: what’s your name, age, gender, and pronouns ?

Loki Laufeyson. I’m 23, and I go by he/him. Depending on the day.

CLARABELLE: nice ! so what’s your birthday ? we can add it to the town calendar, so that residents can celebrate the day if you’d like ! 

My birthday is December 17th, but I don’t celebrate it.

CLARABELLE: do i look like an astrology person ? because i absolutely am - what do you think your astrology sign says about you ?

I’ve never believed astrology.

CLARABELLE: ah, i see. i heard you have something that you always bring everywhere with you. could you tell me what it is and it’s significance to you ?

I don’t carry anything with me everywhere I go, but I do have an engraved dagger back at home that resonates with me greatly. I don’t know where it came from, but I’ve had it forever.

CLARABELLE: that’s fair ! so what has life been like for you in somnilia ? what was your childhood like, have you enjoyed your life here ? is there anything you’d change about your life here ?

Life is...Easy here, for lack of better terms. I currently work as an english and history professor teaching different grades at the university. I enjoy it, but I wish to do more with my life. It’s just about figuring out what exactly it is I would like to do. Money was never a problem, it’s finding something that doesn’t grind on the last bit of nerves I have left. That’s the problem.

CLARABELLE: what do you have to say about those that say life here isn’t what they seem ? if… hypothetically speaking, all of this was fake, what would your real life be like ? 

A god maybe...Definitely a king. Royalty flows through my bloodline. It would only make sense that I would rule a kingdom somewhere far off in the galaxy. The concept of the universe in its entirety has always interested me.
