This is a very special larva, and one I’ve wanted to find for years! This is Darapsa versicolor or the Hydrangea Sphinx. This is one of 3 species in the genus Darapsa, the other two being D. myron and D. choerilus. This species is arguably the most uncommon of the 3. I have finally managed to figure out where to find the adults, and after getting a multitude at one of my field sites, @professional_scrub and I began to search their hostplants for larvae. Well, I didn’t find one, but @professional_scrub did. These caterpillars are quite cool and are quite stunning with their red spiracles and feet. This photo was taken the night we found the larva. I must say I’m extremely pleased with the way it turned out. This is the last in the series from the Southeast, the last two images will be from South Florida and I’ll explain why I differentiated the two regions. This is Acharia stimulea or the Saddleback caterpillar. These and other Limacodidae (Slug Moths) are abundant in the fall season. This particular individual was huge and near pupation. The habitat photo was the only one in this series I had to totally fudge. Limacodidae are found nearly everywhere, but for the life of me, I couldn’t make a good habitat shot out of it! 👇🇪🇸&🇧🇷👇~ 🇬🇧 You know what they say, that "a picture is worth a thousand words". But when I think of photos of the natural world, I don’t agree this expression always applies. Of course, everybody admires the sight of a shiny metallic green wasp, or the magnificence of the design of a lizard eye's pupil, or the contrasted light that brings the interiors of a glass frog to the spotlight. But there is much beauty hiding behind these images: the scientific knowledge harvested by generations of researchers in the effort to discover how nature works.

I follow many IG accounts of astonishingly beautiful images of the natural world –specially bugs. But the ones I prefere are those that also teach me something about the living being presented in the post. That's also what I try to do in my account. And that is what I found in @macrointhewild, a marvellous "hub for natural history and editorial-quality macrophotography photos from the field" I recently discovered and strongly recommend you to follow. 🇪🇸 Todo el mundo conoce la frase "una imagen vale más que mil palabras". Pero cuando pienso en fotos de naturaleza, no creo que esta expresión sea siempre válida. Sin duda, uno se maravilla al ver una avispa verde de brillante metálico, o ante el diseño magnífico de la pupila del ojo de una lagartija, o ante el contraste de luz que revela el interior de una rana de cristal. Pero detrás de estas imágenes se esconde otra belleza: el conocimiento científico cosechado por generaciones de investigadores en su esfuerzo por descubrir cómo funciona la naturaleza.

Sigo muchas cuentas de Instagram con imágenes maravillosas del mundo natural (en especial, con fotos de bichos). Pero mis cuentas preferidas son aquellas que también me enseñan algo sobre los seres vivos que muestran. Eso es también lo que trato de hacer en mi cuenta.
