AU concept:

In this version of medieval England, magic is real but forbidden.

John Constantine here is not a street magician. He is King Constantine, ruler of a fractured kingdom. He won his crown in a war no one likes to talk about. Some say he made deals to win it. Others say he just got lucky.

He keeps magic out of his court, at least in public. In private, he still speaks to it. He keeps charms under his bed. He wears iron rings on every finger. He knows how thin the veil is, and what happens when it breaks.

Zatanna Zatara arrives at court as a traveling performer. She poses as a stage magician. But her tricks are real. She speaks spells backward. She’s the daughter of a long-dead druid.

She means to pass through the court and move on. Then she meets Constantine.

They recognize each other. Not in the usual way.

They fall in love. Slowly.
