mara grew up in a rigid, ultra-conservative household in northern idaho. her father was a volatile ex-military survivalist, obsessed with discipline and religious purity. her mother was quiet, devout, and emotionally checked out — a ghost in the home.

when mara misbehaved (or simply expressed herself), she was locked for hours or days in a silent basement, sometimes without food. that isolation bred hallucinations — first imagined voices, later full apparitions she couldn’t always control. she never told anyone. she thought everyone’s mind worked that way.

trauma markers:

— emotional and sensory deprivation

— severe repression of her sexuality

— one documented violent episode at age 12: she stabbed her father in the arm with a broken mirror shard, claiming she was protecting herself from “what he was becoming”.

— van: van teases mara, but secretly respects her. the two develop a strange bond. van may even find herself attracted to mara, though neither acts on it… yet.

— taissa: distrusts mara immediately. thinks she’s unstable and dangerous — and she’s not wrong.

— misty: feels threatened by mara’s quiet insight and lack of fear. mara sees through misty in a way no one else does, which sends misty spiraling.

— shauna: mara’s one of the first to notice shauna’s capability for violence and resilience under pressure. unlike others, mara doesn’t seem shauna as fragile, she sees her as evolving.

complicated relationships :

mara develops a complex, tender, and increasingly dangerous bond with another girl in the group — lottie.

mara is terrified of being abandoned again, and as her psychosis deepens, the line between love, protection, and obsession begins to blur.

adult timeline (2021) :

some say she died.

some say she became part of the wilderness.

but then animals start dying in symbols only mara used to draw. natalie and taissa find a moth pinned to a tree in the shape of her sigil.

lottie freezes.
