Holy shit, I found some of my old LotR fanfics on a USB stick i thought I had lost forever. They are almost 15 years old, before AO3, before ff.net before freaking dA! These were maillist and homepage fics and holy hell was this a different age of fanfics...... Topics include but not limited to:
Aragorn being all of Mirkwoods fucktoy
Legolas doing non-con stuff to uruks (twice!). No, not them doing it to him. Him doing it to them
Legolas and Grima sharing tender moments of lovemaking
Haldir being an absolut bastard, repetedly and without remorse, like, Leggy treats the uruks better in those fics
Soooo much Elladan and Elrohir twincest, often with a third party thrown in
Legolas and Saruman going at it
Legolas and Gandalf doing it
Just straight up Fellowship orgies
Legolas keeping Elladan as a willing victim
If I compare them to what I'm writing today, I can help but feel I mellowed out significantly, haha!

O.K. but the thing is …
Fan culture would deffinitely be different in a world without she-who-must-not-be-named
Of te top of my head?
ONE
The reason young fic authors don‘t understand why old fics ususually started with a disclaimer?
Like:
I dodn‘t own abc
xyz owns everything
Please don‘t sue me
I have no money
That is because of the Harry Potter fandom, and she-who-must-not-be-named encouraging fanfics, wenn before you did not dare to talk about it, wenn before IP holders had sued fic writters etc …
Could anoter franchise have done that?
IDK
Maybe?
The LOTR trilogy was doing numbers around the same time …
But I peronally don‘t think it would have
For two reasons
1) demographic
LOTR fans where ususally a bit older and theerfor it usually wasn‘t their first fandom, meaning a lot of LOTR fic was propably of the handwritten/tipped/physicall zine at a con varietty or at least of the mail-list/invitation only forum variettey
(remeber wenn AO3 was invitation only?)
While HP fans where younger. HP propably beeing their first fandom, and this excitting new thing called the inernet was slowly becoming more mainstream (like my family didn‘t have a computer until 2000 and then internet was very expensive and no, my school didn‘t have just a room full computers you could use for personal shit in the afternoon, the american experience is not uiversal)
So while there of course still where handwritten/tipped/physicall zine at a con varietty or at least maillist/invitation only variettey fics, there was a rising number of people who, propably because they didn‘t know fic ettiquette jut put their fics where everone could see them
And she-who-must-not-be-named just let them
For some reason
→ Anyone who knows the drama about the „Harry Potter Lexicon“ might have some theories as to why she did that …
But the fact of the matter reains that she did
And that things shifted from fic writters beeing the weird one, to grown ass companies hunting down fic writters becoming the weird ones …
2) Numbers
Now, I dodn‘t have any statistics, just empirical data, from beeing there … wenn the old magic was written
But as a LOTR fan … you where very lonely in the far of year of 2000/2001/2002 (by 2003 most people had at least heard of the movies … )
I had a small group of likeminded aquaintances
But we drowned in a sea of Harry Potter fans
I stil remeber quietly seathing every time I saw the amount of LOTR merch vs the vastly bigger amout of available Harry Potter merch
And those numbers do not lie
Companies make as much merch as they can realisticaly expect to sell and shops put as much merch on display as they can realistically expect to sell
So I feel like it is fair to say that, the casuall movie goer not withstanding; LOTR was always a bit more niche then HP
Meaning that IMHO the LOTR fans who did write fic (which again is a fraction of everyone who saw the movies/red the books), would not have been enough to significantly change things while the HP fans where just to many to be ignored.
TWO
AO3 might not exist in it‘s curret form … or at all
Because while one of the reasons it exists where strikethroughs from livejournal etc …
→ Though you could argue that the rising numbers due to incoming HP fans where kind of responsible just via beeing numbers that suddenly drew a lot of attention
But that is conjecture so we will just ignore it …
Another reasons was drama in teh HP fandom.
Griffindor towers fic archive was wiped out because of a few people having personall beef with each other.
But it wasn‘t the only one
And out of all of that, and the changing landscape of fandom AO3 rose like a phoenix
THREE
Even things like the MCU might not exist
→ And you might think that would be a good thing XD Though I really liked te early stuff … but that again is a different discussion
Because super hero and fantasy movies had the stink of low returns on them. The 80s and 90s where a drak time …
Usually only making their budged back via the VHS marked … sometimes even becoming cult classics … but that took years …
And sure, LOTR was there … but making a comitment for three movies that where all shot at the same time, was a completely different beast to having a franchise that would take years to unfold …
But WB gambled with HP and proofed several things
→ There was money in adapting preexisting IP‘s
→ There was money in fan content
→ There was money in fantasy
→ The attention and money of fans could be held for years … and of course having a franchise in the background that was guaranteed to make it‘s money back instead of gambling with new original scripts was an offer studius could not refuse …
The MCU, how ever fucked up it is these days, and how ever much it might have damaged movie making, was a huge comitment.
Actors signed for multiple movies.
New, unknown, unproofed actors
Like, Tom Hiddleston was no one outside of the UK
Who had ever heard of Chris Hemsworth outside of Australia?
RDJ was maybe the most famous, but he had fallen from grace and was still trying to come back from that (the Iron man movie → back then not yet a marvel production having done a lot of heavy lifting in that regard)
Scarlett Johanson was semi known but no guarant for box office returns … not ike a Julia Roberts or a Angelina Jolie
And Marvel gambled on all of them (and many more) for several movies.
Becaus ethey had seen what WB did with HP, what New line cinema did with LOTR and seen dollar signs …
→ Again, teh LOTRs was helpfull in proofing that it was a pattern and not a fluke, but I doupt that it alone would have been convincing enough.
FOUR
The success of the MCU in turn let to comic book characters beeing revamped (think Agent of Asgard) which led to a rainsaissance of the Marvel comic books who had been drowning in red since the 90s …
Which in turn gave marvel the convidence to allow for new characters like Kamala Khan or America Chavez
So love it, hate it, be neutral about it.
But the world would be fundantalyl different without the HP books
And many things we have grown to love would not exist … or would not exist in this form
War after all is the father of all things
And she-who-must-not-be-named had, for better or for worse, and through daisy chains of events, had a strong hand in shaping fandom as we know it …
Would I prefer it to be different?
Yes
But it is what it is ... and pretending it isn't, is just fundamtally dishonest ...
