What is Mainframe Access?
To access a mainframe, users typically use terminal emulation software that allows them to connect to the mainframe remotely. Once connected, they can interact with the mainframe's operating system and applications, and perform tasks such as data entry, report generation, and system administration.
Mainframe access is still important today, as many legacy systems still run on mainframes and require skilled professionals to maintain and operate them. However, as more organizations move towards cloud computing and other modern technologies, the demand for mainframe access is likely to decrease over time. #mainframeaccess #mainframeservices

Unveiling the Future of Mainframes: Key Trends to Watch in 2023
As we turn the page on another year, the world eagerly anticipates the future and what it may hold. With each passing day, the mainframe industry continues to evolve and adapt to the changing technological landscape, leaving many wondering what exciting advancements and developments are in store for 2023.
Decision-makers are continuously searching for cutting-edge solutions that can keep them one step ahead of the competition in the dynamic and constantly changing world of business. It's the same concerning mainframe systems. While many people might think that the next natural step is to replace these outdated systems with new ones, businesses have started to take a more pragmatic approach by looking into how to use emerging technology to enhance the functionality of current mainframe systems. This opens a whole new universe of opportunities while preserving their current investments. Businesses can profit from cutting-edge technologies in this way while still utilizing the strength and dependability of existing mainframe systems. It's a win-win situation that will undoubtedly spur success and help businesses reach new heights.
As someone who has closely followed the trends and developments within the mainframe space, I am thrilled to share my top five predictions for the coming year. So without further ado, let's take a closer look at what the future may hold for this ever-evolving industry.
● Mainframe modernization remains a priority for hyperscale cloud providers.
Mainframe modernization has been extensively promoted by hyper scale cloud providers like AWS, Microsoft, and Google in 2022, and this trend is anticipated to continue in 2023. It is anticipated that full-scale migrations will take many years to materialize, and the decommissioning of mainframe systems may take even longer, if it happens at all, despite the tremendous efforts these providers have made to promote mainframe migration. Enterprises must carefully assess their strategic options before implementing mainframe migration.
● The Significance of Mainframe Data Increases Further
Despite my skepticism about IBM's assertion that the mainframe houses 80% of enterprise data, I am confident that the mainframe is the most significant system of record data for the more than 5,000 businesses that have mainframes. Enterprises are placing a higher priority on the safety of mission-critical data on the mainframe as a result of the impending threat that ransomware and hacks pose to senior IT professionals' jobs.
One of the key topics for 2023 is the location of mainframe data. Currently, the majority of data is stored on enterprise-class storage arrays from vendors like IBM, EMC, and Hitachi, closely tied to the mainframe computing hardware. However, vendors like Model9 and Broadcom are disrupting this norm, and this trend is expected to continue. Broadcom's launch of the CA1 Flexible Storage solution has validated early moves by Model9, and it is anticipated that these two vendors, along with IBM and other emerging offerings, will transform the storage location and utilization of mainframe data beyond just powering mainframe applications.
● IBM Launches a New Box
IBM's most recent announcement of a new mainframe box is nonetheless noteworthy even though it may not come as a surprise to some people. The z16 was the most recent addition in 2022, and the tech titan has a well-established history of releasing new mainframe technology every few years. Looking ahead to 2023, it is very likely that IBM will follow the established cycle of earlier generations and present a more compact "business class" machine in the middle of the year.
The market is anticipating IBM's imminent release of a smaller LinuxONE system, which will reportedly be called the Rockhopper and have AI and security features. It is unclear whether the launch will occur simultaneously with the Z model or in stages. Despite this, IBM anticipates strong take-up of both systems, in part because of the Telum processor's emphasis on AI and the rising need for cyber resilience. The zSystems hardware team is anticipated to continue to outperform IBM's company despite the possibility that the smaller system won't have a major revenue impact when combined with the z16 box's success.
● IBM Increasingly Focusing on Open Source and Linux on the Mainframe
The Open Mainframe Project, a collaborative effort for open-source development on the mainframe platform, will have been running for eight years by August 2023. It has significantly improved governance and speed of development. The second in-person Open Mainframe Summit in 2023 is expected to be a grander affair, and the project will continue to be a focus for open-source development on the s390x chip architecture.
● z/OS In the Cloud
IBM has a perfect data-centric solution with the z16 platform that is ready for extensive deployment on IBM Cloud. Although changing from a hardware CapEx-based model to a consumption-based one is no easy task, HPE's GreenLake and Dell's Apex solutions show that it is achievable. For IBM's larger cloud objectives, delivering complete production workloads of IBM z/OS through a public cloud subscription model would be a solid starting point. It is most likely not technological impossibility, but rather a cautious approach in anticipation of great demand, that IBM has not yet made this available.
Enterprises must carefully weigh the costs and advantages of moving applications from mainframes to the cloud before making a decision. To satisfy the changing demands of the business, they should analyze the options offered by mainframes and cloud-based solutions. It might not always be practical to throw out current processes in the name of modernization since new modern apps continue to appear and enhance the capabilities of mainframes.
In 2023, the mainframe platform is expected to experience a breakthrough year as businesses look for dependable and worthwhile solutions in a difficult economic environment. The hybrid cloud deployment that is becoming the norm for many major enterprises will require the mainframe to change and adapt. Companies will likely reevaluate their mainframe modernization programs and proceed cautiously with migrations and refactoring projects to the public cloud as fears about the global recession grow. Instead, they'll realistically think of microservices-based migrations as a good way to take advantage of the mainframe platform's advantages.

IBM frequently reassures its clients that mainframe services continue to be the most secure platform available. IBM recently added additional types of data sets, such as sequential basic format and large format SMS-managed data sets, to its mainframe encryption capability. The ability to handle data while it is encrypted is more enticing than ever at a time when businesses are more concerned about cybersecurity than ever. #mainframe #mainframeservices #2023
