The thing about the OG Night Elf love triangle is that the reason for Tyrande's choice isn't what you might think on first read/play.

It's not that Malfurion is the "safe choice", it's not Illidan's recklesness and occasional temper (bc let's be fair, Malfurion has both in spades as well). It's not Illidan's crimes or magic addiction. It's not even the "raw power VS true strength" thing that Tyrande brings up in Warcraft III (although that probably is part of it).

It's not that Illidan didn't "really" love her, because he definitely did. Illidan would have burned the world to save Tyrande, and that is the problem. Tyrande would die without hesitation for the greater good, and she could never bear to be the reason for her people or world coming to harm.

When faced with the choice of saving Azeroth or the kaldorei and saving Tyrande, Malfurion would let Tyrande die. The choice would kill him, but he would make it. And Tyrande knows it, just as he knows that she would always choose her people, her Goddess and her world over him (as indeed she does in Legion).

It is this awareness that their partner will always put duty first that brings both of them comfort and the peace of mind they need to face the horrors they fight on the regular, because they face them knowing that their love can never be used to undo all that they fight for.

Malfurion and Tyrande's love is not unconditional in the sense of "I love you, I will always be by your side and I would do anything for you". It is unconditional like "I love you and I always will, no matter what you do or what comes between us. I love you enough to act in accordance with your values even if it means losing you". It is how they can be apart for a thousand years and then just pick up where they left off. Because the understanding and acceptance they share runs so deep that it never even crosses their mind that the other's absence might be because their love has weakened.

It's why Tyrande holds no lasting resentment for Malfurion's sojourns into the Dream and why he instantly forgives her for basically leaving him to die in Dearkheart Thicket. It's why he doesn't follow her into the Maw in Shadowlands and why she doesn't stay with him in Ardenweald in Dragonflight.

Were Illidan in Malfurion's place at the start of SL, he would jump after Tyrande without hesitation. It would be a much grander romantic gesture (as well as show of genuine love), but he would also be leaving behind a fractured, hopeless, grieving people.

That is why Tyrande loves Malfurion - she would do anything for the greater good, and she needs to know that the one beside her would allow her to do that without undermining her sacrifice; and it goes both ways.

Headcanon about Darnassian in WoW

- Anyone else always feel like theres different brands of dialects in the elvish languages of Azeroth? Cause if you think about it, the Kaldorei language isn’t coined as ‘Kaldorish’ or ‘Kaldri’ pertaining to the language actually ASSOCIATED with the Kaldorei. It’s just ‘Darnassian’, which implies that the dialect spoken is the dialect of elves that live in Darnassus in Teldrassil!

- Which means that there’s a different accent happening, and yeah yeah ‘Erm what about Thalassian’. Well Thalassian has the Highborne word ‘Thal’ in it which means ‘Of Importance’ or ‘Highly’ when we consider somewhere like Eldre’Thalas. Thalassian translates to ‘Children of High- Birth’ the same way Quel’dorei means something similair. However instead of children it’s ’Language of High- Birth”. Eldre’thalas translates as ‘Dire Maul’ in the Wiki, however I believe that a lot of the ancient Highborne constructs have ‘Eldre’ in it because it means something like ‘Elder’ or like LOTR with ‘Eldar’. In the same way Thalas could mean stars, or something of importance.

- So anyways back to the point, I strongly believe that Darnassian is a dialect of Kaldorei, but not something that is the ONLY dialect. To me Darnassian is sort of like a city accent, where it’s easier to understand because of its proximity to so many other languages including ‘Common’ as the language of the Humans. Especially since Mages have to translate spells and the like FROM elvish texts, Darnassian is probably easier on the ears to understand and less harsh to speak.

- However if you take an elf that is from somewhere like Dalaran, or spends a lot of time in Stormwind or in Alliance areas with diversity, chances are they speak Darnassian! But if you put them in a room with someone from let’s say Feralas, and who has only ever lived in Feralas, there’s an accent barrier!

- We can compare it to Jacksepticeye being placed in the same room as someone from Cork, Ireland. Or someone from Oklahoma being put in the same room as someone from Mississippi in the Deeper South.

- I HAVE NO IDEA WHERE THESE IDEAS CAME FROM THEY JUST JUMPSCARED ME IN THE MIDDLE OF MY RAMEN TIME
