when did you first know you had feelings for kanae? are there any other characters that you love in the same way? or did?

I first figured it out when I was either close to or did finish my initial playthrough of euphoria. She really resonated with me and her sweet, kind, though complex nature struck a deep chord with me. She'd had a firm grip on me since! She isn't my first waifu though--I've also deeply loved Sailor Moon as a child, and I adored Kaede Fuyou and Rika Manabe (Djibril series) before meeting Kanae. I loved all of them for a substantial amount of time but Kanae is the longest-lasting by far.

Trianthology − School Love Adventure part 1

Back to that other game! It’s hard to find the time (especially since I’m not used to reading an entire VN in Japanese) but I’ll try to move forward a little bit and at least get to the third story before the end of the month.

But first, I have to apologize − contrary to what I said it seems like the first story “Country Girl” wasn’t written by Ryūkishi07, but by Tanaka Romeo so… mea culpa.

So I picked up from where I stopped, when Keiko was hospitalized, read a bit ahead and… then the story stopped in the middle and we got back to Alice and her rabbit. Yes, that’s where the 07th Expansion weirdness is starting to kick in − instead of finishing this story, we get thrown right away in the middle of the second one: a romcom parody called School Love Adventure (Although It’s Kinda Silly to Call It That) (yes, that’s the full title). And shit only gets weirder from there.

The point-of-view character is your usual antisocial First-Person Smartass© of an MC called Amara Ibito, with his one male pal Karasuma Hidaka and his female pal Manabe Yukari. Of course he also has a shy childhood friend called Akazawa Noriha. Of course there’s a school legend about love (although a little bit twisted) and of course a whole bunch of girls are gonna go after him, with each encounter getting more ridiculous. Even the interface looks like your average dating sim − the text box now has its own buttons, meaning you have a menu in your menu so you can play while you play!

And in this game, you have choices! And if you pick the wrong choice… the camera zooms back to the point of view of someone playing the game, calling it crappy and turning it off, and it's a game over. There seems to be two kinds of "bad endings" − either the MC falls in love with a girl and they live happily ever after, or he decides to ditch everything and live his life as a slob playing games forever. Thankfully, if you click "continue" the game brings you back right before the choice even if you haven't saved.

By the end, there’s a weird twist, or hint of a twist. First the MC wonders if he's in the freaking Truman Show because there's no way so many girls would be after him, and as I kept deliberately picking game over options (because any options but the first ones lead to happy bad endings), things started to get a little clearer… In several endings, we got a glimpse of the player's face which was none other than Mikihiko from the "Country Girl" story. And in case it wouldn't be obvious enough, one of this story's girls namedrops one of the characters from Country Girl out of nowhere, to the bafflement of the MC − and mine. And just as things start to get really weird, we get back to the Metaworld before switching to the third story, Vespio 2438, a space opera.

I have no idea how they're gonna connect that to the first two stories, but now this game's got my full attention.

Regarding SLA, while the fact that new (Ryuukishi-drawn) girls appear out of nowhere every minute only to give you bad endings seems like a potshot at clichéd romcom games, I really dig said girls' designs, so I kinda hope they're not one-off jokes… but I doubt it, as they're clearly meant to be shallow clichés − you got the serious stuco president, the passionate sports club captain, the cool distant beauty, the Cute Clumsy Girl who's Late for School with a Toast of Tardiness, the Ojou, and the girl who's in an arranged marriage with the MC. Oh, and there's a Rika/Bernkastel expy among those girls, because of course there is.

But even putting aside all the meta-meta-shit, SLA part 1 was actually really fun to read for its sheer absurdity, and I laughed more than once.

He was like the first big fave! It wasn’t instant but it also wasn’t like... Late... I love this boy! He’s so gentle and nice and just a happy bab overall! He’s just the most precious thing

Ok so my brother mixes up how come I started liking Hayami with how come I started liking Kurama. But it was really weird. Like, I saw him around in fanart with Hamano a lot, and Hamano was the Great Big Fave, and I liked Hayami’s little moments enough so I just started putting him as a big fave until I played the games and that became just The Most Genuine Feeling. He’s just a big cutie (seriously, how tall is he?) and I want to see him grow up healthy and happy

Anyways- I don’t remember what got to love this boy when I was little, I guess he was kinda like Hayami, as in, he was with my fave a lot, therefore, a good boy! Oh yeah I also really really really disliked when somebody called him just an Endou copycat like no he is a really strong and powerful boy!!! Also he was voiced by Diana Torres and I love her okay

But now! I saw Tachi in a gif when I rejoined the fandom and went ‘!!!!!!!!!!!!’ like wow I love this boy??? He’s my main goalkeeper in the games and he is doing such a good job! I’m so proud of him! 

Minaho Kazuto

Alright, this one just isn’t fair, he’s an instant fave, it really shouldn’t count but Galaxy proved that it can live up to... Uhhh... Whatever feeling I had towards Minaho, really.

He’s just a huge dork and he is so smart and so good at analyzing but he’s A DORK and he wants to be a detective? Sure buddy I support you! Also owls are my fav birds so!!! I love this boy sob? And he is really fun to draw to! (I mean, who would’ve guessed right? After all, I got most stuff asked to him, at least it was that way at first. Speaking of the blog, not dead! I just lost motivation for a bit :’>)

Kageyama Hikaru

Another instant fave! I am bound to love every penguin baby in existence but Hikaru’s design just is so... Soft? And his voice both Spanish and Japanese is so cute (A reminder that I first watched Go dubbed with my brother, until he decided he didn’t want to watch Galaxy and sometimes I thank him for that because if i had to hear ‘Zippy Lerner’ as often I would... You know... C E A S E) 

But he is so polite? And he had such a good potential! You know what we, as a fandom, deserved? A penguin Keshin/Soul! And you know what Hikaru deserved? A keshin! Or a soul! Can you imagine? Him going to space and finally have something done witht he fact that he’s Kageyama’s nephew? A PENGUIN SOUL? 

Manabe Jinichirou

I had a weird vibe about him, to be honest. It was like, I liked him, but I also was suspicious of him for some reason...? But I somehow got the feeling that I wanted to give him a hug! When I actually watched Galaxy, I got like, really attached to him! I love his character, he’s a cutie!

Kino Aki

I LOVE HER? MY GIRL, MY PRINCESS, my first favorite overall! She is so hardworking and nice and cute! I love her so much! Everytime I see her I just get all smiley! And! Mel made me love her even more! Which I didn’t think was possible! Aaa!

Tsunami Jousuke

Ah yes I ended up adding Tsunami. My heart couldn’t resist putting him on this. After all, he was my favorite for a really long time! I don’t... Remember much about him? But he has this really good really gentle vibe? I just can’t describe it... I should rewatch OG... When I finish CS!

Hiyori Masakatsu (Really? I thought it was Mansakatsu... Don’t know why)

I was convinced I wouldn’t like, LOVE anybody from Ares, but he became quickly a favorite of mine! It was because of his amazing charms and his shark backpack. I love sharks. Sob. I also thought he was a girl. Would’ve been nice to have more girl players. Really admired Rika and Touko when I was little. I like how he is supposed to be the straight man (in inaele? sure bud) but he is goofy as well! I really wanted him to be on Orion, but oh, well.

Fruits Basket 2 – 01 – The Hideous One

First of all, let me say how good it feels to have Fruits Basket back in my life. It’s truly a salve for the heart! Those who haven’t watched the first season probably wouldn’t agree. It should go without saying: make sure you watch those 25 episodes before getting anywhere near this episode. But holy crap, what a return to greatness!

A gorgeous new OP, followed by an episode centered squarely on … Minagawa Motoko! In which she recognizes Tooru’s positive effect on Yuki. And stops living in a world of fantasy. And acknowledges her flaws. And commits to pursuing Yuki the right way. In other words, Motoko changes…and in doing so becomes yet another character I love and can’t wait to see again. And lest we forget, she’s brilliantly voiced by MAO!

Tooru shows up to put an iron uncomfortably close to the faces of Kyou and Yuki, but otherwise this is basically The Minagawa Motoko Show from start to finish (with a sprinkling of Yuki). It’s a ballsy move to make Tooru’s arrogant, one-dimensional, self-deluded love “rival” the protagonist-of-the-week, especially as the first episode back.

But Fruits Basket has already demonstrated time and again that none of its cast is really shallow; it’s just a matter of how much we know them, and this was the time to really hunker down and get to know Motoko, beyond the scheming president of Prince Yuki—someone nearly bowled over by Arisa’s eager new delinquent minions (a great potential pairing for a future episode, by the way).

Motoko puts her war with Tooru aside to deal with a more pressing matter: the identity of the new StuCo board members. Specifically, she wants to make sure none of them are hussies that will steal her man (who, let it be said, has already been all but stolen by Tooru!) But former StuCo prez Takei can sense Motoko’s intent and isn’t spilling the beans.

Meanwhile, it’s new StuCo prez Yuki who meets the new board members in question, in a very bizarrely staged scene. When he enters, he hears a girl seemingly weeping in the dark in a giant mess of files. Yet after recoiling from his touch, she adopts a stoic demeanor and goes about cleaning up. This is the new StuCo treasurer, Kuragi Machi.

Then he meets the new veep, the brash and grigarious Manabe Kakeru, who had been napping in the next room and reminds Yuki of his repellent brother Ayamu. He has a particularly weird exchange with Manabe later, leading him to wonder if there’s something Zodiac-y or Zodiac-adjacent about these new members…or if they’re just a bit eccentric.

That night, we end up in Motoko’s very rich-girly room as she waxes poetic about Yuki and curses those who would stand between her and him, only to be rudely interrupted by her no-nonsense mom in curls. Turns out Motoko puts on Kongou Mitsuko rich girl airs at school, but is actually from a working-class family who lives above their shop. I’m already more fascinated with her!

The next day, Motoko decides to bypass Takei entirely, enlisting the aid of third-year and fellow Prince Yuki member Aida Rika, to pick the lock of the StuCo office. Turns out the office unlocked, and Motoko and Rika are in luck: the only person in there is their beloved Yuki. Quietly cheered on by Rika, Motoko gets off to a rough start by asking Yuki…about what he ate for breakfast.

But because Yuki is such a nice guy, he dutifully tells her what he ate, and she discovers they like the same kind of natto. Then, unbidden, Yuki asks Motoko if she normally speaks so formally, commenting that it’s “kind of cute.” Motoko would normally be happy beyond words by being called cute by Yuki, but when she sees his warm easy smile that accompanies the words of praise, she sees a Yuki she doesn’t recognize.

The adoring distance she’s kept from Yuki means the Yuki she saw was rarely the Yuki he really was underneath a much cooler, at times forced smile. She realizes how far that distance remains when Yuki could change so much without her knowing, and with the help of someone else … someone not her by his side. It’s suddenly too much to bear, so she runs off.

As she flips on a faucet to wash her suddenly tear-filled face, Motoko professes her hatred of all women who “dare get near Yuki”, but hates none of them more than herself, the “hideous one” who thinks those kinds of thoughts as she’s reflected in her mirror. It’s the kind of honest self-reflection I was hoping from Motoko after her fateful visit to the Hanajima residence (a veritable bastion of Keeping It Realness).

Motoko shouldn’t just thank Tooru’s influence for giving her a Yuki who can smile, but one who didn’t let things sit where they were. He goes after her to make sure she’s alright, and in doing so, confides in her that despite looking so “unruffled”, he’s barely keeping his cool. Motoko can relate, as she just lost her cool back in the office!

Heartened by Yuki’s smile, Motoko vows not to give up the fight. He may have changed, and Tooru may have changed him, but she still adores him and wants him to be hers. Now that she’s actually exchanged more than just polite pleasantries, but shared a moment of mutual vulnerability, that affection has gained intensity and legitimacy.

As I sat staggered at how well they fleshed out Motoko and made her someone I half want to root for in just an episode, Yuki returns home and washes dishes with Tooru, and mentions the almost Zodiac-like strangeness of his new council-mates. He also confesses that he was happy when Manabe said he was “more interesting than [he] thought.”

Earlier, Kyou called Yuki lame, and privately, Yuki acknowledges that yeah, he is lame. It’s why Kyou’s barb is so painful; he believes it. But Tooru assures him that even if tough times are coming, either in the StuCo (maybe) or the Souma family (most assuredly) there will be fun times to cherish as well. Life is a never-ending string of getting hurt and healed by words and actions big and small.

After Tooru delivers those wise-beyond-her-years words, the episode closes perfectly on its heroine Minagawa Motoko, positively angelic in her frilly nightgown and glorious pink palace above a workaday store, gazing at the stars in quiet, hopeful, healing prayer.

2. Let Shindou teach you how to play the piano OR let Kidou teach you how to cook. - God knows how much I want to learn how to play the piano and I can’t think about a better teacher than Shindou. But will I ever learn? Or I’ll fail on purpose so he can be my teacher forever? lol

3. Eat Tachimukai’s super super spicy curry OR eat curry that Kogure made for you (with an evil look in his eye as he passes it to you). - I can’t do spicy food & I also can’t really drink milk, but Kogure will probably put something even worse in his curry so, I’ll choose to die by Tachimukai’s food ‘cause at least I know he made it with love&good intentions, can’t say the same for Kogure....

Read soccer magazines with Tenma and Taiyou (Who will never get bored) OR listen to every single one of Midorikawa’s proverbs AND Osamu’s lectures. - I like to play/watch soccer (World Cup) but I’m not so into it as to spend time reading magazines. Mido’s proverbs are one of my fav parts of the anime & I would like to learn new ones. As for Osamu’s lectures... I’ll just endure them, I have plenty of experience with boring lectures xD But maybe his won’t be as boring?

8. Go to a petting-zoo with Konoha OR play basketball with a very competitive Ibuki. - I didn’t read the “petting” part so I was going to choose playing basket BUT animals are way more important than sports, and if I can pet them then there’s no need to think about it.

9. Have Tetsukado teach you boxing OR have Sakura teach you gymnastics. - Boxing’s better to release energy&frustration, and I could learn some self-defense.

10. Cuddle up under a blanket with Fei OR eat strawberry and cream cake with Tenma. - Today’s rainy day is perfect to cuddle and have a nice nap.

11. Have Manabe help you with your homework for the year OR visit a planet of your choice from Galaxy. - Less stress, more free time. Also since we’re working together there’s a 100% probability I’ll get A+ xD

12. Have Gouenji buy you a giant teddy bear OR have Sakuma buy you a penguin keychain. - I was thinking of buying it myself since no one has done it yet, but thank you Gouenji, you’re the best! <3

Tsunami will talk non-stop & drag me from place to place, Tenma is a cutipie & just seeing his adorable face will give me energy to keep running walking to keep up with Tsunami’s pace.

I wanna see that, they deserve it. Also I think Kyousuke would like it more, he just love his brother so much, he can wait till next year to have his bday party.

23. Go to a host club and have Minamisawa be your host OR go to a maid cafe and have one of the managers be your maid. - Ah both are so awkward... really awkward... I guess... I wouldn’t feel as awkward at the maid cafe... maybe?  Idk, both are places I want to visit to see if they’re just like in mangas/animes, but I think it’ll be too awkward for me to handle, but at least at the cafe I can just order, eat and go home.

24. Go shopping with Kirino to pick out a birthday gift for Shindou OR Have Kazemaru and Midorikawa go shopping to pick out a birthday gift for you. - At first I was like “Why are you doing this to me?!” and then I thought “Girl, you know what to do”. Is there anything betther than having my boy Kazemaru AND Mido spending some precious time to pick a bday gift for me? And since they bought it they can give it to me at my bday party & I’ll get to spend some time with them.

25. Let Fudou cut your hair OR let Burn and Gazel ‘mind’ your house for a week - Who in their right minds could agree with any of them? I’m not attached to my hair as I used to be, but that doesn’t mean I would let Fudou destroy it give me an extreme haircut. Not after letting Aphrodi treat it to make it look good as his. As for my house, it’s the only place I have, if Haruya&Suzuno burn it down, where am I going to live?

Maybe he’ll consider joining an agency just to be the center of the group? Even if he can’t sing, his good looks would make him the most popular/loved member.

Well... as much as I want to sleep between my boys, wich I’m sure would be a really warm&sweet experience (’cause I think Ran’s hair has a really sweet scent) imagine if I start drooling... on Ran’s arm or Takuto’s?! I can’t let that happen. Since we’re walking & they’ll stay for tea I can spend more time talking with Kaze&Fubu while we drink some black tea.

@inazuma-eleven-translations Part 2 was more difficult than part 1 & now I’m scared to play part 3, but I’ll do it anyways because this is really fun! Thank you once again for creating the game! ^^
