The Woodland Park Zoo had a spring event this past weekend, which I had to hit up for the fun enrichment. My favorite of all is the maned wolves - who you rarely ever get such a good chance to see!

One moment, they're elegant and ethereal. Then there's enrichment, and you realize they're just long-legged stinky goofballs [affectionate].

It's said to resemble a fox and a wolf, but in fact the maned wolf is the only species in the genus chrysocyon (meaning golden dog). It lives in grasslands and bushy areas of South America where it plays an important ecological role in the dispersal of fruit seeds. Animal Fact Files

I came across an animal from my country of origin in an animal alphabet book at work!

As I told the kids while reading the book, maned wolves are SUPER gentle and not at all dangerous (well, unless you're a chicken).

When I was 5 I got to feed a wild pack* a slab of meat at the local nature reserve in my state. They were so shy that other than the monks, the wolves would only be willing to go up to small children. And even then they were super shy and gentle -- only one wolf came up to me, slowly and gingerly, and geeently took the meat from my outstretched hand before darting back.

The book was called "A is for Axolotl"

Further fun facts about maned wolves:

- They are not actually wolves, they're the only surviving members of a unique canid group.

- Baby maned wolves look brownish black.

- In Brazilian Portuguese their name is lobo guará (lobo = wolf in Portuguese, guará= red in Tupi Guarani, an Indigenous language)

* Note: It was overseen by the monks who live at the reserve and feed the wolves every night -- don't feed wildlife unless it's an approved part of an official educational program!

Yeah, Greely grows to be bigger than all of them, even if he is the youngest of them, he's a very unique wolf !!

Here are some sketches of Mateo and Gabriela

Mateo is a maned wolf, he has very elongated features and is also a drug dealer. Fun fact about maned wolves, their urine smells like marijuana.

Gabriela is an Ocelot, her round features and youthful look really reminded me of the kitten-like appearance ocelots have.

All saw 10 characters apart from Cecelia (lioness) and her husband (boar) are going to be animals native to Mexico to give a nice cohesive theme to em.
