Noah fucking loved the holidays at Krovs because not only did he get to go out and party there was easy access to all kinds of party drugs and booze. The cambion conveniently forgot how much he suffered after these parties because of his collar and fully intended to get absolutely fucking destroyed for as much of the night as possible. It was freeing, the mixture of drunk and high, and he was already feeling real good from whatever Gwyn had given him and the drinks he'd pounded. He liked going back and forth and wandering the street in spite of most of his body being exposed to the cold air because of his costume. When he was mingled in with the crowds and with all the fun shit in his body he didn't notice so much but he'd separated a little and gotten turned around and was starting to feel the chill. Manny was stupidly working for part of the night which was annoying and Noah had gotten it into his head to look for him which is maybe why he'd wandered a little.
Shivering in spite of himself, he wandered back towards the main noise and the heat lamps that had been set up, wishing they'd actually set somewhere to meet or that Manny hadn't had to work. Luckily, though, he spotted the shifter and grinned, practically pouncing on him and pressing close, wrapping his arms around him both to get a little warmth and just be close to him. "There you are! 'Bout fuckin' time. I was lookin' for you. Who works when there's a party? You gotta stop takin' these holiday shifts it really kills the vibe." He laughed in spite of what he was just saying and kissed him, only a little sloppily. "Where you headed? Hope it's inside. If not, you're gonna have to warm me up."

Adrasia's shoulder lifted in a gentle shrug. "Perhaps. But I could be trapped here for your whole lifespan and still have thousands of years after to live freely as my nature directs me." He felt he had not expressed himself properly even as he said it, struggling a moment with the words. "I am capable of enduring. I do not brood out of pity for myself. I am..." He blew out a short breath, head bumping back against the tree as he looked up into its branches. "Well. I suppose it is as you say. Frustrated." Idling, yes. That was the worst part. Not even his hopeful overtures to the other slaves seemed able to cure that restlessness.
His eyes rested on the shifter as Manny thought over his answer. "Five years..." Adrasia echoed wonderingly. The pause lingered as he considered this, imagined Manny amongst the others in the Undercroft for that amount of time, at the mercy of the same masters. It was a queasy, unpleasant image. "You have borne it well," He finally said. There was one more question that yet remained in the angel's mind. They had never discussed it; the right moment didn't ever seen to come in their encounters. Perhaps there was no right moment, only the now. Adrasia would not do Manny the discredit of avoiding his eyes when he asked it, voice still soft, unaccusatory. "Was that when you became a demon?"
"Some would say that having more time to live makes the situation feel worse," Manny said. Thinking of one's foreseeable immortal future spent entirely in slavery chipped away at hope rather quickly. At least the mortal ones had an expiration date to look forward to finding freedom in death when a kind master and a hefty check wasn't coming their way. "A year feels like way more or less than that to anyone in this place. It seems to go by faster when it's spent idling in the Undercroft for more than half of it."
He turned to look out at the guests enjoying the outdoors while he mentally counted backwards. Now it felt like ages ago he'd been a slave himself, a memory lost until remembered. "I was in and out of the Undercroft a few times, actually," he replied as he turned back to Adrasia. "Two masters came and went twice. I was a slave for four, almost five years total."

"You already know I'm good at it." Noah snorted, but apparently he had to prove it. He finished his drink and dragged Manny off somewhere more private and showed him just how good his dancing was. After a little teasing it was confirmed that sex was definitely on the table. They had some fun with that and then eventually went their separate ways for the evening. Noah hoped they'd do something like that every Halloween since they had the last two years in a row. It was definitely something worth making a holiday tradition.

"How about you start dancing and if you're good at it, I'll confirm that sex is definitively on the table," Manny countered, smirking over the other in amusement.

"Maybe." Noah smirked back and snorted. "Only might be? That's not very nice. Better be on the table or there's no private dancin' at all." He pulled away from Manny slightly to take a sip of his drink, finally feeling like he was warming up. Manny's jacket helped, he was sure of that.
"Are you trying to bargain with me, Carmichael?" Manny raised a brow, smirking. "Sex might be on the table."

Noah had figured Manny wouldn't say no, though he tilted his head back like he was making a show of thinking about what he wanted. "What're you willin' to do?" Not that it would take very much at all, given how much Noah already wanted to do it, but the teasing was fun.
"I might be," Manny said coyly, meeting Noah's grin with one of his own. "What do I have to do to get one?" If he knew Noah he expected there wouldn't be much he'd have to do to earn the cambion's favor into such a deal.

"We did. Isn't that what I said?" Noah was briefly confused, wondering if he hadn't said what he thought he had but then shrugging it off. The cambion liked Euphoria better, it was definitely more his idea of a good party, but getting to cozy up with Manny in a booth like this definitely wasn't bad. "Play your cards right, maybe." Noah grinned. "You hopin' for a private encore?" It wouldn't be hard to talk Noah into that at all though he'd be equally happy to do it in public.
"Didn't we do some dancing last year?" Manny replied. He could've sworn that happened at some point, possibly at Euphoria's Halloween party. He liked where they were tonight better, much preferring Cannabites' more lowkey, sports bar vibe than the neon and EDM assault that begged for patrons to get the full experience of the club's name. He hooked an arm around Noah's shoulder, keeping his one hand free to sip on his drink. He grinned. "Why would I be sorry when I'm sure you'll give me an encore."

Noah shrugged. "I was pretty shit at school." He'd dropped out of high school long before graduation and due to all the shit at home he didn't remember doing very well even in the early grades. He'd learned to read and write and do basic math but he didn't remember much beyond that. The cambion though reading was boring anyway. Why read words when you could watch tv or a movie? That was way more exciting.
Also exciting was finally moving to a booth. He swayed a little when Manny moved away from him, blinking when Manny handed him his jacket. The cocktail of substances in his blood kept him from overthinking it or being weird about it and he just smiled and melted a little as he shrugged it on, pulling it close around him a little clumsily. It smelled like Manny and he liked that, he liked that a whole lot. "Thanks." He climbed into the the same seat, obviously, and latched himself onto Manny again once they were seated, leaning against his shoulder and winding an arm around him. He picked up his beer and sipped it then put it back on the table. "We shoulda gone dancin' like last year. 'Course I was dancing but you missed it with your work stuff." Noah wrinkled his nose to show his disapproval of that again. "I put on a helluva show, too. Bet you're sorry, huh?" He smiled up at him as he teased.
"Damn, even I learned about this in school all the way in New Jersey," Manny said. Any offense on the matter was all playful as in the end this wasn't a big deal. Very rarely did genuine conversations happen in Krovs and so Manny often forgot the difference in upbringings. For him, his early school years talked about the Iditarod while also using it as a theme for reading assignments. He couldn't remember the exact details behind this except that it'd been in second or third grade and he colored in a paper sled dog that was laminated and stuck on a wall among other students. Something about reading books moved their sled dogs along the classroom Iditarod trail...
Regardless, that wasn't the important matter here. The moment they both had their drinks, Manny nodded and led them over to the nearest empty booth. He politely broke their physical contact so that he could shrug off his jacket now that he was warming up and offered it out to Noah with a small smile. "Here, you've got a lot more exposed than I do. Get that chill out of your bones." He sat down and slid over so Noah could either join him in the same seat or sit across from him, either one.

Adrasia bit back a soft sigh, mirroring the shifter as he leaned sideways against the tree, pressing his shoulder into the bark. "I know. I know you're right. I have spent thousands of years free on this earth and a small fraction of those captive, when I weigh them against one another. Compared to many of those imprisoned here, I have... time." Time for what, though? The celestial's eyes still looked a little misty with consideration. A year was still a year, no matter how many one had at their disposal. It didn't feel right to spend it carelessly, like a coin tossed away into a fountain. He was quiet a moment, worrying at his lower lip with his teeth. Slowly, his gaze drifted back to Manny once more. "You never told me how long you were in the Undercroft before you were freed," Adrasia murmured, "May I ask?"
Manny waited patiently amid the silence, wondering what was going on behind those dark eyes. Or if Adrasia even wanted to share. He was okay standing with him in the quiet too if that was preferable to talking about it.
Oh.
His features softened to neutrality. "I see," he said at first, mainly to acknowledge and indicate he was processing a response. He moved to stand beside the older man with his back and one foot pressed against the tree trunk. "That must be, um..." He pressed his lips together and scrunched his nose as he considered the most appropriate feeling and word for this. There were so many to choose from that he could recall from his own experience as a slave approaching the first anniversary. One stood out the most. "Well, it must be frustrating to realize. I'm sorry." He refrained from point out that Adrasia had made it out of the Undercroft and was in the care of one of the better masters, but he quickly realized that wasn't particularly comforting. It wasn't a big change. Claimed didn't mean freed from this place as indicated by the new, fancier collar around the celestial's neck. "Sometimes... these things take more time to see actual changes," he added, turning his head so he could look at Adrasia with a small smile. "Doesn't mean you're not allowed to have a minute, of course. But don't give up hope so easily."

Noah shook his head. "Don't think so." At least Manny was still letting him touch him even if he was all offended now. It was very nice to touch him. "Nope, not even once. The fuck do I know about sled dogs? Barely even saw snow 'til I got here and never been to Alaska. Don't think we're even, either." He was distracted from that because the bartender gave them their drinks and he had to let go of Manny's jaw to grab his and took a grateful swig. "Think we can get a booth or somethin'? I'm tired of standing." He leaned a little more heavily against the shifter as if they hadn't been disagreeing a moment ago. At least he was getting warmer both from being inside and leeching off the guard's body heat.
"It is definitely a word." Now it was Manny's turn to be offended by the assumption of his sanity. He gave Noah an incredulous look, lips pursing together though didn't push the cambion away from physical contact. "I don't know, I think we're pretty even now that you're not believing me. Seriously, you never heard of the Iditarod? It's a big ass sled dog race along a trail in Alaska that's, like, over 900 miles or some shit and takes days. It's held every year in early March."

"Idita...what? That's not even a word." Noah looked completely baffled by it, giving Manny a weird look in his confusion. Now Manny was the one sounding crazy, that was a lot worse than the rescue dogs with the booze. He was laughing again soon enough though as the shifter flinched away from his poke and he leaned over to try and see on Manny's phone, though his eyes didn't focus very well on the little screen. "Ha!" He let out the triumphant exclamation when Manny confirmed that it was, in fact, a thing as Noah had known all along. "Told you! You made me think I was crazy." He shook his head but he was still smiling and rested it back on Manny's shoulder again a moment later, looking back up at him. He was so very pretty and he lifted a hand to touch him like he needed to confirm it, fingers tracing along his jaw a little clumsily. "How're you gonna make it up to me?"
"You're definitely not talking about the, like, Iditarod dogs that pull the sleds, are you?" Manny replied. That was where his mind went to first. He laughed, flinching away from Noah's prodding finger for a second. "Two beers," he said to the bartender who nodded and left them to fetch their drinks. Manny reached into his pocket to pull out his phone, not needing Noah's direction to Google this himself now that he desired the answers too. "All right, all right, let's see... 'snow dogs with the barrels'... Okay, here we go. A'ight, this sounds familiar to me now, the St. Bernards snow rescue dogs. Though a few sources say they had whiskey, some say brandy, others claim that alcohol being in there is an entire myth and that the barrels carry rescue supplies."

Adrasia's smile widened a little at Manny's expression, glad to be able to see the other's eyes. There was a flicker of some emotion he couldn't quite catch drifting off the shifter, but before he could think to pursue it, Manny was asking after his own. He didn't answer at once, eyes skating off over the lawn again. It was a beautiful day. Adrasia only wished he could enjoy it. Was it wrong of him to rob Manny of that enjoyment too? "Two weeks from now..." The celestial started slowly, still gazing off past the other as if he could see right into the mire of his own thoughts, "It will have been a year since I was brought to this place. A year with very little change."
"A little bit," Manny answered with a sheepish grin. Now that they were in the shade and he faced away from the sun he took them off and tucked them away in his pocket. Now he could properly take in the bright colors of Adrasia's outfit now that everything wasn't so dark, the white and gold a solid if perhaps a bit cliche for a celestial. Still, the scheme worked for Adrasia's skin tone and the tight-fitting waistcoat properly showed off his figure beneath the tailcoat and the sneak peak of chest... Not important right now. Back to the topic. "What are you thinking about if it's all right for me to ask?"

Manny seemed to think he was saying crazy shit (was he saying crazy shit?) based on the look he was giving him though he was laughing which made Noah laugh too. "What? C'mon, you know! The snow rescue dogs! They're big and slobbery and they wear that little thing on the collar? To give to people they find? Don't fuck with me everyone knows about that shit." He poked Manny in the side in retaliaton for making him feel crazy though he went back to basically clinging to him a moment later. "Won't argue you with you 'bout the drink. I'll definitely take a beer but then you have to look that shit up on your phone about the dog and the snow." He was apparently fixated on that for some reason and starting to wonder if he'd made it up. No, no he was sure he'd heard someone talk about it somewhere and wanted to prove it to Manny.
Manny was already leading Noah to the bar, prepared to buy the obviously inebriated cambion another drink because he'd asked. It wasn't like Noah had anything to do tomorrow so if he wanted to be extremely hungover that would be Noah's cross to bear. His brows furrowed and he whipped his back towards the other man, a confused smile spreading over his lips before the amusement fully struck. "What the actual fuck are you on about?" he laughed. "I've never heard of that before in my life, Carmichael. Fuck, let's get a drink in you stat, I think a beer should do the trick." He waved down a bartender to get two of those going, one for Noah and one for himself.

"I was!" Noah insisted, peevishly. "Just havin' fun while I was doin' it." Any irritation melted away quickly with the second statement and Manny was smiling so he clearly wasn't pissed or anything. The cambion had to take advantage of all the time at the party he could and he'd been doing just that. "How could I wait inside for you when I didn't know where you were gonna be? Doesn't make much sense." At least in Noah's fogged brain it didn't right now. He stayed glued to Manny's side as the shifter moved them towards the bar. "Water? No way, that's bullshit. Water's for the weak. Drink I'll take, though. What's supposed to make you warm? That shit they put in the barrels on the dogs that rescue people from the snow? You know what I'm talkin' about?" The name escaped him but hopefully Manny would know.
"I'm sure you were," Manny said, amused with an easy smile. It wasn't passive aggressive or jealous at all; what he could see in the wide eyes, dilated pupils and scents on Noah's breath the cambion certainly made do in entertaining himself. He laughed a little, letting Noah into his jacket once they were downstairs so that he could warm up faster. "Fuck, you're cold. Should've waited inside for me." He shuffled the both of them over to the bar and flagged down a bartender. "A drink should warm you up though maybe you might want some water," he teased.

Summer had fully arrived, at least within the shell of magic over Krovs. Usually Adrasia would have been glad of it, welcoming the season's change, but this June arrived with solemnity for the celestial. This was the month he'd been brought Krovs nearly a year before -- exactly a year before, in two weeks' time. What did he have to show for it? Friendships, he could not fault and indeed he treasured. Taliesin was gone but it was a bittersweet loss, imagining as Adrasia did that he was in a far better place, out of the castle's grasp. He was no closer to escape, though, and no closer to aiding in anyone else's. The life he led in Roland's charge was a quiet, pampered one. A year was nothing to a creature with over a thousand of them under his belt. And yet...
"Oh! Hullo, Manny." Adrasia straightened from his lean against the tree trunk, self-conscious that he'd been too deep in his thoughts to recognize the shifter's approach. The attire fit the guard well; he looked handsome, noble, even. Still, the celestial's smile did not quite reach his eyes, sensing the other's faint confusion, the slightest wisp of concern. That would not do. "Just... thinking. While there was a little quiet to spare." A bit of real amusement touched his face as he noted the dark shades over Manny's eyes. "Has the sun gotten to you, my friend?"
Manny snatched a glass of champagne off a passing tray as he traversed outside from the ballroom to get a little fresh air. The glare of the afternoon sun made him squint though fortunately he came prepared with sunglasses to protect his sensitive eyes. He wasn't sure if that was just him or part of being a daeva since those demons thrived in the night and darkness. Good thing he'd always been a night owl he supposed.
Regardless, he was at the point of wandering through the party in search of anyone he knew. His shielded gaze landed on a familiar figure dressed in white and gold barely hidden away from everyone else underneath the shade of the large trees in the grove.
"Adrasia," he greeted the celestial slave as he approached withe a smile, already feeling some relief from the sun within shadows. His gaze briefly drifted over the other's ensemble and then back up. Manny's joyful expression faded a little noting the lack of it in Adrasia's features. "Everything all right? You seem a bit... off."

Noah rolled his eyes exaggeratedly. "Should learn to say 'no' more. I was lookin' for you!" Not that he'd obviously held off on any of his partying but he had been looking for Manny and was glad he'd found him now, anyway. He couldn't tell what the guard's costume was if he was even wearing one but maybe it'd make more sense with the jacket off. "That's a good idea. Kinda cold out here." That was an understatement, especially since Noah was barely wearing anything.
They were inside soon enough, though, and the cambion was grateful for the warmth though he didn't move further away from Manny at all, in fact he unzipped the shifter's jacket (only fumbling a little) so he could slide his arms inside and around him to get more of his warmth. The statement made him grin. "Hell yeah. Couldn't wait all night for you, babe. Wanna have fun with you too, though." He leaned his head against Manny's shoulder and smiled up at him.
"Someone who really likes the holiday pay and has a hard time saying "no" to authority," Manny laughed as he greeted Noah in return. He also felt bad that the castle guards were so short staffed as they were, which only further motivated his guilt in refusal. But it was a few hours of his night and he was a few hundred dollars richer, so it wasn't so bad. Unlike Noah, he had on a jacket over his costume, though he could feel just how cold the cambion was from touching. No surprise with all the skin exposed out here; good thing it wasn't winter yet. "I'm definitely heading inside, you crazy? It's fucking freezing out when it was just hitting 70s the other day." Fall was here and soon enough winter would be too. He should break out his sweaters and cold weather clothing at some point... maybe this weekend.
He guided Noah inside of Cannabites so that the cambion didn't have to stay outside a second longer. He could smell the alcohol on Noah's breath and god knew what else –– he was fucked up, that was for certain. "Looks like you've been having plenty of fun already, Carmichael."
