DISCLAIMER: Please note that, just by reading this, you may succumb to the very phenomenon described here. My hope is that the next people or intelligent life who read this are either themselves resilient to it, or that enough time has passed that the sheer weight of this knowledge no longer causes such a heavy impact on the reader.

This is an attempt to record the phenomenon, once referred to colloquially as “ghosting,” that has resulted in a mass decrease in the Earth’s human population. More specifically, the latest estimate (prior to the disappearance of professionals who had counted) was that only 0.002% of human life remains.

In this series of accounts, I document interviews with remaining survivors of this phenomenon. For more details on the nature of the phenomenon itself, please click here. Otherwise or afterwards, read on at your own risk.

I encountered a woman by the name of Helena Stinchcomb when I saw the fourth floor of a large office building entirely lit up. Thinking perhaps it may have been an outpost containing multiple survivors, both my mission and my curiosity led me to that floor.

I rang the fully-functional doorbell at the back entrance of the first floor. I would consider breaking in only if I received no response, but just shy of a minute later, the very articulate voice of a young woman spoke, asking how she may help me. I explained that I was hoping to ask some questions relating to her take on recent events, but expressed that I understood if she declined to speak— multiple people had already done so for me at this point. You would understand my pleasant surprise when I heard the door bolt unlock, and I was invited in. The woman told me to come on in, explaining she would need to allow me to the fourth floor with her own badge, so she would meet me just inside shortly.

The office lobby seemed unremarkable, aside from its emptiness. The lights seemed to come on as soon as I walked in— likely on a motion-sensor.

It wasn’t long before a young, dark-haired lady emerged from a door that seemed to conceal a concrete staircase. She smiled at me as though I was a visitor to her office, urging me in with an energy that was both friendly and professional. She wore a dark, pin-stripe pantsuit, and her thin, black wireframe glasses only added to her aesthetic.

She showed me upstairs, thanking me for my patience. She explained she was in a meeting until just a few minutes ago, and that the speaker system that allowed me to speak with her outside was across the office. Of course, I asked her how many people were stationed on that floor. To my own disbelief, she estimated nearly 30 folks were in-office that day.

At this time, we entered the fourth floor’s reception area, which appeared entirely empty. She waved to the empty reception desk on her left briefly, not ceasing her conversation with me about the work they did there. She explained that she worked for a newer kind of advertising firm— when in the 2020’s, social media and technology users realized the extent to which their information was being used without their consent, such firms opened up, acting as a middleman between web users and advertisers who wanted their attention. In essence, she explained, users would come to these firms seeking to sell their web usage data to these advertisers, and the firms would act as representatives for these individuals to advertisers, who they often partnered with for competitive pricing.

As she finished explaining this, we entered her office. She asked me to wait just a moment while she typed away— a quick message, she said, to one of her part-time work-study students, asking if she could bring the two of us some bottled water and cookies. As she finally closed her laptop, she thanked me once again for my patience and gave me her full attention. The transcript of our interview is as follows:

SH: So, tell me about yourself. What’s your name?

HS: My name is Helena Stinchcomb. I serve in senior leadership here at The People’s Information firm.

SH: It’s very nice to meet you. How has the Ghosting Phenomenon impacted you?

HS: Do you mean personally, or professionally?

SH: Oh, uh— both, provided you’re up to speaking to them.

HS: Sure, I’ll start with personally, since that’s less complex. A few people close to my circles apparently ghosted, but I’ve yet to have anyone in my innermost circles ghost, themselves.

SH: That’s fantastically fortunate, given the numbers.

HS: [laughs] Yeah, I guess you could say that. It’s hard to trust the numbers anymore, though.

SH: How do these people in your circles spend their time?

HS: [hesitating] I— you know, I’ve been so absorbed in my work lately, I really should reach out to them and ask instead of answering that at this time.

SH: Sure thing, thank you for that. Let’s talk about work, then. How has the Ghosting Phenomenon impacted workflow?

HS: Honestly, it’s mostly the same. Lots of people are hiding out in their homes, and are trying to work less at times like this. This, as you can imagine, drives their web usage way up. We’ve since fortified our model for online communications with clients so they never have to meet us in-person. This is the perfect recipe for helping them earn some money just by using the internet.

SH: Have you, personally, been able to reap any benefits as a result of your strong model’s success?

HS: Well, I’m in the process of giving everyone else in this office a sizable raise to recognize our efforts.

SH: How many folks did you say are in-office, today?

HS: Hmm, I’d say probably just under 30.

SH: All holed up in their office, I take it?

HS: Some of them are a little concerned with ghosting and are isolating there, yes, but not all of them.

SH: What of the others? I don’t think I’ve seen anyone else here yet, today.

HS: [briefly hesitating] I haven’t seen many, but our receptionist Patricia waved to us just in the door. You must have just missed her.

SH: Ah, I see— my mistake. Maybe I’ll catch her once we’ve finished up here and apologize for that.

HS: I think you’d love her— she’s always smiling. Very sweet woman.

SH: So, enough about business— what do you do when you’re not working?

HS: [laughs] Sleeping? We keep pretty busy here, so I work long days, six days a week.

SH: So you just hang loose on your one day off?

HS: Typically, yes. I have three little ones at home— Jack is six, Joseph is seven, and Elena is twelve. They keep me busy in other ways. I’m thankful to my partner for sticking around at home to watch them.

SH: A stay at home parent, then?

HS: Yes, and I’m grateful that she is so willing and capable.

SH: I’m sure she’s lucky to have you, too.

HS: Thank you. [smiles] I like to think so.

SH: If I may ask— [I was cut off by the sudden manifestation of bottled water and small bags of chips on the desk between me and Helena]

HS: [looking at an empty space adjacent to her desk] Ah, thank you, Patricia! Sunny, I’d like for you to meet our receptionist.

SH: [Greeting the empty space] Hello, it’s so nice to meet you. Sorry I missed your hello, earlier.

HS: [After a momentary silence in the room, smiles and chuckles] That’s excellent, Patricia. Thanks so much for bringing this by!

(As if some invisible entity had left the room, Helena’s attention returned to the interview.)

HS: Sorry, what were you saying?

SH: No worries. I was going to ask if you could speak on your perspective of the Ghosting Phenomenon more specifically.

HS: [letting out a deep sigh] I think local leadership has been excellent, given the circumstances of it all. I know it’s still a touchy topic for some people, but I’m still certain that there have been massive exaggerations about the impact of the Ghost Phenomenon on society. Am I saying it’s fake? No. I’m saying it was being used as a ham-fisted tool for social control.

SH: I see... Yes, I can see that causing a mass panic surrounding the phenomenon is usable as a strategic power-move.

HS: I’m so glad you agree. I feel like people are going crazy over a phenomenon that has long since passed.

SH: When was the last time you heard news of a ghosting?

HS: [pausing to think] It’s been a pretty long time… Probably nearing two years, now?

SH: Two years…

HS: I could be a little bit off, but probably by no more than a couple of months. It came and went like that. [snaps her finger]

SH: Ah, I see. Well, before I wrap this interview up, is there anything else you’d like to say to my readers?

HS: Don’t believe everything you hear. Trusting people can be too easy. It takes discipline to distinguish delusion from reality.

At the conclusion of this interview, Patricia and I exchanged a few formalities before she showed me back down to the door at my request.

Just to make things absolutely clear: There was not a soul in Helena’s office space apart from the two of us. She spoke to thin air when a Ghost had evidently brought us those snacks— likely in response to the message she had sent out earlier. As stated in my previous post, the general work completed by ghosted individuals in their pre-phenomenon lives remained mostly unchanged. I recall reading about bosses who would send emails to their ghosted employees with assignments, only for the assignments to be completed somewhat quickly. These bosses would scarcely receive reply, but if they ever did, it was in the form of an incoherent, word-vomit sort of email, much like many of the messages you might see online today.

Helena seems to have survived this phenomenon by deluding herself into believing all of these people never vanished. Although nothing could be farther from the truth, I couldn’t bring myself to try and question that reality of hers during our interview. Should I have succeeded in casting doubt on the coping mechanism she had developed, she would have likely ghosted shortly thereafter. My hope is that she continues to live happily as such, blissfully unaware of the empty society in which she lives.

Fading Light

Markus x Reader

Summary: This was supposed to be a peaceful march between humans and androids to raise awareness of the cause. You never thought you would see so much red and blue blood splattered all over the white snow that blankets the street.

Author’s note: i...got a lil carried away on this one. this is kind of an au-ish where i do a better job at world-building than d*vid c*ge and i create a more realistic freedom protest march/demonstration. it isn’t sadistic though i do acknowledge in the story something that could possibly happen at protests that resonates a bit to today’s reality. alright-y!! get ready for a lil hurt/comfort, babeyy

You hate how the world has come to, specifically the United States.

The national news becomes a smear campaign against androids, trying to shove misinformation down the general public’s throat. You knew better, hell, a whole lot of people knew better than to believe them. Androids had grown tired of being exploited for their free labor and being mistreated by those in power that they have every right to be a bit angry.

Many humans joined their fight alongside them, including you. You are not only fighting for Markus, but for his fellow androids as well.

You are no stranger to the protest life. After seeing injustice done upon those who have done no wrong, you knew you had to step up. You completed training to become a street medic to provide medical aide during protests and demonstrations. No matter who needed the help, either human or android, you are prepared for the worst. Your role became more crucial as more protests and rallies formed all over Detroit. Police did not like the sudden up rise of human involvement with the android revolution but you always wondered if anyone has ever read a history book.

You, Markus, alongside North, Simon, and Josh, walk down the steps of the mall. You hug the backpack on your shoulders a little tighter as you look below to see the major turnout of androids and humans alike. You feel a warm hand over your white-knuckled hand that held one hell of a grip to the backpack strap.

“Are you okay?” Markus’ voice is full of concern and you wonder how he manages to be concerned for others while maintaining his cool. You take his hand into yours and give it a gentle squeeze.

“Don’t worry about me. I’ll be alright, you know.” And he did know that you are more than capable in handling yourself but despite the liberation, his programming made care-taking his main priority. Markus had carried all the weight of the revolution on his shoulders even though he shouldn’t. There are organizers both human and android alike that back him up on all his decisions yet he still takes on most of the responsibility.

You take his hand in yours and together you walk together to regroup with the others. Today is the day of the biggest marches that has ever been organized all year. With the response rate of attendance in the thousands, this type of uproar did not go unnoticed with your fellow friends at ZNN. You had hoped that with a mix of both humans and androids alike, the police would tread lightly.

But you could be wrong.

Drowning in the sea of signs, flags, and high energy, Markus makes his way to the front of the crowd with a megaphone in hand. He addresses the crowd, thanking them for joining in the fight, and telling them about the non-violent approach for this protest. With everyone in sound agreement, you begin your march down the main street towards city hall where you would occupy the space until someone would listen. The air is full of different chants from humans and androids alike. Some random bystanders also join up in arms in the fight and everyone welcomes the newcomers. You spot the press along the sidewalk and you can’t help but roll your eyes.

They view you as some oddity for wanting the right for androids to own their bodies and thoughts.

As soon as you round the corner, your heart sinks down into your stomach as your worst nightmare comes true. In full riot gear, the police force builds a barricade blocking the street essential to getting to city hall. Being in the front lines isn’t the most ideal place to be during a potential riot but you are a street medic after all. There’s a tinge of fear when you realize that you may be a potential target for these cops.

Markus comes to a stop, the crowd soon following suit. He takes a step forward but you reach out for him to stop.

“What are you doing” you question him, eyes bewildered at the thought of Markus getting into deep trouble.

“Just going to give them a little talk, that’s all.” His voice is soothing to your eyes and as much as you want to believe, you are still on edge. Markus places a small kiss on your temple and turns back to face the riot squad.

“Stand down! Disperse and go home!” A voice comes from the truck’s own megaphone. The police place their shields in front of them as an attempt to inflict fear. You’d be lying if you said you weren’t scared.

Markus puts his hands up in the air and the crowd soon follows suit. He brings the megaphone up to his mouth. “We are unarmed civilians only trying to express our right to freedom of speech. You wouldn’t shoot at an unarmed crowd, would you?”

None of the officers flinch at his words. Markus continues.

“You are being filmed. Any action you do is being televised as we speak. What would the public view you as? The heroes or the enemies?”

You move a bit forward with your hands still up in the air. The rest of the crowd takes initiative after you and you begin to inch a little towards Markus. Nothing seems to happen and you thought they may give up because of the media presence. However, the sounds of a heavy vehicle rumbles through the ground then you realize what is coming.

“No,” you say under your breath. Before you could warn the crowd behind you, some throws a canister of tear gas into the crowd. A plume of smoke blurs your vision and you yell to everyone to retreat. Due to the nature of androids, they aren’t phased by the effects of tear gas but they understand that humans cannot. Josh tells you that he’ll get as many humans to get away as possible and, in a rush, you tell him to seek out the other street medics for you will stay in the front lines. Some brave humans stick it out, however, and you immediately begin to give out as many water-soaked bandannas as possible to prevent inhaling the gas.

Though, this was only the beginning.

As soon as they saw the tear gas was being chucked to the side by androids, they send in the more heavier artillery. The barricade opens ever so slightly to aim their guns full of rubber bullets. With that much velocity at such a close range, the damage to anybody could possibly be catastrophic.

They fire at will.

A bullet misses your head and you thank the Lord for the close call. The bullets begin to attack some humans and some fall to their knees out of pain. Blood begins to fall onto the white snow and you can’t believe the audacity of the riot squad to go through with this order. Blue blood soon begins to follow and you watch androids get tormented by these bullets. You instruct the medics to get everyone to safety away from the action. You crouch down to get to people without getting hit, helping them up and walking them to safety. You hand them off to the volunteers, turning back into the action.

The air is still misty from the previous attack and you navigate your way towards the front. You notice North and Simon, then you finally find Markus riddled in blue blood. As you try to get to him, another bullet shoots out, striking him on the shoulder. Markus tries to remain strong but the bullet takes a big chunk of his shoulder out and his insides become vulnerable and exposed. A police officer tries to throw another canister of tear gas but North stops it before it can hit the ground and throws it back to the riot squad. This provides a good distraction to help Markus to his feet.

“Come on,” you insist, propping his arm over your shoulder and getting him back up on his knees. Markus is in much worse condition than you thought. Since he remained at the front and the police immediately identified him as the leader, he got the brute end of the stick. Markus took most of the heat if this meant protecting everyone. Blue blood spurts out from his chest where he took some hits near his thirium pump, his face was battered and bruised, and, worst of all, his shoulder. Markus’ arm had been badly damaged with cracks exposing his intricate insides and you desperately want to cry because seeing your love be torn down like this made your heart ache.

“You don’t have to,” Markus hoarse voice breaks the silence between you two. You immediately shake your head as you continue forward away from the riot.

“No, don’t say that.” You swallow thickly to continue the sob at the edge of your throat. Chaos surrounds you two as you try to yell at everyone to make way for you and Markus. You wonder why there was a sudden wave of noise until you look over your shoulder and spot a cop acting alone.

“Hand over Jericho’s leader,” he screams at you and you know you can’t let this pig win.

“He is bleeding and needs medical treatment,” you try to explain to the officer as you continue to walk with him. Markus whispers to you, asking you what you are doing provoking the officer but you just ignore him. You know what you’re doing. You and Markus continue to take small steps until you hear the sound of the gun being cocked and ready to fire.

When you think he won’t fire, the officer fires at your shoulder.

At first, you can’t believe he went through with his intention. You almost collapse at the pain but Markus pulls you back up with the hand over your shoulder. You hear a scrimmage behind you and you turn to see Simon tackling the officer for you. You want to tell him to stop, afraid he might get caught and arrested for his fate is undetermined. Markus sends out a message via the built-in telecommunication between other androids to address Simon. Don’t kill the man, just put him to sleep and disarm him.

Warm blood trickles down your arm and you feel yourself become lightheaded at the mere fact. Being a street medic didn’t particularly cure yourself of your fear of blood; only slightly. Markus can tell you aren’t doing so well and stops abruptly to examine you.

“You’re bleeding heavily,” Markus states but you close your eyes at the sound of his voice.

“And you are, too.”

“Why keep dragging me? I am just dead weight at this point. Some of my systems are failing as we speak.”

You maneuver over towards a darken alley away from the chaos. You check over your shoulder twice to make sure that no one is following you two and place Markus up against the brick wall behind the garbage bin.

“Because this world isn’t worth saving, but you are.” You place your free hand on Markus cheek and with his own uninjured arm, he covers yours with his. You take your backpack and reach for the blue blood you have with you. You instruct him to take some to replenish what he has lost while you get to work at creating a temporary solution to fix the cracks on his shoulder. You blink away any pain from your injured shoulder but Markus immediately notices.

With a gentle hand, he checks the damage on your shoulder. Luckily for you, the bullet went clean through your skin, missing any major arteries and only grazing across your shoulder. It is still messy but you couldn’t have asked for a better outcome.

“You’ll live, though I highly suggest you get to a hospital soon.”

You nod your head as you work on his shoulder. “Does your programming happen to know how to take care of this type of wound?”

Markus breathes in shallowly as you place a few spare components along his shoulder.

“I could try, but I won’t be as good as you.” Markus laughs softly as you bump your forehead on his nose and give him a playful look. Even in the worst of times, he still manages to bring out the bright side.

“Look at us, fixing each other’s wounds. Other couples could never,” you snort then close your eyes when the alcohol solution stings. Markus apologizes but you know he’s only doing what he needs to do.

Markus takes the bloody hand towel and tosses it to the side, grabbing a much cleaner one and putting pressure on the wound. “How did we get so lucky?”

You pause for a moment to reflect on the question. You were certain it had been a hypothetical one but you did want to know the answer. Markus trains his eyes on you when you stop what you’re doing.

“Maybe there are still good things left on this Earth.” A small smile forms on your lips and Markus mirrors your own action. He leans over and you catch his lips, falling into a soft kiss. Markus places his hand on your neck to bring you closer with a gentle caress. You feel tears fall down your cheek but you don’t let go. Markus can feel how damp your cheeks are getting so he stops to search for answers.

“What’s wrong?” You take a hold of his hand and bring them closer to kiss his hand.

“I thought I was going to lose you back there.”

Markus moves his hand so now that it’s on top of yours. He gives it a soft squeeze and looks into your eyes.

“I had to do what I had to do to keep everyone safe. In the back of my mind, I kept thinking of you to remain strong, to keep going. And you, my love, you took a bullet, a courageous act beyond words. You truly are the epitome of strength.” You bury your head into the crook of Markus’ neck and let out a sigh.

Summary: You work for the Avengers as their social media consultant and love them all individually, but you can’t seem to connect with the one man you long for, Bucky. Will he ever need your help or bond with you?

Author’s Note: This is my first fanfic! I have been a fan of reading other people’s work for a long time, and i thought it was time for me to give it a go. This story takes place after the events of Civil War, in a universe where Steve and his team have made up with Tony and the others, and they’re all living happily ever after in the Avengers Tower. The Avengers are capable of many things, and are especially talented at tasks that involve saving the world. They all have unique abilities and personalities that make each of them different assets to the team, but they do all have one thing in common, they all suck at communicating with said world they tend to save. The Avengers are some of the kindest and most caring people in the universe, but they have a tendency to be extremely uncomfortable in the public eye, except for Tony Stark of course.

That’s where you come in. You were hired a few months after the incident with the Sokovian Accords to represent the Avengers as their agent of sorts. You were to monitor and support their online presence, and help them with public appearances. The Avengers have very big reputations held around the world; most see them as good, hard working individuals, but there are those who are scared of their capabilities and don’t realize that they are people with feelings as well. Pepper hired you to basically create social media accounts for each of the team members who agreed, and to help them post, share and expand their online lives as well as encourage them to make appearances in public with fans and other public figures.

Most of the team was down to try this new form of communication with the world, Tony pretty much had them convinced that it would lead to the world seeing the Avengers in a better light; less menacing and destructing, and more helpful and caring. There was just one person who was against the idea of having his life displayed on the internet for the world to see, and that was Bucky.

You can’t say you blame him; he hasn’t been in this new age of technology for very long, and he still is having a hard time with his past and accepting who he is. While you’re not surprised he didn’t want your assistance or anything to do with you really, you can’t say you’re not disappointed. From the moment you saw him standing in Steve’s shadow, you’ve been fairly intrigued with him. Sure Bucky is incredibly tall, dark and handsome, but he also gives off the vibe of a lost puppy, like you just want to hold him and tell him everything will be okay.

In those first moments when Pepper introduced you to the team, something blossomed in you. You were incredibly excited to be working with some of the most famous people in the nine realms, but you were extremely looking forward to working with Bucky. He was so quiet and still, yet polite in the subtlest way. You wish you could say that when he looked into your eyes and said hello, sparks flew and you could both feel the chemistry between you, but he didn’t raise his eyes once in the time he was being introduced.

You guessed you weren’t surprised, you had been warned that he wasn’t quite up to meeting even more new people, he had only been on the compound for a couple months. You had a feeling that it was going to take Bucky a long time to come around, he had been through so much and you were a complete stranger to him. But you were willing to wait for as long as it took.

It’s been five months since you’ve joined the Avengers’ world, and you can honestly say this has been some of the best few months of your life. The whole team has been so caring and kind to you, and you consider some of them to be your best friends. You had moved into the Avengers Tower right away, to more fully experience the lives of the team members and learn more about them. All of them have taken you under their wings and have (almost) completely opened up to you, which has helped a lot with your job. All of them except for Bucky that is.

Wanda has quickly become one of the best friends you’ve ever had. You think she has taken to the whole social media aspect of her life the best. She is constantly posting selfies with Vision on her snapchat, and her fans have recently started shipping them together, much to her embarrassment. Vision isn’t much of a sharer, but he does love to post photos of nature on his Instagram you set up. You think it reminds him of simpler times when the world was much less chaotic.

Clint is a huge fan of social media now, his most recent post was a photo of his little son trying out his bow and arrow for the first time! He got some backlash from some concerned mothers, but you think it’s really nice for the world to see that the Avengers are capable of having normal families and experiencing love too. And then there’s Sam. That boy will be the end to your career. Sam had a fairly normal life before he joined the Avengers so he wasn’t a stranger to social media, but that doesn’t mean he’s any good at it. It’s been on multiple occasions now that you’ve had to issue public apologies for an accidentally shared dick pic to his snapchat story, as opposed to being sent to a (hopefully) interested, single girl.

Steve has surprisingly adapted to this new technology very quickly, he truly is a very smart man. Facebook is his favorite because even though his old friends from before he went into the ice are almost 100 years old, a few of them had Facebooks that were set up by their younger family members, and he actually was able to meet up with a couple of them. The first time he had found one of his former Hollowing Commandos was a day you will never forget. You were sitting on the opposite end of the couch from him, when all of a sudden he jumps up and yells, “Holy Hell!” You knew it had to be something big if Steve had used such vulgar language. Bucky even went with Steve to meet up with this man, their former teammate.

That was the first time you had seen Bucky truly happy. The first couple of months you had been at the Tower, Bucky hadn’t talked much. He would ask you to pass the salt or sit with you while you watched Netflix in the common room, but he didn’t engage in any deep conversations like you were hoping for. Even still, you were willing to wait.

But after that experience with Steve and their old friend, Bucky began to seek you out around the Tower and ask you questions, mostly about technology and how to use it. Tony had bought him an iPhone, so he had the capability to use social media and the internet, it was just the fact of whether he wanted to or not.

One night, he approached you after dinner while you were helping Natasha choose a photo of her and Clint’s daughter to post. He sat next to you and just watched for a while. He tended to do that, just sit in silence and observe people with his piercing blue eyes. You have to admit, it gives you butterflies every time.

After Natasha left, he scooted closer to you, looking quite nervous. You’re sure you probably looked the same; you couldn’t help it, he smelled like a mixture of vanilla and something manly, something all his own. It was intoxicating. He turned to you and in the quietest and most heartbreaking voice he could muster, asked if you could help him set up a social media account or two.

You had never been so excited, and you’re sure your face showed it. “Of course! What kind of account would you like?” you asked. “Something photo based, something for connecting with old friends, something to just write your thoughts and rant?” Nowadays, there are so many different sites for every type of need or desire.

“Well Steve seems to really enjoy that one website where he found some of our old friends, the one with the book” Bucky replied. You let out a small giggle, “It’s called Facebook, people from all around the world use it. You can share photos, videos, or your thoughts on the day. You can even get the news and all the hottest gossip on there, not that you seem like much of a gossiper.”

“That sounds good; I don’t want to share much about myself, but I’d like to see what my old friends and their families are up to. What other sites are there?”

You proceeded to tell Bucky all about your favorite sites like Instagram, Snapchat, Tumblr and Pinterest. You sat for what felt like hours, laughing and looking over the other team member’s profiles. He really opened up, telling you about the old friends he wanted to see and the activities he was interested in. You had no idea that he was into art, but when you came across a fan page who sketched him and the rest of the Avengers among other celebrities, he got so excited to see someone take their time to honor him that way. It felt so comfortable, just sitting with him and taking in every second. It was all you could from running your fingers through his long, unkempt hair like you had been itching to do since the moment you saw him. You finally decided to show him your Instagram, and that’s when things got strange.

It was completely silent for about five minutes while he scrolled through your photos, taking the time to read each individual caption. It would have been fine, if there wasn’t a big frown etched into Bucky’s face. The brilliant sparkle that had appeared in his eyes during your talk had gone away, leaving you confused as to what went wrong.

He finally finished, locked your phone, and handed it back to you. You’re sure you must have looked worried as Bucky stood, thanked you for the help, and proceeded to leave the room, and you, in the dark.

Three days had gone by without so much as a glance from Bucky. It was like he was purposefully avoiding you. You didn’t understand, he had just started opening up to and spending time with you. You couldn’t figure out what you had done wrong, you thought there was a real connection that night. You decided to go to Steve for advice, if anyone was to know what was going on, it was him right?

You approached Steve that night after Bucky had quickly gone to bed and asked him if he had noticed anything different about Bucky lately.

“Now that you mention it Y/N, he was doing really well for the past couple of weeks. I often saw him with a smile on his face for no reason and talking more to everyone. I don’t know why, but now that I think about it, the past couple of days he has been back to his usual brooding self. Do you know why?”

“Unfortunately, I was hoping you did.” you replied back. “A few days ago, Bucky came up to me and asked if I would help him set up some accounts online for him. We spent a couple hours just talking and having a really great time, it was almost as if the Winter Soldier never even existed, he was just a great guy. But then he randomly just got up and left, and now he won’t even look at me. I don’t get it Steve, I really thought we were making progress.” Tears started welling up in your eyes as you finished talking.

“Y/N whoa whoa, it’s okay, don’t cry.” Steve quickly hugged you close to him. He considered you to be one of his closest friends, and he hated to see you upset. He had suspected you had feelings for Bucky for quite a while, but he never prodded into it, instead he opted to wait until you were ready to open up to him about it.

“I can’t think of anything I said that might have turned him off from me,” you sniffled. “He grew quiet and almost sad-looking while he was looking through my Instagram, and then he just left”.

“Was there maybe something on your Instagram that could have made him upset?”

“Not that I can think of. All my posts are just of my travels, friends and family. I don’t think there’s anything offensive. Steve, I don’t know what to do. I really like Bucky, like more than a friend. I thought I finally had a shot…”

“Y/N, maybe you should just talk to him about it? I’ve known Bucky for a long time, and he’s more likely to say what’s wrong if you approach him about it instead of letting it lay there.”

“You’re probably right Steve, I’ve waited this long for my shot, I’m not going to let him slip away. Thanks, Capsicle.” Steve cringed as you laughed and walked away to plan what you would say to Bucky.

You found him the next morning in the training room, murdering his third punching bag of the day. He was so concentrated on his workout, he didn’t hear you open the door. You stood there for a while, just watching how his muscles stretched and glistened with sweat. His metal arm was a blur of shine as he beat the bag, over and over, as if he was letting out all the stress from his whole lifetime. You briefly forgot your mission as you stared in awe at how incredibly attractive he was.

And then the bag let out a huge rip and spilled beans all over the floor of the gym, and you immediately snapped back to your senses. Bucky let out a defeated sigh before he turned and saw you still standing in the doorway.

“I was just finishing. You can have the room” he quickly muttered and looked away, he couldn’t even say your name.

“Actually Buck, I came to talk to you” you decided to cut right to the chase. “Why have you been avoiding me the past few days?”

“I don’t know what you mean. I have to get going.” Bucky tried to push past you into the hall.

“Oh no you don’t.” You held your arm out and pushed him back with such force, it surprised you both. “We’re going to talk about this. I know you’ve been avoiding me, you can’t even look at me. Why? I thought we had a really good time the other night.”

Bucky just stared at the floor. Was he purposefully trying to piss you off even more?

“Jesus Buck, was it something I said, did I offend you? I can’t make this right until you tell me what’s wrong.”

He raised his eyes to sheepishly look at you, but still, Bucky was silent.

“Fuck Bucky, are you really going to make me say this? I like you okay! I’ve been waiting months for you to open up to me, to want to talk to me. And then we finally have a great time together, or so I thought, and then you just get up and walk away like nothing happened!” you let out in one, fast breath.

Silence falls for a moment, you refusing to say another word until he does.

After what seems like an eternity of awkwardness, Bucky lets out a deep sigh and opens his mouth to speak.

“I had no idea you felt that way about me. I thought you were friendly to everyone, I didn’t think anyone could like me after everything I’ve done. When I was looking through your Instagram, I saw all your friends and family, all the amazing places you’ve travelled and all the people you’ve met. It was filled with smiles and adventure, and you were surrounded by people who made you look like the happiest and most beautiful woman on the planet. I got sad because although I wanted to, I didn’t think I could ever make you feel that happy or put that dazzling smile on your face. I thought by distancing myself, I could keep my negativity and darkness away from your light. I- I love you, I love everything about you, but it’s for the best Y/N.”

You stood there, stunned, not knowing what to say. You finally gave him a soft smile and wrapped your arms around his thick torso in the most comforting hug you’ve ever had.

“Bucky,” you breathed into his chest. “You’re what makes me happy. I wake up happy everyday knowing that I get to see you. The best part of my day is sitting with you watching TV or helping you make dinner. We don’t even have to be speaking, and you still make my heart sing. From the first day I saw you, I knew I wanted you. I don’t care if you come with troubles and insecurities, that’s part of you and I love you for it. There’s no getting rid of me, Barnes.”

He was quiet for a moment while you continued to hug him, hoping that he’d finally realize that you would always be there for him, to put a smile on his face. Finally, he lifted your chin up to so that your eyes met his. You just stared at each other in what felt like the most peaceful quiet that has ever occurred, before he locked his lips onto yours in such a loving and vulnerable way, as if he completely surrendered himself to you. You smiled against his lips, which caused him to smile onto yours.

“See?” you broke away, breathless. “You can make me smile.”

“I guess I can,” Bucky chuckled. “You better get used to it, because I’m not going anywhere now.”

You had waited for what felt like a lifetime for this moment, but for forever with Bucky? It was all worth it.
