okay so I reread Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne in the middle of the night, which completes my Tanemura Trifecta of youth (1) SDC, 2) Full Moon, 3) Kaitou Jeanne). Like. I read basically anything I could get my hands on of hers until about like. idk. 2011-2012? I don't think I ever finished sakurahime. But I liked these ones the most, in that order, and it still stands.
Honestly Kaitou Jeanne is mostly a hot mess with some interesting ideas that's executed not very well executed most of the time. Lot of telling not showing. Lot of wack pacing and sudden forced romantic subplots. Noin also exists and I literally can't stand him at all and anything that comes with him everything about him is horrible I am not sorry get him out of here. But the strengths it has is with Maron and Chiaki for sure, who are delightful to watch interact, or just Maron's personal journey. A lot of the other ideas are good even if the execution is a bit sloppy. I think if it was redone it'd really slap and it'd just have a tighter grip on what it wants to say.
Full Moon is like wack pacing central oh my god that first volume feels like speedrunning three volumes worth of content. Ya girl had not figured that shit out after Kaitou Jeanne or Kyouko and it shows. Uh but most of the romantic sideplots are compelling in their own right. Sometimes the character subplots are better than the main one? (Moe and Fuzuki....) Not really a criticism, because there's still a fun dynamic with Takuto and Mitsuki, but the thing I always liked about Full Moon first and foremost wasn't the romance but the conversation about grief, and loss, and death. That's the stuff that always sticks with me, and it's definitely the strongest part. Full Moon has a lot it wants to say about dying and compassion and choosing life, and I think of Tanemura's works, its the most cohesive in that regard.
And SDC is...everything happens so fucking much over there. There are tiny hints of Tanemura's compulsion for everyone to get paired up which really only rears its head in the last chapter with like bit panels, and there are a few small instances of things being told and not shown, but to be completely fucking honest this one wins the fucking PRIZE for pacing and foreshadowing and like. Show don't tell. People (including myself) used to dunk on the twist of Maora being the postman coming out of left field but actually on the reread....the clues were ABSOLUTELY there the ENTIRE time starting in chapter ONE. Stellar execution. Even scenes that feel like they're going to fast are revealed at later points to have much deeper meaning and implication than we could fathom the first time around, (this post is good at talking about that w/ regards to chapter one's confession), and reveals are timed precisely when they would hit HARDEST.
But also SDC has the craziest shit i've ever read in my life in there. Ushio's storyline is extremely messy, mostly because it features Senri, who is like Noin 2.0 and I hate him and I want him to die, and literally literally if you just took him out and replaced him with a guy her age it would be vastly improved it just would. Maora and Maguri's romance and individual character journies are extremely fun and cute, and I overall like it, but y'know a better job could be done unpacking the gender stuff for sure. It's an earnest first effort, but definitely might have needed some workshopping. AND WHATEVER THE FUCK IS HAPPENING WITH KAZUHITO AND MAIKA DEFINITELY NEEDED WORKSHOPPING TOO BECAUSE HOO BOY. I'm not a Kazuhito hater I just think what she clearly wanted to accomplish over there is not what it actually reads like. It would not be impossible to do, but it doesn't entirely work correctly in its current form.
Which is a little. Unfortunate. Because SDC is in large part about family, and while I think Haine's relationship with every member of he convoluted family is really interesting and well done, the relationship among the Kamiya parents just kind of makes it a lot harder to accept. That said the family shit with the Togu twins is incredible, showstopping, iconic, 10/10, and Takanari is still the best love interest in one of these ever of all time FUCK you fight me. I just think it's good. Even with its problems.

YOOOOOO HELLO HELLO WHAT’S UP, I GOT A QUESTION FOR Y’ALL READING THIS!!!
SO BASICALLY!
I WANT TO NAME THE FICTIONAL WORLD OF ONE OF MY WIPS “MAORA” (the title of the wip would be “the sixteen mages of maora” or something similar) BUT I LOOKED IT UP TO SEE IF THERE WAS ANYTHING SIMILAR TO IT ALREADY EXISTING AND NOW I’M AFRAID THAT ITS GONNA SOUND TOO SIMILAR TO MĀORI !!!!
WHICH IS IN FACT ,,,,, A REAL THING THAT EXISTS! māori are (according to wikipedia so this could be inaccurate bc i don’t know enough to correct it if wrong) the indigenous Polynesian people of new zealand! and while in the back of my mind i think i knew that māori was already a thing that existed, i completely forgot about it because i Did Not Think!!! which is why i do google searches babey!
SO ESSENTIALLY, i don’t wanna be misconstrued n stuff, cuz like, i’d like to err on the side of caution and perhaps NOT name a fictional world something that sounds very similar to an actual real thing in this way. because the thing is, i’m p sure it could be offensive/harmful, and i definitely don’t wanna contribute to harmful shit cuz that would suck, duh.
SO BASICALLY MY QUESTION IS!!!: IF YOU ARE MĀORI OR KNOW SOMEONE WHO IS, WHAT ARE YOUR/THEIR THOUGHTS ON THIS? (ur not obligated to reply ofc but if ur willing to spare the time i would appreciate it!)
(would also appreciate this being spread a bit so more ppl get the chance to answer/spread !! thank !!!!)

Hey guys~ As usual, I am late. Wednesday was yesterday for me. This also happens to be my first T5W post of the year. :D As you all know, Top 5 Wednesday is a discussion group on Goodreads, started by Lainey and now moderated by Sam.
This week’s topic is Favourite Non-Written Novels. Basically, it means any top 5 fav manga, comics, graphic novels…etc. any others books except for the normal novel, you can list it down.
Mine will definitely be filled with manga, haha. I mostly read shoujo manga (romantic, sweet, fluffy manga that is sure to make a girl’s heart go doki doki), and yaoi manga (LGBT manga, well, yaoi specifically focused on gay love). But sometimes I do like to read action/ fantasy manga.
So, on to the list…
1. Kingyo Sou by Fujitsuka Yuki
Summary:
During springtime in their second year of high school, Asuka fell in love with Masami after seeing him play the Harmony Drums during the festival. However, Masami is deaf, and in his own soundless world, he has closed his heart. With this, their miraculous but painful love quietly begins. A pure midsummer love story that will warm your heart. Fujitsuka Yuki’s long awaited debut comic!
I think this is probably my favourite manga of all time. It has 8 chapters with one short bonus story, split into two books.
I love Asuka and Masami’s love story, the way that Asuka is not scared off when she found out that Masami is deaf and continued to pursue him romantically, and how Masami is slowly falling in love with Asuka.
At this point, I think I’ve read this manga more than 10 times.
2. Ichihara Yukino
Summary:
Teased unmercifully for his past as an orphan and a slave, Teito has only his best friend Mikage to ease his days at the elite Barsburg Academy – and his mastery of the magical art of Zaiphon! But even that will not be enough to save him when he discovers a horrifying secret behind the ruling Empire. Trapped in an ancient battle between a wicked Death God and the Seven Ghosts and guided by three mysterious priests, Teito discovers a power that could save the world… and shed light on his own mysterious past.
This is definitely one of my favourite action/ fantasy manga. It has 100 chapters, split into 17 books. There are sweet parts that makes you go awe, sad parts that make you cry and funny parts that make you laugh so hard. There’s even epic bromance scenes (which is probably one of the main reasons why I love this manga so much). Imagine if I still collect manga novels. I would have spent roughly RM 663 for this series alone.
3. Beauty Pop by Arai Kiyoko
Summary:
Although a truly gifted hairstylist, Kiri Koshiba has no interest in using her talent to pursue fame and fortune, unlike the three popular boys in the “Scissors Project” at school. Determined to become the best makeover team in Japan, they give showy makeovers to handpicked girls. As much as Kiri tries to shy away from the Scissors Project spotlight, she finds herself responding to beauty’s call…
When I first started reading this shoujo manga, it immediately reminded me of Prince of Tennis (God! I love that manga so much), but instead of about sports, it’s about hairstyling and stuff. I didn’t know I would end up loving this manga a lot. I’ve read this manga like more than 10 times too, and my gosh, I always end up not sleeping when I started reading because I just want to get to the next chapter and the next. Haha This manga has 51 chapters + 3 bonus stories, split into 10 books.
4. Sex Pistols / Love Pistols by Kotobuki Tarako
Summary:
People are starting to act very odd around Norio. This average, normal boy is suddenly getting a lot of unwanted romantic attention and he can’t figure out why! A broken leg and a fall down the stairs into the arms of a handsome stranger set off the beginnings of an explanation, and it is one Norio never could have possibly imagined. Soon a whole new world opens up for Norio, revealing a secret society of special people evolved from animals other than monkeys. This society has a complex structure and its members are ranked by rarity and desirability, and it turns out that Norio is a particularly rare breed and his DNA is in much demand! How will he survive in this modern jungle where he’s suddenly the prey?
I first read this manga when I was 16. You see, I love fanfictions, I love SLASH PAIRING, and I absolutely love mpreg. So, I decided to look if there’s any mpreg manga, and what do you know? There is one, and it is called… SEX PISTOLS. Or Love Pistols, it depends.
At first, I was only lured by the promise of mpreg, but I didn’t expect myself to fall in love with the manga. The characters, the stories…all of them. Damn. I find myself laughing, squealing, ranting in frustration and crying while reading this. As of now, the manga has 49 chapters, split into 8 books, and is still ongoing.
5. Shinshi Doumei Cross (The Gentleman’s Alliance Cross) by Tanemura Arina
Summary:
In return for a business loan of 50 million yen, the prestigious Kamiya family gave their daughter Haine away to the Otomiya family. Haine, now an Otomiya, is appointed to the student council of the exclusive Imperial Academy, a private school for the aristocracy. Even though Haine is of proper lineage to be on the council, she finds herself struggling to find her place among the many secrets of its elite members, especially those of the president who holds her heart – Shizumasa Togu, aka “the Emperor.”
Haine has been in love with Shizumasa Togu from the day she read the picture book he wrote as a child. She enrolls the Imperial Academy to be close to him and is accepted as a member of the student council. But with that, dark secrets start to reveal themselves! Why does “The Emperor” act differently? Is Haine really in love with Shizumasa? Why did her father sell her and why doesn’t her mother write to her anymore?
I bought this manga because I love Arina’s arts, and damn, this story is so <3. Far-fetched, not realistic but still makes my shoujo heart go doki doki. Icing on top is that it has yaoi love. Maora (the person on the cover) is a guy and loves his childhood friend, also a guy. But then, I’m not sure if it could be considered gay love, because Maora ended up dressing up as a girl so that his childhood friend would accept him. Now that I think about it, I’m not sure if what Maora and Maguri have is yaoi, because I think Maora is genderfluid and dresses up as a girl most of the time.
Honorary mention:
These two manga are in my top 10 list, and also two of the classics.
1. The Prince of Tennis by Konomi Takeshi (1999). It has 379 chapters, split into 42 books. (Imagine collecting this series O.O)
2. Gokusen by Morimoto Kozueko (1999). I think this one has 50+ chapters, split into 15 books.
So, these are my favourite non-written novels. Do you love reading manga? Have you read any that I’ve mentioned? I’d love to know what your favourite non-written novels are. :)
Cheers,

I began as a child- I was a little girl with a little sister in some anime movie. (I think in my mind it was supposed to be ‘Your Name’ since I’ve never seen it and talked about it with a friend recently, but this was definitely not it.)
Another child in the neighborhood went to my school / in my grade, and although they spoke Japanese and I spoke English we still were friends. She’d bring over Japanese snacks and id give her American ones and we’d teach each other words from our language.
But then I grew up and the world was different. I’d been kidnapped by this corporation that was using children in its virtual war fighting, and for some reason they wanted me in particular. I was trapped in this tube which was slowly filling with water, as they tried to convince me to work for them.
However- my old childhood pal from before sprung me out by making some kind of diversion. Pal was different now- he was a boy now and had robotic limbs from the knees down. I hid behind the virtual war rigs while the company’s workers logged on to try to find me, and while they were in virtual I tried to get out.
However, company owner man caught me and my pal trying to pry the door of the escape open- turns out my pal was his kid, and for his betrayal he bent the guy’s legs in half right in front of me. (Which hurt bc he had feeling wired into them.) The man revealed he’d captured me because my estranged mother was apparently in a rival company to his and causing him huge problems in the virtual world, so he hoped I would be effective against her. I woke up in a cold sweat when the guy was trying to drag me back for more torture.
While I was definitely an Anime Person this whole time the premise reminded me more of parts of Ready Player One 0.o

hi there umm idk if you were perhaps artemis-maora on deviantart in like 2013 who posted a ghirahim/link comic back in the day or not, but if you are that person..
I got a deviantart account Just so I could see the next page of that comic one time. being on the site inspired me to start drawing. It’s started off as shitty anime legend of Zelda fanart, but I kept with it. Throughout the years I got better at it to the point where people told me I should go to art school. I have now submitted applications to graduate schools to become a professional medical illustrator.
but yeah I only started drawing when I was in middle school because of your(?) ship comic and now it’s my career! Thank you
I sure was (and am still technically) artimus-maora on DA!!
Wow, good old GhiraLink on DA.... so many years ago. I can't say enough how excited I am for you!!! Professional medical illustration- that's amazing! I'm so happy to have been the springboard for your art journey - a good friend of mine did the same for me, many years ago, so I completely understand how wild the journey can be. Never thought fandom art could lead to a career, huh?
Once again, I can't emphasize enough how excited I am for you! I'm so, so happy to have been a directing force in your art journey! Thank you for sharing this with me- wishing you all the best on your grad school apps!! You're gonna be great!

Pictures of my plague doctor costume last night ! I hobbled around the streets as the light faded. Heard a lot of adults comment about it being either creepy or funny, and a lotta kids gave me a wide berth.
