I was hoping to get both the Moon and Jupiter in the same shot; alas, they’re close but not that close. Looks like the telephoto vs normal camera situation is as I determined on Wednesday: the 3x is native but mushy, the 1x is small but reasonably clear. Unfortunately the exposure varied from “blown out white blob” to “barely visible charcoal rendering”, so I went with the best I had. The Moon’s pretty librated to the west right now, most of the far eastern maria — Humboldtianum, Smythii, Marginis and Australe — are visible at least as a sliver. For whatever reason, the Moon is mushy but Jupiter is crisp in the telephoto. Tonight’s lineup is Callisto-Europa/Io-Jupiter-Ganymede, with two of the crew basically atop one another. #iphoneastrophotography #lunarphotography #themoon #20xbinoculars #shallowskyastronomy #galileanmoons #jupiter #io #europa #ganymede #callisto #marehumboldtianum #maresmythii #maremarginis #mareaustrale #libration https://www.instagram.com/p/Ckj7fdGM9Ra/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

We celebrate July 20 as Moon Day, the anniversary of Apollo 11's Eagle lander touching down on the moon and the momentous first step taken thereby Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin. This picture of our big blue marble hanging above Mare Smythii was taken 51 years ago by 1 of the crew of that mission. #earthrise #moonday #blueplanet #maresmythii ##apollo11 #buzzaldrin #neilarmstrong #michaelcollins #eaglelander #lunarsurface #apollo16 #apollo12 #apollo16 #moonwalk #astronaut #theuniverse #earth #Realtyconnectusa #digitalblueprint #realtorjaishreezilpelwar #Realtorjanezilpelwar https://www.instagram.com/p/CC4d72eHH3a/?igshid=1bqbt4duwkiut

I've groused before about Venus' elusiveness, given the angle of the ecliptic in the fall, but I managed to catch it this evening... from my kitchen window. Enjoy an action shot of the setup! Again, the iPhone camera just don't like that bright scintillating point of light, so you can kinda just barely see that it's a little less than half phase, starting to crescent out. I'm hoping that when it becomes a big brilliant crescent later in the year, it'll become obvious even in these pics. Tonight it's Callisto - Jupiter - Io - Ganymede - Europa, although with a twist: Io and Ganymede are right on top of one another, as that bright dot just right of Jupiter, and that last right-side dot is 45 Capricornus, an actual star. And finally, a bright and a detail waxing gibbous Moon for you. Close to full, and the eastern limb maria are once again librated into good view. #iphoneastrophotography #lunarphotography #waxinggibbous #maresmythii #marehumboldtianum #maremarginis #mareaustrale #galileanmoons #jupiter #io #europa #ganymede #callisto #venus https://www.instagram.com/p/CWXD3swrGwS/?utm_medium=tumblr

Clear night the day after #ObserveTheMoon Night, Murphy's Law in full effect. Almost full gibbous, and all the eastern limb maria have librated into view: Humboldtianum, Smythii, Marginis and Australe. Hard to see in the iPhone photo, but they're there. It's getting a bit bright, so have an extra darker exposure for a little more contrast. Just imagine how bright moonlit nights would be if the Moon *wasn't* as dark as old asphalt. Callisto Ganymede Europa Jupiter Io for this evening's alignment, another pretty little solar system in the eyepiece. And Saturn, because it's there and I saw it. 🤣 #iphoneastrophotography #lunarphotography #marehumboldtianum #maresmythii #maremarginis #mareaustrale #galileanmoons #jupiter #io #europa #ganymede #callisto #saturn https://www.instagram.com/p/CVJomunl7QQ/?utm_medium=tumblr

Finally a night that wasn't cloudy or I wasn't fighting a head cold! Big and bright and round, since it's the nearest full Moon to the solstice it's also the lowest full Moon of the year. It's not technically completely full, you can see some terminator crater shadows on the edge. But whatevs, everything else is in flat full sun. Remember my earlier post about libration? Well, we've nodded the other way, now, and Oceanus Procellarum is tilted away from Earth and Mare Crisium toward. You can even catch the edge maria on the eastern limb: Spumans, Undarum, Humboldtiarum, Smythii, Marginis and Australe. On the other side, poor Grimaldi is almost over the western edge. Adding to the libration tilt, the Moon is also near the furthest south in its orbit, so we see quite a bit of the northern hemisphere; Mare Frigoris is more visible than usual. It also makes the Moon even lower on the horizon that just the solstice effect. #iphoneastrophotography #lunarphotography #fullmoon #technicallyverywaxinggibbous #libration #marefrigoris #marehumboldtianum #maresmythii #grimaldi #solsticemoon https://www.instagram.com/p/CQfGZdkFccS/?utm_medium=tumblr
